    . SRIVAISHNAVISM

    FROM THE DESK OF

    || ThiruveLLakkuLam ||

One of the 108 divya desams in ChOLa dEsam is known as ANNan Koil or ThiruveLLakkuLam . The presiding Lord's name here is SrinivAsan and the KshEthram is also known as Thenn Thiruppatthi just as ThiruviNNagar is known as DakshiNa Thiruppathi. The name of the Lord's consort is "PoovAr ThirumahaL" or the Lady who sits on the beautiful lotus flower.

Kaliyan"s SaraNAgathi to MahA Lakshmi **************************************

Thirumangai AzhwAr visualized the consort of the Lord here on the Lord's chest and saluted Her in the spirit of Sri Sooktha r*k and performed saraNAgathi to the Lord through Her :

Padhma priyE Padmini Padma hasthE PadmAlayE Padma daLAyadhAkshi visva priyE VishNu manOnukulE tvath paada padmam mayi sannidhathsva

  • 7

(Extended Meaning): Oh MahA Lakshmi , who is very fond of the lotus flower! Oh supreme One holding that lotus flower in Your hands ! Oh Mother seated on a golden lotus ! Oh the most beautiful One with the eyes resembling that of the enchanting petals of a tender lotus ! Oh parama KaaruNya mUrthy filled with dayA for one and all ! Oh auspicious Lady , who is tuned closely to the wishes of Your Lord ! Please place Your auspicious lotus feet on my siras !

After performing SaraNAgathi to Her , Thirumangai received Her anugraham and then approached the Lord of this divya dEsam and addressed Him movingly as "ANNA " and begged Him to remove all the obstacles that obstructed him unitl then to seek and gain the parama purushArtham of Moksham .

The special significance of this Divya dEsam ******************************************

Thirumangai mannan had a special attachment to this divya dEsam. His wife Kumudhavalli NaacchiyAr was "born" here; She was instrumental in Thirumangai becoming a parama VaishNavan .In view of the vow he had taken to perform tadhiyArAdahnam for 1,000 Sri VaishNavAs every day (as his wedding vow) for one year ,Kaliyan had to resort to day light robbery to raise funds for sustaining this kaimkaryam dear to his wife's heart .

On a river bed near here , Kaliyan stalked the Divya Dampathis (vEdu PaRi), who came to redeem him and tried to rob them of their divyAbharaNams . Our Lord , who arrived there to test and then bless Kaliyan was pleased with the intensity of His bhakthan and initiated him personally into His mUla manthram and thereby sent Kaliyan into raptures . The most grateful Kaliyan eulogized the Lord of Sri Devi presiding at this divya dEsam in remembrance through ten magnificient paasurams to record his gratitude over the Lord's dayA . Location of this divya dEsam and the Lord's sEvai here ***************************************************

This kshEthram is half mile from Thiru DevanAr thokai , seven mile south east of KaazhicchIrAma ViNNagaram and seven miles due east of VaitthIsvaran Koil . It has one of the most beautiful PushkaraNis. Once upon a time , the flood waters (VeLLam ) subsided and left behind a body of water that took the permanent form of a sacred pushkaraNi leading to the name of Thiru VeLLakkuLam " to this divya dEsam. On the banks of this pushkaraNi , the Lord of this divya desam stands with the lotus lady on His Vaksha sthalam as SrinivAsan ( PoovAr ThirumahaL pulliya Maarbhan ). He stands under the shade of TattvOdhaka VimAnam and blesses SvEtha Raajan , Sri Rudhran , Kaliyan and us .

The Echoes of Thirumalai and ThiruviNnagar Paasurams here *********************************************************

The saraNAgathi vaakyams used by Kaliyan at Thirumalai and ThiruviNNagar are echoed in the ten paasurams of ThiruveLLakkuLam . Here are three instances:

The intense mood of the AzhwAr is very much the same at the three divya dEsams presided over by Lord SrinivAsan. Identical words flow out of Kaliyan's lips at these three divya dEsams having Lord SrinivAsan as their presiding deity.

Progression of the Pilgrimage of Kaliyan *************************************

ThiruveLLakkuLam is one of the twelve ThirunAngUr divya dEsams. Kaliyan salutes the Lords of these twelve KshEthrams close to his birthplace in the following sequence and performs mangaLAsAsanam for them in his Periya Thirumozhi(PTM ) :

    1.ThiruvAli-Thirunagari: PTM-3.5,3.6 and 3.7 patthus

    2.ThirunAngUr MaNimADakkOil: PTM-3.8

    11.THIRUVELLAKKULAM: PTM-4.7

    12.ThiruppArthan PaLLi: PTM-4.7

ParakAlan starts his mangalAsAsanam at ThiruvAli Thirunagari, which is very close to his avathAra sthalam and concludes the salutations at ThiruppArthan PaLLI. In this series of twelve ThirunAngUr Thiruppathis, ThiruveLLakkuLam takes the 11th place. The Lords of the divya desams come together on the akshya thrithIyai day (?) on Garuda Vaahanam and bless their dearest Bhakthan in grateful appreciation .That Twelve Garuda sEvais in one location is a blessed sight indeed to see .

We will continue with Kaliyan's salutations to the EmperumAn of ThiruveLLakkuLam . In his first paasuram , Kaliyan begs Lord SrinivAsan of this divya dEsam to banish all his samsAric sorrows and free him from all his anxieties and fears .

Comments on the First Paasuram *******************************

Thirumangai's paasuram requesting the powerful Lord's intervention reminds us of the Yajur Veda manthram :

visvA rUpANi prathi munjathE kavi: prAsAveedh BHADHRAM dvipadhE chathushpathE vi nAkamakhyath savithA varENyOnu prayANamushasO virAjathi --Yajur Vedam:XII-3

(Meaning): " God is adorable , Omniscient maker of the Universe , worthy of adulation at dawn; He shapes all of the material objects seen in this universe. He blesses the quadrepeds and bipeds and REMOVES ALL OF THEIR DISTRESSES AND ANXIETIES ".

He removes all the samsaaric afflictions and confers lasting aanandham through the boon of Brahma Jn~Anam to those who surrender unto Him. Without partiality , He blesses the two-footed and the four-footed beings and pervades the universe that He created as Sarva VyApi, VishNu. It is this parabrahmam that the above Yajur Veda manthram saluted .It is this Bhadra NaarAyaNan that Vedam saluted with the words : "prasAveedh BHADHRAM ".

AzhwAr's paasuram is as follows: KaNNAr kadal pOl ThirumEni kariyAi naNNAr munai venRi koLvAr mannu NaangUr

  • 10

thiNNAr mathiL soozh ThiruveLLakkuLatthuL aNNA , adiyEn idaraik kaLayAyE --PTM:4.7.1

In the first line of the above paasuram , Kaliyan compares the Bhagavath svarUpam as the deep and expansive one , like the dark, deep ocean ( kaNNAr kadal pOl thirumEni KariyAi) . "KaNN aar kadal" refers to the bluish-black ocean that stretches as far as One's eyes could see and is filled with mysterious, soothing beauty . Kaliyan hints that the Lord's hue is reminding him of that dark blue hue of the deep ocean. Just as we enjoy the mystery and the beauty of the blue ocean without winking , Kaliyan says that he was intensely engaged in enjoying the extraordinary soundharyam of the Lord of ThiruveLLakkuLam .

The next line of the Paasuram is: " NaNNAr munai venRi koLvAr mannu NaangUr ". Here , Kaliyan celebrates the greatness of the citizens of this divya dEsam. "NaNNAr" means enemies. There are two kinds of enemies for us. One is the external one and the other is the internal one ( BhAhyam and Aandhram ).The external VirOdhi (enemy) , has to be won over with the help of weapons like sword and spear . The internal one has the limbs of arrogance, jealousy , anger et al. This aandhra enemy has to be won by Bhagavadh DhyAnam , Moola manthra-Dhvaya Japam and SaraNAgathi at the Lord's sacred feet . Kaliyan was familiar with the ways of a Kshathriyan prior to his transformation as a Sri VaishNavan through the Lord's intervention . As a result , Kaliyan was conversant with the battle plans for winning both the BhAhya and Aandhra chathrUs . As the proverb goes , only the serpent can know of the other serpent's "legs ". Kaliyan was thus able to recognize that ThiruveLLakuLam was filled with the citizen-BhagavathAs , who have won over both the kinds of fights by defeating soundly the Aandhra and BhAhya ChathrUs .

In the third line of this first paasuram , Kaliyan refers to the strength of the ramparts that protect the Lord's temple and addresses the Lord of this divya dEsam as the one surrounded by mighty walls (mathiLs); his paasura vaakhyams are : " TiNNAr mathiL soozh ThiruveLLakkulatthuL aNNA ". The strength of the protector is hinted by the reference to the strength of the ramparts surrounding His temple. The word aNNA stands for the strong brother or father figure , who rushes to the rescue of the young/weak one in the family , who is frightened . Kaliyan addresses endearingly the towering Father figure , Lord SrinivAsan at ThiruveLLakkuLam as "aNNA ". With Kaliyan's usage of the word , aNNA , the divya dEsam came to be known as aNNan kOil .

In the final line of the paasuram , Kaliyan appeals movingly to his aNNan to come to his rescue to drive away all of his fears and sorrows (aNNA, adiyEn idar kaLayAyE ). Kaliyan says: " Oh my sarva Swami ! Oh Lord of the hue of the deep , dark ocean ! Oh Lord , who lives in the kshEthram populated by parama bhaagavathAs ! I am losing my foothold in this ocean of samsAram and am being tossed about violently by its gigantic waves . I am overpowered by the ceaseless waves of the ocean of samsAram and at any moment , I am going to drown. Please give me Your powerful hand and lift me out of my miseries and place me in the cool shade of Your sacred feet ".

Kaliyan recognizes here that the fruit of SaraNAgathi at the most powerful Lord's feet is Moksham and therefore asks for the removal of all anisams (inauspiciousness and obstacles) that stand in the way of his Moksham .

    Gita The Wisdom of Krishna

Practical Guide to Right and Happy Living:

In Twenty - Seven Self-contained Essays:

Thotalam Chellaswami, Trustee, Srinivasa Gita Satsangh Trust

(Retir20. The Law of Least Effort:

Rted Senior I. E. S. Officer Govt. of India and Senior Advisor UN

    (ILO):

    17. The Way of Life of an Integrated Yogin: Self Mastery and Control of the Mind: Subdued Mind of a Self illumined Yogi: Supreme Bliss of a Self Illumined Yogin:

Unless the mind becomes steady there cannot be yoga. It is the wind of wordiness that always disturbs the mind, which may be likened to a candle flame. If that flame does not move at all, then one is said to have attained yoga. Sri Ramakrishna:

Krishna goes on to describe the hall marks of a self illumined integrated yogin his way of life. When the citta (feeling - past memories) is absolutely controlled and calmly established in the self (yadaa viniyatam cittam avatishthate aatmani eva), the yogi, thus devoid of attachment to all desires (nihsprihah sarva kaamebhyah), is spoken of as yoga-united (tadaa yuktah iti ucyate). The subdued mind of such a one who practises Yoga (as outlined above) yoginah yatacittasya yun`jatah yogam aatmanah, is like a lamp in a windless place, which flickers not yathaa deepah nivaatasthah nen`gate. [6.18, 19]: [A truly Krishna conscious person always absorbed in constant undisrupted meditation on Krishna, is as steady as a lamp in a windless place. The wind which makes the flame flicker is extraneous. So for steadiness what is required is only the elimination of what is extraneous to the situation. In (6.18) Krishna is pointing out that the yogin should be fully Concentrated in enjoying the blessed perception of the soul divine, uninfluenced by material longings, which is confirmed in (6.19) by emphasizing that the yogin who is agitated by material desires does not reveal within him the clear presence of the Divine. ]:

    1. Krishna goes on to describe the result obtained by one who is temperate in his habits. The yogi well settled on account of discerning unsurpassable good in the self alone and rests there alone steadily, without movement, then being free of yearning for all desires, he is said to be integrated (yuktah). He is said to be fit for yoga. Desirelessness makes the mind

  • 18

constant and pure. Fixed in yoga is that mind which is impregnable against all desires. It rejoices exclusively in the self. The pure self of a yogi shines in its original splendor when it is free from egoism (selfish desires and attachment). The perfection of Yoga means keeping the mind in a state of equilibrium. It is only through transcendental meditation that the mind can be kept in a state of equilibrium. When ones mental activities are thus stabilized, one is said to have attained Yoga. The Yogi realises that when the mind is reduced to its real nature or consciousness, then absolute peace automatically follows. In the flame that flickers there are two elements the flame itself and the extraneous factor, the wind. In a windless place, where there is no extraneous factor causing the flickering, the flame just burns on steadily. The Yogi being completely sheltered from the winds of desire (the external factor), the self in him shines in its original splendour. Establishment in unity is a similar state. It requires only the removal of the extraneous factor (the wanderings of the stubborn and turbulent mind). So perfection in Yoga is unitiveness in the self, of the self and by the self. The wind is the mind; the flame is the self; its light is intelligence; the absence of flickering is the mind, which is motionless or refrains from moving towards outside objects and focusing all thoughts on the self alone. The idea is that a Yogi attains such a state when thought ceases - stopped by meditation. When thought ceases, buddhi takes over, leading him beyond the influence of the senses, to his original ground from which he slips not. The mind of such an aatma-samyama Yogi (integrated Yogi) is disciplined and controlled and ever united with the aatman. Because of this he is able to see the self by the pure mind and to relish and rejoice in the bliss of the self. This, then, is the perfection of Yogi devoid of all material desires. If all our desires are for Krishna, there is no scope for material desires. 2. The state described here is on the level where the path of saamkhya and karma yoga meet to find fulfillment in a common goal, as explained in chapter 5. yuktah united in verse (6.8) is used to denote the evenness of mind; here (6.18,19), as in (6.14), it is used in a much wider sense in terms of the whole being, comprising the entire field of the mind, its silence, its desires and activities the whole field of life that lies between the two extremes of bondage and eternal freedom, between the individual person and the cosmic divine, denoting as it does inclusion of the relative and the Absolute. 3. The state of Divine Union or Yoga, is defined in its different aspects in the following 4 verses, and then in verses (6.27 31) explains the essence of the path from self consciousness to God consciousness, in which the yogi achieves the pinnacle of glory (6.32).

That state in which the mind controlled by the practice of concentration gets settled - yatra cittam uparamate niruddham yoga sevayaa, in which seeing the self alone by the (purified) mind, one satisfied with the self - ca yatra eva pasyan aatmaanam aatmanaa aatmani tushyanti. [6.20]: [The intellect has to surrender its existence in order to find its place in the eternal being of the Self. In this state the mind is saattvic untainted by raajasic and taamasic tendencies. It has the experience of pure spirit. Verse (6.20) is the start of a long sentence culminating in verse 23. The four verses (6.20 23) present the essence of Gitas yoga, the state of divine union, in its complete glory.]: The state in which one realizes same absolute, transcendent bliss sukham aatyantikam yat tat, which is experienced through the intellect and which transcends the senses buddhigraahyam ateedriyam, and wherein established one does not waver from the Truth or Reality vetti yatra na ca eva ayam sthitah calati tattvatah. - [6.21]: [unwavering: in that state of transcendental consciousness there is no possibility of activity, but continued practice of transcending the field of relativity cultures the mind so that it remains established in bliss, unwavering even in the field activity. This state of non wavering is substantiated in the verse to follow.]: Attaining which one thinks of no other acquisition as greater than that - yamlabdhvaa caaparam laabham manyate na adhikam tatah, and established in which one is not perturbed even by great pain - yasmin sthito na duhkhena gurunaa api vicaalyate. [6.22]: [This verse indicates how even those phases of life in extreme contrast to divinity are intimately embraced by this blessed state of divine union. This point is developed in the verse to follow.]: Know that to be the blessed state of Yoga which is the "disconnection of attachment to sorrow

duhkha samyoga viyogam. It is this Yoga one should practise with a serene mind and firm determination (undisturbed by depressions of heart) sah yogah niscayena yoktavyah nirvinnacetasaa. [6.23]: [Note the third definition of karma yoga in (6.23). This has been discussed in an earlier essay 4. The word pain includes the pleasure derived from contact with sense objects, since it is not only mixed with pain, but end ultimately in sorrow and disappointment. Definition of yoga (2.48) samatvam yogah ucyate and (6.23) above both are one and the same in the generalized sense. Krishna is emphasizing that the mind entangled in the pleasures of sense-life gives up such pleasures once it tastes the bliss of self-realization the crown and glory of contented life of a yogin. As Sridharswami observed: Lukewarmness in practice (of this yoga) due to difficulties is depression. The verses (6.20 23) form four pillars of the edifice of yoga. They stand to remind persons of every generation that it is not necessary to suffer in life, that lifes goal is easy of attainment and that all aspirations are easy to fulfill. The way is by the inward march of the mind, by quietly locating the hidden universal Being, a ray of whose eternal light is sufficient to dispel all the darkness of ignorance and shower down the blessings of Almighty Deity. These verses, in giving the definition of yoga, provide a royal road to the fulfillment at every level of human life. Fortunate are those who take this highway, who practice transcendental meditation. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi:]: [we are not to miss to note that the joy referred to in (6.21) is characterized as eternal (aatyantikam), supersensuous (ateendriyam) and apprehended only through subtle and purified intellect (buddhigraahyam), in order to distinguish it from even the saattvika happiness.]:

    4. What is meant by the expression aatmanaa aatmani pasyan aatmanam seeing self by the self in the self? It means glimpsing the deepest Self of ones own self seeing the Deity abiding in the self. This does not mean that the self can claim that it is the Deity. But it does mean that God, though ever a mystery, can be experienced deep within oneself. In other words what is meant by this observation is that functional and qualitative similitude (saadharmyam), with the Deity. And it is this type of identification that is affirmed when Krishna first says that the supreme bliss comes to the yogi who has become one with the Real (brahman) and immediately repeats that the yogi who ever integrates himself with the self (aatman) enjoys the ultimate bliss of brahma samsparsam, contact or touch with the Real (6.27, 28) to be discussed in some detail. Since He is indweller of all selves, He is not the exclusive indweller of any particular self. The supreme Godhead can be experienced deep within oneself. The supreme bliss described in (6.21) is far superior even to saatvic happiness and transcends it (2.55), because this bliss is independent of all contact of the senses with their objects and which is experienced through intellect alone that has taken the form of the self and therefore established in which one does not waver from the truth, from the reality of the self. (Sridhar Swami): 5. Self-knowledge and self-satisfaction are intimately related. Self-knowledge restores the quietude of the mind, which leads to supreme satisfaction (satisfaction in the self through the joy of the self - 2.55). Quietude of the mind and self-contentment are simultaneously attained. If we do our duties in the yajna spirit as worship of God and in full awareness of the true nature of the self, we are in tune with the Deity. This bliss is ever lasting because it is the bliss of the eternal self which itself is of the nature of bliss. The yogi does not want to divert himself from this bliss to the impermanent pleasures of the senses once he experiences that bliss. The yogi established in the bliss of the self has no body consciousness. The body hangs on him just as a shadow hangs on to a body. So also any harm inflicted on the body does not affect the yogi established in the self.

TIRUNANDIPURA VINNAGARAM ( Dhakshina Jagannatham )

This Divya kshetram is located in Nandipura Vinnagaram, close to Korukkai

near Kumbakonam. This place is also called Dakshina Jagannatham.

The moolavar is Jagannathan or Vinnagaraperumal in a seated posture, and the

Thayar is Shenbagavalli. The Theertham is Nanditheertha pushkarini and the

    Vimanam Mandaara Vimanam.

  • 21

According to the sthala purana Nandi performed penance at this place to seek

atonement for the fault of insulting the Dwarapalakas at Vaikuntam, and had the

Darsan of Lord Vishnu. Tirumangai Azhwar calls it as Nandi panisaida naga.

It is also believed that the moolavar was originally facing east and turned to

west to see Sibi Chakravarthi sacrificing his life to save the life of a pigeon.

    TIRUVELLIYANKUDI

This Divya kshetram is located 20 Kms from Kumbakonam enroute to

Aaduthurai. This place is also called Bhargavapuram.

The moolavar Kolavilli Raman is in a reclining posture, called Bhujanga

sayanam and the Thayar is Maragathavalli. The theertham is Sukra, Brahma,

Parasurama and Indra Theertham and the Vimanam is Pushkala Varthaga

Vimanam. The sthala vriksham is Kadhali (Vazhai).

As Lord Sukran (Venus) performed penance at this shetram it is called

Velliankudi. It is believed that Sukran, Brahma, Indra, Parasarar, Markandeyan,

Mayan and Bhoomi Devi have worshipped Lord Vishnu at this place. It is

considered that visiting this shetram is equivalent to visiting all of the 108

    Divya shetrams.

Legend also has it that Mayan meditated to Lord Vishnu and the Lord appeared

with the conch and discus. He then requested the Lord to appear in the form of

Rama. Thereon the Lord handed over His discus and conch to Garudan and took

the form of Rama with the bow and arrow. Thus this place obtained the name

Kolavilli Raman and one finds the vigraha of Garudazhwar with discus and

    conch.

Bhoktha , Sahishnu In Sri Venkatesa Suprabatham, Sri Venkatesa Sthothram slokas 9 and 11 conveys the significance of Namas. 9th sloka is Vina venkatesam na natho na natha/ Sadha venkatesam smarami smarami// Hare Venkatesam praseedha praseedha / Priyam venkatesa prayascha prayascha// This means as "Oh Sri venkatesa Even in my dreams myself does not consider any God is superior to you. So Myself is meditating on you and you alone always. . Oh Hari please grant me the boon of what myself desires or even better still. Please bless me with all auspiciousness which you consider most suitable for me. Again in 11th sloka Agnanina maya doshan aseshan vihithan hare/. Kshamasva thvam kshamasvathvam seshasaila sighamane //This means as "Oh Hari Sriman Narayana ' the crest jewel of sesha sailam , Kindly forgive me for all sins committed by me in ignorance, and innocence. If you do not oblige me in this for the trespasses done , I have to take into consideration as your Nama has no meaning. Also, any of my visits to Thirumalai with your blessings have also become purposeless. Therefore Oh SriVenkatesa, kindly forgive my misdeeds and bless this soul. Thus it is observed there are lot of significance in uttering namas of Sriman Narayana in any form. In this manner, Sri Vishnu

Sahasranamam being discussed as Dharma Sthothram has so far completed 142 namas. In 143 rd nama , Bhokta, it means as the enjoyer, the experiencer, and the

consumer of nature. He feels happy about the offerings of devotees done with

pure Bhakthi. In Gita 13.22, Sri Krishna tells as "The spirit dwelling in this

body , is really the same as the supreme. He has been spoken of as the witness,

the true guide, the sustainer of all , the experiencer as the embodied soul the

overload and the absolute as well". . Lord Brahma describing the glory of Rama

says in Valmiki Ramayanam as Bhavan narayanao deva as " You are Srimasn

Narayana. , the lord of Lakshmi, Prabhu, holding discus in the hand. You are

the vanquisher of the past and the future foes and Lord Varaha holding one

single tusk. You are the imperishable Brahma the very truth present in the

beginning, middle and the end, you are four armed Sri Maha Vishnu the greatest

Dharma of all spheres. You are the unconquered , you are the purusha and

Purushothama , you are Hrishikesa, the lord of senses holding saranga , bow and

dagger , you are mightiest Vishnu, Sriman Narayana. He is the scorcher of the

foes, is unmanifest , the heart of all Gods and supreme secret also. There are

limitless merits to describe the glory for years together by many learned

scholars, but is endless process due innumerable ideal qualities of HIm. .

In 144th nama Sahishnuh , it means the forgiver, He who can pardon. He is one

who has capacity of forgiving the innumerable sins of people when they become

well disposed towards Him. He forgives even Rakshasas like Hiranya. ,

Thirumangai Azhwar says as He has committed enormous sins that will push

him into the hell automatically (Nanavitha naragam pugum pavam seithen) , he

has killed many without any purpose as a king and as an army general, he has

never helped those who come to him for alms, he has not even uttered anything

sweet to them, and he has not even pointed out any person to help them, like

Andal's Tiruppavai lines of Aiyamum pichaiyum anthanaiyum kai kaatti , he has

taken many births and deaths but not done anything worthwhile(Nallathor aram

seithum ilen ) , he has not surrendered before Him ever and continued to

commit lots of sins only.He just prostrated completely at the lotus feet of

Sriman Narayana to forgive all his bad qualities and bless him. With all that

Sriman Narayana asked Azhwar to come near Him and whispered in his right

ear Ashtakshara Manthram. Thirumangai Mannan hearing this right from

Sriyapathi Sriman Narayana Himself, he felt purification of body, mind, and

heart , and free from all impurities . All these shows Forgiving nature of Sriman

narayana. It is seen the meaning for Sahishnu in sanskrit is both conqueror and

    forgiver.

    SRIMADH BHAAGAVATHAM.

When Krishna pulled Kuchelas upper garment, he saw riceflakes in that.

He said, Dear friend, you have brought my favourite.

Then immediately had one hand full of riceflakes.

When Krishna decided to have the next one Rukmini, stopped that.

Her eyes informed Krishna that that your one handful itself

gave all the wealth I had to Kuchela. If you eat another where

shell I go to give the wealth to him ?. I have no other alternative

to go his house and work as servent maid .

Then one full day Krishna kept Kuchela with him in his palace.

He gave all the honours to him. Kuchela was have no word to

praise Krishna. Then next day morning, to took leave from

Krishna and returned to his place.

On his way he was thinking , The great king, Lakshmipati,

hugged me. Lakshmi gave all respects to me. This is enough.

Whatelse I want in my life. No wealth will be equal to these. He

knows that if He gives wealth to me I may get changed. That is

why he was not willing to give me anything.

Like this he was thinking and reached his house.

What had happened We will see next week.

When an object is in one place and not in another for example a pot is in

Here the Lord makes a solemn promise to all his devotees that whosoever worships him alone thinking of none else and ever united, he himself attends to their wants and needs and provides them with security of what they possess. Here the Lord is asking us to surrender ourselves whole heartedly to him, then only he will take full charge of our lives and see to our wellbeing. Now the question comes, how do we surrender ourselves? We have to surrender our ego, we have to surrender to his will, we have to educate ourselves that "Apart from Emperumaan Sriman Narayana no body is our Saviour "whatever the Lord has done or will do for us in the past, present or future would be for our best. Draupadi was very proud of her five husbands, especially Arjuna, when she was forced into the Royal Darbar and was being insulted by the Kauravas, she surrendered to Lord Krishna only at the last moment when she realized that her husbands were helpless her ego was absolutely crushed and that is when the Lord came to her rescue and protected her dignity.

l)Sage Naradha once saw a big tortoise in River Ganga & astonishingly praised it for its giganitic size, the tortoise replied "they are many turtles like me in this Ganga, so this River is much appreciable". Naradha started praising Ganga, she replied, "the Ocean is much greater than me as many rivers like me associate with it". Naradha now praised the Ocean, the Ocean replied, "Even though I am a big ocean, I can be crossed by a ship, But the Earth has so many creatures, wild life within, so It is the earth which is more appreciable than me". Naradha started singing the praise of the Earth. The Earth replied "If there are no Parvathas (Mountains), then there is no rain, then there is no green life, all the creatures would suffer without water, so it is the Mountains which are praise worthy". Now the sage diverted his attention, to the Mountains, which replied "Lord Bramha is our creator, he is praise worthy not us. Naradha worshipped Lord Bramha who replied "Dear son, it is the Vedhas which are definitely superior than me". Vedhas were worshipped by Naradha, in turn they answered, "Yagas are in fact much superior to us, if yagas are not performed, we will become futile,so please worship yagas". Sage Naradha prayed to the "Yaaga Agni". it responded "Naradha, Lord Sriman Narayana gives the benefits for the aahuthi homams which are done through us, he is the greatest of all, he is the greatest guru, there is nothing apart from him, He is the first one to be worshiped and prayed upon". Now Sage Naradha realised, 1)The Tortoise 2)The Ganga 3)The Ocean 4)The Earth 5)The Mountain 6)The Bramha 7)The Vedas 8)The Yaga Agni 9)The benefit (which is bestowed upon the performance of Yaga)

Everything is Sri Hari, this incident Perialwar refers in his thirumozhi "Aamaiyay, Gangayay, Aazhkadalai................: (4-10-2) in praise of Lord of Sri Rangam. Thus there is nothing apart from "Sri Hari! Sri Hari !Sri Hari !"

    DO YOU KNOW ?

    30. How To Prevent High Blood Pressure

Blood pressure is the force of the blood pushing the walls of the arteries that carry blood

from the heart to all body tissues and organs. Each time the heart beats (about 60-70

times a minute at rest); it pumps out blood into the arteries creating some pressure.

Blood pressure is highest when the heart contracts and blood is pumped. This is called

systolic pressure. When the heart is at rest, in between beats, blood pressure persists,

but decreases. This is the diastolic pressure. These two figures, systolic and diastolic pressures, usually denote blood pressure.

Blood pressure is not constant throughout the day. It is lowest during the time when we

go to bed and increase as we get back to our work during day time. It may rise during

the time when we are excited, nervous or under pressure. In an adult individual the normal blood pressure have to be 120/80 mm of mercury.

Increase or decrease with this measurement of pressure can give invitation to large

number of problems. This disease if once gets entry into the body system it remains

there for lifetime. Hypertension or blood pressure is very common in elder persons.

Sometimes it can also be hereditary. Blood pressure is measured by an instrument called

sphygmomanometer which is like an inflatable rubber bag enclosed in a cotton cover connected with a mercury manometer on hand and rubber bulb on other to pump air.

Blood pressure (BP) is the pressure (force per unit area) exerted by circulating blood on

the walls of blood vessels. Nearly, 1/3rd of the world population suffers from blood

pressure. But among them maximum are unaware of their disease. People can

have high blood pressure for years, without ever having any symptoms of the same. If we are cautious about a few things, we can try to avoid blood pressure.

Always intake boiled vegetables. Try to remove spicy ingredients from your diet, and stick to fresh fruits and vegetables. Be careful about the usage of oil in your diet.

Try to use not more than 2-3 tablespoons of oil. Olive oil, mustard oil is preferable.

Reduce the content of salt in your food. Do not use more than 1 teaspoon of salt in your

daily diet. Do not intake too much of non-vegetarian food stuffs. You must however include chicken and fish, twice every week.

Strictly prohibit yourself from alcoholic drinks and cigarettes. Avoid coffee. Tea may be had twice a day .Use of tea-bags is more preferable.

Sulphur is essential for the health and development of our blood vessels and veins.

Sulphur rich food items like cabbage, berry, mustard, lettuce, onion, carrot must be included in your diet chart.

For proper absorption of oxygen, iron is indispensable. Cherry, leafy vegetables, water melon, apple are good sources of iron.

If the body is deprived of the right amount of silicon, it can prove hazardous. It can

cause mental turmoil, sleeplessness, which indirectly serves as a reason for high blood

pressure. Barley, onion and tomato are rich in silicon.

Compulsory exercises need to be undertaken. Morning walks, yoga, meditation can

bring in a lot of difference. Start with 10 minutes exercise and slowly try to increase it to 30 minutes.

People suffering from hypertension are advised to limit sodium intake. Sodium

occurs naturally in beets, spinach, celery, shrimps and oysters. However, table salt is the

major source of sodium in our diet, which pushes up the blood pressure level of hypertension patients to abnormally high levels.

In the absence of sodium chloride, the salty flavor of foods is retained with salt

substitutes. Besides enhancing the flavor of the foods, studies have shown that potassium present in these salt substitutes helps to lower the blood pressure level.

Increase potassium intake, reduce blood pressure level

Imbalance in sodium and potassium in our daily diet make us susceptible to high blood pressure. A diet high in sodium and low in potassium increases the risk of hypertension.

According to health experts, the risk of developing hypertension could be reduced significantly by limiting sodium intake and by increasing potassium consumption.

In a recent study reported in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine, researchers at

the Human Nutrition department at Wageningen University and Nutrition and Health

department at Unilever have found that the average potassium consumption in 21

countries including US, Germany, China, New Zealand and the Netherlands is between

1.7 grams and 3.7 grams per day. This is significantly lower than the recommended daily amount of 4.7 grams of potassium per day.

According to health experts, the systolic blood pressure level could fall by 1.7 to

3.2mm by taking the minimum recommended amount of potassium daily. The dip in the

blood pressure level by increasing potassium intake is equivalent to eliminating 3 grams

of table salt from the diet. To prevent hypertension, you should not consume more than 5 grams of sodium per day.

    Natural sources of potassium

By switching to potassium salts and by including potassium rich foods in the diet,

hypertension patients could lower their blood sugar level naturally. Potassium occurs

naturally in a large number of fruits and vegetables.

Potatoes, sweet potatoes, spinach, leafy greens, mushroom, banana, tomato, orange,

grapefruit, dry fruits, beans and peas are rich in potassium. Large amounts of potassium are found in dairy foods and fish.

    Side effects of excess potassium

However, a potassium rich diet is not recommended for people with kidney disorders.

My delusion is destroyed; I have regained my memory through Thy Grace (nashto mohah smritih labdhaa mayaa acyuta tvat prasaadaat). I am rightly established freed from doubt (sthitah asmi gata sandehah). I will act according to Thy bidding (karishye vacanam tava. [18.73]: [This verse marks the counterpart of (2.7), in which Arjuna surrendered himself to Krishna as His disciple, complaining that he had become confused and had lost memory of right and wrong. In verse (18.73) Arjuna acknowledges the teaching of Krishna.]:

    17. The wheel had come full circle. Arjuna, who threw away his bow and arrows overwhelmed by doubt and despair which in fact necessitated the long discourse from Krishna, became at the end of the discourse, serene, calm and collected and exclaimed. My delusion is destroyed; I have regained my memory through Thy Grace (nashto mohah smritih labdhaa mayaa acyuta tat prasaadaat). I am rightly established freed from doubt (sthitah asmi gata sandehah). I will act according to Thy bidding (karishye vacanam tava. [18.73]:

    18. The Significance of Gita Sermons Closing Verses (18.61 66):

The Gospel of Bhakti and Saranaagti - Prapatti:

[In this section we present the significance of verses (18. 61 66), emphasizing the importance of these verses as constituting quint - essence of the Sermon, the gospel of bhakti and saranaagati and the intimate relationship between the devotee and the Deity. In the attempt to present the section as self contained as possible, some necessary repetions of what have been stated earlier became, rather, inevitable. The author requests the readers to bear with the same.]:

18.1. First of all - we are not to miss the inter relatedness of the closing verses (18.61 66) of Krishna, discussed in the preceding sections. Apart from bringing out the intimate relationship between the devotee and the Deity, these verses provide the quint-essence of the teaching saara-saaram. Verse (18.61) brings out that it is the Deity abiding in the hearts of all of us that inspires our thought, word and deed, through the instrumentality of the three dispositions born of nature (prakritijaan gunaan) Vide (7.13). So it follows that if we are to get liberated from samsaara cycle we have to gain Divine grace as the Deity alone controls the gunas and the arduous task of transcending the gunas is possible only by His Grace. Vide daivee hi eshaa gunamayee mama maayaa duratyayaa, maam eva ye prapadyante maayaam etaam taranti te Verily this divine illusion of mine, made up of the gunas, is hard to surmount; But those who take refuge in Me alone, they transcend this illusion. (7.14): Vide also verse (14.26), discussed earlier. It is therefore no wonder that Krishna should immediately exhort all of us to seek refuge in Him alone with all our hearts (18.62) to gain supreme peace. The two verse (18.61, 62) form the basic foundation for the last and sacred word (paramam vacah) to follow - (18.65, 66). 18.2. It is imperative that this surrender exhorted upon all of us should be voluntary and self willed and should not be the result of force or commandment, even if it is from the Deity Himself. Then only the surrender can be sincere and hence effective So Krishna immediately adds Thus wisdom more profound than all profundities been declared to you by Me. Reflect upon it fully and act as you will or choose. (18.63): This exhortation coming immediately after the exhortation in (18.62) brings out that Krishna does not demand blind total surrender. He stands for the freedom of will and to act according to ones conscience. Krishna wants that Arjuna should take responsibility for his action and then only karma doctrine (in which the agency of the soul is clearly embedded) can rightly and justly be applied. Now the question arises how are we to view the freedom of will to act as one likes granted in (18.63), in the light of Krishnas observations in the carama slokas (18.65, 66) which looks more or less as commandment? This can be explained only by considering that all activities in the world are part of the cosmic administration of the Lord and as such we are only to act as instruments of the Deity in the light of the observation that our wills are ours only to make them His. The position will become clearer as we proceed in the discussion of the verses to follow. 18.3. Compassionate Krishna felt that His observation in (18.63) immediately following His exhortation to surrender to the indwelling Iswara (18.62), which was characterized as the most profound wisdom, is, perhaps, harsh. So He immediately adds. sarvaguhyatamam bhooyah srinu me paramam vacah, ishtah asi me dridhamiti tatah vakshyaami te hitam Listen again to My supreme word, the profoundest of all. You are beloved of Me and steadfast; therefore I shall tell what is for your good. (18.64): We are not to miss the importance of the simple looking expressions in (18.64) which emphasize, apart from

supreme compassion of Krishna to His beloved devotee Arjuna, the great importance of what Krishna is going to say Krishnas last word carama sloka considered as the Sermons Mahaavaakhya to follow - (18.65, 66): 18.4. There are two aspects that are worth consideration in regard to total surrender (prapatti). Firstly the basic principle in the doctrine of prapatti is that the total liberation depends entirely on Divine Grace and not on the efforts of the spiritual aspirant. Whereas there are limitations to human efforts, no such limitation exists for the Divine Grace. Secondly, it is often stated that saranaagati or prapatti (total surrender) is an independent and easier path and is not dependent on knowledge (jnaana) or devotion (bhakti), a view commonly held by many devotees and commentators. But this is not so, as supreme surrender is not so easy and some form of devotion should be the basis of prapatti. It is precisely because of this consideration that Krishna has placed (18.65), which emphasises bhakti before (18.66), which expounds prapatti (saranaagati). Moreover, Krishna considered both the verses (18.65, 66) as deserving of the high praise or status, which are characterised as - My supreme word (me paramam vacah) (18.64), the profoundest of all wisdom (jnaanam guhyaat guhyataram) (18.63) and most profound (sarvaguhyatamam) (18.64). It is precisely on these considerations that the author thought it proper to consider the twin slokas as constituting the carama sloka as against the commonly held view that sloka (18.66) alone as constituting the carama sloka. However, It may, perhaps, be added, in this context, that prapatti and parama bhakti do overlap each other. So supreme surrender, if sincerely practised is bound to lead to supreme devotion and like wise supreme devotion will certainly lead to supreme surrender. In this sense prapatti can be considered as an independent means to liberation. We shall now proceed to present the last word carama sloka of the Gita Sermon. (18.65, 66): 18.5. Carama Sloka: Give Me thy heart (surrender your inner sense to Me manmanaa bhava); be devoted to Me (become My devotee mad bhaktah bhava); do all work as my worship (let all thy works become articles of My worship madyaajee bhava); prostrate before Me with all reverence (surrender wholeheartedly giving up the individuality and egoless to Me - maam namaskuru); so shall thou come to Me (maam eva eshyasi); I promise thee in truth, for thou art dear to Me (satyam te pratijaane priyah asi me). [18.65]: [Vide - priyah hi jmaaninah atyarthm, aham sah ca mama priyah indeed, supremely dear am I to the wise and he is dear to Me 7.17: and also sah maam eti paandava he comes to Me, Oh Pandava. - 11.55]: [After thus prepared your self]: Lay aside all rites and writs (articles of faith and rules of observance all false sense of security and material holds) sarva dharmaan parityajya; come to Me alone as thy constant refuge (place of safety, where no trouble can reach) maam ekam saranam vraja. I shall free thee from every sin aham tvaa sarva paapebhyah mokshayishyaami; [(in fact he cannot sin as he does nothing and everything gets done by the Deity through the instrumentality of the devotee.]; grieve not maa sucah. (Rest assured you shall surely come to me - mama eva eshaysi. [18.66]: [Vide 18.65 and also 11.55]: 18.6. The subject of bhakti and surrender is a continuing theme of the Sermon and Krishna emphasizes that the Divine Grace is more powerful than any other spiritual discipline. In (10.11) Krishna declared: By My Grace I dispel the darkness born of ignorance by the shining lamp of wisdom. In (11.47) Krishna stated: By My Grace I have shown you this universal form. In (11.54) Krishna exhorts by unswerving devotion Arjuna can not only know Him but also be seen in reality and also enter into Him. In (18.56) Krishna, laying emphasis on His Grace declared: My devotee attains the eternal
