    Freshman Adjustment Issues

First year college students bring with them high hopes, goals, dreams and even new identities. First se-

mester often triggers high anxieties around academic performance, friendships, and fulfilling ones ex-

pectations. Since students dont know how their professors grade and what is expected of them, they try

their best to figure out how to survive and function best in their classes. While many students thrive on

this challenge, some students exhibit various degrees of adjustment problems.

There are three major areas that students behave that indicate

adjustment problems during first year of college.

is depression during the adjustment phase to college.

Symptoms include loss of concentration, lack of motivation,

increase in sleep or insomnia, weight gain or loss, isolation/

withdrawl, loss of enjoyment in activities they used to, sad-

ness, and agitation at small things. For example, a student

who showed excitement in his classes at first begins to miss

classes, sleep during the day and stay up all night, doesnt feel

hungry, stay inside dorm room, cry for no reasons, and when

he tries to read his book, he cant concentrate.

is pronounced anxiety during the adjustment

phase. Symptoms include chronic worrying, fearful that

whatever he worries about will happen, insomnia from wor-

rying too much before going to sleep, negative thinking, pro-

crastination, loss of concentration, etc. A student who exhibits

a lot of anxiety typically has a lot of energy that cannot be

utilized in a productive way. He creates in his mind false as-

sumptions that he got into college by a mistake and that he

doesnt deserve to be at the college. He believes he will fail

and repeats negative thoughts of failure, distracting him from

homework and readings he must complete. Highly anxious

student believes hes the only one who feels like a fake and

that he will not succeed. He does not test out these assump-

tions but tends to believe them. Anxiety triggers increased

    procrastination and terribly low self-confidence.

problem is a mixture of depressive symptoms with

anxiety. Students cycle between feelings like they dont want

to do anything to feeling like they cant do anything because

their work is too late and cant think of how to get out of the

    mess theyve created.

If any of the three adjustment problems persist for more than

two weeks, it is important for the student to seek his advisor,

professor, or a counselor. When a student approaches for help,

advisor/professor/counselor can act as the student advocate

and help the student to solve his problems. By disclosing what

is going on with him, he is no longer alone in carrying all the

    burdens.

At the college counseling services, I have seen and worked with

many students who experience some adjustment problems. It

is natural for students to face some difficulties getting used

to a whole new environment. However, it turns into a terrible

problem when students dont seek help early on to resolve their

depressive and/or anxious feelings that interfere with social

and work life at college. What I have noticed in particular is

that while White students self-refer for help early on, Korean

students do not self-refer for help. In fact, Asian students tend

to want to solve difficulties on their own which in turn becomes

a secret. Many of the Korean students felt that they must be

the only one having this trouble and expressed deep shame and

    embarrassment.

For example, a Korean American freshman became depressed

during spring semester and hardly attended his classes. He

did not seek help at school and he did not disclose his troubles

with his parents. The parents assumed their son was doing

well at school and kept sending tuition money and spend-

ing money to him. At the end of the school year, the dean at

the school called the students parents informing them that

the student had failed all of his classes and that he will not

be allowed to return. Not surprisingly, parents were shocked

by this information and asked their son what had happened.

The son reluctantly admitted that he was depressed and didn

t want to burden anyone with his problems including his par-

ents. He said he just slept all day and played video games on

the computer, hardly leaving his dorm room. He also fooled

his friends by telling them that he was attending classes and

that he was doing fine. No one suspected what was going on

    with this student.

As much as wed like for our children to be independent and

take good care of themselves, it is important for us to teach

our children how to seek help and not keep things as secrets.

I walk into a modern building, guess where I am! Im at a Chelsea

gallery, where abstract ar t is, which is a splattering kind of ar t, that

is not straight forward kind of ar t. The reason why I like galleries

especially in Chelsea is because its all unique and interesting, the ar t.

If you saw the ar twork youll be like, WOOOOW!! I personally

think that even though these paintings didnt have an EXACT

definition it told something that is uncommon which is fun because us,

kids like fun and hilarious. I believe that these ar tists liked remarkable

and I dont blame them at all because I loooooove remarkable!! Dont

you like remarkable, it makes everything in colors because normal is like

black and white young people like us and teens want color! I cer tainly,

definitely want color with my TRUE hear t!

    !

fter our stop at Tainergy, our tour of Taipei began.

For the next three days, we got to experience Taipei to

the fullest. From falling in love with the art of Chen Chi-

Kwan at the National Palace Museum, to traveling back

in time to 1950s~70s Taiwan in the interactive museum,

Taiwan Storyland or just sitting down for a break from

the heat, eating Taiwanese-style /, it was a time

of non-stop fun and an unforgettable cultural experience.

One night as we were sitting outside on the streets of a

night market eating stinky tofu, a Taiwanese staple dish

that can be found in any night market, Kevin opened

up about how it feels like to go from college boy to

businessman, of what it feels like to be a father now. I

try to be young inside, but you still need to face reality

about your family, your kids, your wife, your parents,

your work...so its hard to be young again. You take more

responsibility for everyone else, except for yourself...Being

a father its a new life, but still Im just waiting for my

daughter to grow up because so far, she doesnt like me

too much (big, childish laughter). Because we are weekend

parents, we dont get to see her normally...So we cannot

have too much interaction together. I hope one day she can

understand, because I think half of Taiwanese parents all

have to work...its not something you can choose. When I

asked Kevin what it means then, to be a good father, or to

be a good son, heres what he had to say: As a son, obey.

Just obey your father (more laughter). And as a father, try

to teach your son to be successful. This doesnt mean you

want your son to take over the family business or not, but

you want him to be successful. So, you need to teach him to

be successful in business or family.

As we wrapped up our pungent late-night snack, Kevin

gave my brothers and me some sound, brotherly words of

wisdom. He said, Once you have a wife or a husband, you

re not your parents kids only. Youre someones husband,

someones wife. More factors combined together means it

becomes more difficult to satisfy everyone. Maybe your

Mom wants you to move near her. Maybe your wife wants

to move somewhere else...So, while you can, try to make

your parents happy. Do not be American-thinking. Try to

keep some Korean concept as much as you can. Its tough

to balance the Korean way and the American way, but you

    should try. Treat them well.

Throughout this trip, I couldnt help but be grateful for and

inspired by the warm hospitality of our Taiwanese friends

Kevin, his family, and our other Taiwanese friends we

were able to get in touch with through Kevin. I wonder if

my impression of Taiwan could have been any better had

I just visited here by myself or through a random tour and

travel agency. It is truly amazing, I realized, what simple but

powerful joys sincerity of friendship can bring...Perhaps Im

being overly sentimental, but it is truly humbling to reflect

how often we dont build but superficial relationships with the

people in our daily lives. I hope that it has not yet become an

anomaly, a sign of weakness, in this day and age, to lament

at the lost potential for genuine happiness to be shared

amongst potential friends and to yearn for true, lasting,

human friendships with the power to overcome barriers of

language and ethnicity and even distance and time. Mom&I Campus Reporter, Jeong-Wong Shin | Mom&I
