CARDIOVASCULAR PREVENTION

Konstantinos Letsas, MD

The cardiovascular prevention consists of a coordinated set of actions aimed at eradicating, eliminating or minimizing the impact of cardiovascular

diseases and their related disability. Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of premature death worldwide. Forty per cent of deaths that occur in subjects less than 75 years old in Europe are related to cardiovascular diseases. Changes in risk factors are leading to 50% reduction of cardiovascular mortality.

Page 17: Neu Tymes Vol.45

CARDIOVASCULAR PREVENTION

Konstantinos Letsas, MDRisk factors include:1.Lifestyle risk factors that can be prevented or changed: • Smoking.• Lack of physical activity.• Obesity.• An unhealthy diet.• Excess alcohol.2.Treatable or partly treatable risk factors: • High blood pressure (hypertension).• High cholesterol blood level.• High fat (triglyceride) blood level.• Diabetes.• Kidney diseases.3.Fixed risk factors - ones that you cannot alter: • A strong family history (cardiovascular disease at a young age). • Being male.• An early menopause in women.• Increased age. • Ethnic group. For example, people who live in the UK with ancestry from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, or Sri Lanka have an increased risk.

Page 18: Neu Tymes Vol.45
Page 19: Neu Tymes Vol.45

1.A healthy diet is recommended for cardiovascular prevention: Saturated fatty acids to account for <10% of total energy intake, through replacement by polyunsaturated fatty acids.Trans unsaturated fatty acids: as little as possible, preferably no intake from processed food, and <1% of total energy intake.<5g of salt per day.30-45 g of fibre per day, from wholegrain products, fruits and vegetables.200 g of fruit per day (2-3 servings).200 g of vegetables per day (2-3 servings).Fish at least twice a week, one of which to be oily fish.Consumption of alcoholic beverages should be limited to 2 glasses per day (20 g/d of alcohol) for men and 1 glass per day (10 g/d of alcohol) for women. 2.Weight reduction in overweight and

obese people is recommended as this is associated with favourable effects on blood pressure and dyslipidaemia, which

may lead to less cardiovascular disease.3.Smoking cessation.4.Healthy adults of all ages have to

spend 2.5-5 Hours a week on physical activity of at least moderate intensity, or 1-2.5 hours a week on vigorous intense exercise. Sedentary subjects should be strongly encouraged to start light-intensity exercise programmes.5.Systolic blood pressure should be lowered to <140 mmHg (and diastolic Blood pressure <90 mmHg) in all hypertensive patients.6.Normal glucose metabolism. The

target HbA1c for the prevention of cardiovascular disease in diabetes of <7.0% is recommended.7.In patients at very high cardiovascular

risk, the recommended LDL cholesterol target is < 70 mg/dL.8.Avoidance of excessive stress.

Based on the European Guidelines on cardiovascular disease prevention in clinical practice, the following measures should be taken:

SciFY: Science For You

Page 25: Neu Tymes Vol.45

SciFY: Science For YouSciFY is a not-for-profit organization, that develops cutting-edge information technology systems and freely offers them to all, including the design, the implementation details, and the support needed, in order to solve real-life problems. Our "target group" is the world. We offer to all, and we are dependent on everybody's help.

Page 26: Neu Tymes Vol.45

The StoryBillions are spent for research each year, giving birth to amazing

new knowledge, that usually stays confined within the walls of institutions. Results that can lead to revolutionary solutions of everyday problems are not exploited:Scientists do not have the know-how, mindset and resources to turn this knowledge into products. The companies that are funded are usually more interested in getting cash for the research, or in patenting technologies, than in using this new knowledge for the benefit of all. This vast potential remains severely untapped and society does not benefit from it! SciFY bridges this gap, drawing from this pool of knowledge and building multidisciplinary teams to create products

that solve actual problems: from helping people with disabilities, to reinforcing pluralism in news coverage. But we do not stop there: We freely share the knowledge, beyond speculative motives and patents. We offer our products, including all design and implementation details, to all and actively support the reuse and evolution of the offered technologies into new products. So that people and the economy benefit from freeing innovation, and everyone gets equal opportunities to build solutions on the shoulders of scientific achievements. We believe in a world where scientific results are made free and are allowed to affect and improve everyday life. Ready for Use:

Page 29: Neu Tymes Vol.45

Ready for Use:You have visited Amazon/eBay viewing a book that interests you. Automatically, you get suggestions regarding similar books or books written by the same writer. You are reading the news or searching for an exotic destination and you get suggestions for relevant news/ destinations. You create a profile in a social network and relevant interests/advertisements appear. You create your profile on an application in your mobile phone and you get information you really need. We have entered the era of personalization; internet sites and mobile apps need to offer a personal experience. The problemWhat happens in the case that we wish to provide the visitors of our site or the users of our mobile application with such a personalized experience? Well, then we have to spend lots of money to companies offering such software and services. But the question is: how can a small new company compete with corporate giants without offering the so called personalization services? How can a NGO raise money to act respectively? With what ways will a public service be able to offer such a service to the citizens given the limited financial resources?

Solution that is offered for free, using open source codePServer is an open source application developed by NCSR "Demokritos", which offers the possibility of personalization of other applications. Consequently, the creator of a web site for instance, will now have the chance to offer its users personalized services at zero cost! The only prerequisite is the existence of a server and some extra work. The potential of this application cannot be described in only a few lines. We are proud that in collaboration with "Demokritos", we have already achieved to finalize the app, and to offer free distribution and support (documentation, training, technical support...).

A joint effort with a vision:Help all organizations, regardless of their size and cost restraints they face, have a better understanding of people's needs, easily develop services related to these needs and continually improve them, boosting economy and employment, and better serving their clients and citizens.

Page 30: Neu Tymes Vol.45

The problemHow can you get the whole picture in your areas of interest, fast? Up to now, in order to be well-informed about what you really want to, you were obliged to visit at least 2-3 different sites/blogs and spend valuable time reading news that are by 80% the same... Newsfeeds, news aggregators are not real solutions: They just group articles, but you still have to do the rest of the job, since you have to visit all the different sources in order to get the information you need (when / if you have the time!).

The breakthrough: Pluralism at a glanceSciFY brought to our smartphones (and not only there) a really innovative application that automatically summarizes information from many sources and combines them in a single text! It is a intelligent "collage" of all the different information that you would get if you read all the articles from all the sources you visit (or that you would like to have time to visit...) With the use of cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology, news are summarised and all repeated information is not duplicated. All these in a user friendly, tested and effective application. eDeskIn every desk, a window open to the whole world

The problemWhen in a school the students have access to a computer linked to Internet, and the appropriate software, the horizon opened in front of their eyes is immense: they can discover, learn, interact, receive

information... acquire knowledge and live experiences, through a unique way!The problem is that not all schools have the possibility to offer their students such tools: most of the times cost sets a limit, especially in countries, regions or

Page 32: Neu Tymes Vol.45

schools that face financial problems. Thus, students are separated in two categories; the "privileged" and the "non-privileged"...

Solution, freely offered with the construction designs and open source softwareeDesk is actually a common desk with two integrated ultra-low-budget computers, made to be used in the classroom (and not only there).

The cost of the computers is so low, that it allows:1. Students to have limitless access to knowledge and new technologies, as well as to develop skills useful for their future.2. States/organizations with limited resources to be able to offer an education of high standardsWith are thrilled to work on this project, doing our best to incorporate all the necessary characteristics that will make eDesk a useful, user-friendly, amusing tool that will enrich the learning process and return the light of creativity back to school life.

ICSeeFacilitate access for our fellowmen with serious visual impairmentsThe problemReading a menu, a sign or finding the right bell to ring, are for most of us simple, everyday actions. For the persons with serious visual impairments, all the above are major issues that may put them in awkward or even very difficult situations.

Why can't there be a simple tool that could really help them?

Solution offered freely with open source codeWe are already working on the development of an innovative application called ICSee. This

ThinkFreedomOvercoming accessibility problems using cutting-edge technologyOur world is not always friendly to people with mobility, vision, hearing or other accessibility problems. At SciFY we thought that there should be a unified way to communicate with a computer and other home appliances, irrespectively of one's motion or sense abilities.

This project aims to create a set of tools that will allow to each and every one of us to use his/her computer based on his/her special abilities or particularities. It will be able to support computer use using a camera, microphone, 3D camera, or just with the power of thought (and we are not kidding...).

application will be compatible with small portable devices (mobile phones, tablets) and will make the reading of text and details on objects easier, though a simple, convenient and always available way!How is that possible? The user simply directs the camera of his/her smartphone or tablet to the point he/she wants and... that was it! The application processes the image on the screen according to the user's needs (zoom in, conversion to negative or greyscale, increase the contrast, etc.) and provides in real time an image that is is easier for the user to see!

The group of art and culture SYNEIRMOS '' '' highlights new representational proposals where expressive movement , visual art landscapes with references to surrealism , poetry and music create a compact and indivisible whole .

The group was created when Chris met Penny. An artist and a guide dancer. Artistic chemistry walked in their internal searches , and right there they built the video performance''ARE YOU SOMEWHERE?''

A show that talks about the search for the lost inner self. A story full of memories , anguish , determination and emotion, the scene where environment comes alive and constantly mutates (using video projector- technical projection mapping) and the heroine '' talks '' with shadows of using the body language. The main character is a woman who tells her story ... and she's the same viewer . Atmospheres , feelings and experiences, are the meanings on this trip where unsuspected becomes so personal .

The show ''Are you somewhere?'' has already been presented in Athens , Nafplio and Eleusis (participation in the art exhibition ''Light'')

Τhe Arab Guggenheim Museum, is the predominant name by which the Hollow Airport Museum has been widely known, emphasizing on the sociopolitical connections of Cyprus, where the Museum is located, with the Middle East and the nearby Arab countries. HAM, which plays the role of a cultural meeting point of the area, emblematically houses its activities at the abandoned International Airport, in the contested zone - the Green Line - that divides the island in two, as a result of a violent and catastrophic war in 1974, between Greek-Cypriot and Turkish military forces.Airports, airplanes and the cross Atlantic journeys, have been the symbol of progress and evolution from the end of nineteenth until the first half of the twentieth century; but it was only in Kennedy’s glorious era that the apotheosis of the sky conquest would have reached its peak, stigmatizing every aspect of everyday reality, literature and art, architecture and fashion. Everything real progressive and advanced should had been connected with the space achievements and the human desire

to explore the planetary system.Having Kennedy’s bunker as starting point of reference, the participating artists are called to present different approaches and positions with regard to the motif and functions of a contemporary civil refuge. The artists may draw inspiration from a wide array of archetypical sources, extending from the claustrophobic Platonic cave to the argophilia of the One-Way Mars Colony Project.Nowadays, on the verge of a new cold war and while the sight of our planet from Mars may seem to be a routine, what is tomorrow‘s perspective? Just what is that makes space getting so critical, so politicized?

The Kennedy Bunker

Jackie’s poisonous perfume Text by Dr.Aspasia Mastrogianni

...During August 1974, while Cypriots were hasting at improvised bunkers to find protection from the bombardments of the Turkish aircrafts, the White House made the existence of the Kennedy's

Page 47: Neu Tymes Vol.45
Page 48: Neu Tymes Vol.45

bunker publicly known for the very first time. Until then, it had remained a well kept secret of the American government. President Kennedy considered the construction of a bunker a priority of great importance in an era that the nuclear war was a constant threat. Having Kennedy’s bunker as starting point of reference, the participating artists are called to present different approaches and positions with regard to the motif and functions of a contemporary refuge in a period that a new cold war seems to be yet again our future’s perspective... Nicos Charalambidis, the leading political artist of the Greek new generation, steadily uncovers different chapters of history concerning the war in Cyprus and the wall, which has imposed the

division of his country in 1974, while the artist’s family forced to flee their home. Charalambidis manages to excite us, instead of making us feel bored, even as he narrates with obsession the same story since the late 80’s. The traumatic experience of division led him several times to Berlin and he was one of the many young people who, by their own hands, contributed to the deconstruction of the wall. If he didn’t proclaim his nationality by himself with so much passion, one could say that it is all about a German artist, due to the many references to the city of Berlin: The monument of Rosa Luxembourg, the unification of the divided city, the checkpoints and the Wall, the Spartakiades, the Olympic games of 36, Hitler, Bauhaus, the German Pavilion for the

1929 International Exposition in Barcelona, Mies van der Rohe, Jospeph Beuys and Kurt Schwitters’ oeuvre, seem to be focal points of Charalambidis’ artistic research. Thus, was not a surprise for me to hear that even the banners of the present show and the way he set them up in the gallery, was corresponding to specific Schwitters’ Merz, highlighting by this way the political character of the exhibition and the non random dates of its fruition, as it took place during the period of the European elections. The numerous references to Berlin and the personalities of the German history and art, are connected symbolically with Charalambidis’ field of action, which is nothing else than his very own house. Interwoven with notions such as motherland,

Page 49: Neu Tymes Vol.45

inhabitance, personal and collective memory, his house plays the role of an allegory, functioning more as a den, a cave or a shelter than a real residency. His house, a flat in the centre of Athens, undergoes a continuous ‘’therapeutic’’ situation of shifting, repairing and rebuilding since the walls, floors, doors, glass partitions, ceilings, dormers and furniture are being transferred in the exhibition spaces, ceremonially grounding his sculpture installations. In the Berlin bunker (Reh-transformer gallery), as well as in other participatory platforms of the artist, the installation has been set up following again the element of Familiarity, with works of his friends and colleagues who go along this specific course of action. Decisively catalyzing the limits between

personal and group exhibition, the compact result of the show manages to act as an engine of unified dynamics, highlighting the personal element of the participating artists, which not only it does not get flattened but on the contrary, it's touched off, through the nimbly orchestrated dialogue provoked from the creatively juxtaposing of the works. The tour through the theatrical curtains of this refuge becomes fascinating as it holds many surprises, hidden artworks and happenings, narrations and video projections, which haunt as Platonic shadows the walls of this wooden cave. By the time you enter the space, you feel the need to let yourself go without directions in the paths that unfold before your eyes. Then again, you decide to

follow Ariadne’s thread. The reflection of the labyrinth is clearly given by Moataz Nazr’s work, while the starry map of Eva Mitala with the scented Lego by Ryusuke Kido give the stigma of the tour. In the dynamic performance by Orlando Britto Jinorio, the labyrinth’s rooms are hammered under the sound combination of flamenco and rembetiko coming from the opposite video by Lia Lapithi. In Panos Charalambous’ smoking room, where the ghosts of Duchamp and Che are dominating the space, the essential command of our days for collaboration gets heightened. ‘’Che Guevara instead’’ is the title that Charalambidis gives to Bob Wilson’s work, a gigantic self portrait-oil painting on red fabric, where the heroic face of Che is

Page 54: Neu Tymes Vol.45

replaced with the cosmopolitan portrait of this revolutionary artist. In his fascinating flag, the international artist Fatmi Mounir, records the threatening confrontation of West and Arab world, while the denunciatory work of the outstanding German artist Olaf Nicolai generates archives of multinational companies, which deviously manipulate and control the economy and politics of several countries. The ‘’war gold stampings’’ by Dionisis Christofilogiannis and the drawings of shelters by Pantelis Chandris reveal two artists of excellent skills who give an intellectual dimension to the meaning of handmade. Yukihiro Tagushi’s strong installation provokes a certain feeling of thrill; Tagushi has created a shelter in the outdoor space of Reh-transformer, while in his film in the exhibition space, presents the peculiar way he has followed to build his very own house in Berlin. The same sense of migration reflects also Evaggelos

Page 55: Neu Tymes Vol.45

Page 57: Neu Tymes Vol.45
Page 58: Neu Tymes Vol.45

Kaimakis’ wooden valise, which was not presented! The artist preferred to present a paper bag with only the printing-the idea of the original valise on its surfaces, referring directly Plato’s rhetoric and context. The shifting maps of moving sand by Yioula Chatzigeorgiou and the installation by Costas Sahpazis that the passing by viewers should transform every ten minutes, underline that the exhibition is based on the idea of volatility, thus visitors, depending on the day and time they visit the show, could come across a different exhibition-view, depending the scheduled performances, events and happenings by artists such as: Thierry Geoffroy Colonel, Dorian Batycka ,Celeste Pimm and others. In parallel, a rich program of screenings

and lectures accompanies the show, along with a series of workshops by Andreas Lyberatos, Chantzis Christos, Nicos Larios, Ifigeneia Mavridou, Ioannis Nestoros and Voula Karampatzaki. Leaving Charalambidis’ amazing cave, the clicking sound of the protesting military beds in Efi Spyrou’s video was echoing in my ears, bringing to my mind the slaves in the platonic cave. One of the cave’s captives escaping temporarily from the shadows’ illusions, he came out in the daylight and he saw the real world. When he hastily returned to his friends, the narration of this reality didn’t persuade anyone. Only the shadows ‘world was the true life for them. Because the real truth derives from thinking and knowledge, according Plato, and not from what we just see: Think,

Joseph Beuys keep saying, what you have in front of you is not what you see. The obvious thing in Charalambidis’ work -the first thing the viewer sees- is the sociopolitical dimension of his deeply influential oeuvre. What distinguishes him though, from other followers of the so called ‘’political art’’ are many things; I would like to concentrate on his Greek based philosophical position which seals his works and actions. Referencing the ‘’Exercises on Democracy’’, the theoretical framework of his "White House biennial", Charalambidis wonders: What necessity led Plato to write his Ideal State in the period of prosperity of the Athenian Democracy? Obviously, like in our times, the decline, abuse and degeneration in which many elected democratic

Page 59: Neu Tymes Vol.45

administrators of authority had been led, failing the democratic principles. Greek philosophers, mathematics and architecture, the Dionisian rituals, the Ancient Greek Museum, the Peripatetic School and the Lyceum set the components of Charalambidis’ deeply sophisticated and stohastic ouevre; even though he likes also to play, winking his eye at the visitors: A perfume’s bottle, which reflects the architecture of the Reh-transformer gallery, is revealed to us just before the exit, posing a subversive question. Is the whole event nothing else but a marketing bluff? Is it all about a perfume’s advertisement campaign? The Kennedy Bunker is only the sardonic name of this perfume? Well, in that case, I’m quite convinced that it is about a

special perfume, a catalytic aromatic formula, which poisons the stereotypes and the demureness of "political artists", a poisonous perfume-toxic to any kind of formalism in art and aesthetics. A drastic formula, which demonstrates that hilarity, has always been the essential weapon of an artist.
