WOMEN from refugee and migrant backgrounds will get help under-standing their rights if they are vic-tims of family violence through a grant to the Whittlesea Community Legal Service.

The service will get an extra $67,000 from Victoria Legal Aid to help women who might not be aware of their rights, VLA spokeswoman Kristen Hilton said.

She said there had been a dra-

matic rise in family violence in the Whittlesea municipality, which is the second fastest growing municipality in Australia.

“Over the past fi ve years Whittlesea has been in the top three munici-palities for family violence incidents reported by Victoria Police across the north west metropolitan region,” she said.

“Women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) com-munities often do not have the same family or social support networks that many women rely on

in family violence situations.”“In our experience, women from

CALD backgrounds are particularly vulnerable, and often experience sig-nifi cant barriers to accessing justice and developing an understanding of the Australian legal system.

“This can stem from language diffi culties, differing cultural understandings or sometimes their past experiences as refugees who have faced torture, trauma and dislocation.”

Ms Hilton, the VLA’s director of civil justice, access and equity, said

VLA recognised the important role community legal centres played in providing legal help and advocating for their communities.

Whittlesea Community Legal Service chief executive Jemal Ahmet said services in the area were not meet-ing the needs of people from CALD communities experiencing family violence .

“It’s not to say that family violence only happens in CALD communities, but some communities do experience added complexities, challenges and barriers when seeking help.”

FLOWER wholesalers and growers relocating to the Epping wholesale fruit, veg-etable and fl ower market will pay 7 per cent less than their current rents when the facility opens, according to the state government.

The 67 tenants of the fl ower section of the new market in Coopers Street were last week awarded stands after a ballot.

Minister for Major Projects David Hodgett said the ballot was an important stage in “removing uncertainty for fl ower growers and whole-salers” in their relocation to Epping.

“The Victorian Coalition government’s priority is to complete this important pro-cess and get the market up and running in 2014-15,” he said.

“When the new fl ower mar-ket opens, complete with supe-rior dedicated facilities, fl ower market tenants will pay about 7 per cent less than they do now for stands and cool rooms,” he said.

Melbourne Market Authority chairman Neil Lowe said the ballot process was the “corner-stone of a smooth transition to state-of-the-art facilities at Epping”.

Digital hub launched to help residentsSUE [email protected]

THE Mill Park Library digital hub was launched last week to help residents and local businesses get the full benefi ts from the National Broadband Network.

The retiring member for the fed-eral seat of Scullin, Harry Jenkins, and Scullin Labor candidate Andrew Giles tried out an interactive televi-sion that is part of the hub.

The hub has three booths for small groups and includes table-top touch-screen computers connected to the internet, interactive whiteboards, video conferencing facilities, iPads, e-readers and computers.

The Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy, launched the hub. He said that since the fi rst fi bre rollout in South Morang last year, more than 40 per cent of residents had moved to the NBN.

He said the federal government had also provided funding for a “virtual village” using the NBN for seniors in

the City of Whittlesea. The “village” allowed seniors to participate via high-defi nition video conferencing in community activities including exer-cise classes, online forums and virtual visits with family and community members, he said.

Cr Nicola Davis said an example of how the village could help older, house-bound residents was through online exercise classes.

“We can target information and services to older people through new online technology, which will improve the support we provide and help them maintain their health, well-being and independence.’’

She said 6000 homes in South Morang had access to the NBN, and over the next three years about 39,000 homes and businesses in the area were expected to be connected.

NORTHERN HEALTH unveiled a photographic collage at McKenna House, its in-house palliative care unit, last week to mark “palliative care week”.

The photographs were of staff and friends of the unit, said Northern Health chief executive offi cer Janet Compton.

“This collage will bring patients and their families together with the community that supports them and the staff who are involved in their care, and will showcase the diversity of the region and the dedication of our Northern Health staff,” she said.

“We believe that palliative care is not just about providing end-of-life care, but about offer-ing support and treatment to our patients at all stages of a life-lim-iting illness.”

McKenna House nurse unit manager John Doran said pallia-tive care involved looking after a person’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs.

SUE [email protected]

BUNDOORA academics are leading a research project into the hidden crime of sexual assault against elderly women.

It is called “Norma’s project” after an 84-year-old woman with dementia who was sexually abused by a staff member when she was in respite care two years ago.

Researchers from La Trobe University’s Australian Research

Centre in Sex, Health and Society, the University of Melbourne and the National Ageing Research Institute want to talk to older women about their experiences of sexual assault.

“We hear a lot about the sexual assault of young women, which is important. However, we rarely hear of the trauma experienced by older women,” said Dr Catherine Barrett, the chief researcher for the project, based at La Trobe University.

“We know older women experi-ence sexual assaults from family

members and service providers, as well as from strangers, yet there is lit-tle community awareness of this issue and a lack of knowledge about pre-vention strategies.”

She said that nationally there were 344 reports of sexual assault in resi-dential age care during 2011-2012.

“We have been told stories about older women who have reported sexual assault but not been believed, their statement attributed to dementia or an experience from their youth,” Dr Barrett said. “Some older women

don’t report sexual assault because they are frightened or feel ashamed.”

Norma’s relatives said the assault had a “profound’’ impact on her life.

Dr Barrett said researchers wanted to talk to women over 65 who had been sexually assaulted, and also trusted family members and service providers.

“The research will lead to the development of prevention strategies and improve the response of commu-nity and aged care service.”

Details : normasproject.org.au

Norma’s project to help women TINA Wright was particularly moved by Whittlesea’s Sorry Day commemoration yesterday.

The Whittlesea resident’s mother Eunice was among the stolen generation and was one of 15 Koori representatives invited to Canberra to receive the nation’s apology to the sto-len generation in 2008.

She was part of the City of Whittlesea’s Sorry Day com-memorations, which also acknowledged the contributions of “uncle” Reg Blow – who passed away last year – to the Whittlesea Reconciliation Group of which he was a chairman.

Whittlesea mayor Rex Griffi n, who led the annual Sorry Day Walk in the council’s South Morang civic centre gardens, said the council would install plaques along the walk to hon-our Mr Blow.

“Uncle Reg was a champion for reconciliation in the commu-nity and encouraged the sharing of stories about the injustices against Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, to pro-mote understanding across the wider community,” Cr Griffi n said.

Ms Wright, a former student at RMIT University’s Bundoora campus, said her mother’s story was included in the Bringing them Home report, which laid the foundation for National Sorry Day.

Her mother, aunt and brother were removed from their home on the Lake Condah Mission in 1954 when Ms Wright was a young child. They were sent to a Ballarat orphanage.

A STATE-of-the-art Bundoora fer-tility clinic will be a gift for women going through the “harrowing” expe-rience of trying to conceive, accord-ing to a former IVF patient.

The Bundoora Fertility and IVF Clinic opened its consulting and pro-cedure rooms and an IVF laboratory last week.

Surgical procedures will be referred to Northpark Private Hospital.

Sarah, who preferred not to give her full name, gave birth to Archie 10 months ago. She said an all-purpose clinic would provide personal and local care, and medical necessities.

She was a patient of Dr Alex Eskander, one of the clinic’s four spe-cialists, but had to travel to St Kilda Road for the IVF.

“It has an effect on your whole life – your emotional health,” Sarah said.

She said the more you had to travel around for fertility treatment, the more diffi cult the experience was.

“I think you need a place that can take everything into account,” she said. “Not just the state of your eggs, but all your fertility problems.”

As a fertility specialist, gynaecolo-gist and obstetrician, Dr Eskander said the Bundoora clinic was unique because it had all the services in the same place.

He has treated fertility patients in his rooms at Northpark Private Hospital for six years, but they have had to travel to the city for the IVF procedure.

Dr Eskander said it would make a big difference to patients if they could get “personalised care” from one doctor at one location the whole way through. “They need to trust you to take them across the journey.’’

The clinic, run by City Fertility Centre, will hold a free informa-tion session on Wednesday, May 22. Details: cityfertility.com.au

PROFILE

Chengwu Guo was only 10 when he left his home in southern China to pursue the ballet career that eventually brought him

to Australia. “It was a very hard decision,” he says. But it has paid off handsomely. Guo had been dancing for a year in his hometown of Jiujiang when teachers encouraged him to audition for a spot at the Beijing Dance Academy – he was one of only 15 boys selected in a nationwide hunt.

Getting the part meant Guo had to move away from his parents to live at the Beijing academy’s boarding school for seven years. As an only child, Guo says he and his parents thought very carefully about whether or not he should leave the family home.

But it was the right decision, he says, because he had the appropriate physique and was a natural dancer. “I was mucking around for a bit and then I started liking it,” says the 24-year-old from Bundoora .

In 2006, Guo won a full scholarship at the Prix de Lausanne competition in Switzerland to complete his ballet training at any institution in the world.

“I knew nothing about overseas companies and western ballet,” he says. But he took the advice of his teachers in Beijing and chose the Australian Ballet School (ABS).

It was in his graduation year at the ABS that Guo met Li Cunxin, the Chinese-Australian ballet dancer whose life story became the subject of a best-selling book, Mao’s Last Dancer.

“I was young and I didn’t know much English – he was like a mentor to me,” he says .

Cunxin took Guo under his wing. Their relationship was cemented when Guo was selected to play a teenage Cunxin in the fi lm version of Mao’s Last Dancer.

It was a surprise for Guo, who had no idea that Cunxin was in the audience with fi lm director Bruce Beresford at Guo’s graduate exhibition performance.

“Li sent a text to me in the lead-up to the performance. He said do well and try hard,” Guo says. “After my show, someone said: ‘Li is outside the dressing room’ – he was very happy and had the biggest smile on his face.”

Standing next to Cunxin was “a tall man” Guo had never seen before; it was Beresford. Both men were blown away by Guo’s performance and asked him to take on the part in the fi lm. Guo was on set three months later.

“After that movie Li and I got closer – we’re like a family,” Guo says.

Through his many successes, Guo had been away from his family, something he describes as “very diffi cult” for his parents. So last February, Guo used money from his 2011 Telstra Ballet Dancer Award to pay for a visa for his parents to come to Australia and live with him. Guo says it was diffi cult to adjust to

the new living arrangement, but he was happy he could be with his parents.

“I knew we were probably going to have a problem when we lived together, but I prefer for them to be here,” he says.

Guo is enjoying a recent promotion to senior artist in the Australian Ballet. He hopes one day to become a principal, and eventually be a teacher at the ballet school.

“I love helping people,” he says. “I don’t want to be good by myself; I want younger dancers to get better so we can all be good together.”

Guo is performing in the Australian Ballet’s triple-bill Vanguard, which features work by George Balanchine, Jiri Kylian and Wayne McGregor. Vanguard opens on June 6 for 12 performances at the Arts Centre.

COVERSTORY

For 45 years Jack Thompson has embodied the Australian spirit on screen and he’s not about to stop now, writes Peter Wilmoth

At 72 the great Jack Thompson still commands an impossible-to-ignore presence. He’s got the sort of baritone that belongs to the ages and is built for reciting verse. He’s a big man with big appetites

for poetry, music and stories, and he has the gnarly demeanor of a bush balladeer with a harmonica in his pocket or a farmer who’s just returned from the fi elds, relaxing with a beer.

In very real ways, Jack Thompson is all of these things. He was there at the beginning of the Australian fi lm industry in the late 1960s and, in his rough-hewn, no bullshit-style, has been ever-present since – as close to some sort of living Australian embodiment as our fi lm industry has produced, Chips Rafferty notwithstanding.

“Over the years the experiences I have had in life have served me very well as an actor,” he says. “In Breaker Morant it was easy for me to understand what it was like to be in the army because I had (been); Sunday Too Far Away – I’d worked in shearing sheds as a 16-year-old.”

For Thompson, acting started as a hobby. “It was something I loved doing. I never thought of doing it professionally. We didn’t have a fi lm industry here. If you wanted to be an actor you would have had to – like all of them did, Peter Finch, Bud Tingwell – they all went to England or, like Rod Taylor, to America.”

Thompson was in the army – the Medical Corp – running a pathology laboratory at Queensland Military Hospital. “I switched from a science degree to an arts degree. But all that time I was working at Twelfth Night Theatre. Michael Caton and I met there. But it was a hobby. He was a windmill salesman and I was a soldier. We would work at Twelfth Night putting on Shakespeare for schools.”

In the late ’60s, the Australian fi lm industry gained momentum and Thompson was a major player, on screen and politically as an advocate for the industry. “I was excited by the Australian fi lm industry and its growth. In 1968 when I started we weren’t making fi lms. So, coincidentally, because of the time, I was part of the renaissance of Australian fi lm, there at the front of it …

“We went (for Breaker Morant) to the Cannes Film Festival. There was a headline that described me as the fl agship of the Australian fi lm industry. My mate said, ‘How does it feel to be a fl agship?’ I said, ‘It’s pretty scary, mate, the next headline could read, ‘Flagship sinks’,” says Thompson, laughing.

Thompson was telling Australian stories – shearers in Sunday Too Far Away and urban sex symbols in Petersen. “I felt that I was part of something vital and important,” he says. “Rather than say, ‘OK, now that

I’m recognised I’ll go and make a career in Hollywood’, it was more like, ‘Now that I’m recognised let’s go, we’ve got something that we can do here’. I felt a responsibility to the industry I had become very much a part of.”

Thompson worked on several American productions including Midnight in the Garden

of Good and Evil (1997). He relished the challenge of nailing different accents. “There is a wide range of American accents … My fi rst real American role was with Sally Field in a piece called A Woman of Independent Means. I had to play a man from East Texas. I worked with a wonderful dialect coach. In the end people thought I was from East Texas.”

“I love it if a shearer comes to me, or their father was a shearer and they’ve seen Sunday

Too Far Away and they say, ‘That’s it, mate. I know that man you play.’ It is about being authentic.”

He’s no longer the young man who posed naked in Cleo in 1972, but he’s in good nick having lost a lot of weight after a health scare. It was while fi lming Baz Luhrmann’s epic Australia in 2007 that Thompson learnt he had an umbilical hernia, and doctors refused to operate until he had lost weight.

“It can kill you if it gets strangulated,” he says of the hernia. “And you’re in a plane … or if you can’t get to a hospital, it can strangulate and kill you very quickly.

“I had to wait until we fi nished fi lming. They wanted me heavy for the role so I stayed heavy but I had to use an elastic support to hold the hernia in all through the (fi lming), riding horses and everything.”

The doctor said it would be dangerous to operate unless he lost 10 kilograms, so he went on a strict diet and shed 12 kilograms in eight weeks. Over 18 months he lost 30 kilograms.

“After the operation, we had to go back and do some reshoots on Australia,” he says. “Baz turned and looked at me and said, ‘You’ve lost a lot of weight’. ‘Yeah’. He turned to his assistant and said, ‘Make a note – fat suit’.’’

Thompson has always had a great appetite for life – for music, poetry and country living. “I think it’s essential to have passions outside of acting. It’s your life experience that you bring to performance.’’ He likes “bringing people’s attention to the extraordinary heritage of literature we have in this country, which otherwise might be missed in the fl urry of instant entertainment”.

As an actor, Thompson is still in demand. He has a small role in Luhrmann’s The Great

Gatbsy. “I loved doing that.’’

It’s still a

busy life, but Thompson can escape to his bolthole to refi ll the well. For more than 40 years he has owned a farm inland from Coffs Harbor in New South Wales.

“It’s not so much an escape,” he says. “If there is an escape, the escape is into the city. I see the farm and the life that it requires as pretty fundamental and pretty real. There’s no one out there to bullshit. There was an old guy out there, he was my neighbour … and I said once having been away working, ‘I’ve missed it, Bill, I don’t know what it is I miss about it, I miss the view, being here’, and he said, ‘You miss the dingo’s breakfast, Jack’. I said,

‘Yeah, what are you talking about?’ ‘You know the dingo’s breakfast – a piss on the ground and a good look round.’ I laughed. There’s something fabulously accurate about that ...

“I had a romantic vision of the farm when I bought it in 1969. I’d only been working for a year as an actor. I knew that if it didn’t work out for me I could retreat to the farm and have a roof over my head. We had a vegetable garden, we’d have food in our mouths, chickens, eggs.

“The notion was that once my career as an actor was over … there’d be the villa from which I’d travel to my adventures in a different part of the world, and to which I’d return with tales of those adventures …”

Soon after our interview, Thompson fl ies to the US for his role in Bruce Beresford’s version of Bonnie and Clyde for HBO (Home Box Offi ce). After 45 years, Jack Thompson is still front-and-centre on our screens, and he isn’t going anywhere. Except maybe to the farm for a dingo’s breakfast.

With the rolling hills of Kangaroo Ground as its backdrop, Redbox Vineyard and Winery stands

on more than eight hectares and has 8000 vines that are 25 years old. The vineyard produces

three types of grapes and creates nine products from the cabernet grapes, including the award-

winning cabernet sauvignon, the 2012 cabernet blanc, the delicious dessert wine ice cabernet

and homemade cabernet jelly. The next experiment will be cabernet cordial for kids. The winery,

owned by Colin Spencer and his wife Glenys, is open every weekend. Visitors can sample

the fi ne wines and bring a picnic to share in the grounds – there is no charge for using the

barbecues or facilities. They can also buy Glenys’ delectable lemonade scones, cakes, jellies

and preserves, and enjoy them with freshly prepared tea or coffee. On June 15 and 16, Redbox

will be part of Winter Winefest and they will release their new vintage wines from 2012 and 2013,

with the long-awaited return of the estate riesling and an exceptional chardonnay.

MOTORING

My friend Don produces a car club magazine and he can’t spell to save himself. He always mixes the double

and single-r in Ferrari and cannot accept that there are no double letters in Maserati. And while he always gets the Romeo correct, he tends to spell the fi rst word Alpha. It’s Alfa, of course, for Anonima Lombarda Fabbrica Automobili.

He never misses Subaru and I asked him how he manages this. Simple, he said, backwards in text speak Subaru is u r a bus.

Could he spell continuously variable transmission? It’s one of the big features of the new Forester (he always uses a double r in Forester, by the way). The other one, X-Mode, should prove less challenging.

The continuously variable auto is a nicely progressive transmission seldom caught out and pleasingly economical with the 2.5-litre motor. It also makes for a fl exible car, and works better than the bulk of conventional autos they’re putting in SUVs these days, the

ones that change down so early the motor is on the point of labouring.

And X-Mode is essentially a computer program balancing load, torque and road conditions to give the best grip possible. It’s something you notice not just on dirt roads, where it works very nicely, but also in tight, hard cornering where the Forester displays surprising grip for something of its weight and height.

Foresters have always been very fl exible, things you can use with confi dence off-road, and I suspect this one will be a little better than earlier models given the CVT and X-Mode combination. It also gets a hill descent control that works, something that anyone who has tried to get down a muddy hill while staying off both brake and accelerator will appreciate.

At the same time it’s an entirely acceptable city car. And while a little more expensive than others in the yummy mummy category, it offers a good level of equipment and

excellent comfort, plus plenty of room for stuff. A back-up camera is standard and so are rear seats that can be folded from the cargo area, a full-size spare, Bluetooth and cruise.

Personally, I’d get the base model rather than the L, as tested. The L gets a few extra bits and bobs, like alloy wheels and gearshift paddles, but there’s nothing there that would compel me to part with an extra $3000.

PROPERTYOFTHEWEEK

In most of the newer parts of the north, car travel is almost always your only option. But in the established, village-like heart of

Epping, you can easily get around by public transport and on foot.

This three-bedroom townhouse is just 300 metres from Epping train station, and a short, safe stroll from St Monica’s College and St Peter’s Primary School.

The property also backs onto Epping’s Peppercorn parklands. A pleasant walk beneath the trees and across the nearby Findon Creek will take you to the Greenbrook shops where you’ll fi nd an IGA supermarket, pharmacy and a range of takeaway options.

If you’re after more serious shopping, a bus

to Westfi eld Plenty Valley runs almost directly past the house. You are only an eight-minute walk from Epping Plaza and 15 minutes from Northern Hospital.

While many central locations would be bustling with people and traffi c, this property is hidden down a quiet cul-de-sac.

The vendor says it’s not just being close to everything, including the park, that has made this property such a great place to live. It’s also the sense of community.

“You never have to go far if you’ve run out of coffee,” she says. “The kids all play together out on the street, while the adults catch up over a cup of tea or glass of wine.”

The vendor has lived here since the property was built by a local builder 12 years ago. She still loves it just as much as she did when it was brand new.

Her pride in the house is evident from the

lush and established front garden that makes a pretty picture beneath the property’s pair of highly pitched, red brick gables.

The downstairs section of the house is modern and functional. It has two good-sized bedrooms with built-in wardrobes, a central bathroom and a separate toilet. The ground fl oor is ideal for elderly live-in relatives.

The main living hub is served by a spacious kitchen with a stainless steel dishwasher and gas cooktop. Glass doors open out to the deep backyard, which has a bird bath as its centrepiece. But the best views of the garden and rambling parklands beyond are not from out here, but from up above.

The property’s second storey is defi ned by soaring cathedral ceilings held up by exposed timber beams and trusses. In the expansive north-facing room, which has been a main bedroom and is now a Cape Cod-inspired

lounge – french doors open to reveal treetop views. You can watch the sun go down from out on the balcony or just snuggle up on the couch in front of the Coonara wood heater.

It’s this space, with its soaring ceilings and Tasmanian oak fl oors, that the vendor will miss the most. Almost a mirror image of this room can be found across the hall.

This street-facing room has been a wonderful playroom/rumpus over the years and would be large enough to separate into two bedrooms should extra accommodation be needed.

The landing between the rooms has plumbing attached should the next owner want to install a bathroom.

Other than that, there’s not much else to do. The next owners can simply move in and start enjoying the quiet village life where everything you need, including a cup of sugar, is just a moment away.
