“한길가는인생” (A Life on the Same Path)

열왕기상2:1-4

Happy Mother's Day! 이 땅의 모든 어머니들에게 주님의 은총과 복을 기도합니다. 어머니를

그리워하는 모든 이들에게 주님의 위로가 함께 하기를 기도합니다. 어머니라는 이름에서 위로를 찾을 수 없는

이들이 모두 주님 안에서 따뜻한 품을 발견하게 되기를 기도합니다 Happy Mother’s Day! I pray that God’s grace and blessings be with all the mothers on earth! I also pray that God’s comfort may be with those of you who are missing your mother’s embrace. For those who can’t find comfort from their mother’s embrace, I pray that they may find God’s warm embrace in its place.

우리 말에 ‘명가’(名家)라는 말이 있습니다. ‘이름 있는 가문’이라는 뜻입니다. 이름이 없는 가문이

어디에 있겠습니까만, 오래도록 좋은 전통을 이어가는 것으로 인해 존경받는 가문을 일컫는 말입니다.

There's a Korean word, ‘Myung Ga’ which means a “reputable family”. There is no family without a

name, but it stands for a respected family who has kept a good heritage and reputation over a long period.

유럽에는 한 가지의 직업을 오백년 넘게 이어오는 명가 들이 많다고 합니다. 포도주로 유명한 명가도

있고, 치즈로 유명한 명가도 있으며, 가구를 만드는 것으로 유명한 명가도 있습니다. 일본도 마찬가지라고

하지요. 조상들이 대를 이어 온 직업을 귀중하게 여겨서 한 눈 팔지 않고 그 직업을 이어가는 명가들이 많다고

합니다.

It is known that there are many “reputable families” in Europe which has kept one profession in the

family for more than 500 years. Some families are well known for wine, some for cheese, or some for furniture. The same is true in Japan. Many families in Japan have passed down the same trade from generation to generation, each younger generation valuing the profession inherited from their ancestors as something precious and worthy to carry on.

반면, 우리 나라는 공부해서 출세하는 것을 제일로 여기는 사고방식 때문에 명가의 맥이 끊기는 경우가

많습니다. 그로 인해 조상들이 여러 대를 이어 연구하고 실험하여 터득한 비법이 잊혀져 버립니다. 최근에

인식이 많이 바뀌어 박사학위를 받고 나서도 가업을 이어받는 사람들이 생겨나고 있다고 합니다. 된장 명가,

김치 명가 혹은 공예 명가 들이 다시 회복되고 있는 추세라고 합니다.

On the other hand , many Myung Ga’s have practically disappeared in Korea due to the social trend that

valued pursuing a higher education and to building a successful career over keeping the artisanship of the family trade. Many secret recipes or skills that have been accumulated through the years of research and

experiments over many generations have been lost. In recent years, there's been a turn-around in this trend and some who've obtained higher degrees are forsaking their careers to pursue the family profession to carry-on the tradition. This trend is bringing about a revival of many Myung-ga's well known for soy bean paste, kimchi or handicrafts.

명가로서의 명성을 이어가기 위해서는 돈 벌이에 대한 관심을 끊어야 합니다. 돈 벌이에 마음을

빼앗기는 순간, 명가로서의 정신이 오염되어 버립니다. 어떤 면에서든 명가가 되기 위해서는 전해져 온 정신과

전통을 잇고 그것을 발전시키는 일에 전심을 다해야 합니다. 버는 돈의 양이 아니라 자신이 하는 일의 질에서

만족을 찾아야 합니다.

One ought not to seek money if he or she wants to keep the heritage as a Myung Ga. As soon as money-

making takes the priority above all other goals, the spirit of Myung Ga is tarnished or contaminated. To become a Myung Ga in any profession, one ought to strive for inheriting and developing the spirit and tradition with his whole heart. He ought to find satisfaction in the profession, not in money making.

여러분 중에 어떤 면에서든 명가의 전통을 이어가고 있는 분이 계십니까? 여러분이 이어가고 있는

정신은 무엇입니까? 어떤 점에서 그 정신이 존경 받을 가치가 있습니까? 그 정신과 전통은 여러분을 통해

자녀들에게도 이어져 나갈까요? 혹시 여러분 대에서 끝나는 것은 아닙니까? 만일 그렇다면 여러분

자신에게나 자녀에게 뿐 아니라 우리 사회에도 큰 손실이 아닐 수 없습니다.

Are any of you keeping the tradition of Myung Ga alive? What spirit are you keeping alive? From what

perspective could it be respected? Will this tradition be inherited to your children and will they keep it alive? Or, is it going to end in your generation? Then, it will be a big loss to our society as well as to you and your family.

아마도 우리 중 더 많은 사람들은 명가라는 이름과 상관 없는 보통 가정에서 태어나 자라왔을

것입니다. 한 때 자신의 노력으로 가문을 일으키고 명가로 세워 보려고 분투한 분들도 있을 것입니다만, 그

꿈을 이룬 사람은 그리 많지 않습니다. 오히려 그런 것에 대해 생각해 볼 겨를도 없이 먹고 사는 일에 휘둘려

살고 있는 사람들이 더 많을 것입니다.

Most of you may be born and raised in a normal family not associated with Myung Ga. Some of you

may dream of establishing a Myung Ga by your own effort and work hard, but not many achieved the dream. Rather, most of us are the ones who work hard for a day to day survival without having time to think about it.

그렇다고 해서 아무 것도 물려 받지 못한 사람은 별로 없습니다. 부모로부터 혹은 조상으로부터 물려

받은 귀중한 정신적 유산을 하나 둘쯤은 있을 것입니다. 어머니 날을 맞는 오늘같은 날이야말로 이런 것에

대해 잠시 생각해 보는 것은 아주 유익한 일입니다. 크게 내세울 것은 없을지 몰라도 우리 모두는 한 어머니를

가졌고, 그 어머니로부터 뭔가 전해 받은 것이 있습니다. 과연 그것은 무엇인지 그리고 우리는 그 정신적

유산을 잘 지키고 있는지, 잠시 돌아 볼 필요가 있습니다.

That doesn’t mean that we didn’t inherit anything from our parents. We may have some valuable spiritual heritage inherited from ancestors. It is beneficial to think of such heritage on this Mother’s Day for a moment. We may not be boastful about our mother, but we all have one mother, and inherited something valuable from her. Let’s reflect on the things we've inherited from her and examine ourselves to see if we are keeping them well.

지난 주간에 우리는 ‘전교인 성경일독’의 진도를 따라 열왕기상을 읽었습니다. 사무엘기와 마찬가지로

열왕기상과 하는 원래 한 권이었습니다. 내용이 워낙 많아서 헬라어로 번역될 때 상권과 하권으로 나누었는데,

기독교는 그 전통을 따르고 있는 것입니다.

We read the First Book of Kings last week following the Bible Reading Schedule. The Book of Kings

originally was one book but it was divided into two books while being translated into Greek and the Christianity have kept it that way til today.

‘열왕기’라는 말은 ‘열명의 왕에 대한 기록’이라는 뜻이 아닙니다. 이 이름에 사용된 한자 ‘列’은

‘열거하다’에 사용된 한자와 같은 것입니다. ‘여러 왕’ 혹은 ‘모든 왕’이라는 뜻입니다. 영어 성경의 제목은 The

Book of Kings입니다.

The Book of Kings is not a document of ten kings. ‘Yeol’ in Korean means many, so it means

documentation of multiple or many kings. In English it is called as the Book of Kings.

열왕기 전체가 마흔 일곱 장인데, 저자는 그 중 솔로몬 왕에게 열 한 장을 할애하고, 나머지 서른 여섯

장을 서른 아홉명의 왕에 대해 할애하고 있습니다. 4백년 정도의 역사를 서른 여섯 장에 요약한 것입니다.

당시에 저자에게는 ‘유다 왕 역대지략’(the Book of the Annals of the Kings of Judah)과 ‘이스라엘 왕

역대지략’(the Book of the Annals of the Kings of Israel)이라는 방대한 역사책이 있었습니다. 저자는 이

역사책을 기초로 하여 이스라엘과 유다 왕들의 치적을 간략하게 소개하면서 평가를 내립니다.

The Book of Kings is composed of 47 chapters. One chapter is allocated to King Solomon; and the

remaining chapters are recording of 39 kings. It records a history of 400 years in 36 chapters. At that time, two extensive history books were available to the writer: the Book of the Annals of the Kings of Judah and the Book of the Annals of the Kings of Israel. Based on these reference books, the author introduces the achievements of each king and evaluates them.

저자는 남왕국 유다의 왕들을 평가할 때 언제나 다윗을 기준으로 삼습니다. 예를 들면, 솔로몬의 손자

아비야 왕에 대한 평가는 이렇습니다

아비야는 그의 아버지가 지은 죄를 모두 그대로 따라 갔으며, 그의 조상 다윗의 마음과는 달라서, 주

하나님 앞에서 온전하지 못했다. (왕상 15:3)

The writer always refers to King David when he evaluates the Judean kings. For example, in 1 Kings 15:3, he evaluates Abijah, the grandson of Solomon this way: He committed all the sins his father had done before him; his heart was not fully devoted to the Lord his God, as the heart of David his forefather had been (1 Kings 15:3).

반면, 아비야의 아들 아사에 대해서는 이렇게 평가합니다.

아사는 그의 조상 다윗과 같이 주님께서 보시기에 정직하게 행하였다. (왕상 15:11)

However, the writer evaluates Asa, the son of Abijah, like this in 1 Kings 15:11:

Asa did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, as his father David had done (1 Kings 15:11).

이렇듯, 저자는 왕의 이름을 차례로 거론 하면서 평가를 하는데, 평가의 기준은 늘 다윗입니다. 어떤

왕이 좋은 영향을 미쳤다면 그 이유는 다윗 왕에게서 이어져온 정신을 계승했기 때문입니다. 즉, 왕권으로

인해 교만해지지 않고 하나님을 두려워할 줄 알았고, 자신에게 맡겨진 권력을 사용하여 공의를 이루기 위해

노력했기 때문입니다. 반면, 더 많은 왕들은 다윗의 정신적 유산을 잊고 자신의 탐욕을 위해 권력을

이용했습니다. 다윗의 길을 따라가지 않은 것입니다.

As such the writer continues to evaluate one king after another based on King David’s faith and

achievements. If one king has a good influence, the writer believes it is because the king inherited the spiritual heritage of King David. A good king didn’t abuse his power, feared God, and worked hard to achieve common wealth for his people. On the other hand, most of the kings abused their power to satisfy their greed, forgetting the spiritual heritage. They didn’t walk the path of King David.

반면, 북왕국 이스라엘의 왕들을 평가할 때 저자는 다른 기준을 사용합니다. 가령, 이스라엘의 세 번째

임금인 바아사에 대해 이렇게 평가합니다.

그는 주님께서 보시기에 악한 일을 하였고, 여로보암이 걸은 길을 그대로 걸었으며, 이스라엘에게 죄를

짓게 하는 그 죄도 그대로 따라 지었다. (왕상 15:34)

On the other hand, the writer uses different criteria when evaluating kings of Northern Israel. For

example, he evaluates Baasha, the third king of Northern Israel as such: He did evil in the eyes of the Lord, following the path of Jeroboam and committing the same sin Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit. (1 King 15:34)

그 외에 다른 왕들의 예를 인용할 필요가 없습니다. 저자에 따르면, 이스라엘의 임금 18명은 모두 첫

임금인 여로보암의 길을 따랐기 때문입니다. 열왕기 전체에서 “여로보암이 걸은 길을 그대로 걸었다”는

표현이 거듭 반복되는 이유가 여기에 있습니다. 조상으로부터 전해져 온 정신적인 전통을 거슬러 의롭고

거룩하게 살기 위해 노력했던 왕이 북왕국 이스라엘의 역사에 한 사람도 없었습니다. 여로보암이 시작한 악한

가문의 전통을 그대로 이어간 것입니다.

He didn’t need to take examples of any other kings. According to the writer all other 18 kings in

Northern Israel followed the path of Jeroboam, the first king. This is why the phrase ‘walked the same path Jeroboam did’ repeated in the Book of Kings. No kings in Northern Israel worked hard to keep the spiritual heritage of King David, and live righteously and holy. They kept the evil heritage Jeroboam started.

여로보암은 솔로몬이 아끼는 신하였습니다. 그가 어느 날 아히야라는 예언자에게서 북쪽의 열 지파를

다스리는 왕이 될 것이라는 예언을 듣습니다. 그 예언을 듣고 나서 여로보암이 어찌 했는지에 대해서는

알려진 바가 없습니다. 하지만 솔로몬이 여로보암을 죽이려고 했다는 기록(왕상 11:40)을 보면, 그 예언에 자극

받아 반역을 시도했던 것 같습니다. 솔로몬이 그것을 알아 차리자 여로보암은 솔로몬이 죽기까지 이집트에서

망명 생활을 합니다.

Jeroboam was a vassal whom King Solomon loved. One day, Jeroboam heard a prophecy from Prophet

Ahijah that he would become a king ruling over the 10 tribes of northern kingdom. There is no word on what Jeroboam did after hearing the prophecy. However, there is a record that Solomon tried to kill Jeroboam, probably prompted by hearing the prophecy. Due to this, Jeroboam had to live in exile in Egypt until Solomon died.

솔로몬 왕이 죽자 여로보암은 고국으로 돌아옵니다. 그 때 북쪽의 열 지파는 왕위에 오른 솔로몬의

아들 르호보암에게, 아버지 솔로몬 왕처럼 더 이상 건축 공사로 인해 자신들을 괴롭히지 않기로 약속해

준다면 그를 왕으로 인정하겠다고 제안 합니다. 르호보암은 공포 정치를 선택했고, 북쪽의 열 지파는

르호보암을 떠나 여로보암을 왕으로 옹립합니다. 이로 인해 우리 나라가 남쪽과 북쪽으로 나뉜 것처럼 북

왕국 이스라엘과 남 왕국 유다 사이의 분열의 역사가 시작됩니다.

After King Solomon died, Jeroboam came back to Israel. At that time, Solomon’s son, Rehoboam,

became the king. However, the people of the 10 tribes of Northern Kingdom petitioned that they would accept Rohoboam as their king if he promised not to burden them any more with construction works. However, Rehoboam chose to reign with terror, which resulted in the 10 tribes of Northern kingdom to enthrone Jeroboam as their king. Just as Korea is divided into North and South, thus began the history of disunion between Northern kingdom of Israel and Southern kingdom of Juda.

북 왕국 이스라엘의 첫 번째 왕이 된 여로보암은 백성들이 남 왕국의 수도에 있는 예루살렘 성전에

자주 오가는 상황을 두고 볼 수 없었습니다. 그래서 금송아지 상 두 개를 만들어서 야곱이 단을 쌓았던 베델과

북쪽 국경 근처에 있던 단에 하나씩 두었습니다. 그는 또한 자기 마음대로 절기를 만들고 레위인이 아닌

사람들을 산당에서 일할 제사장으로 임명하고 제사를 지내게 만듭니다.

Jeroboam, who became the first king of Northern kingdom of Israel, did not like that the people paid

pilgrimage to the temple located in Jerusalem of Southern kingdom. So, he made two golden calves and set one in Bethel, where Jacob had built an altar, and the other one near Dan in the north frontier. Jeroboam also set up holidays as he liked, and he appointed non- Levites as chief priest to administer sacrifices to God.

여로보암이 하나님을 두려워하는 사람이었다면 이렇게 할 수 없었을 것입니다. 마음대로 산당을 짓고

우상을 만들고 임의대로 제사를 드리게 했다는 말은 하나님을 무시했다는 뜻입니다. 그가 이렇게 한 이유는

하나님을 섬기기 위한 것이 아니었습니다. 하나님에 대한 백성의 믿음을 정권 유지를 위해 이용하려 했을

뿐입니다. 이렇게 함으로써 그는 이스라엘 백성 모두로 하여금 우상 숭배에 빠지게 만들었습니다.

If Jeroboam had any fear of God, he could not have done such thing. The acts of building high places,

making idols, and offering sacrifices to God as he liked meant that he had no respect for God. Jeroboam never intended to worship God. His interest was only to use the people’s faith in God as means to maintain his regime. By doing that, he made all of the Israelites to fall into idolatry.

우상 숭배는 타락한 인간의 본성입니다. 피조물인 인간은 무엇인가를 섬기게 되어 있습니다. “나는

아무 것도 섬기지 않는 독립적인 인간이다”라고 주장하는 사람들이 가끔 있습니다만, 실은 그들도 무엇인가를

절대 가치로 두고 섬기고 있습니다. 타락하기 이전의 우리의 본성은 창조주 하나님을 알고 사랑하고 섬기며

순종하도록 지어졌습니다. 그렇게 살 때 인간은 가장 행복할 수 있습니다. 하지만 아담과 하와는 하나님의

사랑 안에서의 행복을 사양하고 하나님 바깥에서의 삶을 선택했습니다. 그로 인해 인간은 “먹음직도 하고,

보암직도 하며” “사람을 슬기롭게 할 만큼 탐스럽기도 한”(창 3:6) 것을 찾아 신으로 삼고 살게 되었습니다.

Idol worship is an inherent nature of fallen humans. Created humans are made to worship something.

We sometimes see people who insist that “he is totally independent, not serving anything,” . However, even they in fact, also serve something with absolute worth. Our nature before the Fall was created to know and love God, serving and obeying Him only. We are the happiest when we live that way. But Adam and Eve rejected the life of happiness within the bounds and love of God. Instead, they chose the life without God. Since then, the humans have come to live searching for something to worship, which is good for food, and pleasing to the eyes, and also desirable for gaining wisdom.

그것이 우상 숭배입니다. 여로보암이 그랬듯이, 자기 마음대로, 자기 원하는 것을, 자기 식으로 섬기며

살아가는 것입니다. 그것이 더 편하고 더 유익하고 더 좋아 보이기 때문입니다.

성경은 일관되게 우상 숭배를 가장 위험한 죄로 규정합니다. 하나님을 알지 못하는 사람들은 “아무

해도 끼치지 않는 금송아지를 섬기는 것이 무슨 문제이기에 살인죄보다 더 큰 죄로 규정한 것입니까?”라고

묻습니다. 살인죄의 뿌리가 우상 숭배에 있기 때문입니다. 만일 그 사람이 하나님을 참되게 알았다면 그리고

그 하나님께서 무엇을 원하시는지를 알았다면, 그는 살인을 생각하지도 않았을 것입니다. 우상 숭배는 모든

죄의 원인입니다.

This is what it means to worship idol. As Jeroboam did, it is living freely, just as he wanted, serving

anything in the way he fashioned. Living this way seems more convenient and useful. The Bible constantly stipulates that worshipping idols is the most dangerous sin. Those people who do not know God ask, “Why does the Bible stipulate that worshipping idols as the biggest sin, heavier than murder? Idols are not harmful to us.” It is because worshipping an idol is the root of murder. If Jeroboam truly knew God and had known what God really wants, he would not think to commit murder. Worshipping idols is the root cause of all sins.

여로보암은 이스라엘의 역사를 불신앙 즉 우상 숭배의 기초 위에 놓았습니다. 자신의 정권을 지키는

것만 생각하다 보니 치명적인 잘못을 범한 것입니다. 사람은 그냥 내버려 두면 우상 숭배로 기울어지게 되어

있습니다. 그것이 타락한 마음의 방향입니다. 그 흐름을 되돌리려면 왕은 피나는 노력을 해야 합니다. 그래도

우상 숭배의 전염병은 완전히 막을 수가 없습니다. 그런데 왕이 나서서 우상 숭배를 격려한 것입니다.

Jeroboam placed the Israelite history on the foundation of unfaithfulness, that is, on worshipping idols.

He made a fatal mistake because he only thought to maintain his power. Human nature is inclined to worshipping idols. That is the direction of depraved mind. To change the flow, we have to exert tremendous amount of effort. Still, we cannot be protected completely from the epidemic of worshipping idols. Nevertheless, Jeroboam as the king encouraged people to worship idols.

바로 이것이 '여로보암의 길'입니다. 여로보암의 가문은 3대를 잇지 못하고 그 아들 나답이 암살

당합니다. 그 이후로 이스라엘의 왕실은 여러 번 바뀝니다. 열 아홉명의 이스라엘 왕 중에 암상 당한 사람이

여섯 명이나 됩니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 여로보암의 우상 숭배의 유산만큼은 변함 없이 이어집니다. 우상

숭배의 전통이 얼마나 큰 불행을 불러오는지를 보여 줍니다.

This is the path of Jeroboam. Jeroboam’s family line did not continue to the third generation before his

son, Nadab, was assassinated. After that, the Israel’s royal family line changed hand many times. Among the 19 kings of Israel, six of them were assassinated. Nevertheless, Jeroboam’s legacy of idol worship continued down the generation of rulers. It shows how the tradition of idol worship brought such great misery.

그렇다면 '다윗의 길'은 무엇입니까? 오늘 읽은 본문은 다윗이 솔로몬에게 준 유언의 일부입니다. 먼저,

다윗은 자신의 인생이 마지막에 이른 것을 인정합니다.

나는 이제 세상 모든 사람들이 가는 길로 간다. (왕상 2:2)

Then, what is “the path of David?” The scripture we read today is a part of David’s will given to

Solomon. First, David admitted that he was at the end of his life. “I am about to go the way of all the earth.” (1King 2:2)

이 말에서 우리는 죽음에 대한 다윗의 담담한 태도를 봅니다. 하나님을 두려워하며 공의를 위해

섬기기를 힘쓴 사람이기에 인생길의 마지막에서 이렇게 평안할 수 있습니다. 그 길이 영원하신 하나님께

이르는 길임을 믿는다면 담담함이 아니라 소망과 기쁨과 기대를 가지고 그 길을 갈 수 있을 것입니다.

From this, we see David’s calm attitude towards death. He had feared God and put his efforts to serve

for righteousness, that’s why he could have peace at the end of his life. If we believe that this is the path to reach the eternal God, then we can go on the jouney not only with calmness, but also with joy and hope.

그러면서 다윗은 이렇게 권면합니다. 여기에 '다윗의 길'이 요약되어 있습니다.

너는 굳세고 장부다워야 한다. 그리고 너는 주 너의 하나님의 명령을 지키고, 모세의 율법에 기록된

대로, 주님께서 지시하시는 길을 걷고, 주님의 법률과 계명, 주님의 율례와 증거의 말씀을 지켜라.

그리하면, 네가 무엇을 하든지, 어디를 가든지, 모든 일이 형통할 것이다. (왕상 2:2-3)

And so David advised like this in 1King 2:2-3. Here, we learn the “path of David”. “So, be strong, show yourself a man, and observe what the Lord your God requires: Walk in his ways, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and requirements, as written in the Moses, so that you may prosper in all you do and whatever you go. (1King 2:2-3)

'다윗의 길'은 하나님을 두려워하며 그분의 뜻을 찾고 그 뜻을 따라 공의를 위해 섬기는 것입니다. 그

길을 걸으라고 말하면서 다윗은 먼저 솔로몬에게 "너는 굳세고 장부다워야 한다"고 말합니다. "굳세어라"는

말과 "장부다워라"라는 말은 같은 뜻입니다. 마음을 단단히 다잡으라는 뜻입니다. 하나님을 두려워하고

공의를 위해 일하는 것은 만만한 일이 아니기 때문입니다.

“The path of David” is to find God’s will with fear of God, and to serve for righteousness. Instructing

Solomon to walk in his ways, David tells Solomon to, “be strong and show yourself a man.” “Be strong” and “be a man” have the same meaning. It means that “to have solid mind.” It is not an easy task to fear God and to serve for righteousness.

두 가지의 힘이 '다윗의 길'을 방해합니다. 하나는 자신의 탐욕입니다. 이기적인 욕심을 채우기 위해

권력을 사용하고 싶은 유혹이 끊임없이 마음을 흔듭니다. 다른 하나는 외부의 압력입니다. 세상은 바르게

살려는 사람을 그대로 두고 보지 않습니다. 특별히 힘을 가진 사람들이 그렇습니다. 끝내 자신과 같이 죄에

손을 담그게 만들려 합니다. 그렇기 때문에 권력자로서 하나님의 뜻에 순종하여 공의를 위해 살아가려면

강해져야 합니다.

There are two powers that disturb one from going the “path of David”. One is greed. The temptation to

use his power to satisfy his selfish greed shakes his mind constantly. Another one is the outside pressure. The world does not leave those who strive to walk with God alone. This outside pressure comes especially from

those with power. They try to get his hands dirty as they are. It is imperative that he must become strong in order to obey God and to live for righteousness.

다윗이 죽은 후에 솔로몬은 아버지의 유언을 지키기 위해 노력합니다. 그 결과로 인해 솔로몬은 당대

어느 왕과도 비교할 수 없는 번영을 이룹니다. "네가 무엇을 하든지, 어디를 가든지, 모든 일이 형통할

것이다"라는 다윗의 말이 거짓이 아니었습니다.

After David died, Solomon put his efforts to keep his father’s will. As its result, he enjoyed

incomparable prosperity than any other kings of his time. It was not a lie what David had said, “what you do, where you go, you may prosper in all.”

하지만 솔로몬은 번영을 견디지 못합니다. 데일 카아네기(Dale Carnegie)가 "누구나 역경을 견딜 수

있다. 하지만 오직 위대한 사람만이 번영을 견딘다"(Any man can stand adversity; only a great man can

stand prosperity)고 말한 적이 있습니다. 참, 아이러니가 아닐 수 없습니다. 다윗의 길을 따라 신실하게

하나님을 섬겨 번영을 얻었는데, 그 번영으로 인해 타락하게 되었으니 말입니다. 솔로몬의 타락을 저자는 한

문장으로 정리합니다.

솔로몬 왕은 외국 여자들을 좋아하였다. (왕상 11:1)

However, Solomon could not maintain the prosperity. Dale Carnegie once said, “Any man can stand

adversity; only a great man can stand prosperity.” This is such an irony. By following the path of David, serving God sincerely, Solomon received prosperity; however, it became the very stumbling block for him to fall. The author explained Solomon’s fallen in one sentence:

Solomon loved many foreign women. (1King 11:1)

"외국 여자를 좋아하는 것이 무슨 문제인가?"라고 의아해 하실 분들이 있을 것입니다. 사람에 따라

외국 남자 혹은 외국 여자를 더 좋아할 수도 있습니다. 하지만 이것은 단순한 취향 혹은 기호를 말하는 것이

아닙니다. 도를 넘어선 성적 욕망을 암시합니다. 더 강하고 더 다양한 쾌락을 추구하기 시작했다는 뜻입니다.

그보다 더 큰 문제는 그 여인들로 인해 우상 숭배의 죄에 빠지게 되었다는 사실에 있었습니다. 더 큰 쾌락을

위해 그 여인들의 비위를 맞추다 보니 그들이 섬기는 우상 숭배가 나라 안에 퍼지도록 허락한 것입니다.

Some may ask, “What’s wrong with loving foreign women?” It’s an individual’s preference. But, here,

it is not talking simply about one’s tendency or taste. It alludes his excessive sexual desire. It means that he began to seek more pungent and various pleasures. The bigger problem was that he fell into the sin of worshipping idols from those foreign women. Seeking for more pleasure, he had to curry favors with the foreign women, which allowed the idolatry to spread throughout the nation.

옳은 길을 택하고 그 길에서 완주하는 것이 이토록 어려운 것입니다. 다윗도 여러 번 넘어졌습니다.

다행히도, 그는 하나님 앞에서 자신의 연약함을 인정했고 사람 앞에서 낮아질 줄 알았기에 넘어질 때마다

일어나 그의 길에서 완주할 수 있었습니다. 하지만 솔로몬은 다윗의 길에서 벗어난 다음에 회복되지

못했습니다.

Choosing the righteous path and finishing it is this difficult. David had also fallen several times.

Fortunately, he admitted his weakness before God, and he humbled himself before others. This was how David was able to finish the race. However, Solomon could not recover himself once he strayed from the David’s ways.

열왕기는 유다 백성이 바벨론에서 포로 생활을 하는 동안에 쓰였습니다. 저자는 “왜 하나님의 선민이

이와 같이 처참한 운명에 처하게 되었는가?”라는 질문에 답하기 위해 이 책을 썼습니다. 생명과 축복에 이르는

'다윗의 길'과 멸망과 재앙에 이르는 '여로보암의 길'을 독자들에게 제시하고 자신이 걷고 있는 길을 점검해

보기를 바랬습니다. 다윗처럼 한 길 가는 인생이 되기를 기도하는 마음을 이 책을 썼습니다.

The Books of Kings were written during the period when the people of Judah were in captivity in

Babylon. The author wrote these books as an answer to the question, “Why did God’s chosen people meet such a tragic fate?” He presented “the path of David” leading to life and blessings and “the path of Jeroboam” to destruction and calamities, in the hopes that the readers will examine the path they were walking on. He wrote these books in a prayer that the readers would lead life on the same path as David did.

따라서 오늘 열왕기를 읽는 우리도 같은 질문을 던져야 합니다. 나는 어떤 길을 걷고 있는가? 내가

걷는 길은 다윗의 길인가 아니면 여로보암의 길인가? 나의 인생은 바른 길을 선택하고 그 길에서 완주하는

인생이 될 것인가?

Therefore, as we read the Books of Kings today, we must cast the same question to ourselves: What kind

of path am I walking on? Is my path that of David or of Jeroboam? Will my life be on the right path and be able to finish the journey?

"교회에 다니고 있으니 나는 다윗의 길을 걷고 있는 거겠지!"라고 생각하지 마시기 바랍니다. 중요한

것은 교회에 다니느냐가 아니라 다윗의 길을 걷고 있느냐는 것입니다.

살아계신 하나님을 진실로 믿느냐? 매일 그 하나님의 뜻을 따라 살기 위해 힘쓰고 있느냐? 죄와 유혹

앞에서 하나님을 두려워할 줄 아는가? 돈과 권력과 이익보다 하나님의 뜻을 더 중요하게 생각하고 사는가?

하나님 앞에서 자신이 어떤 존재인 줄 알고 하나님 앞에서든 사람 앞에서든 언제든지 약해질 준비가 되어

있는가?

Please don’t think yours is the path of David simply because you are attending church. What matters is

not whether you attend church, but whether you are walking on the path of David.

Do you truly believe in the living God? Are you striving daily to live according to His will? Are you fearful of God as you stand before sin and temptation? Do you consider God’s will to be more important than money, power and gain? Do you know who you are before God? Are you ready to be vulnerable before God, anytime, as well as before people?

이런 질문에 대해 겸손히 그러나 분명히 "예"라고 말할 수 있어야 '다윗의 길'에 서 있다고 말할 수

있습니다.

그 믿음을 여러분은 누구에게서 전해 받았습니까? 설문 조사를 한다면 어머니에게서 믿음을 전해

받았다고 대답하는 분들이 제일 많을 것입니다. 어릴 때부터 믿기 시작한 사람은 주로 어머니의 영향

때문이고, 나이 들어 믿기 시작한 사람은 주로 아내 때문입니다. 여자가 없이는 남자는 구원 받을 수가

없습니다.

If you can humbly but firmly say yes to these questions, then you are on the path of David. From whom did you inherit such a faith? If we conduct a survey, the most people probably will answer

“from their mothers.” For those who start believing at a young age, it is their mothers, whereas, for those who start believing at a later stage of life, it is because of their wives. Men can’t be saved without women.

저의 경우도 그렇습니다. 제 어머니는 자식에게 믿음을 물려 주는 것이 최고의 소원이셨습니다. 어릴

적에 새벽기도회를 다녀 오신 어머니께서는 늘 저와 제 형제들의 이마에 손을 얹고 기도해 주셨습니다.

그래서 제 이마가 이렇게 넓어진 것입니다. 때로는 너무 쎄게 기도하셔서 잠에서 깨곤 했습니다. 치매로 인해

정신을 잃기 전까지 어머니는 전화에 대고 늘 그러셨습니다. "몸 성허냐? 에미헌티 잘 허구? 교회 평안허구?

그럼 됐어! 그만 끊어. 전화비 올러간다."

The same is true in my case. My mother’s greatest wish was to leave her faith to her children. Every

time she returned home from the dawn prayer meeting, she would put her hands on our foreheads and pray. That’s how I got this hairline. Sometimes, she would pray so hard that it was enough to wake us from our sleep. Until she lost her clarity due to dementia, she would always say this on the phone: “Are you healthy? Are you good to your wife? Is church peaceful? Good to hear that! Let me let you go then. Don’t let me run up the phone bill too much.”

앞에서 저는 명가에 대한 이야기를 했습니다. 이 세상에 태어나 어느 면으로든 명가를 이루는 것은

칭찬 받을만한 일입니다. 하지만 정말 중요한 것은 믿음의 전통을 잇는 것입니다. 다윗이 마지막으로 아들에게

꼭 주고 싶었던 말은 하나님께 대한 믿음이었습니다. 제 어머니가 제게 전해 준 한 마디도 역시

믿음이었습니다. 그리고 바로 그것이 제가 제 아이들에게 그리고 그 아이들의 아이들에게 꼭 전해주고 싶은

유일한 유산입니다. 그것이면 다 되는 것을 알기 때문입니다.

Earlier, I talked about Myung-ga or “reputable families.” Being born into this world, establishing in any

aspect a house of good reputation is worth praising. However, what is really important is succeeding in the tradition of faith. David’s last word to his son was about his faith in God. The one word my mother left me also was faith. This also is the only legacy that I want to leave to my children and to their children. For I know that faith solves everything.

혹시 여러분 중에 여로보암의 길을 걷고 있는 분들이 있습니까? “예배에 나와 앉은 사람들에게 그게

무슨 질문입니까?”라고 물으시겠습니까? 여로보암이 금송아지를 만들어 놓고 뭐라고 했는지 기억하십니까?

예루살렘으로 올라가는 일은, 너희에게는 너무 번거로운 일이다. 이스라엘 백성들아, 너희를

이집트에서 구해 주신 신이 여기에 계신다. (왕상 12:28)

Are any of you walking on the path of Jeroboam? Do you want to ask, “What kind of question is that to

people who came to a worship service?” Do you remember what Jeroboam said after making golden calves? It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt. (1 Kings 12:28)

금송아지를 만든 여로보암은 우상 숭배를 한다고 생각하지 않았습니다. 이스라엘 백성들은 금송아지

앞에 절하는 것을 하나님 섬기는 것이라고 생각했습니다.

오늘날에도 이런 식으로 믿는 사람들이 얼마나 많은지 모릅니다. 형식으로는 하나님을 믿는다고

하지만 실은 자신의 우상을 섬기는 것입니다. 하나님보다 성공을, 번영을, 돈을, 자식 성공을 앞세우면

하나님을 섬긴다고 하면서 금송아지를 섬겼던 이스라엘 백성들과 별로 다르지 않습니다.

Jeroboam did not consider making golden calves as idolatry. The people of Israel thought bowing before

the golden calves was worshipping God. Even today, how many people exercise their faith in the same manner! In formality, they believe in God, but in truth, they are serving their own idols. If you put success, prosperity, money, or your kids’ success before God, you are not much different from the Israelites who worshipped golden calves in the name of worshipping God.

여로보암이 잘 못 만들어 놓은 전통 때문에 이스라엘 왕실은 우상 숭배와 그로 인한 죄로 얼룩졌고

그래서 피흘림이 빈번했습니다. 혹시 여러분에 이르기까지 불신앙과 우상 숭배의 전통이 이어져 왔다면,

여러분 대에서 그것을 끊으시기 바랍니다. 불신앙과 우상숭배의 전통과 습관을 여러분의 가문에서 깨끗이

씻어내고 오직 참된 하나님만을 섬기는 거룩한 믿음의 명가를 세우시기 바랍니다.

Because of the wrong tradition that Jeroboam established, the royal court of Israel was tainted with idolatry and the subsequent sins, and often bloodshed. If the tradition of non-belief and idolatry has reached your generation, please cut it off at your generation. I hope that you will establish a good house of holy faith by thoroughly cleansing the tradition and customs of non-belief and idolatry from your family and only serve the true God.

다윗의 길을 따라 한 길 가는 인생—이것처럼 복된 인생이 없습니다. 자기 자신에게도 그렇고

이웃에게도 그렇고 후손에게도 그렇습니다. 부디, 저와 여러분, 우리 모두가 다윗의 길을 따라 하나님을

두려워하고 공의를 위해 섬기는 인생길에서 완주할 수 있기를 기도합니다. 그리고 그것이 길이 되어 우리의

자손들도 그 길을 따라 복된 삶을 누리고 또한 이 세상을 복되게 만드는 도구로 사용되기를 기도합니다.

A life on the same path as David—there is no life more blessed than this. This is true for yourself, your neighbors, and your descendants. I pray that all of us will follow the path of David to reach the finishing line on our own path of life as we fear God and serve Him for His righteousness. I also pray that our future generations will follow such paths that lead to blessed lives and be used as instruments to make this world blessed.

여로보암의 길을 갈 뻔했던 저희를

다윗의 길로 인도하신 주님,

저희로 하여금

이 길 위에서 완주하도록

저희의 마음과 생각,

저희의 손과 발,

저희의 꿈과 열망을

붙들어 주소서.

주님의 길에 서서

평생 한 길 가는 인생이 되게 하소서.

믿음의 길을 걸어

믿음의 가문을 이어가게 하소서.

Lord, You led us to the path of David When we almost took the path of Jeroboam. To let us Reach the finish line in this race, Please hold

Our minds and thoughts, Our hands and feet, Our dreams and aspirations. On Your path, Let us live a life of walking the same path. By walking the path of faith, Let us reach Your house of faith. Amen.
