1. Deer Year: antler casting date, antler size and blood analysis.

We have just passed February and the earliest deer have probably started to cast their antlers in your farm (if you are in the northern hemisphere, not in our friends of New Zealand who are in full summer). Surely those of you breeding deer have already noticed some facts about who casts antlers first, and have some guess as who will grow larger antlers. Let us show some interesting facts about antler casting. It is rather well known that larger animals cast antlers earlier. This allows them a longer period to grow the following antlers. But what does science say? Surprisingly, there is few if any detailed study on antler casting. We will review later what it is published now, but a group having one of the best experimental deer farms in the world, that of IREC-Univ. Castilla-La Mancha (Spain), are examining in their 22 year record of breeding deer asking themselves questions like: what antler characteristics influence antler casting (larger antlers cast later or earlier)? Is casting date linked to a fixed growth period so that antlers that start growing later cast also later, or it depends on quality of male and thus, large males, growing larger antlers, finish their growth earlier and cast at an earlier date? The results will be published on a series of papers soon, but we can anticipate that in speakers, casting date is related to antler quality (earlier casting for higher quality antlers), and this in turn is related to body parameters.

But, although no such study had been published so far, there is published evidence regarding antler casting date, dominance, and other factors. In a study in 1980, one of the best groups in deer research in Prague, headed by Ludek Bartos, found that casting date in adult deer was mainly related to dominant status (more dominant deer cast antlers earlier), and that age had a secondary importance. Should we assess dominance in farms to predict antler casting date, and from this, antler size? This does not appear to be necessary. In another of the most active groups, that of the IDUBA president in Spain, the results showed that the best predictor of antler length was height at shoulder, and increase of weight in percentage. However, they did not measure dominance in this study. As for antler score (which is a mixture of antler length and weight) it was also very important the body condition at the start of antler growth. This study showed that antler casting took place, on an average, on 12th March. Immediately after casting, a new antler cycle began where antler growth lasted 158 days from casting to cleaning (for antlers with a final length of 81 cm). Another study of this group showed that there was a relationship between blood analysis (curiously performed in a standard hospital for humans), and antler length: The final size of antlers was inverse to several measures in blood (leukocyte count, non-lymphoid leukocyte count, red cell distribution width, and others). For the moment, much more easy to concentrate on height and body measures to predict antler size, but soon you will be able to use criterions from a very interesting series of papers which are on the way.

2.IDUBA SPECIAL REPORT III: Genetic improvement for trophy: advantages and disadvantages of reproductive techniques for genetic improvement.

The CIC made a guideline on what it is acceptable for natural hunting which specifically rejected the use of reproductive manipulation techniques in improving trophies. Probably this derives from the fact that it is so effective in helping in genetic improvement, that such improvement has been taking to the point in which trophies do not look very natural. As we discussed earlier, part

of this comes from the fact that sometimes breeders mix trophy lines (British x central European, for example), producing deer that, in mainland Europe, look very different to the evaluative deer line that live in natural areas of that country.

Let’s first explain what is reproductive manipulation. This is a set of techniques exerted on the male or female to boost reproductive efficiency of best males and females. It also involves the manipulation of reproduction timing, and with some of the latest techniques, even sperm composition to select for spermatozoa that produces male offspring. It involves synchronization of females, artificial insemination, and embryo transfer among others. We will explain them below after setting first their advantages and their constraints. 3. Surprising facts: a deer asking for chocolate like a kid

Probably error number one of people with no experience in breeding deer is thinking that they can be like dogs, very tame, all the time. Many breeders have anecdotes about deer that they bottle fed, or took care like a dog. In our farm in the IREC-UCLM, we had one deer that was bottle fed and left with sheep to avoid being attacked by hinds trying to protect their own calves. The outcome was a dog-like deer that was following both men and sheep whenever he saw, as an adult, them passing through the corridor outside his fence. But the error is to think that such deer will be tame all the time, because in the rutting period, they become aggressive even against his dearest owners. Some breeders who thought their bottle-fed male deer would never attack them were surprised, if not injured, when rut came.

Nevertheless, sometimes news appear in the press bringing us again the idea that deer can behave as a dog or pet. We have two, one coming from Daily mail, UK newspaper. In this, a deer apparently in Scotland and probably with not much food in the field, came to sniff and eat chocolate from the driver inside a car. A special character of red deer? American counterparts do not seem to be less daring or intelligent. In the second photograph, from Canada, a moose does the same, but he also smiled to camera!

4. Next meetings: FEDFA, VVS Vermerovice, Altai and International Antler Competition. Don’t forget the FEDFA spring meeting will be held at the end of March (31st to 1st of April).

Normally, this is only open to delegates, but in the last years, some companies and deer breeders have been allowed to participate. As in previous editions, the meeting is organized by past president of FEDFA, now secretary, Dr. Radim Kotrba. Apart from talks by VVS focused on nutrition, Pavel Scherer, one of the few people who has a roe deer farm and probably the best expert in the world in roe deer, will give a talk in antler improvement in this species. Dr. Radim Kotrba will also speak, as well as several Czech scientists speaking about influence on nutrition on carcass composition. Janey Hayes, from New Zealand, will speak about her experience to grow impressive antlers in white coloured red deer in NZ (have a last newsletter). We have received interest in attending from Russia (Deerland, Diana Hunting Club), Ukraine, most important deer farm from Spain (Lagunes), Hungary and others. It will be an interesting meeting.

Remember also that Russian Deer Breeders Association will organize a trip to Altai (Russia) in summer 2016 “200 years tradition of the Altai deer breeding". International Antler Competition in Latvia. Latvian Wild Animal Breeders Association, headed by his president Dr. Dainis Paeglitis, is organizing like every year, the International Antler Competition in Saulstari Deer Farm, Sigulda, Latvia. Due to the coincidence with VVS meeting in Czech Republic and others, it is possible that the conference that every year is organized simultaneously will be more focused on a practical training day. The event will take place on the 25th till 28th of July (last day for antler submission, 27th). On July 29th there will be the awards ceremony and socialization that so wonderfully Dainis organizes every year.

Возвращаясь к этой теме, обращаем Ваше внимание на то, что сейчас мы находимся в начале марта и первые олени, вероятно, уже стали сбрасывать свои рога на Вашей ферме (если Вы находитесь в северном полушарии, это не касается наших коллег из Новой Зеландии, у которых сейчас разгар лета).

Конечно, опытные заводчики оленей уже подметили некоторые факты и могут предположить, кто первым сбрасит рога, а также могут иметь догадки у какой особи вырастут самые впечатляющие трофеи. Разрешите нам также поделиться своими знаниями на этот счет. Хорошо известная истина такова, что более крупные животные сбрасывают рога раньше. Это позволяет им отращивать следующие рога более длительный срок. Что же говорит наука? Удивительно, но не так много каких-либо детальных исследований по этой теме. Мы рассмотрим какие материалы были опубликованы касательно сброса рогов позже. А сейчас вернемся к одной из исследовательских групп в Испании, имеющую одну из лучших экспериментальных оленеводческих ферм в мире, а именно IREC- Университет Кастилия-Ла-Манча. В течении 22 лет работы группы были изучены самые разнообразные вопросы и проблемы, включая и те, которые мы затрагиваем в этом Новостном письме: какие характеристики оленьих рогов влияют на их сброс (большие рога сбрасываются позже или раньше)? Связана ли дата сброса рогов с фиксированным периодом роста таким образом, что рога, которые начинают расти позже также сбрасываются позже, или это зависит от качества самца и, таким образом, крупные самцы выращивают большие рога, заканчивают их рост раньше и сбрасывают их на более раннем сроке? Результаты исследований будут опубликованы в самое ближайшее время, но мы можем уже предугадать, что дата сброса рогов связана с их качеством (ранний сброс для рогов высокого качества), а это, в свою очередь, связано с параметрами тела.

Но хотя ни одно из таких исследований не было опубликовано до сих пор, есть интересные свидетельства касательно даты сброса рогов, доминирования и других факторов. Так, в исследовании, проведенном в 1980 году, одной из лучших групп по изучению оленей в Праге во главе с Д-м Ludek Bartos, было обнаружено, что дата сброса рогов взрослого оленя в основном связана с доминирующим статусом (более доминирующие олени сбрасывают рога раньше), а возраст был вторичным фактором по важности. Должны ли мы тогда оценивать доминирование в хозяйствах для прогнозирования даты сброса рогов, и от этого пргнозировать размер рогов? Это не является необходимым условием. В другой исследовательской группе в Испании во главе с Д-м Tomas Landete результаты исследований показали, что лучшим предсказателем длины рогов является рост до плеча, а также увеличение веса в процентах. Тем не менее, доминирование в данном исследовании не

изучались. Что касается оценки трофеев (которая представляет собой совокупность факторов длины и веса рогов), также очень важным условием было состояние тела на начальном этапе роста рогов. Это исследование также показало, что сброс рогов имел место, в среднем, на дату 12 марта. Сразу после их сброса начинался новый цикл роста и длился 158 дней от сброса до очистки (для рогов с конечной длиной 81 см). Другое исследование этой группы показало, что существует связь между характеристиками крови (в результате выполненного ради любопытства анализа в стандартной больнице для людей) и длиной рогов: окончательный размер рогов был обратно пропорциональным к нескольким показателям в крови (количество лейкоцитов, нелимфоидное количество лейкоцитов, ширина распределения эритроцитов и другие). На данный момент гораздо легче сконцентрироваться на высоте и размере тела для предсказания размера рогов, но скоро Вы будете иметь возможность одними из первых использовать результаты исследований очень интересной серии работ, которые находятся на пути к завершению.

2. Специальный отчет IDUBA №3: Улучшение генетических свойств оленя для лучших трофеев: преимущества и недостатки репродуктивных техник.

Система оценки трофеев CIC отказывается в своих принципах от использования репродуктивных и других искусственных методов в целях роста более крупных трофеев. Вероятно, это происходит из-за того, что они являются настолько эффективным инструментом на пути внесения генетических корректировок, что такие улучшения доходят до той точки, что трофеи начинают выглядеть неестественными. Как мы уже говорили ранее, иногда это происходит по причине смешения заводчиками трофейных линий (например, Британской x Центрально-Европейской).

Давайте сначала разберемся, что такое репродуктивные манипуляции. Это набор методов, воздействующих на мужчин или женщин для повышения репродуктивной эффективности лучших самцов и самок. Репродуктивная манипуляция также включает в себя манипуляции воспроизводства в определенное время, некоторые последние технологии, включающие изучение состава спермы с последующим выбором сперматозоидов, которые произведут мужское потомство. Она включает в себя синхронизацию овуляции самок, искусственное оплодотворение, перенос эмбрионов и др. Мы расскажем о всех видах далее, определяя их преимущества и недостатки. 3. Удивительный факт: олени просят шоколад как дети.

Вероятно, ошибкой номер один для людей, не имеющих опыта в разведении оленей, является уверенность в том, что они, олени, могут быть как собаки, очень ручными и добрыми все время. Многие заводчики имеют массу анекдотов про оленей на этот счет, что они кормят их из бутылочки или опекают как собаку. На нашей ферме в IREC-UCLM был один олень, которого вскармливали из бутылочки и оставили с овцами, чтобы избежать нападения от оленухи, пытающейся защитить своего новорожденного теленка. Результатом всего этого была выращенная собака в оленьей шкуре, которая преследовала как мужчин, так и овец, увидев их проходящими через коридор вдоль своего забора. Но является ошибкой думать, что такие олени будут ручными все время, потому что, например, в период гона они становятся очень агрессивными, даже по отношению к своему владельцу. Некоторые заводчики, которые считали, что их вскормленные из бутылки олени -самцы никогда не нападают на них, были крайне удивлены, если не пострадали. Зачастую это имело место на период гона. Гон (период спаривания у животных) начинается в сентябре и идёт по ноябрь. В этот период самцы организуют гаремы из определённого количества самок, чьё количество может быть от двух до двадцати.

В другое время самцы живут отдельно. Рёв оленей можно слышать около месяца, он разносится очень далеко, за несколько километров. В период гона возможны драки между самцами, благодаря которым животные устанавливают первенство. Соперники сталкиваются рогами, пытаясь сбить с ног друг друга. Более слабые самцы быстро покидают поле боя. Узнать, сильный самец или слабый, можно не только по внешнему виду, но даже по голосу. У сильного и более опытного оленя голос хриплый и низкий, а у молодого и слабого — более высокий и чистый. Поединки крайне редко заканчиваются трагически, хотя бывали случаи, когда самцы ломали рога, или так переплетались ими, что не могли самостоятельно расцепиться и просто умирали от голода.

Тем не менее, иногда в прессе появляются новости, которые наводят нас снова на мысль, что олень может вести себя как собака или домашнее животное. Так, например, в одном из изданий Великобритании Daily Mail был опубликован забавный снимок. На нем изображен олень из Шотландии, который, вероятно, решил разнообразить скудный рацион полей кусочком шоколада от водителя авто. Могут ли олени позировать для фото и мило улыбаться? Конечно, могут. Взгляните на второе фото, и Вы в этом убедитесь сами. Смелости канадского коллеги можно только позавидовать.

Недавно он связался с нами и поведал, что в настоящий момент в парке обитает 7 европейских бурых медведей в возрасте от 2-х до 4-х лет, которые ищут новых хозяев. Некоторые из этих медведей (самцы) пришли из дикой природы, а некоторые были рождены в парке на 07.01.15 , их пол остается на сегодняшний день загадкой. Acabamos de pasar febrero y los primeros ciervos probablemente ya habrán empezado a desmogar sus cuernas, en su granja o coto (si está en el hemisferio norte, no para nuestros amigos de Nueva Zelanda que están en pleno verano). Probablemente algunos de ustedes hayan notado algunos hechos respecto de quién desmoga antes sus cuernas, y tienen sus impresiones de quién tendrá mejores cuernas. Veamos algunos hechos interesantes sobre el desmogue de las cuernas. Es bastante conocido que los animales grandes desmogan antes. Esto les permite más tiempo para hacer crecer el siguiente par de cuernas. Pero, ¿qué dice la ciencia? Sorprendentemente, hay muy pocos si es que hay alguno, estudios con gran detalle sobre la fecha de desmogues y los factores que la afectan. Revisaremos más abajo lo que hay publicado hasta ahora, pero un grupo que tiene una de las mejores granjas experimentales del mundo, el del IREC-Univ. Castilla-La Mancha (España), están examinando sus datos de 22 años de cría de ciervos para contestar preguntas como: ¿Qué características de la cuerna influyen sobre la fecha de desmogue (las cuernas más grandes desmogan más tarde o más temprano)? ¿Está la fecha de desmogue asociada a un periodo fijo de crecimiento de modo que las cuernas que empiezan a crecer más tarde también terminan más tarde, o depende de la calidad del macho de modo que machos más grandes hacen crecer cuernas más granes y finalizan su crecimiento antes para desmogarlas antes? Los resultados serán pronto publicados en una serie de artículos, pero podemos anticipar que en los varetos, la fecha de desmogue está relacionada con la calidad de la cuerna (desmogue más temprano para cuernas de mayor calidad), y que esto, a su vez, está relacionado con parámetros corporales.

Sin embargo, estos investigadores no evaluaron la dominancia. Para el valor del trofeo (que es una medida compuesta con la longitud de la cuerna y su peso principalmente) era también muy importante la condición corporal al principio del crecimiento de la cuerna. Este estudio mostró que la cuerna se desmoga (al menos en España) con una media centrada en el 12 de marzo. Inmediatamente tras el desmogue empieza el nuevo ciclo de crecimiento de la cuerna que dura 158 días desde el desmogue al descorreo (para unas cuernas con una longitud final de 81 cm).

Otro estudio de este grupo mostró que había una relación entre los análisis de la sangre (curiosamente, realizados en un hospital normal para humanos), y la longitud de la cuerna: el tamaño final de la cuerna era inverso a varias medidas en la sangre (recuento de leucocitos, de leucocitos no linfoides, amplitud de distribución de glóbulos rojos y otras). Mucho más fácil, de momento, en usar la altura y medidas corporales para predecir el tamaño de la cuerna, pero pronto podrá usar criterios de una serie interesante de artículos que están en camino.

2. INFORME ESPECIAL DE IDUBA III: Mejora Genética del trofeo: ventajas y desventajas de las técnicas reproductivas de mejora genética.

La CIC elaboró una guía sobre lo que es aceptable en la caza natural que específicamente rechaza el uso de las técnicas de manipulación reproductiva para la mejora de trofeos. Probablemente esto deriva del hecho de que son tan efectivas en la mejora genética, que tal mejora lleva a algunos trofeos al punto de que no parecen muy naturales. Tal como discutimos anteriormente, parte de este rechazo proviene en realidad del hecho de que a veces, los criadores de ciervo mezclan líneas de trofeo (Británica o Woburn x centroeuropea, por ejemplo), produciendo ciervos que, en la Europa continental tienen un aspecto muy distinto a la línea evolutiva de los ciervos que viven en esos países.

Vamos a ver primero qué es manipulación reproductiva. Esta la forman un conjunto de técnicas ejecutadas sobre el macho o la hembra para amplificar la eficiencia reproductiva de los mejores machos y hembras. Implica la manipulación de los tiempos de reproducción, y con algunas de las últimas técnicas, incluso la composición del esperma para seleccionar espermatozoides que producen sobre todo descendientes macho. Incluye la sincronización de las hembras, inseminación artificial, y transferencia de embriones entre otras. 3. Hechos sorprendentes: un ciervo pidiendo chocolate como un niño

Probablemente el error número uno de la gente que no tiene experiencia en la cría de ciervos es pensar que pueden ser como perros, muy dóciles, todo el tiempo. Muchos criadores tienen anécdotas sobre ciervos a los que han amamantado a biberón, o que han cuidado como si fuera un perro. En nuestra granja del IREC-UCLM, tuvimos un ciervo que criamos a biberón y que mantuvimos con las ovejas para evitar que lo atacaran otras hembras que protegían sus propias crías. El resultado fue un ciervo que era casi como un perro y que seguía tanto a personas como a ovejas cuando de adulto las veía pasar por delante de su vallado. El error es pensar que será así de dócil todo el tiempo, porque en la berrea se convierten en animales muy agresivos incluso contra sus queridos dueños. Algunos criadores que pensaron que su macho criado a biberón nunca les podría atacar se llevaron una sorpresa, sino incluso heridas, al llegar la berrea.

Aun así, a veces aparecen noticias en la prensa que nos traen otra vez esa idea de que los ciervos se pueden comportar como una mascota. Tenemos dos, una del Daily mail, periódico de GB. En esta, un ciervo aparentemente en Escocia y probablemente con no mucha comida en el campo, vino a oler y comer chocolate desde la ventana de un coche del lado del conductor. ¿Un ciervo especial? Sus primos americanos no parecen ser menos atrevidos o inteligentes. En la segunda fotografía, de Canadá, un alce hace lo mismo, ¡pero sonriendo a cámara!

Concurso Internacional de Cuernas en Letonia. La Latvian Wild Animal Breeders Association, a través de su presidente Dr. Dainis Paeglitis, va a organizar como todos los años, el Concurso Internacional de Cuernas en la granja Saulstari Deer Farm, Sigulda, Letonia. Dada la coincidencia con la reunión de VVS en la República Checa y otras, es posible que la conferencia que se organiza simultáneamente todos los años se convierta en una jornada de formación práctica. El evento tendrá lugar del 25 al 28 de julio (último día para inscripción de cuernas, el 27). El 29 de julio será la ceremonia de entrega y socialización que tan maravillosamente organiza Dainis cada año.

In 2008 started a rabbit farm, but later was turned into Safari Park and bred European red deer. The deer farm has 450 hectares, and next door there is a farm for breeding wild boar. A fenced area for hunting and animal observation has 700 hectares. The red deer farm has 1200 animals, including 450 females and 210 stag (remaining are deer aged 1 - 2 years old). We also have 30 adult sika deer as well as llamas. In addition, the rabbit farm has 10 hectares and there is also an orchard of trees of 1700 ha. Так же имеем 120 взрослых ланей, 30 взрослых пятнистых оленей, есть ламы. В ближайшие несколько лет планируется увеличение поголовья до 2500 голов, уже сейчас ферма вполне рассчитана на рост поголовья. Это обуславливается не только повышенным спросом на мясную продукцию, но и успешным развитием таких направлений как продажа живых оленей, ланей, лам и пантовым оленеводством. Статус племенного хозяйства позволяет успешно продавать оленей и ланей не только в хозяйства и агро-туристические комплексы области, но и на территорию «большой» России. Mushkino es un antiguo coto Alemán llamado Morro, mencionado por primera vez en 1503. Está situado en el suroeste de la región d Kaliningrado, a 60 km del aeropuerto internacional, a 30 km de la ciudad y a 20 km de la frontera con Polonia. En 2008 abrió una granja de conejos, pero fue convertido posteriormente en un Safari Park que cría ciervo común Europeo. La granja de ciervos tiene 450 hectáreas, y al lado hay una granja de jabalíes. Un coto vallado de caza, y zona de observación de animales, tiene otras 700 hectáreas. La granja de ciervos tiene 1200 animales, 450 de ellos hembras, y 210 sementales (el resto son ciervos de 1 - 2 años de edad). También tenemos 30 ciervos sika adultos y llamas. Además, la granja de conejos tiene 10 hectares y hay un parterre de árboles de 1700 ha. Mushkino tiene un complejo turístico atendido por una plantilla de más de 100 personas.
