seun gespaar is.

Geweld bring dorp tot stilstandnie,” voeg Mokhonoana by.

WATERBERG HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER

berg NewsFor the learners by the learners...

The new editorial team from Waterberg High School under the leadership of Ms Marici Welding.

By H2Oberg News coordinator Lerato Tapala

Waterberg High School in Mokopane ap-proached Northern News to assist with a school newspaper. H2O is the symbol for water and the learners felt they wanted something fun and fresh to depict a school with its eye on the future. With a 100% pass rate the past five years, Waterberg has established itself as a quality school with a solid academic plan in place.

In 2014, Waterberg was one of only nine schools in Limpopo boasting a 100% pass rate and, says principal, André Horn, the school has been named as one of the Top 40 schools in the province.

To add to its already impressive track-re-cord, Waterberg learners decided to produce a school newspaper quarterly. H2Oberg News will be produced quarterly and will be sponsored by the community by way of advertising. The content will be produced by learners assisted by Northern News.

As an Eco-School, it is worthwhile noting that the newspaper will be printed on news-print paper from responsible sources (see www.fsc.org).

The original idea for H2Oberg News came from learner Karabo Mathibela, who feels priviledged to be part of the launch team. "It is very important to be informed about the world they live in and the place they spend about seven or eight hours daily," he says. "My need for wanting something dif-ferent has seen me put together a team that loves literature and journalism," he explains. "This will be the first newspaper that Water-berg High School has ever produced and we look forward to building on it."

By now, it is a tradition to welcome the Grade 8’s to Waterberg High School in style. The Green Horn Concert is an event organised for the 'fresh-out-of-the-pod' learners.

They are given a platform to “introduce” themselves by showing off their talents to the school at large.

The support the Grade 8's received from the school was amazing this year - the school hall was packed and the concert was worth watching.

The “freshers” expressed themselves through poetry, dance, singing and for the very first time, sharing the word of God! So not only are they talented, but courageous and bold!

Hats off to the Grade 8’s of 2015 for showing extremely great efforts in preparing for the event. Your confidence is admirable and your love for the stage is awesome!

Athletes shineBy Kevin Molele

Waterberg High School has been known as an academic school, however, the year 2015 has brought vibrant and passionate athletes to the forefront.

Representing the school in both track and field events, the athletes gathered at the school's Interhouse in January. Variou learners qualified for the Bosveld Inter High at Hoërskool Piet Potgieter. A number of ath-letes also participated in the Districts Cham-pionships held at Settlers Agriculture School as well as the Limpopo Championships in Polokwane.

The school also takes part in winter sports such as netball (headed by Mrs Lebelo), swimming lessons headed by Ms Welding and it offers extra mural activities such as cheerleading, drummies and chess.

Waterberg includes swimming as part of its sport activities for the first time in 2015. Some 25 swimmers have started training at the basic level at the public pool under the watchful eye of Ms M. Welding and assisted by the municipal staff working at the pool.

This year the environmental committee members got themselves a green flag. Waterberg High School is officially an eco-school.

Still aiming for the gold status, the school is on a mission. Going green and saving the planet, that’s the motto.

With Mr Nkuna on their side, the environ-mental team is going strong and making it their business to give back to the community. It’s their way of saving the world, picking up litter and saving water. With more than 30 mem-bers this time around we aim to make it a year of success and greater re-wards.

On 13 February, Waterberg held it's annual Valentine's ball. For many, it meant that their teenage dream came true. Starting new flames and then also keeping the old flames burning.

With Thapelo and Cynthia dancing the night away. Kgaogelo and Katlego only had eyes for each other.

If you weren’t there, we wonder where you were. The ball was off the charts with smooth sounds from the likes of Tamia, Lio-nel Richie, Luther Vandross, New Kids on the

The Mr and Mrs Valentine were the cherry on top. The contestants included Tshepo Mokoena bringing the night to life, not forgetting Phetole Mogale who made his mark as a force to be reckoned with. Nkgo-diseng Morakalla proved he was a gentle-man. Keletso Kgangago was the second prin-cess. Princess Kekana was the first princess, while Valencia Shikoana was at the top of her game.

To add the final touch to the night; Kevin Mol with the bubbly Adelaide Mokgawa were crowned Mr and Mrs Valentine.

Life is all about celebrating, courage for the human spirit over the harshest of obstacles.

There is power that resides in all of us to overcome the most difficult circumstances, be it failure, rejection or loneliness. It is im-portant to have a passionate intensity that reaches out to touch the heart and mind.

It takes much more than the courage to get through in life, it takes perseverance, open-mindness and a lot more.

If ever a road seems unpromising, then we should learn, without embarrassment, to change that unplantable road and take the next one. Be self-propelled; fuelled from within.

LEPHALALE - The Agapé church had a rare opportunity last Sunday to listen to the amazing encounters with Amazon Indian tribes as told by Arnold van der Spuy. Arnold is a missionary who works in some of the remote areas of the world. In 1993 he started working with Brazilian Amazon Indians in cooperation with YWAM and Wycliffe Bible Translators. A musician, Arnold would often take out his guitar when encountering a tribe for the first time. He says that he is amazed at their reaction to the music and to see-ing a man wearing clothes! What is interesting is that the tribal people believe that man used to walk with God, but that man did something wrong and was separated from God. They speak about a flood that wiped out everything and that they all come from the handful of people who survived. They believe that it is impossible to connect with God, but when they hear that God became flesh and walked on the earth they become excited, until you tell them that man killed God. That is when they jump up with their spears and you have to quickly explain that Jesus rose from the dead. “When they accept this truth, a miraculous thing happens.  You see the death in their eyes change into life,” explains Arnold.

UFishing with Christie

By Christie Thomas

I would warrant a guess and say that most of us experienced our first taste of bass fishing from the edge of a farm pond?

To catch a bass from the side of a little pond can be just as thrilling as catching it off the deck of a bass boat. My motto in life is that one does not need to be a bass snob to enjoy the simple pleasure of catching a bass. Be it from the side of the dam, a little farm pond, or a top-of-the-range bass boat, a bass is a bass and that tug on the end of the line is always enough to get my heart pumping double time.

Pond fishing is actually really simple, as long as you keep a few basic guidelines in mind.

Most importantly, whether fishing on a huge lake or miniscule pond, you need to lo-cate fish. The difference between looking for bass in a pond compared to a huge lake is the amount of water you are faced with, and this is what makes pond fishing such fun. It does not take long to figure out a pond, and before you know it you are catching bass.

Scan the PerimeterIn most cases, one quick scan around

the edge of the pond will give you a good idea of the structure and cover of said pond.

What feeds the pond? Is there a stream, culvert or ditch running into the pond?

Fresh running water and current in-creases oxygen levels, which in turn attract baitfish and other aquatic life on which bass feed.

What kind of shoreline vegetation do you see? Water lilies grow relatively shallow in soft, silty bottoms.

The outer edge of the lily line could indi-cate a drop to deeper water. Standing reeds growing along the edge provide ideal cover for a bass. Emergent reeds that form a point into the water usually grow out along a shal-low submerged point. There could be deeper water on either side of the point.

Is there any kind of wood cover? Stumps, trees, brush, logs or jetty? Fish

magnets. Are there any trees that cast shadows out

over the water? Cover for ambush.

Check the WaterIs the water clean or dirty? Water clarity

may determine the type of lure you select.Do some spots feel cooler or warmer to

the touch?

Depending on the season, warm or cold water may make the difference whether you are catching fish or not.

Is there a difference in water colour within the pond? Bass may use the cover of a mud-line to ambush prey swimming by in the clearer water.
