    Tanja N. Zhelnina is an academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences. She works at The Kon-

    stantin E. Tsiolkovsky State Museum of the History of Cosmonautics in Kaluga (Russian Fed-

    eration), where she mostly deals with researching the work of Tsiolkovsky and preserving his

    legacy. Among other things, she cooperated with the German space technology pioneer Her-

    mann Oberth. She is also a leading curator of the history of astronautics in the Hermann Oberth

    Space Travel Museum in Feucht (Federal Republic of Germany). In her research of the history

    of cosmonautics she studied Herman Potonik Noordung and his inuence on German and Rus-

    sian science and technology community in the 1930s.

    At the time of the NASA translation, J.D. Hunley was a historian working in the NASA History

    Ofce. He received a Masters Degree from Harvard University in 1968 and a Ph.D. from the

    University of Virginia in 1973, both in European history. He sub sequently became the rst Chief

    Historian of the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center, from which he retired in 2001 to accept

    the Ramsey Fellowship at the National Air and Space Museum. He subsequently wrote three

    award-winning books on rocketry, rocket propulsion, and space-launch vehicle technology, pub-

    lished by Texas A&M University Press and the University Press of Florida. He has also written or

    edited numerous books and articles about European and aerospace history.

    Frederick I. Ordway III was born and brought up in New York City and attended Trinity and

    other schools. He graduated from Harvard University in 1949 specializing on the geosciences,

    chemistry and astronomy. Subsequently, he spent two years at the University of Paris continuing

    Roger D. Launius is senior curator in the Division of Space History at the Smithsonian Institu-

    tions National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., where he was division chair 2003-

    2007. Between 1990 and 2002 he served as chief historian of the National Aeronautics and Space

    Administration. A graduate of Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, he received his Ph.D. from

    Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, in 1982. He has written or edited more than twenty

    books on aerospace history, most recently the Smithsonian Atlas of Space Exploration (Harp-

    erCollins, 2009); and including Space Stations: Base Camps to the Stars (Smithsonian Books,

    2003; 2nd edition, Konecky & Konecky, 2009), which received the AIAAs history manuscript

    prize. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Interna -

    tional Academy of Astronautics, and the American Astronautical Society, and associate fellow

    of the AIAA. He also served as a consultant to the Columbia Accident Investigation Board in

    2003 and presented the prestigious Harmon Memorial Lecture on the history of national secu-

    rity space policy at the United States Air Force Academy in 2006. He is frequently consulted by

    the electronic and print media for his views on space issues and has been a guest commentator

    on National Public Radio and all the major television network news programs.
