It is hard to believe my term as your 2012 Houston BOMAPresident is already coming to anend. Time flies when you’re havingfun. It has been a very busy yearfor Houston BOMA and I haveenjoyed leading this great organiza-tion. In my year as President, I feelthat we have succeeded in reach-ing the goal of making HoustonBOMA fun and relevant. It was a year of records – record atten-dance at the Building Expo, recordfundraising for the BAC PAC andHouston Fire Fighter’s Foundation, and record membership for theorganization. And the great news:we’re showing no signs of slowingdown. I encourage you to becomemore involved and be part of whatI consider to be the best organiza-tion that Houston’s commercialreal estate professionals can turn to for advocacy, industry information, education, networkingand professionalism.
Every fall the board of directorsholds a two day retreat and strate-gic planning session hosted by ourincoming president. This year’sretreat took place in Kemah, andwas great opportunity for the boardto brainstorm and focus on theyear ahead. I am excited to saythat I feel like I’ll be leaving you
in great hands with incomingPresident, Mary Stanton, withJones Lang LaSalle.
Over 500 of you were on handin September for our first-ever jointluncheon with NAIOP, featuringfamed political prognosticator Dr. Larry Sabato. His insights tothis year’s election were interest-ing, entertaining and thought-provoking. I’m sure we will all betuned in on Election Day to seehow his predictions play out.
I saw many of you at the FireFighters Foundation of HoustonGala on September 11, where wepaid tribute to the Houston FireFighters and first responders.Guests were treated to hearingspeaker Donovan Campbell and his incredible tale of courage, leadership and brotherhood as he retold his stories from two toursin Iraq and one in Afghanistan. He drew this comparison betweenMarines and Fire Fighters – “Wereally have the same job. Wheneverybody else is running out, weare running in.” On that note, Iencourage you to continue yoursupport of the Fire Fighters’Foundation. We owe it to them and to our fellow citizens to makesure that they are equipped withthe lifesaving tools that they need.
Although this is my lastPresident’s Message, we still have quite a bit in store for therest of 2012. November 7th bringsus our Second Annual MedicalReal Estate Summit, which will beheld at Memorial Hermann inTexas Medical Center (which, incase you didn’t notice is the dayafter the Presidential Election).Later in the month, we will shiftour mood from election season toanother season – basketball! Joinus to hear from Gretchen Sheirr, the Vice President of Ticket Sales & Services for the HoustonRockets. We will also have theRockets Power Dancers on handfor a fun photo-op. We will round-out the year with our annualHoliday Luncheon, which is always a sell-out.
In an election year that is inherently filled with uncertainty, you can count on the steadfastdedication of Houston BOMA tomake sure that our issues andinterests are being well represent-ed and fought for. It has been mygreat pleasure and honor to repre-sent you as your Houston BOMAPresident, and I look forward to seeing the great heights thisorganization will lead us to in the future. ■
