What: Information on Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment Programs

When: Tuesday, January 15 from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m.

Where: Millard West Auditorium

For Whom: Parents and Students interested in knowing more about these two important programs

We will also give information on AP testing: the benefits, the costs and the timelines. Information will also be provided about UNO’s Dual Enrollment program including benefits, costs and timelines. We encourage any interested parent and student to come to this infor-mation session to find out more about these worthwhile programs.

Dual Enrollment Opportunities Millard West 2012-2013

Students taking specified Advanced Placement Courses are given the opportunity to dual enroll for college credit as well as high school credit. Currently Millard Public Schools is working with the University of Nebraska at Omaha. UNO determines which of Millard’s courses align with their college curriculum and which of Millard’s teachers qualify as adjunct professors. Only those courses and teachers approved by UNO offer the option of dual enrollment credit. Students must have a cumulative GPA of a 3.0 or greater in order to qualify for dual enrollment credit. Students must also sign up for dual enrollment credit concurrently with enrollment in the corresponding Millard course. Students will not be allowed to retroactively pay for dual enrollment credit. Enrollment requirements are set by UNO and may be changed by them prior to any registration period. Students will earn credit from UNO and will need to have a transcript from UNO sent to the university they plan on attending. As with all transfer credit, the attending universities decide if and how they accept the transfer credit from UNO. It is recommended that students call the attending college and ask about the acceptance of the specific transfer credit before enrolling in the dual enrollment course. If a student is enrolling in a science or math program, the attending university will generally not accept dual enrollment credit in science and math. Most dual enrollment credits will transfer as general required courses rather than as major-specific course work. Students should call the admission’s office at the university they are planning on attending to check for specific information on transfer credit acceptance. All Advanced Placement Courses offer Advanced Placement Testing through the College Board each spring. All students enrolled in AP courses are expected to take the corresponding AP exams. Students may qualify for college credit depending on the grade they earn on the exam(s) and the university they are attending. A list of Advanced Placement credits granted by all colleges/universities is available at:

http://collegesearch.collegeboard.com/apcreditpolicy/index.jsp UNO’s Enrollment Process

A UNO representative will visit the dual enrollment courses two weeks prior to the registration deadline. Students are then to turn in their registrations to the Millard West Administration Office within the two week window. The cost for each course, each semester will be $250 whether it is for a three-credit, four-credit, or five-credit class. Millard West will send the registrations to UNO. Each parent/student will receive a bill from the University and will pay UNO directly. No money should be given to Millard West. The $250 fee is a significant reduction in the normal tuition for a UNO class. UNO dual-enrolled students are required to take the AP test in May; however, UNO will pay for the AP exam costs (an $89 cost per exam in the spring of 2013) in the dual-enrolled subject. By turning in the enrollment forms, the parent/student is agreeing to a financial obligation and agreement with UNO. All of UNO’s policies apply. Students must pass the dual enrollment course with a grade of C or better to earn college credit. The grading scale will be the same as for all Millard classes. Grade weighting for advanced placement classes is for Millard’s GPA purposes only and does not apply to the UNO grade report. If you have questions, please feel free to contact Mr. Bob Lamberty or Micki Zoucha at Millard West at 715-6001. For UNO specific questions, please contact Ms. Kelly Malone of the UNO Academic Affairs Office at 554-3810 or e-mail her at:

MILLARD CAREER ACADEMY

Attention Sophomore Students and Parents Students will soon finalize course selections for the last two years of high school and it is important to use these years to prepare for post-secondary plans. One way to be prepared is to participate in a Millard career Academy. The Culinary Skills, Education, Entrepreneurship, Health Sciences and Distribution and Logistics Management Academies enhance the many opportunities available to Millard students and help students prepare for college and/or a career. During their Junior and Senior years, academy participants attend their assigned high school half of each day and travel to the academy the remaining half-day. Academy participants earn 40 credits per year toward high school graduation and have the option to earn college credit at a reduced tuition rate through Metropolitan Community College and University of Nebraska at Omaha. This is a great way to explore a career, learn with a cohort group of students and gain experience in a career field. To learn more about the academy opportunities, attend the parent information meeting and academy open house where you will meet academy teachers and students currently enrolled in each academy. The Career Academy website is http://mps.mpsomaha.org/academies.

We have voracious readers at West, both students and staff. That’s what makes it exciting for the library staff! Students can find the new Millard Reads list on the library website link.

We’re also very big on technology, and enjoy helping students through the intricacies of software and hardware use. It is a very good idea for all students to invest in a flash drive for project storage. PARENT POWER!!!!

How To Explain to Your Teen Why You Don’t Want Him/Her

Drinking or Using Drugs

Kids who learn a lot about the risks of drugs and alcohol from their parents are up to 50% less likely to use than those who do not.

Don’t want your teen drinking or using drugs? Tell him how you feel and what you expect from him. Be warm but firm. For example, you might say:

"“I’m not trying to ruin your fun. I love you and I want you to stay healthy. The best way to do that is to stay completely away from drugs and alcohol. I need you to promise that you will."

"‘I realize there's a lot of temptation out there. I also know you're a really smart, strong person. That's why I expect you to stay clean — no matter what your friends are doing. Agreed?"

"“There's a lot of new science about teens, drugs and alcohol. It scares me to know how easily you could damage your brain or get addicted. I want your word that you'll steer clear of all that, and keep me in the loop on the kids you hang out with, too." (www.drugfree.org/teenbrain)

Research shows that when parents talk openly about drugs and drinking, children have better self-control and develop more negative perceptions of these risky behaviors. (www.drugfree.org/prevent)

Fast Facts Parents Need to Know About……

Teen Parties

i 1/3 of teen partygoers report that parents are rarely or never present at the parties they attend.

i Alcohol is 16 times likelier to be available and marijuana is 29 times likelier to available at parties where parents are NOT present.

i 1/3 of teen partygoers have attended parties where teens were drinking alcohol, smoking pot, or using cocaine, ecstasy, or prescription drugs while a parent WAS present.

Nebraska Law States: It is illegal for anyone to provide or sell alcohol to persons under age 21. If you know of minors consuming alcohol or adults providing alcohol to those under the age of 21 then make the right call: 1-866-MUST-B-21. It’s anonymous and could save someone’s life. “A child who reaches age 21 without smoking, abusing alcohol, or using drugs is virtually certain to never do so.” Joseph Califano, Jr. (President of the Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse)

GUIDANCE NEWS

Academic Support at Millard West When students are taking courses that stretch their academic skills and challenge them to new levels of thinking, they sometimes become frustrated when the answers are not clear and immediate. As educators, however, we know that these are instances in which students are growing and developing as learners and thinkers. If your student is becoming frustrated or panicked due to academic challenges, the key is to seek support early rather than spending weeks in panic mode or waiting until the end of the semester to address the concern. There are a number of resources available at Millard West to support your student in working through these challenges. x Tuesday/Thursday After School Study Center in the Info. Center from 3:30 - 5:30 p.m. x Individual Help with the Student's Teacher Before or After School as Available x Tutor From the National Honor Society - See Mrs. Zohlen in Guidance to inquire about this possi-

bility. x Study Hall scheduled into school day x Course level change if student is misplaced academically x Visit with our Academic Counselor, Mrs. Zohlen, to discuss concerns.

Naviance for Parents Parents: Be sure to sign up for your Naviance account today. A personal Naviance account gives you access to career and college information that is helpful to both you and your student. Parents are also able to click on Updates on the lower right hand side of the welcome page and find communication of area activities that promote career and college awareness with live links, email addresses and web sites. Also on the welcome page are links to the Millard Curriculum Guide, Education Quest, NCAA information and Millard Academy information. Contact Brenda Cary [email protected] in the Guidance Office for log-in information. Send her an e-mail with your student’s name and she will send you your registration information.

Signs of Depression/Suicide Education In November, all students will participate in activities that educate them on the signs of depression and pro-vide information regarding suicide prevention. These activities will be led by school counselors. Ninth grade students will attend a presentation by the group R.E.S.P.E.C.T. called Reporting. Tenth, eleventh and twelfth grade students will watch a video about the signs or depression and suicide. Students will also be provided a wallet size card with hotline numbers. As part of this activity, counselors will administer a three question questionnaire to determine if students are currently experiencing signs of depression or self-harm.

If there is any need for parent contact after students participate in these activities, a counselor will follow up with parents. If you choose to opt your student out of these activities or need further information, please con-tact the guidance office.

ACTIVITIES AND ATHLETICS WINTER ATHLETICS Winter sports are right around the corner, with practices beginning on Monday, Novem-ber 12th. Sports offered are boys and girl’s basketball, boys and girls swimming and diving, and wrestling. Any student, who is planning on participating in winter sports, and not already competing in a fall sport, must have a physical and parent consent form on file in the activities office in order to practice and check out equipment. There is a one time $60.00 participation fee required of all participants who try out. This fee is non-refundable –included is a student activity pass, good at all West High athletic events. At the time all permission slips and fees are turned in to the activities office, the student will receive a participation card, which is their ticket to participate. Students completing a fall sport will be given back their card after they check in gear. The same card is needed for a winter or spring sport. All forms are available in the activi-ties office. ATHLETICS FOR THE 2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR All students and parents are reminded that in order to participate in interscholastic athletics, all students must do the following:

1. The Nebraska State Athletic Association has two check points for eligibility to participate in interscholas-tic athletics. The checkpoints are in January and August. The rules state that a student must pass a minimum of 20 credits during the prior two terms, i.e. a student participating in a winter or spring sport must have passed a minimum of 20 credit hours from August through December. Millard West students must be enrolled in a minimum of two classes in each nine week term and we strongly recom-mend a minimum of three courses and encourage students to register for four classes each nine weeks.

2. Have a physical exam by a licensed physician after May 1, 2012 and have the required forms completed.

3. Complete the student Participation/required forms, complete the Emergency Card, plus the Transportation Form. Turn them into the Millard West Activities Office.

4. Millard Public Schools has an annual non refundable participation fee of $60.00 for each student

participating in NSAA sponsored interscholastic competitions. All students participating who have paid the $60.00 fee receive the Millard West student athletic admission pass and a participation card. .

All forms are available in the Millard West Activities Office. They may be picked up Monday through Friday from 7:30 A.M. to 3:45 P.M. They will also be available on our website under Activities. When all of the above steps have been completed and filed in the activities office...each student will be issued an Athletic Participation Card, which verifies that they have met all requirements for participation in athletics. Each student must give their Participation Card to their respective coach when checking out for their first practice. NO STUDENT MAY PRACTICE OR CHECK OUT EQUIPMENT UNTIL THEIR PARTIC-IPATION CARD IS TURNED INTO THEIR COACH. PLEASE! Don’t put off getting your physical or completing and turning in the necessary forms. Get them turned in well ahead of the first scheduled practice. A NEW PARTICIPATION CARD IS REQUIRED ANNUALLY FOR PARTICIPATION IN ATHLETICS.
