Welcome!Welcome to the first edition of Noritake News! Noritake dental ceramics are now very highly regarded in more than ninety countries for their outstanding reliability and aesthetic properties, something that is well appreciated in the UK. This has been achieved by a process of constant product refinement and support, meaning that Noritake products are only replaced when there is a direct benefit to the dental professional and patient. The purpose of this and future editions of Noritake News is to make you aware of these exciting new benefits and show how they can help to drive your business forward.

In the news section you will find a host of improvements to the Noritake EX3 range, allowing you to hold just one stock of ceramic materials for your NHS and private PFM work, an important consideration at this point in the economic cycle. Noritake CZR has also been updated to help improve aesthetics from the very core of your Zirconia restorations. There

is also the announcement of a Preferred Partner Agreement with Nobel Biocare which demonstrates both the importance of total quality and meeting the needs of the future.

Skillbond are excited that Mr Kito will return to the UK in May for a series of exclusive courses, his previous courses have been extremely well received and are sure to sell out fast. We have included one of Mr Kito’s many articles as a taster of what is to come… Skillbond are also excited to have an officially accredited Noritake training laboratory in the UK to enhance our local support.

You will also find a comparative study of Noritake CZR veneered Zirconia posterior crowns and conventional porcelain fused to metal restorations. The results are very impressive and are sure to provoke some interesting debate.

We hope that you enjoy the first edition of Noritake News and welcome your feedback and thoughts for future editions.

The higher the patient’s demand for aesthetics, the greater the increase in PFZ (Porcelain Fused to Zirconia) restorations. The die information and knowledge about the coping materials are important key factors in this process. Here is a case which outlines this process: Metal Core + Coloured Noritake Coping - KATANA KT13. The case shows the influence and importance of recognizing die colour:

Skillbond is pleased to announce AJ Rollings Dental Laboratory as the UK’s officially accredited Noritake training laboratory. In order to gain this status the laboratory has already hosted a number of courses with Noritake’s leading Japanese and Swiss instructors, whilst the laboratories partners Jacquelyn and Adrian Rollings have undergone rigorous training at Noritake’s headquarters in Nagoya, Japan. Jacquelyn commented ‘The trainers in Japan were meticulous in their attention to every detail, from the smallest nuance in the surface of the finished restorations down to the finely controlled crystal structure of the CZR layering ceramic. The culture was quite different from anything that I have experienced before and I can now understand why Japanese products are fabled for their outstanding reliability.’

Education is incredibly important at AJ Rollings; Adrian holds the Membership qualification of the City and Guilds of London Institute which has full equivalence to a British University Masters Degree and was further honoured by City and Guilds with a Medal for Excellence last year. He has also sought to broaden the scope of his qualifications and has recently completed an MBA at Birmingham City Business School. Adrian commented ‘If we are to thrive as a profession we must embrace education and make sure that our skills gain the formal recognition that they deserve. Laboratories have a good news story to tell and having materials such as Noritake really helps us; these ceramics are precision engineered for aesthetics and stability even after repeated firings.’

The purpose built laboratory and training centre is centrally situated in South Staffordshire just two miles from the M6 Toll motorway and in similarly close proximity to the A5 and A38 corridors.

Noritake Dental Supply Co., Limited today announced its sponsorship of a study that surveyed clinical performance of PFZ as compared to PFM. The results of this study will be presented at IADR 2010 Barcelona1 on July 16 by Markus B. Blatz, DMD, PhD. Gerard J. Chiche, DDS served as lead clinical consultant for the study.

The objective of the study, in collaboration with Cusp Dental Laboratory, a Boston-based dental laboratory involving over two thousand patient cases among 22 participating dentists (14 PROSTHODONTISTS; 8 GP) in Greater Boston and adjacent states(including New York and Maine) evaluated and compared the clinical success of single porcelain-fused-to-zirconia crowns (PFZ) and conventional porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) crowns on posterior teeth in private practice. Private practitioners were asked to review patient documentation and to provide information gained from visual inspection during routine recall appointments/hygiene checks or especially scheduled

recall appointments. Findings were indicated on a print survey sheet. A meeting was held with the 22 participating practitioners for calibration purposes.

A total of 2,635 premolar and molar crowns (1944 PFZ; 691 PFM) fabricated by one dental laboratory were followed over intervals ranging from 2 to 57 months by the respective private practitioners using a print survey. In the PFZ group, one veneering porcelain, CZR porcelain layered over zirconia cores (CZR, Noritake), was used in combination with three coping systems (Lava, 3M ESPE; Procera, Nobel Biocare; Katana, Noritake). In the PFM, one veneering porcelain, EX-3 porcelain layered over metal cores (EX-3, Noritake), with precious alloys (52% Au) was used. The private practitioners were asked to review their clinical results and indicate any post-cementation complications (i.e. porcelain chipping, fracture, loosening, etc.), all of which were considered failures. The Kaplan-Meier Survival Analysis was used for statistical analyses.

Results show that the mean survival time for posterior crowns was 52 months with a survival probability of 98.1% for PFZ crowns, 95.8% for PFM crowns, indicating no significant difference between the two modalities for the time interval studied (p=0.107). Survival probabilities of individual zirconia coping systems were 97.3% for Lava, 99.5% for Procera, and 99.7% for Katana, which were not significantly different from each other (p=0.072). For the 1107 molar and 837 premolar crowns surveyed, mean survival probabilities were not significantly different (p=0.586) with 97.5% for molar 98.9% for premolar crowns.

Conclusions: PFM restorations are the known standard of strength and reliability. However, this study concludes that within the time interval studied, survival times andsurvival probabilities of PFZ crowns with Cerabien ZR (CZR) layer used as the veneering material and inserted in private practice on posterior teeth are equal to PFM crowns. Success rates were independent of location whether molar or premolar.

CZR (Cerabien ZR) is a new porcelain specifically developed for making all ceramic crowns in use with zirconia frameworks. Single crowns made from CZR with zirconia can be used in the posterior as well as anterior due to its extremely high flexural strength. The combination of CZR and zirconia will give you enhanced esthetics and fit with maximum strength for an overall superior restoration.

Replication of the natural tooth shades

Due to Luster’s exceptionally fine particle size, it can achieve the selective reflection that assures the opalescence seen in the natural tooth. Because of the consistently smaller particle size found with CZR Luster Porcelain, CZR exhibits minimal wear in the mouth, resulting in less deterioration of the opposing dentition.

Excellent compatibility and bonding with zirconia frameworks

Exceptional Handling Characteristics

Ideal stability with outstanding resistance to fractures and chipping

Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (50–500ºC 10-6 K-1)

The thermal expansion of CZR is entirely different from those of other porcelains. Therefore, mixing or using with other porcelains is not recommended.
