 ABOUT THE COURSE

Fine art as a subject responds

to the constant evolution o

global issues and culture.

The structure and contento the BA (Hons) Fine Art

course at NUCA empowers

 you to make meaningul

contributions to society

through your engagement

with your practice. Successul

completion o the course will

enable you to pursue fne art ina proessional or postgraduate

environment and will enhance

 your potential or employment

within the expanding range

o creative industries.

The course is structured

around three studio areas:Painting, Print & New Media,

and Sculpture. The range o

subjects within these areas

includes drawing, painting,

perormance, object making,

photography, installation,

etching, screenprinting,

photographic processes,wood construction, metalwork,

modeling, carving, mould

making, casting, sound,

video and Photoshop.

You will acquire skills based

in many o these elds

and throughout the courseyou’ll be encouraged to use

methodology appropriate

to the concepts you are

developing and the media

you are working with.

The interplay between subject

areas is fexible, allowing

you to vary your practice.

 A programme o lectures,

seminars and proessional

practice workshops areintegrated with studio practice,

resulting in a sophisticated

and comprehensive learning

experience. Signicantly

all course sta, whether

permanent or visiting, are

themselves practising artists.

The course also invites majorartists, critics and theorists

o national and international

standing to give talks and

seminars in order to add

richness to the programme.

This, combined with strong

sta and student involvement

in internationally recognised

organisations such as EAST

International, Sainsbury

Centre or Visual Arts and

Outpost Gallery, provide

an enviable context or

proessional development.

In recent years we have

LEVEL ONE

Level One introduces you to the

course and its resources and

begins to establish individual

studio practice in a challenging,critical environment.

The emphasis at Level One

is on the acquisition and

understanding o the skills,

methodologies and conceptual

ramework within studio areas,

the adjustment to degree-

level study, the questioning o

the unctions and institutions

associated with fne art practice

and the idea o fne art as

a means o communication

establishing the oundation or

your own personal enquiry.

You may participate in anoptional study visit. Recent

destinations include Paris,

 Amsterdam, Venice and Berlin.

LEVEL TWO

In Level Two you will develop

a deeper appreciation othe content and context

o your work and will be

exposed to the reactions and

interpretations o others as

the relationship between work

and audience is introduced.

The curriculum is designed

to provoke responses rom

you, which can be shared

with the whole o your year

group. A growing awareness o

proessionalism is engendered

throughout the year.

Increasingly you will be required

to articulate the content o your

work and how you position it

in relation to contemporary

and historical practices within

fne art. There are distinctlearning and teaching methods

employed at Level Two to

provide dierent settings

or orums within which to

explore these issues: through

student-led seminars and

group critiques and through a

public exhibition o your work.

LEVEL THREE

Level Three o the course is the

culmination o your study.

The emphasis is on developing

your studio work towards

an exhibition or the fnalassessment and producing a

signifcant body o research

and writing. The fnal exhibition

sees the completion o the

course: this is a major event

where you will have the

opportunity to exhibit your work

in the same excellent spaceused by EASTInternational

during the summer months.

 As part o the exhibition Level

Three students work together

to produce a publication to

accompany the show.

 Attended by curators,collectors, art buyers,

business and the public, this

showcase event is a major

opportunity to promote yoursel

and start your career.

HOW TO APPLY

QUALIFICATIONS AND

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

The majority of applicantswill be invited to attend an

interview. This is an invaluable

chance for us to meet you

face to face and is the major

factor in determining the

success of your submission.

The interview gives us the

opportunity to assess yourwork and the suitability of your

application and also provides

you with a chance to assess

our staff, campus and facilities

and ask questions of us.

The key focus of your

application process is onyour portfolio. As a minimum

both Foundation and Honours

Degree courses require

applicants to have 240 tariff

points, including the equivalent

of two C grades at GCE

 Advanced level supported by

passes in four other subjects at

GCSE level (grade C or above).

Year 0 entry requires a

minimum of 200 tariff points

with at least 2 A2 (A-level)

qualifications required.

 A Foundation Diploma in Art

and Design is often a valuable

additional qualification.

National Diploma or GNVQ

Level 3 courses are alsorecognised entry qualifications.

PORTFOLIOS

You will be expected to bring

a portfolio of your creative

work with you. It is important

that you spend time creating

a well presented and thought-out portfolio. Please bear in

mind the following guidelines:

– Your portfolio should be

presented in a logical

and ordered manner

– It is important to include

a range of work andhighlight particular interests

that demonstrate your

suitability for the course

you have applied for

– The interview panel will be

equally interested in seeing

sketchbooks and notebooksas well as finished work

– Large pieces of work may

be shown as photographs

– Film, video and animation

work should be no more

than 5-10 minutes long

– You should include examples

of your written work. Some

courses specifically require

evidence of essays or

there are deadlines for UCAS

Consideration of late

submissions will depend on

the number of applications

and the take up of offers in

that given year. Offers aremade on the basis of merit.

you have used all five options

already, UCAS Extra enables

INTERVIEWS

International applicants are

not expected to travel to the

UK for an interview but can

request this if they wish. As an

alternative the interview can

also take place by telephone,

e-mail or post, at the discretion

of the Course Leader. As part

of the process, students are

required to submit a portfolio

of work. International studentscan supply their portfolios

at any time of the year in any

number of different formats.

These include sending digital

prints, slides, photographs

or CD ROMs of the work,

or by directing us to an

online portfolio. You will also

need to provide examples

of your written work.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS

 All lectures, seminars and

tutorials are delivered in

English, therefore it is importantfor you to have a good level of

English to be able to enjoy and

benefit from our courses.

For our undergraduate courses

we require IELTS 6.0 (academic

module), or equivalent.

Other applicants who can

demonstrate fluency withoutan academic qualification

will also be considered.

STUDENT FINANCE

TUITION FEES LOAN

New UK* or EU students no

longer need to pay tuition feesupfront as they will be eligible

for a Tuition Fees Loan.

This loan covers the cost of

their course and will be paid

directly to the University 

College by the Student

Loan Company. Students

will only start to repay this

loan once they have left

the University College and

are earning over £15,000.

Students are not required to

take out this loan and should

they wish to can pay their fees

at the start of their course.

Norwich University College of

the Arts will charge all new UK

and EU students applying for

their first undergraduate degree

£3,290 for 2010-11 full-time

courses. Fees for 2011 will

be available on our websitewhen they have been set.

Financial support may be

available to help with the cost

of your studies and further

information can be found below.

For students who are applying

for an award which is the

equivalent or lower level than

a degree they already hold,

Norwich University College

of the Arts will have to charge

more than the standard tuition

fees for those entering in

2011 and beyond. This mayalso affect your eligibility

for financial support.

STUDENT

MAINTENANCE LOAN

This loan helps with living costs

such as accommodation, food,

clothes, travel and courseexpenses. This loan is available

to new and existing eligible

UK* students and the amount

students receive is dependent

on household income and any

Maintenance Grant received.

 A student not receiving aMaintenance Grant, living

outside London and not living

with their parents will be able to

borrow up to £4,950 whereas

those who live with their

parents will be able to borrow

up to £3,838. 72% of the loan

amount is available to all eligiblestudents and is not income

assessed. The remaining

28% will be dependent

on household income.

STUDENT

MAINTENANCE GRANT

New full-time undergraduate

students from lower income

households are able to apply fora non-repayable Maintenance

Grant of up to £2,906 a year.

– If the household income is

£25,000 or less students will

receive a Maintenance Grant

– If family income is above

£25,001 and below

£50,020 students will

receive a partial grant.

The Maintenance Grant is paid

in three instalments, at the

beginning of each term, directly

into students’ bank accounts.

Students in receipt of the

Student Maintenance Grant

are also entitled to the Norwich

University College of the Arts

Bursary as well as being eligible

for the Tuition Fees Loan and

the Student Maintenance Loan.

The University College will

offer non-repayable bursariesto full-time undergraduate

students who are entitled

to the government Student

Maintenance Grant. The

amount

students are entitled to will

be dependant on how much

government support theyreceive as set out below.

BURSARY RULES

FOR 2010-11

There are two sets of rules

depending on which of the

following categories you fall into:Category 1

For Year 0, Year One and

Year Two students.

For Year Three students.

If the Maintenance Grant is:

Students do not have to apply

for the Bursary as this will be

automatically calculated based

on the information provided

in their application for the

Student Maintenance Grant.

The Bursary is paid in the

February following registration

with the University College, if

students are in attendance.Students should note that the

NUCA bursary is an annual

award and will be reduced

proportionately for students

who do not complete a full year

of study and leave subsequent

to the payment date.

STUDENT ACCOMMODATION

UNIVERSITY MANAGED

 ACCOMMODATION

We offer a range of self-cateringaccommodation for students,

both in Halls of Residence and

purpose built fully furnished

student houses, all of which

are within easy access of the

University College. All rooms

are furnished single bedrooms

grouped around shared facilities.Rents for 2009/10 ranged

between £80 and £100 a week.

We cannot guarantee a place in

our accommodation for all first

year students. Our allocation

procedure prioritises international

students, UK students farfrom home and those with

medical or disability issues.

PRIVATE RENTED

 ACCOMMODATION

There is an ample supply of

reasonably priced accommodation

in Norwich. This includes

rooms, flats and houses rented

from private landlords.

Our Student Support team are

happy to help students find

rented accommodation. The

service offered includes:

– Advice and guidance at the

University College’s Open Days

– Weekly updated list of house/ 

flat share accommodation

with other students

– A brochure ‘Living in the

Community’ produced in

collaboration with UEA andCity College Norwich

STUDENT SUPPORT

Students may receive help

and support with a rangeof educational, practical,

personal and financial matters

to ensure an enjoyable and

rewarding experience at

the University College.

Programmes include welfare

assistance, counselling,help with accommodation

You may be affected by various

issues and difficulties in

your academic and personal

life, especially if living away

from home for the first time.

Staff are available to offer

support and guidance, which

includes practical help and

information on finance, tuition

fees, student loans, hardship

funds and benefits, as well as

confidential support and advicefor more personal difficulties.

We offer a confidential and

free counselling service easily

accessible to all students.

This service is provided

by The Norwich Centre.

The University College

also provides dyslexia

 All applications are considered

on academic criteria but

students are encouraged to

 ACADEMIC REGISTRY

The Academic Registry is

responsible for the academic

administration including

admissions, student records,

confirming assessment marks

and organising the final awards

of students’ qualifications. It is

also required to collate a wide

range of statistical data and

reports to a number of external

organisations. The Academic

Registry also provides advice

to students and staff on

all aspects of the StudentRegulation and Procedures.

SHOP

Your course may require you to

have access to art materials.

 A shop is available which sells

a good range of basic and

some specialist art suppliesat competitive prices.
