Machining and Molding Section

To provide a material with a form (processing) means to build up mechanical, electromagnetic, and optical characteristics in the material. This section engages in a wide range of processing types, such as removal processing (machining, electric processing, and laser processing), deforming (plastic forming and plastics molding), and adding (metal layer forming) and in this way supports manufacturing activities. Particularly, under keywords such as difficult-to-grind materials, micro fabrication, surface improvement, environmental harmonization, manufacturing of a wide variety of products in small quantities, micro forming, etc., this section sets out micro fabrication and complex processing of PCD molds, local alloying process by laser, press forming of fuel cell separators, and metal RP forming of low-elasticity and high-strength artificial bones. Meanwhile, with regard to post-process product evaluation technology, we conduct activities such as precision measurement (dimension, shape, roughness), material testing of plastics (tensile, bending, and compression), observation and element analysis by a scanning type electron microscope and non-destructive inspection by an X-ray CT introduced last year as well. We are ready for consultation on a variety of processing issues. (We can also visit your site for your convenience.)

This device is equipped with functions of micro electric discharge machining, grinding, and micro tool forming, which enables processing of ultra-fine (less than several µm) holes and grooves.

By use of this device, it is possible to obtain high-quality and high-resolution sectional pictures with a non-destructive method. (The inner structure of a capacitor can be seen clearly.)

Metallic Materials Section

This section provides technical support in all fields of manufacturing by use of metallic materials, from raw material forming, manufacturing and processing, and treatment technology, as well as evaluation, including melting, casting, special jointing, heat treatment to machine elements (screws) technology, product strength evaluation, and tribology-related technology. Our technical support extends from tests and analysis to material development through processing and heat treatment as well as evaluation technology, while at the same time conducting technical research and development for such new manufacturing technology. Last year, we introduced a constant-temperature and constant-humidity booth and a field-emission transmission electron type electronic probe micro analyzer, which enabled us to offer open facilities and equipment and accept requested tests as well. We are now ready to serve you.

Thanks to the constant-temperature and constant-humidity booth, the test environmental condition becomes constant, which enables reliable evaluation of friction and wearing characteristics.

This device is an element analyzer utilizing an electron beam, which is particularly effective for analyzing a tiny fragment or a small local part of a material.

Metal Finishing and Analysis Section

This section is in a technical field of metal analysis, surface improvement, plating, corrosion prevention, and new energy, and involves composition analysis and measurement of structure and hardness of metallic materials, chemical analysis and local part analysis of surfaces, and corrosion testing and electro-chemical evaluation of metallic products and surface-treated products. In addition, we conduct research and development, such as development of rigid dry coating film and wet plating film, practical application of plasma surface treatment, development of thermal spray film, development of electrodes through electrolytic treatment, and research for sophistication of metal analysis, and we support manufacturing activities through supply of new surface treatment technology, support for process upgrading, supply of highly precise analysis data, and so on. We are ready to consult about engineering issues such as quality control and corrosion troubles of metal products, development of products related to surface phenomena, characterization of surfaces, and material composition analysis.

This is a device for analyzing the element of pole surfaces and inspecting oxidized conditions and depth distribution. It can be utilized for chemical condition analysis and development with regard to catalysts, plating, bonding, and corrosion.

An example of development of an electrode catalyst used in a plating method. In spite of the process being simple and employing an infinitesimal quantity of platinum, superb hydrogen developmental ability is realized.

Introduction of specialized sections (4) Control Engineering and Electronic Materials Section

This section is in technical fields such as vacuum and thin film materials, semiconductor micro fabrication processing, micro electro mechanical systems (MEMS) technology, nano-micro devices, electronic control, and mechatronics, and provides technical consultation, contracted processing, equipment rental, and on-the-spot consultation. With regard to research and development, we are conducting a series of developments such as sophisticated thin-film material development and innovative organic transistors and nano-micro devices utilizing MEMS technology, and proactively implementing coordination with enterprises, universities, etc. and national projects. This fiscal year, we will propose technical support with consistent and comprehensive manufacturing technology through thin film material development, production of fine processing devices, a signal treatment system, and built-in technology up to development of a prototype machine.

Introduction of specialized sections (5) Product Reliability and Human Life Science Section

This section provides technical support in three fields; namely a field of EMC and reliability of electricity and lighting, a field of reliability of transportation and packing as well as vibration and impact, and finally a field utilizing an artificial meteorologic room and an anechoic chamber, measurement of biologic reaction, and static electricity. As for research and development, we are conducting research such as basics of evaluation of LED lighting, reduction of troubles caused by vibration and impact on transportation, bedsore preventive bedclothes, easy-to-hear sound signal, and human electrostatic charge, for aspects closely related to safe and secure daily life. In addition, from this fiscal year, we have started new tests and consultation on lighting, such as measurement of total luminous flux by an integrating sphere. We are anticipating your utilization for performance evaluation toward development of LED lights.

There are test rooms such as an artificial meteorologic room where various meteorologic conditions can be duplicated, an anechoic chamber in which there are no reflected sounds, and additionally a pressurizing and depressurizing room and a variable temperature room.

This equipment is a device for evaluating optical performance (total luminous flux and spectral distribution) which is inevitable for development of LED lighting equipment and so on.

Environment and Chemistry Section

This section provides technical consultation, requested tests, equipment utilization, contracted research such as analysis of environmental chemical substances and trace metals, accelerated weather tests and evaluation of polymer materials, etc., evaluation of antibiotic properties, composition, evaluation and processing of structural and functional ceramics and nano-carbon, etc., burning test of fuel and so on, as well as technology for effective use of wastes. With regard to research and development, we are pursuing such items as reliability improvement of analysis of inorganic metallic ions, development of environmentally harmonized materials (environment purifying catalyst, highly heat-resistant polymer nano-filter materials and fine particles), analysis methods for various plastic additive agents, analysis methods for foreign materials of biologic origin, development of new intermetallic compounds and nano-carbon complex materials, and research related to utilization of effective energy of waste etc., as well as cooperative research with enterprises, universities, and so on. Furthermore, at technical courses, various seminars and research presentations on utilization of equipment such as a scanning transmission electron microscope with a function to correct spherical aberration, we will introduce applicable technology and installed equipment in this section, and thus we will proactively respond to enterprises’ requirements. Textile and Polymer Section

This section consists of a textile field and a polymer field, and is conducting evaluation of material performance on textile materials, organic materials, polymer materials, and bonding and pressure-sensitive adhesion, as well as requested tests and technical consultation on material analysis based on organic chemicals and other work. With regard to research and development, we, together with enterprises and universities, are energetically working on development of organic optical and electronic devices, recyclable pressure-sensitive and bonding adhesive, environmental materials from disposed waste utilization and so on, and technical development of carbon nanotube thread with high performance. In addition, through opening of practical lecture meetings on the basics of trouble-cause analysis techniques on the basis of actual examples and various analysis apparatus application techniques including practices, we support personal development in a wide range of business fields.

Utilizing EDX (mainly for inorganic substances) and FT-IR (mainly for organic substances), we conduct performance evaluation and analysis of various materials.

By mixing three colors; i.e., Red-1, Green-1, and Blue-1, the property CIE (0.34, 0.37); average color rendering property evaluation value 94; and color temperature 5,500K were achieved. By use of an emitting material with high luminescent quantum efficiency, we are manufacturing surface-emitting type thin film emitting elements which are applicable to display and light.

This section is providing guidance, consultation, and testing and research to support development, fabrication, popularization, and sales of secure, safe, and reliable leather and fur products to consumers. Particularly, we are responding to cause investigation and countermeasures against claims on leather and fur products. We are also conducting information transmission and personal development through the Leather Consumption Scientific Research Institute

Responding to the necessity of proper quality labeling, we are effectively using this device on non-destructive inspection of raw materials such as leather and hair as well as color change and attached foreign materials.

Duties Promotion Section (Information & communication field)

This section (information and communication field) supports TRI’s maintenance and control of TRI’s network basis, development of information systems, and development of production control programs for small and medium enterprises, and supports in-house and outside customers on utilization of PCs up to building-up of server systems and security measures. We are promoting TRI’s information technology further through development of the in-house operation system, always applying cutting-edge network technology and programming technology, and aiming to transfer the resultant know-how to small and medium enterprises.
