› The top Japanese universities launched opencoursewares in May 2005: University of Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Tokyo Tech, Keio, Waseda, Kyushu, Hokkaido, Nagoya.

› Motivated by the ideals of intellectual philanthropy.

› All believe in concrete benefits to their own institutions.

› Major hurdles include funding, intellectual property, recruiting faculty to contribute material, and coordination among the alliance universities.
