    reflections in human reality.

Spirit, consciousness and experience are shown to be the pillars

of mans cosmic position both in their capacity as trans-empirical

categories and in their capacity as active forces whose interaction

shapes the image of mans empirical existence. With the aid of these

constitutive categories, the author comes to grips with some of the

most pressing problems of our times; problems ranging from mans

relation to symbolic and institutional forms, history and technology

through mans inalienable right to life, liberty and dignity.

*21. Practice and Realization: Studies in Kants Moral Philosophy /

Nathan Rotenstreich. Te Hague: M. Nijhoff, 1979. 153 p. Te present book is an exploration of some basic issues of Kants

moral philosophy. Te point of departure is the concept of freedom

and the self-legislation of reason. Since self-legislation is expressed in

the sphere of practice or morality, it is meant to overcome some of the

vulnerable aspects of Kants theoretical philosophy, namely that which

Kant himself pointed to and called the lucky chance, in so far as the

application of reason to sensuous data is concerned.

Te book attempts to show that Kants practical or moral philosophy

faces questions which are parallel to those he faced in the sphere ofhis theoretical philosophy. Te problematic situation of realization

of practice is parallel to the problematic situation of application of

theory. It is in the line of the problems emerging from Kants practical

philosophy that the present book deals with some of Kants minor

writings, or less-known ones, including his writings in the sphere of

politics, history and education. Te limitations of self-legislation this

is the theme of the book.

    D. Reidel, 1987. ix, 220 p. (Boston Studies in the Philosophy of

    Science, vol. 101).

Te present book approaches the domain and the phenomenonof history by attempting to analyze history as a structure [...]

Tis is an attempt at investigating the various components of thehistorical sphere, starting with the primary synthesis between time

as background and a comprehensive meaning and fragmentary or

thematic meanings imported and introduced into the substructure

of time. Tese meanings are in turn related to actions, deeds, events,

continuous interpretations, reinterpretations, etc. Hence the historical

domain can be conceived of as an ongoing attempt to bestow partial

meanings and thus specific contents on the presupposed background

of time. Te involvement of human beings in history, including their

reflection on it, is on the one hand an aspect of the process but is onthe other hand grounded in reflection, positing or creating the vantage

point for observation. For understanding history from within, there is

neither a first historical deed nor an ultimate historical end. Reflection

is continuously involved in the historical process, and there is no first

stage to it either. Te momentum of reflection is of its own origin, in

spite of its involvement in the process. Te distinction and interaction

between awareness and process is again an essential aspect of history as

a realm. From the authors introduction.

refers to immediate contact between human beings, as Buber saw it, or

whether that relation is something established or aspired to. Tis is an

important study which should be consulted in any future discussion

of Martin Bubers thought. At the same time, it raises critical issues for

    Nathan Rotenstreich. Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt: Frommann-

    Untersuchungen, Bd. 34).

Te relation between Hegel's system and that of Kant can be describedas one of a dialectical character. Hegel continues to explicate some of

the basic concepts of Kants systems, mainly the concept of reason,

but he does this by way of Aufhebung. Te concepts are present but,

because of the trend from duality to integration, they undergo basic

changes in their meaning and direction. Te relation between reason

and ethics is, from this angle, the axis of this book. It is related to the

previous one, On Legislation and Exposition, which appeared as Beiheft

to Hegel Studien, but it is a wholly independent study. Tose parts of

the book which were published before have been re-written. Fromauthors note.

the philosophies of Kant and Hegel. It attempts to make the best case

Te two terms used most frequently in the present study are attitude

and phenomenon, both of which refer to faith. Te two terms are

not identical or synonymous: faith as an attitude describes a posture

or a position, whereas faith as a phenomenon denotes cognition as

occurrence, though not through the senses, in the original connotation

of the term. Faith as a phenomenon in this sense may be a point of

departure for an attempt to analyze its essence. Tis meaning of the

concept leads to a phenomenological investigation in the broad sense of

the term, pointing to Wesensschau for the act of intuiting essences and

essential relations and correspondingly to some structural components

of essence. Dealing with the phenomenon of faith, one is bound to take

into consideration its essence and historical manifestations, whereas

the question whether religion is the essence of faith or its necessary

manifestation is an open question. From the authors preface.

*35. Synthesis and Intentional Objectivity: on Kant and Husserl /Nathan Rotenstreich. DordrechtBostonLondon: Kluwer

    Academic Publishers, 1998. viii, 135 p.

Te analysis presented here is concerned with some major works by

Kant and Husserl. Te theme of the analysis is the variations on the

position and essence of intuition Anschauung. Tis theme has central

significance in Kants system because of his conception of the structure

of knowledge as a synthesis of intuition and reason or understanding. It

has central importance in Husserls system because of the discernmentof data through the medium of intuition. Te topic calls attention to

the similarities and differences between the two systems. We must make

a point about terminology: Sinnlichkeit is translated both as sensuality

and as sensibility. Both these terms are employed in this book because

both are presented in the literature in English. Te frequent reference

to the term Anschauung is caused by the fact that the term intuition

has two meanings: immediate non-discursive knowledge and seeing.

Te term Anschauung refers primarily to seeing. Tis nominal aspect is

significant for the interpretation of the two systems. From the authorspreface.

Te author traces the dialectical connections between Zionisms past

and present based on his contention that the Jewish nation comprises

both the State of Israel and the Diaspora. He also addresses relations

between both Israel and the Diaspora, on the one hand, and Israel and

the Arab world, on the other. Written a short time before Rotenstreichs

death,Zionismcan be regarded as his spiritual and ideological legacy.
