DESCRIPTION

The yearly "Ordo" is the calendar you need to guide you through the Church's year as you pray the Daily Office with the volumes of The Wayfarer's Breviary. This beautiful booklet lists all the days of the Church Year from Advent 2015 till Advent 2016, giving each day's celebration, together with other needed information for the praying of the Daily Office. Included are information about the Church seasons (Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, etc.), charts of the principal celebrations of the year, the seasons, and information on the daily readings that go along with Morning and Evening Prayer each day, the specific passages assigned in the lectionary for Sundays and solemnities, as well as the appropriate liturgical color for each day. Each Sunday lists the proper week of the 2-Week Psalter to be used for praying the Psalms that week. Each left-hand page is blank for your personal notes & prayer concerns. Designed for use with The Wayfarer's Breviary, or for anyone who prays the Daily Office.

Miscellaneous Notes 1. The liturgical year 2016 runs from November 29, 2015 through November 26, 2016, and begins at first Vespers of the First Sunday of Advent. The Revised Common Lectionary for Year C, and the Daily Office Lectionary for Year Two, are used in 2016. 2. On the late weekdays of Advent after December 17, 2015, the lectionary is adapted so that the lessons appointed for the days of the fourth week of Advent (Sunday through Friday) are used on the days from December 18−23 (except on Dec. 21, the feast of St. Thomas); those appointed for the third week of Advent are therefore omitted after December 17. (See table on page 6.) 3. Since March 25, 2016 is Good Friday, the solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, normally assigned to this day, is transferred to April 4. 4. On September 11, the following petition may be used during the Intercessions at the office, or as an additional collect at the conclusion of Morning or Evening Prayer:

God of steadfast love, who led your people of ancient times through the wilderness: Be with us as we remember before you the events of September 11, 2001, and as we grieve the loss of so many of your sons and daughters. By your grace, lead us in the path of new life, as we continue our journey together in the company of your angels and saints.

5. In addition to every Sunday of the year, on the following solemnities, participation in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, and reception of Holy Communion, are strongly recommended:

Christmas Day (December 25), The Annunciation (transferred to April 4 in 2016), Ascension Day (on May 5 in 2016), and All Saints’ Day (November 1).

6. In the Calendar, the rank of liturgical days is indicated with the following notations (in Roman numerals):

Notes & Prayer Concerns Days of special devotion during Lent Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 10, 2016. In Lent, special devotion is observed on every weekday, except on the solemnities of St. Joseph (March 19) and the Annunciation of the Lord:

Fasting is observed on every weekday, except on solemnities and feasts. Since Wednesday, February 24 is the feast of Saint Matthias the Apostle, the customary Lenten fast is relaxed on the day of the feast (though abstinence, or some other form of special devotion, should nevertheless be observed).

Abstinence is observed on Wednesdays and Fridays, with exceptions only on the Annunciation, beginning with dinner on the vigil (March 24); on St. Joseph if it occurs on Wednesday; and, if St. Joseph falls on Saturday, at the vigil dinner on Friday evening. Since March 25, 2016 is Good Friday, the solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, normally assigned to this day, is transferred to to Monday, April 4; and since St. Joseph falls on Saturday, abstinence is dispensed on Friday evening, March 18, and special devotion is dispensed altogether on the day of the solemnity.

Strict fast and abstinence are observed on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday: no food is taken until 3:00 p.m. or until dinner in the evening, at which meat is not served; additionally, no coffee is consumed on these days.

Notes & Prayer Concerns Commemorations during Lent In keeping with ancient tradition, the observance of Lenten weekdays ordinarily takes precedence over lesser feasts occuring during this season. In Lent lesser feasts are observed as simple commemorations: the proper collect appointed for the Lenten

weekday is used as the Collect of the Day at Morning and Evening Prayer;

the collect of the lesser feast is used to conclude the Litany of Penitence following Morning Prayer;

and at Evening Prayer the saint of the day is named at the appropriate place in the Suffrages following the Lord’s Prayer (but not at first Vespers on Saturday or on the eves of solemnities) and the collect of the lesser feast is not used.

Additionally, the usual custom of permitting the

celebration of a lesser feast to be transferred to a later open day in the week is not practiced during Lent; the collect of the lesser feast may, however, be added as a commemoration at the conclusion of Morning Prayer. Spring Ember Days Ember Days do not take precedence of Lenten weekdays. On Wednesday and Friday, the Litany for Ordinations and the appropriate Ember Day collect are used immediately following Evening Prayer, and on Saturday immediately following Noonday Prayer.

Notes & Prayer Concerns May 30 Memorial Day Collect: O Judge of the nations, we remember before you with grateful hearts the men and women of our country who in the day of decision ventured much for the liberties we now enjoy. Grant that we may not rest until all the people of this land share the benefits of true freedom and gladly accept its disciplines. This we ask in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. or this Ever-living God, we remember those whom you have gathered from the storm of war into the peace of your presence; may that same peace calm our fears, bring justice to all peoples and establish harmony among the nations, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. or this O God of truth and justice, we hold before you those whose memory we cherish, and those whose names we will never know. Help us to lift our eyes above the torment of this broken world, and grant us the grace to pray for those who wish us harm. As we honor the past, may we put our faith in your future; for you are the source of life and hope, now and for ever. Amen.

Amen. November 11 Veterans Day Collect: O Judge of the nations, we remember before you with grateful hearts the men and women of our country who in the day of decision ventured much for the liberties we now enjoy. Grant that we may not rest until all the people of this land share the benefits of true freedom and gladly accept its disciplines. This we ask in the Name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
