Tajimi is in the Tono region of Gifu Prefecture. The Tono area is historically famous for being the biggest production area of the pottery known as Minoyaki or MINO ware, with over 1300 years of history. Even now, there are many pottery workshops where traditional skills are being passed down. Pottery with distinctive features are being developed in dierent areas, such as sake cups from Ichinokura, sake bottles from Takata, western style tableware from Takiro, and mosaic tiles from Kasahara.

At this facility, you can work with the clay and glaze used by Kobeigama, which opened 200 years ago, to try making pottery by hand or with a potter’s wheel. You can also decorate your pottery, do mosaic tile art, and more.

Ceramics classes are given here by ceramics artisan Masahiro Wakao. Choose from over 20 types of glaze, like Oribe and Shino, and create candy bowls, vases, cups for green tea, and more while enjoying the hillside view.

The Azuchi-Momoyama Ceramics Center is surrounded by an abundance of nature. Along with general courses and courses for visitors, there are introductory courses for those who want to begin working with ceramics in earnest. Tickets for open schedule courses are also available.

Ceramics by contemporary artists are on display here. Come and try your hand at making bowls, mugs, and other ceramics. After decorating them with pictures, have them fired, and pick them up at a later date.

On display at this museum are teacups made by children from the Taisho period to the Showa period. Courses are available to decorate pottery with children, and you can take your work home the same day. Tableware made by Taro Gomi are on sale at the museum gift shop.

On display are around 1,500 sake cups created between the end of the Tokugawa shogunate and the Showa period. Ceramic, glass, and wood artwork created by over 80 artists are on sale in the museum shop.

When the tea ceremony gained popularity in the Momoyama period, the favorite pottery of tea master Furuta Oribe, himself a student of the famous Sen-no-Rikyu, was Oribe. Oribe, Setoguro, Kizeto, and Shino are some of the variations of Mino-Momoyama ceramics developed at this time in Mino, all of which are famed for their skillful creation.

Chestnut and butter filled dorayaki (Bean-Jam pancake)

Each carefully grilled soft and fluy wrap is filled and folded around a perfect balance of butter and chestnut infused sweet red-bean paste. Ranked 6th in the national 'Delicious dorayaki ranking', these are one of Tajimi's leading delicacies.

This new local cuisine came from an event celebrating the 70th anniversary of the city's founding. It is defined as yakisoba made with spicy miso and served with a soft boiled egg. Taste the dierent variations served with pride by the restaurants around Tajimi.

From traditional Minoyaki, to artwork by contemporary artists, and to everyday tableware, there are many dierent kinds of ceramics stores here. The selection and the prices are excellent as would be expected in the national center of production. You are sure to find something you like whether looking for gifts or for yourself.

A classic gift since the Meiji period, these crackers are made of non-glutinous rice. Once you start eating these crunchy, soy-sauce flavored delights, you won't be able to stop. They are sold all over Tajimi and come in 4 flavors: sesame, shrimp, ginger, and 7-spice citron.

This well-established brewery has operated since the end of the Edo period. Its representative brand 'Michisakari' is described as a 'very dry sake', but is crisp and refreshing with no aftertaste. It has won prizes in the London Sake Challenge for the last 4 years running.
