The Spirit of the Lord is upon me! There is a saying that goes like this: “A priest sees men at their best; a lawyer sees men at their worst; and

a doctor sees men as they are.” St. Luke was a physician. He saw the human race as it really is and loved

people anyway. St. Luke was a scholarly gentile. Legend claims that he was also a painter. There is a

painting of Our Lady in a Spanish cathedral, which is purported to have been painted by Luke.

The opening statement of today’s gospel was written in Greek – beautiful, formal Greek. It is the best Greek

in the whole New Testament. Luke uses the pronoun, “I.” He takes personal ownership of the narrative.

The work is dedicated to an important personage of the time, Theophilus. Luke claims the goal of

supporting the religious instruction Theophilus had already received.

In this beautiful gospel, in his beginning words, Luke is teaching an important lesson. He is transmitting

the story of Jesus Christ. He will not be careless in his presentation. He has researched, documented, and

verified the story he will tell. He uses vivid, concrete details to captivate his readers. He has followed the

model of the greatest historians, like Herodotus. His work is evidence that he is writing the greatest story

in the world, and nothing but his best effort is good enough for it.

Through our Baptism, each one of us is called to communicate the story of Jesus. Like Luke, we are called

to be compassionate with the recipients of our message. Like Luke, we are called to be accurate and to

ensure the accuracy of what we tell. Like Luke, we are called to spread this story through our best efforts.

We do not bring the gospel to anyone, if we sit with folded hands and lazy minds and wait for God to do

the work. We spread the Good News through the use of our best efforts joined with the revealing power of

the Holy Spirit.

Vio a

Prayer to the Blessed Sacrament I thank you, Lord Holy Father, Almighty and eternal God,

because even though I am a sinful servant and without any

merit, you have wanted to nourish me mercifully with the

body and blood of your son, Our Lord Jesus Christ. May

this sacred communion not be for my occasion of

punishment but cause of forgiveness and salvation. May it

be for my armor of faith, shield of good will; May I be

freed from all my vices and help me overcome my

disordered passions; May my charity and my patience

increase my obedience and humility, and my ability to do

good. Let it be a defense against all my enemies, visible

and invisible; and guide of all my impulses and desires.

May I unite more intimately with you, the only true God

and lead me safely to the banquet of heaven, where you,

with your son and the Holy Spirit, are true light, fulfilled

satisfaction, lasting joy and perfect happiness. Amen

alguno, has querido alimentarme misericordiosamente

aumente mi caridad y mi paciencia mi obediencia y

defensa contra todos mis enemigos, visibles e invisibles;

íntimamente a ti, único y verdadero Dios y me conduzca

cumplida gozo perdurable y felicidad perfecta. Amen
