The first stop on this series is Wabi Sabi Japanese Restaurant. Nestled in Columbia city’s historical district, Wabi Sabi offers a contemporary and fine dining experience. WI15/T-05 Guided TourSNOWSHOEING IN A WINTER WONDERLAND Snowshoe your way through the woods towards a beautiful. The destination is Gold Creek Pond. Gentle terrain in this scenic valley near Snoqualmie Pass pro-vides a nice opportunity for beginner-level snowshoe fun. Round trip 1-2 miles, 100 foot gain. Snowshoes, poles, instruction, and expert guide are included. If you are capable of walking at least 2 miles on dry ground you will be able to enjoy this snowshoe trip. Beginners are welcome. This fascinating three-hour each and three-day session writing workshop will help you write down your mem-oirs. Memoirs preserve the stories of our lives and cap-ture moments in history. Your perceptions of people, places and experiences are unique. Local author Janine Brodine will lead you in writing techniques that will help you capture forgotten moments and bring them to life on paper. Prepare to do some writing during each session and to share some writing with the class. Please bring paper or a computer to class. If you have a short memoir already written, please bring that to the first class.

NEW WI15/W-18SHIRLEY’S CREATIVE JAPANESE COOKING – SHIO RAMENA fabulous cooking instructor and food blogger, Shirley Karasawa of Lovely Lanvin, loves to share her Japanese cooking recipes. She lives in both Tokyo and Seattle so it is her passion to keep up with Japanese trendy recipes. There is a ramen boom in Seattle re-cently, new and old restaurants serving ramen, and even ramen at a farmers market! Shirley is introducing her original Shio Ramen (a Japanese soup noodle dish). Shio means salt in Japanese but Shio Ramen isn’t overly salty, it just means the main seasoning in the soup is salt. With homemade ramen soup from scratch you will never want to open a package of instant ramen and it is so much healthier for you and your family.

Tapas is Spanish for appetizers or snacks. The Hawaiian term is Pu-Pu. These small plates are deli-cious by themselves and a variety of them make a wonderful meal. In this class you’ll learn how to make and of course taste some of my favorite small plates; savory Sichuan Sweet and Sour Spare Ribs, freshly made ricotta cheese drizzled with honey on toasted crostini, an island favorite Spicy Ahi Poke…and more. These delectably addictive dishes will have friends and family wanting more. This class involves no cook-ing by students, so just bring your questions and an appetite. WI15/W-21 Living Independently Series WINTER FIRE SAFETY FOR SENIORSWinter Fire Safety is a very important and timely issue. This workshop is designed to inform seniors and their caregivers about Fire Safety. It’s a fact that the elderly, aged 65 and over, face a higher risk of experiencing home fires compared to that of the rest of the popu-lation. Bill Mace from the Seattle Fire Department will discuss the important steps that seniors can take to remain safe from a fire – whether living independently or in a care facility.

WI15/W-22 Living Independently Series COMMON SENSE SELF-DEFENSE This workshop is designed to learn basic Self-Defense skills when you are out and about. Chief Instructor of Seven Star Women’s Kung Fu, Michelle McVadon, has taught self-defense to a wide range of population including seniors for 25 years and developed an ex-tensive self-defense curriculum. Also learn tips to use things we normally carry like keys, credit cards, um-brellas, etc., to defend ourselves. Please join this hands on and fun workshop.

WI15/W-24 Living Independently Series FOREIGN ACCOUNT AND ASSET REPORTING – WHAT US TAXPAYERS NEED TO KNOW

We will review the current report-ing requirements for the FBAR Form 114 and SSFA Form 8938. FINCEN and the IRS have issued various rules and taxpayer guidance statements that US taxpayers should know. WI15/W-25 Living Independently Series AARP SMART DRIVER COURSE AARP Smart Driver is the nation’s first and largest driver safety course designed specifically for drivers age 50+ and is intended to help drivers live more inde-pendently as they age and to ensure that they remain safe on today’s roads. This course covers defensive driving techniques and the normal changes in vision, hearing, and reaction time associated with aging, and also provides practical techniques for adjusting to these changes to ensure the driver’s own safety and that of others on the road. During the course, partici-pants learn about current rules of the road and how to operate their vehicles more safely in today’s increas-ingly challenging driving environment. Although the course is geared toward drivers 50+, it can be taken by licensed drivers of all ages, and there are no tests. For workshops and local tours, you must withdraw 10 days before the date of the workshop, in order to receive full tuition credit. A credit will not be granted after the second class, except in the case of a medical emergency. In such cases, a copy of a doctor’s order is required. Credits are valid until they are used up to take other classes. Refund checks take 2~3 weeks to process. Annual membership will not be refunded or credited in any case.

WAIVER: All participants must sign a Nikkei Concerns Waiver on the registration form each quarter before attending any class, workshop or tour.

IMPORTANT NOTES: Registrations are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration is complete when full payment is received.

• Only those properly registered for a class or tour may participate. • Students will NOT be contacted prior to the start of a class or workshop unless it is cancelled or they are placed on the waiting list. • Those on a class, workshop or tour waiting list must be paid in full and will be notified as openings occur. MEMBERSHIP FEE: $30 annual membership fee (non-refundable) is valid from September 2014 through August 2015.

PARKING: For classes at the Seattle Buddhist Church (SBC), students may use the church parking lot on the corner of 16th Ave. S. and S. Main St. For classes at Nikkei Manor, parking is limited. For classes at Bellevue Children’s Academy, parking is available on site. Please carpool or use public transportation whenever possible. Nikkei Concerns is not responsible for any loss or damage for parked vehicles and/or contents at any location.

TOURS: Most tours depart from the SBC parking lot (SBC/PL) on the corner of 16th Ave. S. & S. Main St. Return time is always approximate. Only those with confirmed reservations will receive a reminder telephone call from Nikkei Horizons staff prior to the tour date.

CLASSES: Classes are scheduled for 8 weeks, unless otherwise specified.
