• I had to cut it short when I somehow stressed myself into some weird feelings. – Still have to make it up to family I skipped out on.

Spent Christmas in my cocoon here in LA.• I can’t convey the good feeling I had when I got home.

– I’m also wondering how I will feel on the Japan trip in the Summer. The folks at Kaiser can help me out on this.

– This could mean this will be my last year for traveling. I’ve heard this happen to other people, but never thought it would happen to me.

• In a past issue of the OS, I told you about the new cell phone law.– Another law prohibits anyone under 18 from

using any electronic communications device while in the car; that includes ear pieces.

• Another law starting this month prohibits smoking in a car with a minor.

The Hollywood Santa Parade: I knew it as the Hollywood Santa Claus Lane Parade, but it was given up by its sponsors. When the city took it over, they changed the name. Plenty of folks came, but not many participants.

I was there assisting the Fire Department as part of CERT.

• LAFD replaced an old station in San Pedro, our harbor district with a new facility. Many attended, even Mayor Tony. No girlfriend. He played congas with a Chicano band.

• At least it got chilly, but not our usual freezing temps. Winds rocked us at Christmas. They also warmed us up on New Year’s Day. November was fire time, sheesh!

• Alma Mater, John Marshall High won its Homecoming Game in a tough battle against Lincoln High in November.

• Needless to say, USC won on New Year’s Day. Illinois was just sad, but came up with some points to keep face. 49-17

An equally sad game was Georgia’s drubbing of Hawaii. 41-10.

•The government asked mortgage companies to put a moratorium on raising their contracted mortgage payment rates to avoid more people defaulting.

•They gave money to people who should never should have been allowed to borrow. They loaned amounts of money that would be over the heads of people who were borderline. They did it with seductive low initial rates, even knowing that the types of people they were loaning to did not read the terms of their contracts, failing to see how the payments would “balloon” at the appointed times a few years later, often above the ability of the debtor’s to pay the new rates.

•The problem is that if government helps people who should not be allowed to borrow money, that eventually endangers the economy as well, because they will continue the irresponsible borrowing. That in turn attracts the ilk of the sub-prime lenders and other predators. It is still legal to do this?! It is still good business?

• お知らせ : As far as I know, I still plan a trip to Japan. I hope to leave on June 24th and arrive on June 25th. I will travel around, visiting good friends in Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto, and Fukushima. If I am traveling with some graduating students, I will also go to Hiroshima. I will return to LA on July 9, or when my Japanese friends tell me to get lost. Here is the itinerary for the trip, IF, the students go along. Do you recommend any locations for hostels?
