annualParent Child Survivor Camp 2012
Pacuare River, Costa RicaSession 1 June 16th – 20th Session 2 June 20th – 24th
An exploration deep into the wilderness and relationship with our children.
This program is open to all who want to forge a deeper relationship with their child. The
only restrictions are the age of the kids, (13 – 16), and only one child and one parent per

tightly bonding group experience for all in a very special, naturally unspoiled and intimate
place on earth. Friends of the parents or the kids are more than welcome to come along.

Grano De Oro: http://www.hotelgranodeoro.com/ Situated on a shady street just off Paseo Colon, San
Jose’s main thoroughfare, Hotel Grano de Oro is a true oasis, a sanctuary in the heart of the city. Convertedfrom a Tropical Victorian mansion, the 40-room hotel maintains the warmth and comfort of a private home.
Hallways lined with period photographs and original art meander through the building and present lush tropicalflower arrangements and luxurious plants at every turn. Spanish tile fountains grace intimate atriums, ensuring
that one is never far from the soothing melody of falling water. The entire Hotel is non-smoking.
Day 2The Pacuare River Lodge will meet us at 6:30 AM at the Grano De Oro and we'll head out towards thelegendary Talamanca Mountains and around the active Turialba volcano. After about an hour and a half we'll
stop for breakfast and change into our rafting clothing. We then will proceed to the Pacuare River for our safety briefing and a 10: am put-in. We are off on a 2 hour rafting trip on class 2 and 3 rapids, (moderate), a great way
to start off the day. Along the way we are sure to see river wildlife in this rainforest reserve.
We'll arrive around noon and get settled into our bungalows. Each couple will have their own bungalow andtwo beds. There is no electricity in the bungalows but the staff will light the candles in your rooms at dusk to
welcome you home. All the bungalows are meticulously maintained and feature fine linens and verycomfortable mattresses and pillows. This is truly the finest example of rustic luxury in the jungle. Lunch wil
be ready for us on their deck overlooking the river. (The food here is outstanding).

primitive state, here you will experience that most coveted of travelers’ rewards, an opportunity to savor thespirit of a place. The Pacuare Lodge’s nineteen bungalows and main lodge were designed and constructed to

After lunch we’ll gather in 2 forum style discussions, one for parents and one for the kids. This facilitatedshared experience meeting is to check in with the kids, and the parents and set a base line for each of us to
measure what we have achieved. Discussions are centered around the contents of the letter we wrote to our partners including our expectations and desires for our relationship, perceptions on our current relationship, and
discussion about challenges in our relationships and what’s going great.
Late afternoon – relax in your bungalow or playtime on the grounds, in the river, or hike to a waterfall.
The second evening features a social gathering in the upper lounge of the lodge followed by a candlelight
private dinner (only one couple per table). This is a relationship reflection dinner where participants are provided a list of topics to discuss and explore. Bedtime is your decision…….but, day three is a BIG day!

Day 3Day three starts off with a 7:00 AM wake up call, a fantastic river-side breakfast, and preparations for our
morning activity, Challenge-by-Choice (Parent and child eco-challenge)
Parent and child will go through different activities designed to test our personal boundaries such as rappelling
down a waterfall, flying from tree to tree by zipline high up in the rainforest, repel down a Cebar Tree, raft fromthe cable (gondola) to the lodge in inflatable kayaks , cross a stream on a cable, and conclude with planting atree. The child is the team leader providing the instructions; the parent will follow the directions from their
child. Supporting each other in not doing a challenge is as important as completing it.
After lunch we have a series of activates focused on Values Exploration, Partner Interviews and Breakthroughs,
Lessons Learned and Moving Forward. Dinner is followed by riverside bon fire party with guitar music.
Day 4 We’ll bring to your bungalow coffee and hot chocolate at 7:00 AM. Prior to breakfast we’ll all do a 20 – 30minute morning reflection walk with your partner, in silence. Following breakfast, between 9:30-10:00 AM
we’ll have a closing activity, then depart by raft for a fun-filled, exciting day of white water rafting(approximately 3½ hours over class III-IV rapids). The day includes a delicious deli-style lunch on the river
banks.
