    THE BREVIARYNicholas Flamel

That is done in the Name of God, Amen. The first step in Wisdom is the fear of God.

    FOREWORD. THEORY

I, Nicholas Flamel, Clerk of Paris, in this year of 1414, of the rein of o!r "lessed prince Charles

#I, may God "less, and after the death of my faithf!l companion Perrenelle, remem"erin of her,

    I am taken "y fantasy and $oy to %rite in yo!r fa&o!r dear nephe%, the %hole mastery of the

secret of the Pro$ection Po%der or Philosophical Tinct!re, that concede God to i&e for his

insinificant serf, that I did as yo! %ill do if yo! proceed as I %ill tell yo!. Follo%, therefore,

%ith art and !nderstandin the speeches of the Philosophers concernin the secret, "!t yo! don't

take their %ritins to the letter, "eca!se altho!h they can "e !nderstood accordin to the Nat!re,

they %o!ld not "e !sef!l to yo!. Therefore, don't foret to pray God that i&e yo! !nderstandinof reason, of tr!th and of nat!re, so that yo! see in this "ook, in %hich is %ritten the secret %ord

     "y %ord and pae the pae, and as I did and %orked %ith yo!r dear a!nt Perrenelle, that I

remem"er so intensely. Th!s, I placed the mastery in this "ook, so that yo! don't foret of the

reat ood that God rants yo! and that (e fa&o!rs yo!. This is so that yo! don't foret, in its

memory, to sin and to psalmodies in yo!r praises and nothin can "e more ade)!ate to cele"rate

    s!ch ood e&ent than e*alted sons. Th!s, I %rote this "ook "y my o%n hand, and that it had

destined to the +aint-ac)!es ch!rch, "ein of the said parish, after findin A"raham the -e% 's

"ook, I didn't %ant to sell this for money and I kept it %ith m!ch care to %rite in it the said secret

of the alchemy in letters and characters of my imaination, for %hich I i&e yo! the key. Take

care, therefore, of maintainin it secret and don't e&er foret to keep in silence and remem"er me,%hen I am in the s!dari!m, remem"erin that I prepared s!ch doc!ment, so that yo! "ecome

yo!rself a reat master in philosophic alchemy, "eca!se this is my pleas!re, desire, comfort and

fantasy to rant yo! s!ch secret.

Th!s, do like I did and make kno%n that I am of ad&anced and decrepit ae and e&erythin in

hono!r of God and Ch!rch helpin the poor needy %ido%s and orphans like I ha&e to this ho!r

fo!nded rents and hospitals and decorate d t%entyt%o ho!ses of God in loyalty and de&otion.

Th!s listen to yo!r doc!ment and place it deep in yo!r heart and do not di&ere from the path of

the tr!th. Th!s, keep secret this mastery, prey and in&oke the (oly +pirit enlihtenin o!r

intentions and o!r spirit in s!ch a %ay to %ork Alchemy in the path of Nat!re.

    THEORY OF FLAMEL

I am oin, therefore, to "ein yo!r doc!ment "y clear and f!ll sermon so that it doesn't conf!se

yo!r !nderstandin, "efore tellin some thins on the practice of %ork. I %anted to "rin yo!,

thro!h the theory, to kno% %hat is the alchemy, that is to say, the science of con&ertin metallic

"odies in old and perfect sil&er, &estin health to the h!man "odies and transformin rocks and

stones )!ickly in tr!e and precio!s /ems0. This kno%lede, has no other similar one that e*ist,

and "y it is constit!ted an art %itho!t parallel, that is to say, Philosophic, "y %hich is made a

!ni&ersal medicinal "ody con&ertin +at!rn, ars, -!piter, oon and erc!ry in p!re, clear,

"rilliant, limpid +!n and of the colo!r of this mineral, "!t still "etter than any metallic old and

that incl!de in itself the &irt!e and the po%er to heal all illness, ad&ance the de&elopment of any&eeta"les "efore its term and of transformin all stones in diamonds and r!"ies. +!ch art and

mastery is made "y the %ay of Nat!re, "y the appropriate reime of fire and "y the ind!stry of

the operator. Proceedin in e&erythin %ith the nat!ral reason of !nderstandin, little "y little

yo! %ill finish the %ork if yo! ne&er et tired of cookin %ith patience, %itho!t an*iety.

Th!s so that the philosophical %ork may "ein, %hich is on the co!rse of Nat!re, as an

!nderstandin man, yo! sho!ld seek t%o main intentions2 the first is the riht !nderstandin of

the thins that I %ill tell yo!. 3eca!se me, %ell "efore to %ork and to "ein the s!ita"le %ay, as

an !nderstandin man, had already the !nderstandin in the nat!re of merc!ry, s!n and the

sat!rnia, as I said in my "ook %here is enra&ed the ill!strations that yo! %ill see in the cemeteryarches. &en so, I %as retained for more than t%entythree and a half years in tryin to con$!ate

the moon, that is the )!icksil&er, %ith the s!n and to e*p!rate the dres of the s!n and the

seminal moon, a deadly poison "eca!se I didn5t kno% the aent or the medi!m to !se in

    fortifyin the erc!ry, "eca!se, %itho!t this medi!m, it is as &!lar %ater, it cannot dissol&e the

moon, the s!n or, as yo! fortify %ater, this merc!ry is fortified in the same manner so that later,

"y force of manip!latin and %ork, finally I disco&ered in the fo!rth and fifth lea&es of my "ook

    of A"raham.

For this reason, the second intention is to kno% ho% yo! sho!ld fortify this merc!ry thro!h the

metallic aent, %itho!t %hich is not possi"le, in another %ay, to reach the inner of the s!n and of

the moon, the ones %hich, "ein hard, they cannot "e open %itho!t the s!lph!ro!s spirit of the

old and of the moon. Th!s, it is necessary to proceed "y ha&in them "e toether %ith the

metallic aent, that is to say, the royal sat!rnia and then after, fortify the merc!ry "y the

philosophical art so that, then, this dissol&es in li)!e!r the s!n or the moon, remo&e the

sinificant dres of its p!trefaction. 6no% that no other form e*ist nor mastery of %orkin in this

art "esides the one that I i&e to yo!, %ord for %ord, %hose %ork is not easy to accomplish and

thorny in disco&erin, if it "e not ta!ht as I tell yo!, "eca!se the +!n and oon are &ery hard

"odies that cannot "e totally opened e*cept "y the merc!rial spirits fortified "y %ays and

philosophical proced!res. &erythin else is false and ind!ces to fail!re and deception as I

%orked in reat displeas!re, for a lon time, and %itho!t that proced!re, the merc!ry stays cold,

hydropic and earthy and is %itho!t plenty of force in that case to penetrate deep in the &iscera ofthe t%o perfect "odies +!n and oon. If the merc!ry is not pre&io!sly %armed !p %ith the

metallic s!lph!ro!s fire, its soft %ater o!t of its "ody and has not re$ected its faecal and "lack

earth, it is still &!lar merc!ry. In that state, penetratin in their %om"s and they in he5s, they

take in astral life, ro%th and &eetation, they "ecome ali&e, $!st as they %ere in the rocks of the

mines. 3y this %ay is made the con$!ation of the philosophical s!n, moon and of the merc!ry,

"!t not the &!lar ones and not in any other %ay. 3!t ho% can the merc!ry "e fortified like this7

Ponders, in first place, that no other %ater, "esides the merc!ry, e*tracts the +!lph!r of the

metal's %om", in a %ay, that %itho!t it, in the "einnin, in the middle and in the end, none can

open nor do anythin that is ood, "eca!se it is the attracti&e &irt!e, made acti&e, that makes

    e&erythin and "ecomes enross %ith the s!lph!r, $!st as the s!lph!r li&es of it.

What yo! see of the mines, %ater of dry s!lph!ro!s &apo!r and merc!rial %et &apo!r is made allmetals, "eca!se, one and other lo&e each other and attract a con&enient nat!re to itself, that is to

say, the nat!re p!rs!es its nat!re, and ne&er in another %ay do proceed the instr!ment of the

Nat!re, e&en in the art, "eca!se one lo&es its companion as the female attracts the male to

herself, re$oicin from time to time, as %hat yo! see in &ery clear and racef!l enra&in in the

    imae of the Fo!rth ill!stration, %here I displayed the yo!n merc!ry %ith the cad!ce!s and the

    horri"le serpents aro!nd the old stick that he holds in his hand2 "eca!se, %itho!t this, I ne&er

    %o!ld kno%n the hermetic merc!ry, %hich %e compose "y the art and philosophical ind!stry of

the metallic s!lph!r and merc!ry, in the first preparation.

Take care in !nderstandin my %ords, %ritten %ith honesty and of oodfaith in yo!r intention, dear and lo&ed nephe%, so that yo! don't fail and "e to God for the sal&ation of my so!l and !se

it in the %ay of fairness of o!r ood God, to %ho I "e that, from no% on, rant yo! health of the

"ody, !nderstandin, intention, $!dicio!s %ill, rectit!de and heart loyalty. 3elie&es firmly that the

%hole art of the ind!stry resides in the philosophical merc!ry preparation, since in it is

e&erythin that %e intended and %hat intended the old saes and that !s, $!st as them, ha&e

nothin less to do than to prepare it %ith the s!n and the moon, "eca!se, %itho!t it, nothin

e*ists in the %hole m!ndane sphere that can prod!ce the said philosophical and medicinal

tinct!re. The nat!ral art is in learnin ho% to e*tract of it the li&e and spirit!al seed contained in

its &iscera and "o%els %hich seed is the matter so praised "y the saes in their %ritins and

"ooks, %hich affirm, %itho!t artifice or fallacy, that the matter of the m!tati&e tinct!re of the

metals in old is one and only and dissol&es tr!ly e&erythin %itho!t falsification or deception,

altho!h they say nothin of its preparation. This one lies in these three only, no%here else,

"eca!se in other metallic "odies it is not as ood, it is &itiated and spoiled, %hile, here, it is p!re,

    a!thentic and tr!e.

8"ser&e then, that one thin doesn't i&e anythin if it doesn5t possess it, and "y conse)!ence,

seek only the s!n and the moon, as %ell as the merc!ry ela"orated "y the philosophical art,

daintily prepared, that doesn't %et the hands, %hich metal is in itself a s!lph!ro!s metallic so!l,

that is, the ineo!s liht and, so that yo! don't stray of the riht %ay, seek the metals, and there is

the said s!lph!r enclosed daintily indeed, almost similar to the s!n. 9o! %ill find it in to ca&es

and depths of the ones that are made of iron, of old and of "rass /is it "rass or copper0, that is tosay, the s!n almost p!rest from one to the other, and if yo! are a%are, s!ch s!lph!r has the po%er

to dye the h!mid and cold moon, that is fine sil&er, in p!re yello% and ood old, "!t it is

necessary that it "e done "y the spirit!al medicine, that is to say, the key that disco&ers and opens

all metals that I %ill tell yo!. No%, think a"o!t %hich mineral is a thief that eats e&erythin

e*cept the old and the moon, that t!rns ood this thief, "eca!se %hen it has them in its %om",

them it is ood and capa"le to prepare the )!icksil&er as I %ill teach yo! in its time.

    PRACTICE

Th!s, do not de&iate from the riht path and refer to my other e*planations. +oon after, %ork in

the practice that I %ill s!rrender to yo! on "ehalf of the Father, of +on and of the (olly +pirit,

    Adora"le Trinity. Amen.

9o! %ill seek, first, to take the first"orn child of +at!rn that is not the &!lar, : parts, of the steel

sa"re of the %arrin God, 4 parts. akes these to r!"ify in a cr!ci"le. When it is red and melted,

po!r inside the : parts of +at!rn, as I told yo!. This %ill eat the other )!ickly2 clean &ery %ell the

faecal dres that arise to the top of +at!rnia %ith nitre and tartar, for fo!r or fi&e times. It %ill "e

ood %hen yo! see an astral sin like a star o&er the re!l!s.

Th!s, of old is made the key and the chopper that opens and c!ts all metals, "!t a"o&e all, the

    s!n, the moon and merc!ry, all of %hich he eats, de&o!r and keeps in its %om". 9o! %ill ha&e

this %ay the riht enineerin and !nderstandin if yo! %orked as is riht, "eca!se this sat!rnineis the tri!mphant real her" "eca!se it is the moon, and the little imperfect kin that %e promote

to the deree of reat lory and hono!r and is also the )!een, that is to say, the moon and the

    %ife of the s!n.

Th!s, it is male and female and o!r hermaphrodite, that is the merc!ry and is the real %ork in

imae of the se&enth leaf and first ift of -e%ish A"raham, %hich is t%o serpents aro!nd a stick

of old, as yo! %ill see in this "ook that I made myself in my fantasy, in the "est %ay that I co!ld

represent, for discernment and as philosophical doc!ment. Take care, then, in ettin a ood

    s!pply and pro&ision, "eca!se it is necessary that yo! o"tain a lare amo!nt, 1; or 1< po!nds or

more, if yo! %ant to %ork in many operations.

9o! %ill marry, then, the yo!n merc!ry, that is to say, the )!icksil&er %ith the philosophical

merc!ry sat!rnial, so that, thro!h it, yo! can enco!rae and fortify the said common )!icksil&er

     "y =, and e&en 1> to 11 times %ith the a"o&ementioned aent, called key or sa"re of sharp steel,

so that it c!ts efficiently and penetrate in the "ody of the metals. When yo! ha&e accomplish this

mastery, yo! %ill possess the do!"le or triple %ater, painted in the ?ose"!sh imae, of the "ook

of A"raham the -e%, %hich trickles from the "ase of an oak tree, that is to say, of o!r +at!rnia,

that is the key, and precipitate itself in the a"yss, as affirms the said -e%, meanin in the recei&er

that is attached to the retort throat, %here %ill fall the referred do!"le merc!ry, "y art of a

     proportionate s!ita"le fire.

    3!t here it meets a rie&o!s thorn, impossi"le e&en to %ork if God doesn't re&eal the referred

secret or a master doesn't transmit it, "eca!se the merc!ry does not con$!ated %ith royal

+at!rnia %itho!t a thin that is occ!lt in the riht art and to "e e*amined as to ho% it is made and

    ho% it %orks, "eca!se if yo! don't kno% ho% is made the &alo!r and peace %ith the mentioned

    )!icksil&er, yo! %ill find nothin that is %orth. Th!s, dear and "elo&ed nephe%, as I don't intend

to hide anythin, so I to tell yo! e&erythin %itho!t keepin anythin and to sho% yo! as yo!

sho!ld disco&er correctly, step "y step, %hat is necessary in this philosophical mastery, therefore,

    I %ill tell yo! that, %itho!t s!n or the moon, the said %ork %on't "e profita"le to yo!. 9o! %ill

make the old man or &oracio!s %olf, eat old or sil&er, in %eiht and meas!re, as I %ill tell yo!.

Pay attention to my e*planations so that yo! don't make mistake and fail as it happened me in

this task. (o% is it then that yo! i&e to eat the old to o!r old draon7 ?eflect on this %ith ood

    sense, "eca!se if yo! i&e little old to the melted +at@rnia, it %ill open &ery %ell, "!t the)!icksil&er %on't take life here an inconr!o!s thin that it %on't "e !sef!l, in that I %orked

m!ch, f!ll of sadness, "efore findin the correct %ay of doin. +o, if yo! i&e it to eat a lot of

    old, it %on't "e so open and disposed, "!t it %ill a"sor" the )!icksil&er soon and "oth %ill "e

con$!ated in paste. Boes as yo! sa% me do. Notice that it is necessary to handle e&erythin

    accordin to the %eihts that I tell yo! "eca!se %itho!t that yo! %on't %ork in yo!r profit, "!t in

yo!r detriment, remem"er it. There is the fo!nd proced!re. +eal the secret, "eca!se it is

e&erythin and ne&er %rite it on paper, nor any other thin that one can see %ritten, "eca!se %e

%o!ld "e the ca!se for the damae of the profane !ni&erse. +o I transmit it !nder the riid secret

of the secret of the conscience, for the lo&e that I ha&e for yo!.

Take parts of fine clean and p!red old :, 1> to 11 times only "y the &oracio!s %olf and then

after 11 parts /;> in Alchimie de Flamel, +a&ary editions, p.;D0 of the +at!rnia, and melt it in a

cr!ci"le. When they are melted, po!r in the of fine old, melt "oth and stir %ith a "!rnin coal.

    9o!r old %ill react a little. Po!r it on a mar"le, po%dered, %ith 1; of )!icksil&er. ake them as

"!tter or cheese "y mi*in and tossin one and another, here and there, from time to time,

%ashin %ith clean tap %ater, !ntil that the %ater comes o!t clear and the mass seems clear and

    %hite /yo! %ill do like this %ith the melted moon0. Then is made the con$!nction %ith solar

+at!rnia. As soon as it is like "!tter, yo! %ill take the mass that yo! %ill dry slo%ly %ith a thin

cloth, %ith m!ch art. (ere is o!r lead and o!r mass of old and moon, not the common, "!t

philosophical. No% place them, in a ood refractory m!d retort, prefera"le of steel, after in an

    o&en, and i&e it fire, heatin !p little "y little. Adapt a s!ita"le recei&er to the retort for t%o

ho!rs and &i&ify the fire so m!ch that the merc!ry passes to the recei&er. This is the merc!ry or

%ater of the "loomin rose"!sh, the "lood of the innocent ones in the "ook of A"raham the -e%,

"ein the %ater of the philosophical old and of the moon. 9o! can "elie&e that this merc!ry ate

a little of the 6in's "ody and it can dissol&e %ith m!ch more po%er the other, after it "e more

    co&ered %ith the +at!rnia "ody.

9o! %ill ha&e, like this, one !p a step or echelon in the stair%ay of the art. Take the faeces o!t

of the retort, melt them in a cr!ci"le to stron fire, e*tractin the %hole sat!rnine smo, and

%hen the old melted is clean, inf!se inside, as the first time, t%o of +at!rnia. Then is the s!n I

inf!sed in the said faeces m!ch more open than the first time, and as the merc!ry is no% moreacid than "efore, it %ill ha&e ac)!ired m!ch more strenth and &io!r to scr!tinise and, so to

speak, to de&o!r it and to fill its %om" little "y little. Pay attention, dear nephe%, to the derees

of the art of Nat!re and of the ?eason, so that yo! arise "y the echelons at the hihest le&el of the

    Philosophy, that is on all the co!rse of Nat!re and that %o!ld ha&e ne&er fo!nd if I didn't

transmit to yo! this mastery. Therefore, "less the Eord for he ranted me to i&e yo!, "eca!se
