Sally Ride, American’s spacewoman, doesn’t look very different from a lot of other American

professional women. She is attractive, with curly brown hair, dark brown eyes, and a bright smile. She likes

to dress simple: She wears comfortable but colorful clothes, like many people form California. But in 1983

Sally Ride became America’s first woman astronaut. She was one of five astronauts on the space shuttle “

Challenger”, which completed a successful six-day voyage in space in June 1983. What makes a woman

want to go into space?

Sally Ride grew up in Los Angeles, California. Her father is a professor at Santa Monica College, and

her mother is a housewife. At Westlake High school for girls, she was both an excellent student and tennis

were accepted to start the programme in 1978. As part of her training she learned to be a jet pilot and a

flight engineer. She married during her training. Her husband, Hawlay, is also an astronaut. They do not

plan to have any children yet. When NASA decided to put a woman into space, none of Sally’s friends were

surprised that they choose Sally. She has always been a person who wanted to go further. So when the space

shuttle Challenger carried her on her first mission into space. Sally did what she had often done before she

Water on the earth is being recycled continuously in a process known as the hydrologic cycle. The first

step of the cycle is the evaporation of water in the oceans. Evaporation is the process of water turning into

vapor, which then forms clouds in the sky. The second step is the water returning to the earth in the form of

precipitation; either rain snow or ice When the water reaches the earth’s surface, it runs off into the rivers,

lakes, and the oceans, where the cycle begins again.

Not all water. however. stays on the surface of the earth in the hydrologic cycle. Some of it seeps

into the ground through infiltration and collects under the earth’s surface as groundwater. This groundwater

is extremely important to life on earth. since 95 percent of the earth’s water is in the ocean and is too salty

for human beings or plants. Of 5 percent on land. only. 0.5 percent is above ground in rivers or lakes. The

rest is underground water. This ground water is plentiful and dependable, because it doesn’t depend on

seasonal rain or snow. lt is the major source of water for many cities. But as the population increases and the

need for water also increases. the groundwater in some areas is getting dangerously low. Added to this

problem is an increasing amount of pollution that seeps into the groundwater.

ln the future. with a growing _population and more toxic waste. the hydrologic cycle we depend on

could become dangerously imbalanced.

21. Clouds are formed from

A. Water vapor B. evaporation .C. the hydrologic cycle D. ground water

22. Water returns to the earth by

A. infiltration B. pollution C. precipitation D. evaporation

23. The amount of groundwater is

Topic 1: COMPARE LIFE IN THE CITY AND IN THE COUNTRYSIDE

In my opinion, urban life or rural life has its own advantages and disadvantages.

First, living in the city we may enjoy those benefits.

- Communication and transportation systems are better. There are so many means of communication and

transport that we can choose the ones we like best. We can get in touch with a friend or talk to him by phone

without having to go out of home.

- Thanks to electricity network and running water, our material lives are more comfortable. Supermarkets,

markets and shops are found everywhere and we can buy anything we need providing that we can afford it.

- Urban life provides us with all sorts of entertainments: televisions, radios, movies, theatres, concerts and

famous recreation centers.

- Living in town we can improve our knowledge easily by attending any schools, universities or evening

classes where experienced teachers and professors are ready to satisfy our thirst for knowledge.

Besides its advantages, urban life also has its disadvantages:

- Our health is in danger: pollution by factories and heavy traffic may cause serious diseases to all of us.

- Evil influence upon the young generation by obscene video films is inevitable.

- Violent deaths happen regularly in such a crowded city with all kinds of vehicles.

On the contrary, rural life seems ideal to all of us, especially to the old.

- We can enjoy fresh, cool air and behold beautiful landscapes in the country.

- How safe and delighted we are when we can sleep a sound sleep at any time of the day without being

disturbed by sirens of cars or by deafening noises from manufacturing factories.

- Our social lives in the country are easier: we can eat the food and vegetables we grow, the chickens and

goats we raise. The countrymen lead a very simple life and they are quick at mutual help in any case.

Apart from these advantages, living in the country we may meet lots of difficulties too.

- Communication and transportation are obstructed by lack of means of transport or by floods in the rainy

season.

Page 18: on chung chi b-1

- Our knowledge is limited by being short of mass media.

- Our social and physical lives are not as comfortable as those in town because of lack of electricity and

medical care.

In a nutshell, our love for town life or country life depends on our outlook and age. As for me, I always

prefer rural life to urban life.

City vs. Countryside

Looking for a good place to settle is not easy like you finish your homework or your job. I lived in

countryside until 12, and then my family moved to a big city. Thus, I have experienced the conflicting

living in countryside and a big city. By comparing and contrasting my own experience living in countryside

and one in a big city, I would prefer someday to live in a big city because of the modern life, high

education, and good health care.

First of all, living in a big city is more modern than one in countryside. In countryside, the life is very

peaceful and safe. For example, people living in countryside don't have to worry much about how their life

looks. They just go to work and make enough money to support their family. Also, everything in

countryside seems to be quiet, and the neighborhood is very friendly and generous, too. They can share each

other everything such as fruits, foods, and clothing. Therefore, people can enjoy themselves without

annoying from anything. Besides, nobody can deny the fresh air in countryside. The less transportation and

more places such as parks and gardens make countryside become more peaceful and healthy.

Although living in a big city is not peaceful and quiet like living in countryside, people feel more

comfortable and convenient. For instance, if you want to go somewhere or to save your money from

gasoline, there are lots of public transportations such as the bus, railroad, and train which are always

available to support people. Additionally, a big city is often a place where many problems like robbery,

violation, rape, etc... occur mostly in a city, but the security is always available and ready to solve any

problem. On the contrary, people living in countryside lack of this service; for example, if they are in

danger, who will be there to save them immediately? The security has to spend at least a half an hour to be

there, I guess. In short, living in countryside is more peaceful and none-stressful, but people living a big city

usually have enough supporting services for them.

The second obvious reason why I prefer to live in a big city is the high education. Everyone wants to have a

good job to get more money, and one of the best ways to succeed is education. Nowadays there are a lot of

famous universities and colleges, and these schools totally locate in a big city. Most of people try to attend

these schools to gain their knowledge, so they tend to move and live in a big city. Also, education in a big

city supports the high technology that helps students and teachers easily have a successful academic. For

example, the increase in the libraries, laps, internet, etc... helps students get information anytime they want.

Page 19: on chung chi b-1

On the contrary, education in countryside is a serious problem. High school graduation rates in countryside

are always lower than one in a big city. Many people would think that since the students are not intelligent,

the graduation rates are low. Nevertheless, it is not true in this case. Students living in countryside are even

more diligent than ones in a big city because there is less entertainment center for them, so the only thing

student should do is to do their homework. However, just a few students succeed in countryside. The reason

must be the lack of good education. The schools didn't support enough reference books in the library,

computers, or even good teachers. These lead to why people living in a big city gain more knowledge than

ones in countryside.

The last reason I choose to live in a big city is about health care. Nowadays in countryside, government

established more health care such as the hospital, clinic, and medical station, and people can get there easily

and quickly when they are in trouble. However, what people really need is not the number of health care,

but the quality of it. For instance, if you are staying at home, and your heart attack is suddenly relapsed, I

bet the health care will take long to put you in a hospital. Also, the countryside hospitals can't be sure

whether or not they can rescue you because of the lack of the high and modern medical machines. The result

is eventually that you still need to be transferred to a big modern hospital in a big city.

A big city is not only a big modern city originally but also a face of a country, so government always

supports the best ways and medical services for people. For example, if a country is suffered by a spreading

virus such as the swine flu, I believe that people living in a big city will be able to get the vaccine first.

Besides, there are many modern medical machines and good doctors that can easily determine what disease

a patient gets and then expose the best ways to solve it. All of the reasons about health care above can help

us understand how well the health care in a big city is.

In conclusion, people have their own choices to decide to live in countryside or a big city. As I can see,

most of old people probably tend to live in countryside because they like to have peaceful life and enjoy

themselves with the fresh air and quietness. However, other people want their own life comfortable and

convenient. For me or even my future family, I would prefer to live in a big city because of the modern life,

high education, and good health care.

Describe your best friend and tell why you like him

or her

Page 20: on chung chi b-1

In our daily activities we often get in touch with the others and from these relations we meet some people whose

interests, characteristics and behaviors are similar to ours and we choose them as our friends.

To me, one of my best friends is Nam. Nam is only over eighteen but he is well developed; so he is thought to be twenty

or more. He has black hair, a broad forehead, a straight nose and bright eyes. He is very good-looking. He has a kind

heart and is easy to get on with everybody. We have been friends for a very long time. The deeper our

mutualunderstanding becomes the more we feel closely attached to each other. “Birds of a feather flock together”, Nam

and I are keen on learning. We are the best pupils in our class. Nam is always at the top. He is good at every subject,

but he never shows pride in his abilities and always tries tolearn harder.

Nam’s family is not rich enough. His parents are retired workers. Realizing the hardships of his parents, although he is

absorbed in his study, he often spends most of his spare time doing useful things to help his parents in their old age. He

gets up early in the morning to have enough time to deliver newspapers to subscribers before going to school. After

school in the afternoon, he repairs bicycles and motorbikes. Therefore the money he gets from his manual job is

sufficient for his school fees and for his parents’ presents. I like Nam very much because of his honesty and straight

forwardness. He is always ready to help his weak friends in their study; as a result, lots of friends, thanks to his whole-

hearted help, have become good ones.

In my relation with Nam, I have got precious experience: thirst for learning, patience to overcome difficulties,

helpfulness and filial piety.

Describe the house you are living in

9**********Describe the house you are living in. Why do you love it?

The house we are living in is situated in the suburb of HCM city, within thirty minutes’ drive off the central city. We have lived there for more than twenty years. This is a fairly large house surrounded with a luxuriant garden.

My house consists of four bed-rooms, a living-room, a bathroom with a shower, a dinning-room, a kitchen and a toilet. It is air-conditioned and well-furnished. The living-room is decorated beautifully. Paintings by famous artists are hung on the walls. At night, the color neon lights increase the beauty and coziness of the room. There, on Sundays and holidays my father usually spends his time playing chess or drinking tea with his friends. My mother and my two sisters are diligent and hard-working women. They often keep the house clean and tidy.

On suffocating days of summer, we usually take meals in the garden. It is fairly cool and quiet here. We enjoy our meals amid the melodioustwitters of birds. On stormy and rainy nights all whole family members gather in the living-room, watching television or telling each other about their daily activities.

I love my house very much because it is the place where I was born and have grown up in the education of my father and in the tender loving care of my mother. I have spent my whole childhood in the love and affection of my dear ones with so many sweet memories.

My holiday began since july and finish in August. First, We traveled in Vung Tau for three days. Weather

was very nice in here. In the morning, We went to swimming, the beach was very clean, I found many sea

snail, it is souvenir of my holiday. Now, We ere in Da Lat, We went here two days ago. Today, weather is

very cool. I 'm going Ho Xuan Huong lake in the morning, and then I 'im going Tinh Yeu vale. I 'im going

to drink coffe in evening. The coffe is speciality of Tay Nguyen.
