State shields school sex victims – Natal Mercury 20/07

THE prosecutor in the matter of a 22-year-old man accused of sexually abusing Parktown Boys’ High pupils has asked that their dignity and privacy be preserved.

During the hearing of the matter in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Colleen Ryan requested that the 65-page indictment of charges against the former water polo coach not be included in the court documents, citing the protection of the privacy and dignity of the young victims.

“In the interest of the victims, the State requests that the indictment not be included in the court documents,” Ryan said.

The accused’s lawyer did not object to the request by the State. The matter is scheduled to go on trial on September 8 in the high court in Johannesburg.

The suspect, who cannot be named, faces 160 charges that include sexual assault, assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm, sexual grooming, exposure of a child to pornography, and child neglect. He is out on R3 000 bail.

At the time, the crimes were allegedly committed, the man worked as an assistant house master at the school. Allegations are that he was arrested after video footage surfaced of him fondling a 15-year-old male pupil.

The video allegedly surfaced in November when the house master was viewing video footage while investigating a case of stolen goods.
