Military members nation-wide confront a multitude of problems during their careers, the last thing they need to worry about is their pet’s care during their service commitments. Dogs On Deployment is a 501(c)(3) national non-profit which provides an online network for service members to search for volunteers who are willing to board their pets during their owner’s service commitments. Dogs on Deployment promotes responsible, life-long pet ownership by military pet owners by advocating for military pet owner rights, providing educational resources and granting financial assistance for military pet owners during times of emergency. Join Dogs on Deployment’s mission in changing the lives of our military members and their pets. Dogs on Deployment aids pets of all types that belong to active duty, reservists, guard, honorably discharged veterans and their families.Our Goals• DoD aims at having DoD Boarders located near all major military bases in the United States. A military member should be able to find a DoD Boarder located within 50 miles, no matter what base they are stationed at or deploying from.• DoD will become a first resource for military members to turn to when they need long term boarding for their pets. This includes, but is not limited to, being recommended by military assistance organizations, base family support centers and animal shelters impacted by relinquished pets.• DoD plans to increase the rights and education that pet owners have while serving active duty in the military. This includes bringing light to the problem of pet relinquishment by military members to higher levels of the chain of command, and petitioning for annual, military-wide pet responsibility training. We want pets to be considered part of the family by military regulations, not disposable objects.• DoD will help promote the military-pet community by providing a database of partnered pet related businesses which support their troops through discount and incentive programs. Users will be able to search for local businesses which will provide them with affordable options for pet care.• DoD wants to help qualified military members with the cost of pet care during emergencies, and/or before and during deployments in order to promote responsible pet-ownership, providing financial assistance to get military pets spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and help with cost of pet care.

The LSU Tigers played perhaps their best game in several years on Saturday when they hosted the number one ranked Oklahoma Sooners at the PMAC. Defensively, they played brilliant ball, switching from zone to man-to-man and keeping the smaller Sooners from coming inside. The Tigers even outshot the visitors from 3-point range, where Oklahoma has claimed its number one status with the top two percentage 3-point shooters in the country. But a lack of focus and commitment by LSU’s best player cost them the game, 77-75. End of story.
The Tigers are a talented group with three potential NBA players including one superstar freshman. The problem is that Ben Simmons likes to bring a knife to a gun fight and be the traffic cop instead of The Man. Everyone says Simmons is The Man but this young, extremely talented and poised first year player hasn’t shown the hunger that separates the very good from the great and the great from the legends. Simply put, if Ben Simmons had played with passion and purpose, the Tigers would have won Saturday’s game by at least six points. When your team, Ben (YOUR TEAM) blows a 14-point lead mid-2nd half at home and you only take three shots in the half and never drive to the basket with even a hint of a LeBron James purpose, what do you expect? Miss Manners would have been proud but Mr. Matters knows that this kid didn’t suck it up when necessary. You try your damnedest and if you don’t win, you’re carried off on your shield. Simmons looked like he hardly broke a sweat in the second half and he acted as if it was just another game. Son, it’s not. And all your prose about commitment and being the best and not taking a backseat to anyone else…well, it’s all talk now. Did James text you after the game, Ben? If he did, I’m sure he reamed you good. James was in the NBA at your age, kicking grass and taking games. There’s times, Ben, that you look like you’ve been smoking grass and taking dinner reservations. You really revel in this comparison to King James?
One and done is your plan for LSU. How about giving the school that one instead of a fraction? If the Tigers make the tournament, they probably will do so in spite of you, because players like Quarterman and Hornsby, Victor and Patterson, Blakeney and Robinson have the ingredient you haven’t developed yet - heart. I don’t want to hear the critics say you’re too young to put this team on your back when necessary. I’d like to hear you say you will shoulder this team and say it with fire and purpose, like Buddy Hield, Isiaha Cousins and Ryan Spangler of Oklahoma showed as did most of your teammates. Chris Jackson and Shaq showed it, as did several other All American talents from LSU over the years. I know the Oklahoma trio are all seniors, but you’re the one who was anointed College Player of the Year before you even ever stepped onto a college basketball court. Either disavow it or prove it. No one will remember your one and done if your one isn’t well-done with results. Highlight reels are great but this team needs a highlight player. You know better, Ben. Staying home in Baton Rouge in March shouldn’t be an option for this group of players. If you don’t believe it, keep on keeping on, getting Dick Vitale excited about your speed and reverse dunks and watching this opportunity go down the drain for the LSU Tigers.

Good time to prune fruit trees.February is usually our coldest month of the year. What better to do than prepare your fruit trees for the oncoming spring. There are many benefits of pruning of fruit trees including controlling tree height, developing good limb structure, developing good fruit production, and to remove diseased or damaged branches. This is the recommended time of year to prune spring flowering fruit trees such as apples, peaches, nectarines, plums, and citrus.
The first step in pruning is to gather the right tools. A well-stocked tool kit should always accompany a gardener with a mission to prune. Some
of the basics include handheld bypass pruners, lopper style pruners and a pruning saw for anything large. Remember the sharpest tool is the safest tool because it will take less effort to use it. Start your pruning process by removing all dead and damaged limbs completely from the tree. Be meticulous in your ways so that you do not miss anything. Next, go through and examine the tree for any limbs that cross and rub on each other. Select the healthiest limb and completely remove the other from the tree. The remaining steps can differ from tree to tree. Apples, peaches, nectarines, and plums are commonly pruned to an “open center” style. This helps with keeping the tree wider rather than taller and most importantly, it helps to maximize the amount of sunlight hitting each leaf on the tree. Citrus trees do not require too much pruning. Prune off any branches that grow towards the ground. This will help with mowing and any herbicide applications. You can also remove any branches growing upwards in order to control the height of the tree. Be careful not to over prune your citrus. Too much pruning will put the citrus tree in a vegetative state which will delay flowering.

It may be a little early to plant your spring garden but it’s never too late to plan and prepare for when that day comes. Unless you are growing out seedling vegetable transplants in your
greenhouse there’s not a whole lot that gardeners think about during this time of year, but one can definitely benefit by having your soil tested and analyzed by the LSU AgCenter’s Soil Testing Lab. Farmer’s that make a living off growing and providing food base their fertilizer programs off the results of a soil test. The routine soil test option is the most common and will give you precise information about the soil in your garden. It will give the soil pH and provide you with a range of some of the more important nutrients plants need to grow properly.
To take a sample you will need a clean bucket and a hand trowel. If taking more than one sample it would be advisable to have labels and a marking pen to identify each different sample. To properly retrieve a soil sample for your garden, take the hand trowel and scoop out some soil from 6 inches below the soil surface. Using the bucket, collect several random samples throughput the bed and mix them together. Submit a sample from this mixture you have created. This concept stems from the fact that there are living organisms in the soil that interact and change the fertility over time. By taking several samples and mixing them together it will give a good representation of soil fertility for the garden as a whole. Look for LSU Ag Center soil test boxes at feed stores, garden centers, or your local parish extension office.

Kids are tiny and kids are small, but they are always sweet! Wow! Holidays are over and we are already into Mardi Gras and Valentines. If you want to do a little something special with the kiddies, Keep It Simple & Sweet!~ KISS! Chocolate chips , sprinkles and marshmallows should always be in the pantry. You will need wooden skewers or plastic straws. Let the fun begin. Melt about 1/2 cups of chocolate chips in a small ramekin for about 40 seconds. Stir and go another 10 seconds if not very smooth. Put a stick or straw into the large marshmallow.
Dip marshmallow into melted chocolate, then into sprinkles. Use dried beans in a glass to support the Marshmallow Pops to dry. Large pretzel sticks and half bananas with a stick are another choice. The kids always enjoy this food craft. The hardest part about this project is resisting licking your chocolate fingers! If it’s all in the family, let it go! Enjoy this sweet moment with your little Valentines! This would be a fun valentine to give out to classmates with a message on a hand cut paper heart tied to the stick. Place each marshmallow stick in a ziplock snack bag.
