Mince PiesThese are quick and easy - you could leave out the lard and use just butter or marg.225g plain flourpinch of salt50g lard50g butter410g jar mince meatsplash of brandy (optional)icing sugar for decoratingMethodHeat oven to 200°C. Grease a tart baking tin. Add flour and salt to the bowl of a food processor. Cut the fat into small chunks and add to the processor. Pulse until the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs. Switch the processor to continuouslly on and a tbsp at a time add about 4tbsp ice cold water until you have a smooth dough. Roll out on a flat, floured surface. Using a 3” cutter make 12 x circles and place in the baking tin. Tip the mince meat into a bowl and mix in the brandy if using. Spoon into the pies. Using a 2.5” cutter make 12 x lids. Brush edges with milk and place on top of pies. Brush tops with milk and bake in oven for 20 mins or until golden brown. Dust with icing sugar. If you have any pastry left, repeat. Makes between 12 and 20 pies depending on how thin you roll your pastry and how big your tin is.

Christmas ClassicsSnowy Christmas Log

This easy Christmas cake is based on a recipe from my friend Dena. It is easy and delicious.40 ginger biscuits600ml whipping cream2 tbsp icing sugar1 tsp vanilla extractsherry or orange juicedecorationsrectangular serving plateMethodWhip the cream with the icing sugar and vanilla essence until it is just holding it’s shape. Dip each biscuit in either sherry, orange juice or the tipple of your choice! Just a quick dunk - you don’t want them soggy. Then spread with a teaspoon of cream and sandwich together. You want two rows of 20 biscuits. Then cover the whole lot with the rest of the cream. Use a fork to make the bark pattern then refrigerate overnight if possible. Before serving decorate as you please - I used silver balls and glitter sprinkles.

Granny Annies Triflesmall swiss roll - sliced sherry for soaking sponge150g fresh raspberries110g tin raspberries in juice300ml whipping cream2 tbsp custard powder1 egg1pt milk1 tbsp sugargrated chocolate for decoratingglass trifle bowlMethodPlace sponge slices on bottom of bowl and pour sherry over. Put fresh raspberries on top along with tinned raspberries and 2 tbsp of juice from tin. To make

custard whisk egg with custard powder and sugar in a bowl. Heat milk in a pan til

warm but not boiling. Add custard powder mixture to pan and heat, stirring until it thickens. Allow to cool - sprinke top with caster sugar to prevent a skin forming. When cool spoon over fruit. Whip cream

and spoon over custard. Decorate with grated chocolate.

Hello Ladies,

I hope that you’re well and have been able to enjoy the amazing summer that we have had this year. (We could get used to that couldn’t we?)

But now the winter months are here and it’s time to do some serious shopping - whether it’s just adding some statement pieces to existing outfits or a total wardrobe overhaul!!

So what’s in the shops this season?Lots of monochrome, black and white stripes, spots and checks. Mix it up, clash checks with small prints - it really seems to work if you pick the correct shape and fit for your body shape. You could always add a gorgeous cerise pink overcoat!

Try recharging your wardrobe with a little something in leather/leather look. It’s an absolute must this season. Choose anything from a biker jacket to a pencil skirt. One of my personal favourite looks is a leather pencil skirt teamed with a soft, cashmere baggy sweater and a pair of great boots - very feminine or maybe teaming the same skirt with a crisp white blouse, some patterned tights and heels. One skirt two completely different looks.

An absolute must have this coming festive season is an

Evening Coat....

I can’t remember the last time I saw such a lovely choice of pretty and very

unusual Evening coats. This really pleases me as I’ll never understand how so many ladies take so much time and effort putting together that “perfect outfit” for that special evening ...... trying on countless dresses then trolling around finding the perfect tights and amazing shoes and then plonk on an old black coat from the wardrobe!!

Splash out, spend a little more on the right coat and it will last many seasons and trust me, you will feel so gorgeous. It will make heads turn from the very minute you walk through the door.

Glitz and glamour all around for the festive season - lots of sparkle in gold and silver.

Make it as subtle or as bold as you like, just remember as always HAVE FUN WITH IT!!Penny X

P.SThe next Boutique 11 “in store evening” is Wednesday December 4th, 5.30pm onwards. Join us for a glass of bubbly, new season stock plus some great gift ideas! All welcome!!!!!!

A Nottinghamshire animal charity which provides rescue, rehoming and ambulance services, urgently needs volunteers.

Animal Accident Rescue Unit, a literal lifeline for domestic animals and

wildlife in need, is in urgent need itself of fosterers and drivers. This small charity, entirely manned by volunteers and donation-funded, undertakes essential life-saving work – but this is only possible through its volunteers and funding.

Recently, so many vulnerable cats and dogs have needed help (like blind Angel, pictured), that more fosterers are desperately needed to provide temporary homes for them. Fostering is a most rewarding experience: giving a needy animal the chance to live at home – thus making the cat or dog more comfortable – and increasing its adoption prospects.

Additionally, drivers form a critical element of rescuing the neglected or distressed animals. If you have a few daytime hours to spare, own your vehicle and want to be part of an animal’s lifeline to safety - this could be your perfect ‘job’!

To discover more on these, plus other equally important volunteering opportunities - such as fundraising - call the Recruitment Officer on 0115-9563799 or email [email protected].

Meanwhile, help feed and care for the numerous animals in the charity’s care by shopping for them from the comfort of your chair. Simply go to the Amazon website, choose ‘find a wish list’, enter ‘AARU, Nottingham’ - and buy some lovely items which are then delivered directly to the charity’s animals.

For all other enquiries on helping, call 0115-9321555, email [email protected] or visit www.aaru.org.uk.

Ella’s Teen Talk: Handling Parents

...especially at Christmas!

Ella Higginbotham aged 15

Nextissue:

Handling ParentsHandling ParentsHandling Parents

The date was the 26th July. I was completely unprepared. I couldn’t believe it. I was happily spending my day taking a lovely walk and shopping with my mum when she turned to me and said ‘’Oh I better start thinking about Christmas presents!’’ It was July.

Don’t get me wrong I love getting in the Christmas spirit; going out and buying lots of presents then coming back home and wrapping them with a warming cup of tea and my favourite Christmas CD playing in the background, but that normally occurs about a week before Christmas. Why do some parents insist on starting the preparations for Christmas before the Halloween costumes are even in the shops? Bless them; they just can’t contain their excitement! Well when I say parents, this usually applies to mums. In fact the dads are quite the opposite, waiting until Christmas Eve to approach the shops with a panicked look as they rummage through the scraps of what the women haven’t already brought. So my advice to you is to leave them both to it and just aim to start your preparations somewhere in between so if your parents do get stressed, it isn’t your problem (but don’t tell them that, that wouldn’t help with their stress!) Another parental bug bare of mine around Christmas is the food shopping. Do they think that there will be food shortages for 9 months after Christmas?! Seriously there are only so many mince pies I can eat before I actually resort to fruit as a substitute. I really do appreciate the effort that goes into Christmas dinner (my favourite meal of the year) and indeed the effort in the whole day in general, but it is ruined when we live off the left overs for weeks afterwards.

My last column was about handling money so here is an extra tip for parents: buy half the food that you think you need, for the sake of the children!

In my opinion, winter is the best time of year; coming home from school after battling through the cold and snow to be greeted with a hot chocolate and pyjamas at 4 o’clock in the afternoon, Christmas is just the icing on the cake. Everyone loves the festivities no matter how many times they have been through it or how hard it was to get there so my last tip is this, even if your parents get too overexcited about buying presents or decorating the tree don’t ruin it, it is a magical time for them.

New Years Resolutions...a good thing?

Preparing your Home for the Winter

Top tips from Age UK Notts for preparing your home for those cold winter months;1. Check your radiators are warm at the top and bottom. If cold at top they need bleeding, if cold at the bottom they need flushing.2. Make sure your boiler is serviced. This can prevent those untimely breakdowns.3. Insulation – keeps the house warmer and cuts those energy bills

The increasing popularity of U3A in Nottingham will be demonstrated on Saturday 23rd November, when Gedling Borough Council’s Civic Centre at Arnot Hill Park is given over for the day to three local groups and U3A’s HQ in London, from 10.30 am to 3pm.

The University of the Third Age will be promoting its key attractions to retired and semi-retired people – a new social life with many ‘Interest Groups’, started and managed by its members, to bring a sparkle to retirement and lots of new friends.

Arnold Group, Carlton and Gedling, Nottingham and the Head Office will be represented, with leaflets and stands to promote their activities. These range from art appreciation and bird watching, through gardening, languages and local history, to theatre, travel and walking – well over 40 groups in Arnold alone. Morning coffee and afternoon teas will be served.

With an annual subscription under £20, the U3A brings a lively but inexpensive boost to the fortunes of those in the ‘Third Age’ throughout the country.

For further information, contact: Arnold - 0115 967 9959 | Carlton/Gedling - 0115 911 6419 | Nottingham - 0115 950 8412 | Burton Joyce - 0115 931 2076 | National Office - 020 8466 6139 or email national.office @u3a.org.uk

Celebrate the U3A!Volunteers Wanted for

Books on Wheels Service

Royal Voluntary Service is a national charity with over 70 years experience and 40,000 amazing volunteers of all ages, who support older people to stay independent at home and active in their local community. Our extraordinary history of service to local communities is matched only by our passion to make Britain a great place to grow old.

We would like to recruit Volunteers to our Books on Wheels Service particularly in the Arnold area of Nottinghamshire. The key task would be to deliver and collect library books, CD’s etc for older/housebound people. We are looking for individuals who can drive and have access to a car. However if you cannot drive, there are still opportunities to source and collate books within the Library, and also to go on rounds with other volunteers.

Just a couple of hours every week, fortnight, or month can make a big difference and volunteers can use all the valuable skills and experience they have gained over the years, or develop new ones whilst helping someone in their local area. We provide any training necessary and reimburse expenses so that volunteers are not out of pocket.

To find out more please contact our Service Co-ordinator Christine Precious on 01623 703939, Mobile 07834 753385, email: [email protected]

Are you thriving... or surviving..?

Poor Self Esteem.. Lacking Self Belief.. Worn-out with Problems……. Sometimes, problems come and go. If we have strong personal foundations, and are resourced enough,

we are more likely to move on quickly. If we are lacking self-esteem or, we are dogged by unhappy experiences and limiting beliefs - perhaps from childhood experiences - we may not thrive as

easily. Parks Therapy (PICT) offers a unique experience which is comfortable and rapid offering thorough, and lasting change. Available at Nottingham Natural Health Centre, Carrington.

What is Healthwatch? The primary task of local Healthwatch is to gather evidence from the views and experiences of patients, service users, carers and the public about their local health and social care services. Healthwatch then provides feedback (both positive or critical) to health and social care commissioners, or in serious case scenarios, to the Care Quality Commission or Healthwatch England, in order to effect service change or improvement. Why is Healthwatch needed?Firstly, the structure of the NHS is changing fast and appears to be getting more complicated. Secondly, the current severe budget cuts in Local Authority expenditure (which includes social care services) and the no budget growth position for the NHS (having to meet the needs of an ageing population, more people with long term conditions and rising cost of treatment), is putting increasing strain on the health and social care system. A third factor is the aspiration, long-standing but seldom achieved, of better integrating health and social care services where it makes sense and would save resources. What is Healthwatch Nottinghamshire doing?Healthwatch Nottinghamshire is at the stage of making itself better known and familiar to the people of Nottinghamshire. The “Have Your Say Forms” are available on the webpage. Leaflets are also being distributed and all people who are on the mailing list (some 800 people and rising) receive the monthly newsletter. We are currently recruiting volunteers to act as Healthwatch “champions” or Healthwatch outreach volunteers. So if you want to get involved, perhaps have your say, receive a newsletter, become a volunteer or just to get in touch with your local Healthwatch, then: Phone: 0115 963 5179E: info@healthwatchnottinghamshire.co.ukwww.healthwatchnottinghamshire.co.ukTwitter: @HWNotts

Mayor of Gedling in 2012/13, Councillor Sandra Barnes presented a cheque of £24,270 to a brain tumour charity in August.

Councillor Barnes raised the amount for the children’s brain tumour research centre based at Nottingham University. The money was raised through a number of different events including a music concert, charity dinners and other fundraising events organised by the councillor during her year in office.

The £24,270 will go towards the installation of a fluorescent microscopic camera which will allow the University to improve its ways of investigating brain tumours in children.

Councillor Barnes said: “I’d like to say a huge thank you to all you wonderful, kind people in and around the borough. My husband Peter and I can’t thank you enough for your help in raising a fantastic £24,270.97 for the children’s brain tumour research centre and Headsmart, I’m sure all the children who are going to benefit will say thank you so much too.”

2014 marks the centenary of the First World War. The war was a turning point in world history and effected the lives of everyone globally. Local history groups and organisations around the country are involved in projects to mark the centenary throughout the year. As many of you will know I am the Vice Chairman of the Arnold Local History Group (ALHG) who are one such group looking into the events of 1914-19.

Our group are focussing on those who served and survived to return to Arnold.

In 1913 Arnold Urban District Council bought Arnot Hill House and Arnot Hill Park as a new headquarters for the council. At the outbreak of war in 1914 they were organising their move from the old offices on Front Street but decided to let the Red Cross have the house and grounds for the duration of the war; little did they know that they would not now move in for 5 years.

The building became an Auxillary Hospital run by the combined services of the Red Cross and St Johns Ambulance under the guidance of the local surgeon Dr Francis.

Soldiers wounded in France were shipped back to Arnold by train to Daybrook Station in the middle of the night (so that people would not see a lot of wounded men). They then remained at Arnot Hill until they recovered and were either sent back to the front, invalided out of the service or died.

When conscription was instigated in 1916 there were some, who though called up, were either deferred service or exempted altogether. This could be due to their involvement in war work, working the

farms or in trades where their skills were needed or where they had dependant relatives as well as a few conscientious objectors. Many of these local people volunteered for services such as the Red Cross and St Johns Ambulance, helping with the Auxillary Hospital, playing a vital role in the area.

Arnold Local History Group are very interested in these soldiers and those who cared for them. We would love to know what happened to the men and the hospital staff and would be delighted to hear from anyone whose family were involved or who have family memorabilia of the hospital, its patients and staff. Did any of the staff or patients remain in Arnold? Are their relatives still here?

There will be an exhibition and World War One heritage day in October 2014 when we will be able to show our findings. If you are interested in helping or have any knowledge however small we would love to hear from you. We will keep you up-to-date via our web site www.arnold-history-group.org which also gives details of all our meetings, courses and events.

Ovenu, the Nottingham-based professional oven valeting business, is encouraging local people to give their appliances an early Christmas present, with a pre-festive season valet.

Ovenu’s professional valeters ensure that ovens operate to their full potential, more efficiently and for longer. At Christmas, in particular, when families do a lot of entertaining, there is nothing more embarrassing when the mother-in-law sees smoke, setting of the fire alarm, coming from an oven required to work overtime!

It is also important to keep ovens in top condition for health and safety reasons. For example, spilt oils and cooking fats are two of the main causes of oven fires and an unclean oven can also be a breeding ground for germs.

The Ovenu valeting process is unusual because it involves dismantling key components of an

oven such as the door, interior panels, fan and shelves.

The parts are placed into design-registered equipment, which uses non caustic products to clean the oven parts. The whole process takes around three hours and leaves the oven, hob and exterior in immaculate and safe condition.

Peter Bell from Ovenu, which recently celebrated its tenth anniversary in business, said: “It is really important to ensure ovens are kept in the best condition to make sure they work to their full potential. I think people can give their turkey a treat and impress their mother-in-law by making sure their oven is immaculate for Christmas morning!”

For more information contact Peter Bell at Ovenu on: 01158787048 or visit www.ovenu.co.uk

BEECROFTS JOINERY

All internal & external doors, hard & soft wood, supplied & fitted. All types of wood flooring fitted.

Kitchens supplied and fitted.Happy to undertake any job, large or small.

Brendan Beecroft started his apprenticeship in 1985 aged just 16. He worked in the manufacture of luxury motor boats in Nottingham learning many skills and techniques that were to prove useful later in his working life. Brendan then worked in other areas of the joinery business from cabinet making, kitchen manufacture and fi tting to wood fl oor fi tting, shop fi tting and general joinery work.

"The boat building was a great grounding. When you think about it a boat contains everything you have in a house - beds, doors, cupboards etc. but they all have to be fi tted in a confi ned area where space is at a premium. I learned a lot."

Ten years ago Brendan made the decision to go self employed, "at the time I was doing lots of real wood and laminate fl ooring installations and had some help from local companies but realised I needed to cover a wider spectrum of work to make the most of my abilities. It was a big step but I don't

regret it for a moment, it enabled me to do my own thing and get back to a variety of work using those skills I have built up over the years." Now Beecrofts Joinery offers a complete joinery service from the smallest job right up to full renovations all at competitive prices.

Local Joiner Celebrates 10 Years In Business

“Brendan built us a large, fi tted storage unit...the fi nal result was everything we wanted. We couldn’t be happier with the work and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to others.”

Gedling Borough Council is plugging into the new generation of environmentally friendly vehicles with the introduction of an electric vehicle to its fleet.

The van, the first of its kind purchased by the council, will be used by the council inspectors making visits around the borough.

The vehicle is exempt from road tax and 100% electric. It will reduce the council’s carbon footprint, reduce emissions and

could make financial savings on a vehicle which could travel over 9,000 miles a year.

Kevin McGuiness, Parks and Street Care supervisor, who has been using the van as part of his inspections around the borough said; “The biggest thing you notice is how quiet it is. I don’t miss stopping at the petrol station and overall it’s a very smooth ride. It can do around 80 miles per charge which, at the moment, is enough for me to get around the borough to do my job.”

Councillor Peter Barnes, Portfolio Holder for Environment said; “It makes sense economically and environmentally for us to use these types of vehicles. This electric vehicle is a step in the right direction towards a more sustainable borough and we hope other local authorities and businesses fleets will follow suit.”

The Borough of Gedling is also set to become one of the top sustainable energy providers in the UK thanks to a new solar farm that is to be established in the borough.

Gedling Borough Council approved plans on 7 August 2013 for the solar farm to be installed in the new country park on the former Gedling Colliery site.

The solar panels that will make up the farm will triple the amount of clean energy provided in the borough from 2.38 megawatts of electricity (MWe) to 7.84 MWe, and could generate enough renewable electrical energy to run a 1,000 households - a small village.

To reduce any impact of the farm on local wildlife, developers Re-Fin Solar will install nestboxes

and mounds to enhance the ecological habitat of the area.

Councillor John Clarke, Leader of Gedling Borough Council, said; “The solar farm will provide long term renewable and sustainable energy for our residents. This, in addition to the recent announcement of plans for the Country Park, shows our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and providing a solid sustainability plan for future generations.”

The solar farm is expected to be installed by 2014.

Gedling Becomes More Sustainable

The facts about fracking in NottinghamshireNottinghamshire County Council is publishing a fracking factsheet for residents following a surge in enquiries prompted by recent media coverage on the issue. To date, Nottinghamshire County Council has not received any planning applications for exploration, testing or production of shale gas using fracking or any other method of extraction.

The Council is reassuring residents and other interested groups that if plans were ever received in the future, they would be extensively publicised and subject to full consultation with the public and other relevent agencies. The Council's factsheet sets out the process any operator would have to go through before being given permission to carry out any fracking activity.

The factsheet can be downloaded from: www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/thecouncil/democracy/planning

Two new schemes to encourage owners of empty properties to bring them back into use are being launched by Gedling Borough Council and Gedling Homes.

The council is launching a new Empty Property Matchmaker page on its website to give owners of empty homes an opportunity to advertise the property for free to potential investors who can offer to either buy the house outright or provide financial investment to bring it back into use.

Gedling Homes has secured funding from the Homes and Communities Agency to bring a number of empty homes back into use. The Empty Homes Programme allows them to lease properties that have been left empty for more than 6 months, and to act as landlord on behalf of the owner. Gedling Homes will undertake work to make the properties lettable, find tenants, and the owner is not required to do anything. Owners will receive a guaranteed rental income for the term of the lease.

Councillor John Clarke, Leader of Gedling Borough Council said; “We don’t want to see properties lying empty when we have so many people looking for somewhere to live. Along with Gedling Homes, we want to get empty houses back into use and turn them back into homes.”

If people would like to join the Gedling Borough Council matchmaker scheme they can visit www.gedling.gov.uk/emptyhomes or to join the Gedling Homes programme they can email [email protected]

FLASH FOR CASH – A NEW INSURANCE SCAM

Everyone has heard about fraudulent insurance claims for whiplash. However, as Beth Fisher, a personal injury specialist at Rothera Dowson solicitors explains, there is a new type of scam on the rise on Nottinghamshire’s roads.

You may have heard of the old scam called ‘crash for cash’, in which drivers deliberately slam on the brakes so hard that the car behind crashes into them. They then fraudulently claim for whiplash. The scammers will even remove the bulbs in their brake

lights so other drivers don’t know they’re stopping.

Now, though, people have got wise to the game, so there’s a new trick. “Flash for cash” involves drivers flashing their lights to let other drivers out of a junction, then crashing into them on purpose – claiming that they didn’t flash their lights, of course. It’s hard to prove what happened because often it is one driver’s word against the other. In a particularly cruel move, gangs tend to target vulnerable road users, such as the elderly or women with children in their cars. The scammers often also have a car full of people, each of whom then put in a separate injury claim for whiplash. They can even sometimes claim for people who weren’t in the car. And it doesn’t just stop at fake injuries. Claims for loss of earnings, vehicle storage, recovery, repairs and replacement car hire have all been known to crop up in these cases, to milk the situation. Fraudulent accident claims such as this and driving without insurance is a growing problem, costing insurers £392m a year. In turn, this puts a huge extra burden on honest drivers, adding an extra £50 to £100 on top of every premium. The Highway Code says that drivers should only use their headlights to let other road users know that they are there. They should not flash to convey any other message or intimidate other road users. Whilst most drivers may have good intentions when flashing their headlights to let another driver out at a junction, gangs who take advantage of innocent drivers are now abusing this courtesy. Motorists need to avoid assuming that flashing headlights is a signal inviting them to proceed. They need to use extra-careful judgement and caution before setting off, only after they are satisfied that it is safe to go ahead.

If you think that you might have been a victim of such a crash, try to take as many photographs as you can of the scenario and the damage to both cars and make a record of what happened. Sometimes the debris and angles can be more telling than the scammers might be banking on. Of course, a good solicitor will be able to talk to you honestly and clearly about where you stand.

Have you ever fancied flying into New York, jetting out to Paris or taking off from Sydney? You now can without even taking your feet off the ground. SimSpot, based on the top floor of the Cornerhouse, gives customers the chance to take the controls of a Boeing 737-800 inside a next generation, state-of-the-art flight simulator. It is one of the only flight simulators of its kind in the UK open to the public.

Following a briefing with a qualified pilot, visitors choose to fly in or out of over 24,000 airports around the world, including the famous skyscraper skyline into Hong Kong, or landing at Geneva Airport after passing over the snow-covered Alps. Session lengths range from 20 minutes, with prices starting from £49, to a five-hour simulator course.

Cat’s son Kieran got the chance to test it out: “On 19th September we got an amazing opportunity to fly the Boeing 747 simulator in the Cornerhouse. From the moment I took off, through the oops bit, where I crashed, to the victorious moment when I landed without crashing, it was a memorable experience that I will never forget. I even enjoyed watching my dad try to land in the old Hong Kong airport.” Kieran (15)

Autumn is here and this year’s tree planting season is fast approaching. Now is the perfect time to plant trees to make local communities and schools more attractive as well as providing shade and encouraging wildlife. To help schools, community groups and parish councils to plant trees in school grounds or on community green spaces the Greenwood Community Forest Team is once again offering free advice and funding for tree planting of up to £500. This year, thanks to Nottinghamshire County Council’s Local Improvement Scheme, funding is available for planting throughout Nottinghamshire.

Projects could include planting to provide areas of shade, creating or enhancing a wildlife area, memorial trees, screening unsightly areas or healthy living projects such as planting apple trees.

To be eligible, your scheme must have the permission of the landowner, be located on school grounds or publicly accessible land and involve the school and/or local community.

The deadline for applications is 13th December 2013, but funding is limited so parish councils, groups and schools are encouraged to apply early.

Guidance notes and an application form are available at www.greenwoodforest.org.uk.

For further information or advice on developing your project including the types of trees contact the Greenwood Team on 0115 969 6533 or email [email protected].

It isn’t Christmas in our house until my children have been to see a pantomime… but oh yes it is.

We’ve bought our tickets for this year so it must mean the festive season is a mere mince pie away and that also signals my last column of 2013 (save your booing for the theatre).

Now we approach winter and, with more people out enjoying themselves, darker nights and bad weather, the festive season marks one of the busiest times of year for us.

I don’t want to come across as an Ebenezer Scrooge or dampen anyone’s festive spirit but I’d like to talk about violent crime.

Violent crime can have an impact on us all. Victims, families, and communities all feel the consequences when someone they know or care about gets hurt. Those who read or hear about strangers being assaulted will be affected, and this can change the way they live their lives.

In October we launched a force-wide campaign on violent crime and we’ve been targeting different areas within this including alcohol abuse and antisocial behaviour, robbery and hate crime.

We did a lot of work around alcohol abuse in September and I’m sure many of you will have seen some of the operations we led in Mapperley highlighting the realities of dealing with drunkenness, alcohol-related incidents, and the impact they have on the police service.

You’ve no doubt seen that we’ve since extended our focus to cover domestic abuse, robbery and hate crime, which sadly can rise of at this time of year.

We have seen evidence of the life-changing impact violence can have – through serious injury, physical, emotional and mental trauma or even death. Acts of violence do change people’s lives.

Our action has and will continue to focus on preventing these sorts of crime from taking place through; early intervention work, targeting known offenders, and educating people including our own colleagues and partners on these issues.

As we come to the end of 2013 I’d also like to say a big thank you all of our community volunteers. Perhaps you are in a neighbourhood watch group, you work as a street pastor, you’ve give up your time to help with an appeal or campaign or your volunteer your services in another way, whatever input you’ve had with us please know it has been enormously helpful.

Can I ask for your continued help through this festive season and into the New Year? Please be on the look out for anything unusual or suspicious. If it doesn’t look right, then it probably isn’t! Give us a call and let us know straight away. Please keep your doors locked and lights on when you are out. I know this might sound wasteful of electricity, but if you use low energy bulbs, the real impact is greatly reduced. Use timer switches where possible to have lamps coming on and going off at times when you are out

Remember, if you see something suspicious, ring us and say what is happening. Don’t leave it until the next day – we won’t be able to find them by then.

We want to ensure Christmas and 2014 is a happy and peaceful one for all of us.

From your Neighbouorhood Beat Team.....
