    When Less Means More

Can you help me figure out how to mentor a large worship team with high opinions ofthemselves and dysfunctional team dynamics?

The young woman who asked this question is not alone. Worship leaders everywhere stilldeal with this issue. Self important attitudes are at the top of my bad list. I do not believein growth for the sake of growth itself. Its always been about the heart being in submissionto God. That will always be the bottom line. In many cases we can have more intimaterelationships in small settings.

The more a team grows the more administrative duties there are and more team dynamics tomanage. For the record, I am not promoting running from those things, just that they makeit difficult to build intimacy. In addition to the amount of time it takes providing each newinstrumentalist with their particular charts or music, larger teams must deal with findingpractice space for each section of their team, band, vocals, orchestra, brass, percussion etc.How about sharing some of that talent instead of micro-managing it?

Worship leaders are redifining what it means be on a team. They are networking like neverbefore and using partnerships and technology to expand their teams. Teams that have babiedtheir players or singers are at the most risk. Teams that work on their personal issues andskill level are the least risk.We are going to see more teams that can easily dial up or down intheir efforts and resources. As evolving worship models enable the growth of small, multipleteams, tiny churches are likely to acheive huge ministry feats.

Know the one thing your team does best. Even if there are only two of you! Check for godly

attitudes on a consistent basis. Choose a networking church to partner with. If your team islarge, share your instrumentalists and vocalists with their smaller team. Be strategic aboutthe partnerships you form and sync up your calendars.

These kinds of relational, networking moves can dissolveattitude problems and teach your team to give what they haveto others. I believe it is the future of worship teams.Melissa Saulnier

continued looking at her, trying to makeeye contact because I wanted to smile ather, but suddenly my eyes shifted to herfeet.

They were beat up, hard, dirty, andexposed. Though it was 30 somethingdegrees outside and snowing sideways, this woman had no shoes. All thatcovered her feet were an old pair of pinkhouse slippers that were completelyworn out. Her feet looked like they

were hurting and cold. I looked downat my feet and saw my favorite pair ofnew balances. I love those shoes. Myfeet were so comfortable, but my heartwent out to her. Again, my love for thiswoman who seemed out of place grewabundantly with each announcement thecheck in lady made and with each newperson that lined up an hour before theplane arrived.

Then something happened that makes meuncomfortable... God started tugging onmy heart. I felt that Holy Spirit nudgethat is very difficult to ignore. You knowthe one. So there I was, sitting in my seatlooking across the way at my new friend.Or at least I hoped we would be friends. In that moment, I knew God was askingme to give her my shoes. I heard a storya couple of weeks ago about a woman

working with a church that ministersto the homeless and this woman gavea homeless woman her shoes. So Godreminded me of that story, and I startedtrying to argue with God.

I lost that argument. Fair and square.

See, I didnt want to give her my shoes;Ill be honest with you. These are myfavorite pair of shoes that I own and Ilove them! But I knew that God wascalling me to be willing. So finally Hesoftened my heart and increased mycompassion for this sweet woman, andI resolved to give her my shoes. So nowI had to figure out how the heck I wasgoing to go about doing that.

So I decided that instead of walking overto her and handing her my shoes withlittle to no explanation, I devised a planthat was fool proof. I was going to lineup behind her in line to board the plane. Then I would sit next to her, tell herhello and what I thought God was tellingme to do, the shoes would be given, andthat would be the end of it. Well, fromthere, my plan didnt exactly go as, well,

    planned.

I did get behind her in line. But as webegan boarding the plane, the flightattendant realized that her ticket wasinvalid. So she was forced to get out ofline, go back to the ticketing agent, get anew ticket, and reboard the plane. Well,I couldnt exactly stand outside and waitfor her, so to my sadness, I went aheadand boarded the plane.

Then I decided that maybe God wouldallow her to sit next to me. So I prayedfor that, but that didnt happen. Despitemy best efforts at a huge friendly sitnext to me please smile, she walked onpast me toward the back of the plane.

Plan B or was it plan C was officially ago.

Mother Theresa said once that wecannot do great things, only smallthings with great love. I saw thetruth of this first hand on Saturday.Something happened to me today thatwill forever change the way I look atlife, salvation, giving and receiving.

Last night I played a show with ShaunGroves in Tulsa, OK so this morningI got up early to fly home to spendEaster with my family. While on my

layover, I was sitting at my terminalgating waiting on the plane to arrive. It was southwest, so of courseeveryone was already lining up eventhough the plane wasnt there. I sat inmy seat while wondering on the insidewhy people line up so early. Anyway...I digress.

So while sitting at my gate, a womanwalks up to the same area and

sits right across the way from me.Immediately I sensed that she washurting. I dont know why, but Icould just tell. All she had to carryon was a plastic sack with somepersonal belongings in it. She had onan old coat and it appeared that itdbeen a while since she had a shower. For some reason, the Lord gave mean immense love for this woman. I

So I decided that I would get off theplane when it landed, and wait forher. After a nice short flight, the planelanded. I walked out and waited forher. 30 people walked out. She wasntthere. Then another ten people walkedout. She wasnt there. At this point

my heart is breaking because Imthinking she stayed on the plane to goto Houston. So I decided I would goback on the plane and just hand themto her and then leave. At this point, there was no doubt in my mind. I wasgiving this woman my shoes.

But as I was about to return fromwhence I came, so to speak, my

friend came walking out of the plane! My heart start beating fast. I was sonervous! What would this womanthink? Would she call me crazy? Wouldshe think it was a scam or joke ofsome kind?

I caught her eyes and went up to herand the dialogue went something likethis:

LK: hi maam, can I ask you a randomquestion?Lady: sureLK: what size shoe do you wear?Lady: 9(Side note... I wear a size 9 and Iknew that she was going to say that, Iknew she was going to wear my exactsize shoe!)LK: omigosh! Thats so awesome...well, I know this sounds crazy, but Ifeel like God wants me to give you myshoes.Lady: I dont want to be some coverstoryLK: oh, trust me! This is no coverstory... Im no writer! Im a Christiansinger and I just want to give you myshoes(Side note: at my mention of being aChristian singer, she perked up, so I

thought that was my green light, butthen things just went south)Lady: well, I dont want your shoes, these are fine, and I dont need yourshoes

I proceeded to tell her about motherTheresa and about how Id been given

so much through Christ especially thisEaster season and I wanted to give toher from what God had given to me.She was skeptical and very standoffish. The dialogue continues

LK: do you believe in God?Lady: I dont know, not really sureLK: thats ok! Regardless of what youbelieve about Him, I know He lovesyou and He wants you to have somesweet new shoes! And I would love togive you mine!Lady: no thank you. No.LK: if you dont want my shoes, can Iask why?Lady: I just want incomeLK: do you have a job?Lady: noLK: do you live here in Austin?Lady: kind of, I dont know, I guess

So at this point I realized that she was, indeed, homeless. Im unsure as tohow she got on the plane, but I didknow that she had no one. She wasntflying to visit family. She wasnt ona business trip. She was alone. Withno one to greet her with flowers. She

was alone with only the clothes onher back and some other garmentsin her plastic sack. She was about towalk out into the freezing cold rainwith worn out house slippers. She wassad and I didnt know what to do. Iwanted to grab her and hug her andtell her that Jesus loved her and thateverything would be ok. I wanted totake the love I feel in my heart for

God and the love Ive experiencedfrom Him, and I wanted to stuff itinto her heart. I was hoping that shewould see the shoe offer as an act oflove from God directly to her.

But she continued to refuse the shoes. No matter what I said, she said no.She ended up walking ahead andme and I could tell that she wantedme to leave her alone. So I did. To

my complete and utter surprise andsadness, I let her walk off. Shoelessand sad. Five seconds didnt go bybefore I started weeping. I wasntcrying because she rejected my shoesand hurt my feelings. No, my tearswere birthed from a much deeperplace. I was crying because I so badlywanted that woman to know the loveand hope of Christ. That He died forher, but 3 days later rose again to giveus victory over death and to give ushope in this life. I was terribly brokenand confused as to why she wouldntaccept a free gift with zero stringsattached. I didnt want to make thisa charity case. I didnt want to dosomething for her so that I would feelbetter about myself or add anothernotch to my good works belt. No, Isimply wanted to do what I felt God

wanted me to do. Give her my shoes.

So as she walked off and my tears randown my face, I got into the elevator. My thoughts ran wild: why would Godmake me go through all that just tofail? Why did the woman not receivea free gift when she clearly neededshoes? Why was I so heartbroken overthis?

It wasnt until I got in the car when itall hit me like a linebacker.

The pain I was feeling became a

doorway into a realization. In thismoment, I realized a tiny percentageof what Christ must feel each timeone of us rejects him in some ways. There are multiple times a day whenHe offers me a free gift, a blessing,a chance to obey and I reject Him.I go about my business and dontgive Him a second thought. So manypeople reject Christs free gift of grace

and mercy. And maybe, just maybe, the Lord allowed me to go throughthis to give me a piece of firsthandexperience of what it feels like tooffer something with good intentions

and love and with no strings attachedbut for that to be rejected. I dont saythis to make you feel bad. I simplysay this for two reasons. I am writingthis experience in this blog to remindyou how important it is to follow Godwhen you hear that still small voice. When you feel that gentle nudge.Go for it! Im preaching to myselfhere because I dont always follow

Him. And then secondly, think abouthow many opportunities we have toaccept the blessings that Christ wishesto pour out on us for His glory, notours. So, through all of this, I learnedsome huge lessons. I learned thateven though the outcome might bedifferent than what you thought, thereis no failure when we are obedient toGods leading. And also, every time

Jesus offers me something better thanwhat Im settling for, I need to take it.Accept it with reckless abandon. Andrun with Him. He is always offeringus a better pair of shoes when He

sees our worn-out house slippers. Heknows we are about to go out intothe cold, rainy world and He offerssomething better. Will we take Him upon His offer? He is better. He is alwaysbe better than anything or anyonethis world can offer. Take Him up onHis offer. He has yet to disappoint. Istill have the shoes. And she still hasher shoes. Im praying that somehow, even though she wasnt able to receivetoday, maybe a seed was planted andsomeone else will be able to love herand pour into her and she will, oneday, accept love.

Cate Morris Doodle Dashedwhen I know where I want to go,but cant figure out how to getthere. A few years ago would besuch a season--it was the year Ibegan writing songs.I had set a goal to write one songa month. As a mother of fourchildren the task proved to bean exciting challenge. I beganfilling notebooks with ideas, andrecording melodies that had begunplaying in my head. I was on myway. And while I met my goalthat year, I wasnt entirely pleasedwith the final product. After all,I wanted to write a magnificentsonga song to be sung forgenerations.Intent on doing just that, I workedmyself into an analytical frenzy: Iread books by songwriters, read

interviews with successful writers, listened to seminars on writing, and tried to put all the formulastogether. I began to analyze thesongs I loved that others hadwritten only to find my reasons forloving each song were different. Some, I loved the lyrics, others itwas the arrangement of the music,

still others, with simple melodiesand few lyrics, I loved the waysome seemed to have the presenceof God built in.Then there were the endlessquestions: why did some songswith no predictable pattern makeit to the top 40? How come songs

Doodle-dashedMy husband Jamin and I wereshopping for a canoe some timeago, and found a likely prospectin the town classifieds. At thehome of the man offering the

    sale, we were greeted by a verycolorful, homesteader whoseconversation kept us in stitches.The topic veered to the goodold days---days before the mainroads were paved and life wasless hectic. As he began to sharehow now feels when he leaveshis driveway to drive into town;

with all the road construction, detours, and detours for thedetours, the confusion makeshim doodle-dashed.Doodle-dashed. The wordalone makes me laugh. WhileI have never heard it before, Iknow the feeling. Its a wordthat explains seasons in my life

with grammatical errors leadpeople into worship? Who knewthat la, la, la, la could make upan entire verse and people wouldsing it? I began picking music apartuntil I couldnt listen to the radiowithout being critical. Beforelong I no longer enjoyed listeningto music. I would write, write, write, and tear it up. Then I wouldre-write. I was working myselfinto a bundle of frustration. I wasdoodle-dashed.Have you ever been there? When I could take it no longer, Iwrote a letter to a mentor of mine,Billy Simon, asking for advice onhow to pull myself out of this placeof despair.Billy has been a songwriter forMeadowgreen Music, Sony

Music, Sparrow, Randy CoxMusic, Riverstone Publishing,Crosswind, Still Working, WordMusic, and Keybrothers/Jeff SilveyPublishing and is an accomplishedmusician and solo artist. It was myadmiration of his music that causedme to seek him out to begin with, but it is his heart of humility that

helped lead me out of doodle-dashed and put things in the rightperspective. The main thing is to be calm inyour gift and know that no matterwho hears what you create thatyour gift matters and is pleasingto the one who gave it to you.

doodle-dashedthats when weneed to refocus. We need only tostop, breathe, rest in God and allowHim to speak to our hearts andinspire our words. He will give uspeace and direction, and He willmake sure were exactly wherewere meant to be.

of us left behindreminding usof the promise of the resurrectionand the hope that extends beyondour last breath. When I recordedmy first cd this past spring, Iincluded her song, and namedit Resurrection. I have sinceheard from others who havelost loved ones; they share theencouragement they now receivefrom the words of the song. Itmay never make the top 40 on theradio, but it was a song writtenfor a purpose; and that purposecontinues to be fulfilled. What anhonor!

So the lesson is this: in the end, what matters most is that weminister where God plants us; thatthe words we write and sing feedwhoever God had intended themto feed. When we find ourselvesfocusing on ourselves and ourgifts, when we dont know wherewere going or how well ever

    get therewhen were feeling

No need to be overly anxious.Love life first then add somecommentary. We song writersare not necessary in the wholescope. Only our message is.Sometimes our gift can be soexciting to us that we give it toomuch attention and time. Stepout of your write, write, writestage and just write. Trees arevital for life on Earth. Theyrebeautiful and its nice to havesome in your yard. But if youplant one everywhere you thinkone can grow, soon you will havenowhere to play kickball. Have

peace that you are where Godwant s you to be, to affect thepeople He wants you to affect.A little while later, my mother-in-law, who was battling cancerthat had metastasized to herlungs, confided in me her fearof dying of suffocation. Shewas a believer in Jesus, so she

knew her destination, still thefear was mounting. As I weptwith her and prayed with her,I felt inspired to write a song. The song expressed that God isstill a God of Hope beyond ourlast breath and that no matterwhen she left us she would stillbe aliveforever. The song was

an intimate song, written just forher, and God used it to ministerpeace. Was it a magnificentsong? It was to her. Some months later my mother-in-law passed away. I sang hersong for the memorial and thistime the words spoke to those

    House of Thomas

Let us go and die with Jesus! It is in-

triguing to know that these words were

uttered by the great Doubting Thomas.

House of Thomas has centered its focus

on that one mission, helping others over-

come the doubt by flooding it with faith.

Directed and guided by Dove Award

nominee producer CR Pendleton (JohnReuben, House of Heroes), brothers

Robbie and Ronnie Lee, bassist Jeff

    Brooks and drummer Devin Merkison,

are storming onto the Atlanta scene.

    During their second live performance,

they were presented with the third place

award for overall musicianship and vocal

abilities at a record label sponsored tal-

ent show. Five months later, the group

took the first place award for best group

performance at the North Georgia Gos-pel Talent Search sponsored by Crown

    Day Promotions and PHD Studios.

In June 2006, House of Thomas released

    their first full-length album entitled

Without a Doubt produced by CR

    Pendleton. Throughout this album,

House of Thomas features a uniquely

    pervasive pop-rock sound with influ-

ences ranging from U2 and Bon Jovi,

to the Newsboys, Collective Soul, and

glory is how one dedicated fan

described them in a review on Indie

    Heaven.

An ordained minister, Robbie Leehas been leading and directing

youth for over 5 years, in addi-

tion to being a Husband and proud

    father of three young children.

Robbie wrote Tiny Hearts for his

wife about their loss of three un-

    born children. Tiny Hearts share

a hope that we can rest assured our

    Heavenly Father holds His children

tighter than we could ever long

for, and that we will see them oneday. Robbie performed this song

for a special live acoustic version

during a United Way talent competition

    in November, 2005. The performance

was viewed by more than 50,000 people

and earned Robbie the second place

award by popular vote. The band current-

ly leads worship each Sunday morning at

New Vision Church in Fayetteville, GA.

House of Thomas continues to performat church worship services, youth func-

tions, schools, festivals, and more. They

have sold out concerts, swarmed through

    music competitions and showcases, and

continue to bring the gospel of Jesus to

    audiences through their musical gifts

    Keith Urban.

House of Thomas drove a 5 week win-

ning streak on an Atlanta-based top 20

radio station battle of the bands program

by popular listener vote. This in turn

opened the door for opportunities to

perform with such artists as, the News-

    boys, Matthew West, David Crowder

Band, Third Day, By the Tree, Mat Kear-

ney, and Down Here. With its stronglyrical message inspired by Ronnie and

    Robbies grandfather, More Than Just

Alive has also been used numerous times

as the theme song for sermon messages,

    radio programs, and more.

The independent release, The Way We

Do was quickly voted to #1 on the

top 150 song radio chart Indie Heaven.

As a result, the song was selected to be

included on a nationally distributed radio

compilation CD in June 2006. The WayWe Do also struck a match with radio

listeners on when it was included in the

    nationally syndicated program Top 5

Live among such artists as Audio Adren-

aline and Sanctus Real. House of Thomas

embodies integrity both on stage through

    powerful, spirit-led performances, and

off stage where their Christian character

is reflected in their personal lives. They

walk with the Lord. They sing for His

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from theFather of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting

    shadows. James 1:17

Every good gift comes from our Father and every gift we receive fromHim is perfect. But, we soon forget; when we are faced with a trial. Ihave recently been overwhelmed with an abundant flow of gifts frommy Father, they just seemed to never end, one after the other, barely

even time to take a breath in between. Some came unexpectedly, some I had been praying for and waiting. But, all the time knowingand trusting that my Father knows my needs and will provide them.

Then one day I found myself on the pity pot, feeling uncertain abouta very definite need, starting to panic, crying to God Why is this sohard? When in His most tender way He reminded me of all that Hehas done and asked me Do you still doubt Me. Feeling like Thomasand experiencing the tenderness of Jesus when He understands and

just reassures us of that and reminds us stop doubting.

The rest of the verse says our Father who does not change like shiftingshadows. I am so grateful that I am secure in His unchanging love. Thebest gift any of us could ever receive is to be safe and secure in Hiskingdom as His child. What a blessing and what a beautiful gift. Whynot share that with someone this Christmas. The most valuable gift

    ever given is free!

Miles McKee Grace of GodYahweh who has declared himselfin the Lord Jesus Christ. It is then,as we know Him, that we can learn

to rest in Him and true peace willcome. But be warned, contrary tomuch popular preaching, the HolySpirit does not produce certainfeelings in us so that we can goaround thinking wonderful thingsabout ourselves, things that mightgain us a false confidence beforeGod!

No indeed, the Holy Spirit, far fromgenerating good feelings about us,continues to show us our entirelack of saving worthiness, but at thesame time declares Gods immensegoodness and grace towards us inChrist. At the same time as we seeour worthlessness the Spirit tellsus that we are fully righteous in

Christ. This brings true peace for itis a peace based upon the characterof God, demonstrated by the doingand dying of Christ alone.Furthermore, the Spirit does notenable us to feel or to believe, inorder to comfort us by our feelings.Even when He is powerfullyworking in us He turns our eye

away from His own work in us andfixes it on the love of God in Christ.Mark this down; there is nothingmore dangerous for the believerthan to be caught up in endlesshours of spiritual subjectivism. Our spirit filled meditation will befixed on Christ Jesus, not on our

    progress in our Christian lives.

At the core of the gospel we

discover the identity and characterof the great Jehovah/Yahwehunfolded in and by the Lord JesusChrist. This is important to graspfor Yahweh says there is, No Godelse beside me; a just God and aSavior; there is none beside me. Toadmit then that Jesus is the Savioris to admit that He is the true Godmanifest in the flesh. This is the

heart of the good news! He whohas bought and paid for us is theMighty God!So lets say it again, to obtain thepeace of God, we need to turn oureyes to the cross for it is there wesee God and His character mostvividly revealed. Horatius Bonar

    says,

See these two things, theCrucifiers and the Crucified. Seethe Crucifiers, the haters of Godand his Son. They are you, andthey are me. See the Crucified. Itis God himself; incarnate love. It isthe God who made you, sufferingdying for the ungodly. Can you

question his grace? In the light of the cross, how canyou think then that God has turnedagainst you? How can you possiblythink that God is not for you? Howcan you think that He has forgottenyou? I know that sometimes lifecomes at us hard and sometimes

Have you ever felt as if God hasforgotten you? Life seems bleakand you have no peace. We all

get like that at times, but there issomething we must learn in thosesituations. We need to grasp thatpeace, true peace, doesnt comefrom our circumstances, butcomes rather as we understandGods faithful, just and graciouscharacter.

Even when our life is not in

disintegration mode, true peacewill not come to us divorcedfrom an understanding of Godsnature. Its His character, notours, which is our resting place! No matter what our situation, theHoly Spirit will not give us truepeace irrespective of our views of

God. If we fail to grasp the truecharacter of God, then we do notknow God and we are worshiping,at best, a very fractured versionof the True and Living God. It isno wonder then that there is notrue peace! The Holy Spirit isholy and, being holy, He cannotbless the worship of a false God.It is only in connection with the

truth concerning God, the Godof all grace, that the Spirit givespeace. It is the love of the trueGod that He has shed abroad inour heart. One of the great purposes ofthe Spirits work is to acquaintus with the true God, Jehovah/

Avalon is a new name in guitars but one with an established

history and quality heritage. The company that now bears the

name Avalon Guitars came into being in the 1980s as the Lowden

Guitar Company. Through the years, the companys reputation

for producing the very highest quality acoustic guitars was widely

acknowledged, although production remained small. The highly

skilled team of craftsmen also grew in stature as their experience

and know-how developed. Avalon guitars are all about their

contribution to the acoustic guitar world and their statement

about acoustic guitar design, quality and above all, tone. The very

heart and pure anatomy of todays Avalon guitar is bred from

many years of traditional craftsmanship and love for guitar music.

    Discovering an Avalon guitar is like finding a long-lost friend;

from the moment you meet it feels immediately, comfortable,

reliable and truly rewarding; developing a bond and trust which is

    consistent and always inspirational.

Todays Avalon guitar represents a true heritage that has been

defined by some of the worlds greatest craftsmen and artists. The

Legacy Series, in its Premier Series and Custom Shop derivatives

provide truly peerless quality and performance. That played-in

feel manifests in abundance and underlines the feeling of long-

    standing friendship.

Todays Avalon guitar is the culmination of decades of creativity

and musical excellence; a true representation of the Luthiers art.

    FCC Approves White Spaces,

    'WiFi On Steroids'

by Wendy Davis, Tuesday, Nov 4,

    2008 10:37 PM ET

In a move expected to spur broad-

    band growth, the Federal

    Communications Commis-

    sion voted unanimously

    Tuesday to allow the unli-

censed use of the white space

    spectrum.

    "Opening the white spaces

    will allow for the creation

of a WiFi on steroids," FCC

chair Kevin Martin said in a

    statement issued Tuesday. "It

    has the potential to improve

    wireless broadband connectivity

    and inspire an ever-widening ar-

ray of new Internet based prod-

    ucts and services for consumers."

    Some Web companies, including

    Google and Microsoft, backed the

    plan-- as did broadband access

    advocates. They say that allow-

ing white spaces to be used for

    Internet access will encourage

    companies to create new wire-

    less broadband networks because

    the radio airwaves are powerful

    Ministry Friends,

Ive made a new album that

    is completely different from

    anything youve ever heard from

    me, and maybe than anything

    youve ever heard at all!

    Reign is an ambient music

    backdrop for times of prayer.

    There are six ten-minute tracks

    that can seamlessly flow together

    for an hour-long experience.

Heres how the idea started: I

    noticed that my most fruitful

    prayer times happened when

    my mind was occupied with

    something that didnt take my

full attention. It seemed to keep

    at bay the distracting thoughts

that would intrude- Imhungry! I forgot to write down

    that appointment. Where is

    my phone? My foot hurts.-

these are the little foxes that

spoil the vineyard, as the Song

of Solomon says. So, I thought

of making an hour of music that

is not a collection of songs butis more like aural wallpaper,

and Reign was born. I put it on

in my office and let it play all

day. It reminds me that I have

a spiritual life and that God is

    calling me to Himself.

songs are featured on her debutalbum. She now leads worshipat her church in Charlotte, NC,where she blesses the heartof the countless worshiperswho are touched by her giftand genuine love for God andpeople. One thing that will strike you

a glimmer of hope and fulfillChrist's work as outlined in Luke4:18-19.Melissa was born in West PalmBeach, in sunny South Florida. She was always surrounded bymusic as she grew up listeningto her father playing classicalguitar and directing choir at

her church where she attendedmany concerts. She also enjoyedmany other musical events inthat community. Several of herrelatives, including her aunt, areactively involved in music andshe counts several cousins whoare recording artists in their ownrights.

A ministry hasbeen entrusted into her care andif you listen to her you will beconvinced that this noble causeis hers and you will join her inhelping carry the message to theends of the earth.

    April Underwood Songwriter

    30 Front Yard Worship

    April Underwood is a

    songwriter and director with

Oikeo Music Inc. She says hermom, Patricia, has been the

    greatest encouragement in her

life as a songwriter and as a

    child of God. Patricia listens

to Aprils song ideas and gives

    her positive and spiritual

    input. The most important

thing is just that she listens. So many songwriters do not

have anyone to listen to them.

    Patricia also taught April the

    difference between excellence

    and perfection. When you are

giving the best you can, that is

your worship to God and he

deserves our best. When youstrive for perfection God is left

out of the picture because you

are then striving on your own.

April grew up in church. She

    says that playing keyboard

    and singing in church helped

    her become comfortable in

    front of people. Especially

because in church it isnt about

performing on a stage but its allabout getting into the presence

of God and when that is your

    focus you forget about everyone

else around you. She has been

able to reach another level of

    intimacy with God when she

    is worshiping God through

music. This has allowed her togo to new depths in this special

    relationship, and intimate time

with God. Its very hard to

explain how special it really is

    says April.

This time with God has changed

Aprils life and now she longsto see the music she has written

    help others find that sweet

place with God. It is a blessing

to sing and play the songs you

    have written and see peoples

    lives be transformed through

    the message and music. April

says that songs are built fromexperience, emotions, and

    words. April journals her life

experiences so that she can see

    where God has changed her

and get an idea of how he wants

to work in her. Everyone has

a song of worship, even those

    who arent really writers. And

    now we know through science

that our DNA can literally be

scored and played. It is like afingerprint. Everyones song is

    different because God cares for

    each of us individually.

    When you become strong in

    your relationship with God

    you stop allowing issues to

be a burden, but instead youbecome bold and aware. You

    actively partake of life and

    begin to speak with authority.

Let the devil know that he

cannot have you. He tries to

slap us around but the bible

says to speak to that mountain

that it be cast into the sea. Wemust stop waiting for God to

do things for us and act out our

    faith. Faith in action impacts

    others.

I hope people will listen to the

songs I write and know that

they are not alone. I honestlywant them to know they can

    depend on a higher source

than our world has to offer. I

    have experienced loneliness

and can say that this is a true

    statement. Music isnt just

    about good songs or good

lyrics when you have the Holy

Spirit in you. It is far more

    than that. Music changes the

    atmosphere around you when

it comes from the spirit and

    the deep places where God

takes you. This makes me feellike these experiences are not

    only precious, but useful for

everyone. Then it is lasting, not

    a fad.

I want to always go where

God is telling me to go and do

what he is asking me to do. Iwant to be known for being

obedient. I truly hope that kind

    of relationship comes across in

    the music I write.

April is the winner of the

Beyond Music Conference2008 songwriters contest. She

won with the song I Will

Stand which is a great song

    of testimony on many levels

for April. Youll nd the chart

The Michael Gungor Band,Lisa Gungor, and Johnny

he would like some help typing thelyrics into the computer and savingsong files. You will learn about hisor her heart when working togetheron projects whether they are origi-nal music or not. Eventually youwill build trust and that is when youcan share your music. Most peopledont get far because they are too

    busy thinking of themselves.

Ask around in your church and seeif there are any other writers will-ing to develop a songwriters guildor group. This is a great cell groupformat where thoughts and devo-

tions can be shared along with newsong ideas.

What if it takes off and you haveso many songs but no place to playthem? Isnt that a great problem tohave. One thing we did is organizea fund raiser concert where all oursongwriters presented their musicto a crowd of people supporting the

    food bank.

There are many ways to make yourgroup a win win situation. All youhave to do is put others first andcare about each other. Youll findthat your group becomes family. Wehave. We are spending Christmasweek together at a lodge!

you will have the full attentionof your pastor while communi-cating.

Formulate your thoughts aheadof time so that you can commu-nicate clearly and simply.

Allow your pastor time to pro-cess what youve shared.

In case your vision does not findits way into your pastors heart, spend time in prayer seeking a

    support group.

If your pastor does receive theidea, begin to take notes duringsermons so that you can fullygrasp the vision and heart ofyour pastor.

Your pastor may not be a musi-cian or singer, but he knows

theology. Ask him to check yoursongs for any mistaken ideas orthoughts.

It might be a good idea to ask yourworship pastor if you can start aworship band of your own. Thisis a good way to teach and learnoriginal music without steppingon the toes of other leaders. Dont

ever stop pursuing your goals justbecause one avenue doesnt work. You may have to pioneer the way.It is well worth the effort and thereare more tools available than ever

    before.

What about asking your worshippastor if he needs any help withprojects. If he writes music maybe

    Becoming Useful In Your Church

What is the vision of your church? You may wonder why that is impor-

tant. Writing with the vision of yourchurch in mind can help you beheard when presenting your songs. The bible clearly tells us to edifythe body of Christ in all that we do.As songwriters our goal is to writein and for the environment of thechurch we are serving in. Of coursewe are assuming you understandthere are other important venues

for your music. We are focusing onworship in the church.

It is a good idea to spend sometime getting to knhow your wor-ship pastor and senior pastor beforeyou present your music to them.Having a genuine relationship withthem will help tremendously. Oncethat has been established let your

worship pastor know that you havea vision for original music. Justremember that initially you mayget a hesitant response, but youhave faithful to make the attempt tocommunicate. God will do the restin time.

More than likely all of us haveexperienced that moment when we

barely received a nod of the headwhile expressing our vision. It takestime for ideas to sink into the heartsand minds of those we have com-municated them to.

    Podcast God Space

    38 Front Yard Worship

Hi, my name is Rich Irwin. Ima ministry leader at AnchorageCity Church and these areencouraging words for Artists.God space. I like the word space. My mind thrills with all themeanings and possible varietiesof the word, space. Do we meanthe distance between this thing orthat? Do we mean the large non-life supporting gaps between theplanets? Do we mean the physical

area where all time and matterexist? Like I said, that word is fartoo big to leave alone smashing

around in my fragile little brain.I really like these two wordstogether....God Space. It is so bigit calms me down. Really, everyspace is God space. Here is the thought that makesmy spirit well up and myeyes water. I am God space. 1Corinthians 3:16 Do you not

know that you are a temple ofGod, and that the Spirit of Goddwells in you? Inside of me thereis much more than unfinishedsymphonies. There are largerthings than unknown works.Larger than unseen universes.Inside of me dwells the Spirit ofthe Almighty God. If that doesntshake your core, you are quitepossibly missing the reality of thatscripture.Fellow artists, I want to releasesuch a violently joyful screamright now. It would actually makethose atomic ripples we alwayssee in the movies. REJOICE!REJOICE! Again I say REJOICE!God is not far away. He is notdisgusted by me. God wants tobe so close and so accessible His

Spirit dwells in me! Do you feelthe joy of your salvation? There is God in heaven and Heloves you! Thanks for reading this. You canreach me atAnchorage City Church907-344-2141or email
