A total of 350,755 Chinese students were enrolled at U.S. institutions of higher education in the academic year, up 6.8 percent, retaining China’s top slot* for eight years in a row, it said during a press conference on November 14. Chinese students made up 32.5 percent of all interna- tional students in the United States. Of them, 142,851 were undergradu- ates, a 5.3 percent increase. Transcontinental project The Chinese section of a transcon- tinental* expressway project set to link western China with Europe has opened to traffic. A key part of the project, a 10- km section of road in the border city of Horgos in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which con- nects a quarantine* area with the Lianyungang-Horgos expressway, came into use on Saturday, marking the across-the-board opening of the expressway in China. The project, with a total length of 8,445 km, links Lianyungang City in East China’s Jiangsu Province to St. Petersburg in Russia. Suspect detained The person in charge of a Shanghai day care center where staff were caught on camera allegedly abusing toddlers has been detained, police said on November 15. The suspect, surnamed Zheng, was detained on November 13 after three staff members from the Ctrip center’s management were detained, accord- ing to Shanghai police. Economic corridor China has proposed building an economic corridor with Myanmar to further enhance bilateral pragmatic* cooperation, Chinese Foreign Minis- ter Wang Yi said on Sunday.
