• A cross-sectional analytical study in multicenter using the U.S. database of intensive care unit patients. 50,322 patients admitted from the emergency department to the intensive care unit (2000–2003) were included and divided into two groups.

• Compare the outcomes in cases of emergency department boarding ≥6 hrs (delayed, n = 1,036) vs. emergency department boarding <6 hrs (nondelayed, n = 49,286).

• Patients with a ≥6-hr delay in intensive care unit transfer had significantly increased hospital length of stay and higher intensive care unit and hospital mortality.

Nurse-Activated Acute Stroke Codes in the Emergency Setting Improves Process and Clinical Outcomes

(Song et al., 2016)

• Evaluate the process and outcomes after changed ED acute stroke evaluation algorithm from being primarily physician-driven to nurse-driven by comparison of pre and post intervention analysis.

• Several clinical outcomes are improved, – patients receiving IVrtPA improving from 17% to 20 %

– patients undergoing endovascular procedure increasing from 1 to 4 %

– average door-to-endovascular procedure decreasing from 2h43min to 1h56min.

Quality of Life of Thai Trauma Survivors in the Unrest

Areas of the Southernmost Provinces (Songwathana, Kitrungrote & Koopantawee, 2015)

• Follow up 132 trauma survivors using QoL (SF-36) average time after injury = 2.7 years month, disability 37.9%

• Severity score based on ISS (only 54 cases recorded), ISS> 15 = 15.1 % ,

• QoL at moderate level (51.5%), low (25%), high (23.5%)

• The disability, employment, social support, and feeling secure from the unrest, had significant direct effects on QoL of trauma survivors and could explain 47% of the variance of QoL.

Predictive Factors for HRQoL among Thai Survivors of Traumatic Brain Injury Post Hospital Discharge

(Songwathana, Kitrungrote, Anumas, Nimitpan, in press)

• 200 people with TBI at least 1 month after discharge were purposively selected, using the Quality of Life after Traumatic Brain Injury (QOLIBRI) instrument

• The majority had sustained their injury in the past year (67.5%), had a severe or moderate TBI on admission (57%). 41.5% reported good recovery (based on the GOS) at discharge.

• HRQoL score were at moderate level (62.9%).

• The physical and psychological factors especially GCS, social support, anxiety, depression, and community integration could predict HRQoL (58%). The most important predictor was social support.
