Upcoming Events
The next Parish Council meeting will be this Monday, March 13 in the cafeteria at 7:30pm.
Our next Parish Food Drive will be held the weekend of March 25-26, 2017 and will be distributed to Father English Community Center.
On Thursday, March 30, 2017 there will be a Youth Retreat from 5pm-10pm in St. Mary’s Assumption auditorium. All high school students are welcome! The cost is $10.
The ―Mother to Mother‖ meetings take place every Thursday, in Spanish from 10am– 11:30am in St. Mary’s Cafeteria. Some of the main topics are improving health, parenting and managing stress. All are wel-come.

CATHOLIC CHARITIES You Did it For Me
John* got to work early. It was still dark. Leav-ing his warm car for the chilly air outside, he approached the entry to Catholic Charities. Then he noticed something in the alley: a plas-tic tarp swaying over a couple of pallets. Sud-denly, he realized it was a makeshift bed. So he asked, ―Are you ok?‖ The man said, ―Yea. Can I stay? It’s safe here.‖ John said yes and couldn’t help thinking: ―Even though we’re closed, he came here knowing he’d be safe. Isn’t that part of what we do: provide comfort and safety? It’s a good thing to be known for.‖
In 2015, Catholic Charities agencies provided 99,266 adults with shelter services.

Eventos Parroquiales
Nuestro salón parroquial, que queda en la 181 First Street, se renta los sábados durante el año. Por favor llame o visite la oficina parro-quial para mas información.
La próxima reunión del Consejo Parroquial será este lunes, 13 de marzo a las 7:30pm en la cafetería.
Nuestra próxima Colecta de Comida Parro-quial se llevará a cabo el fin de semana del 25 y 26 de marzo y será distribuido al Father English Centro de Comunidad.
El Grupo de Oración de Sta. María se reúne los martes empezando con la misa de las 7pm hasta las 9pm. Todos están invitados. Tam-bién, la Asamblea de Oración se lleva a cabo todos los primeros domingos a las 3pm.
El jueves, 30 de marzo, tendremos un reti-ro para jóvenes a partir de la 5pm hasta las 10pm. Todos los jóvenes en la escuela se-cundaria están bienvenidos a participar. El retiro se llevara a cabo en el auditorio de la Asunción de Sta. María y el costo es $10.
CARIDADES CATÓLICAS Tu lo hiciste por mí
John empezó a trabajar temprano. Todavía estaba os-curo. Dejando su cálido coche por el frío aire exterior, se acercó a la entrada de Catholic Charities. Entonces notó algo en el callejón: una lona de plástico que se ba-lanceaba sobre un par de paletas. De repente, se dio cuenta de que era una cama improvisada. Entonces él preguntó: ―¿Estás bien?‖ El hombre dijo: ―Sí. ¿Me pue-do quedar? Es seguro aquí. John dijo que sí y no podía dejar de pensar: ―Aunque estamos cerrados, vino aquí sabiendo que estaría a salvo. ¿No es eso parte de lo que hacemos: proporcionar comodidad y seguridad? Es algo bueno que nos conocen por.‖

REGULACIONES DE CUARESMA 2017 1. Los días de abstinencia y de ayuno, durante la Cuaresma son el miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo. Los otros viernes de Cuaresma son días de abstinencia.—En un día de ayuno solo esta permitida una (1) comida complete. Entre 18 y 59 años están obli-gados a ayunar. En un día de abstinencia no se puede comer carne. Los que han llega-do a la edad de 14 años están obligados de hacer abstinencia. 2. La obligación de observar las leyes de abstinencia y de ayuno “sustancialmente” o en su conjunto, es una obligación grave. 3. Los viernes del año, fuera de la Cuaresma, son días de penitencia, pero cada indivi-duo puede sustituir la tradicional abstinencia de carne u otro de las privaciones vo-luntarias como penitencia. 4. El tiempo de cumplir el precepto pascual se extiende desde el primer domingo de Cuaresma, marzo 5, 2017 a la Solemnidad de la Santísima Trinidad, junio 11, 2017.
OPERACIÓN TAZA DE ARROZ Una pequeña señal tangible de nuestra oración y sacrificios se encuentra en las cajitas para llenar con su donación (no arroz) y devueltos para los pobres hambrientos al fi-nal de Cuaresma.
Historia de San Leandro de Sevilla—13 de marzo
La próxima vez que recitas el Credo Niceno en la Misa, piensa en el santo de hoy. Porque fue Leandro de Sevilla quien, como obispo, introdujo la práctica en el siglo VI. Lo vio como una forma de ayudar a reforzar la fe de su pueblo y como un antídoto contra la herejía del arrianismo, que negaba la divinidad de Cristo. Al final de su vida, Leandro había ayudado al cristianismo a flore-
cer en España en una época de agitación política y religiosa.
La propia familia de Leandro estaba fuertemente influenciada por el arrianismo, pero él mismo creció para ser un ferviente cristiano. Entró en un monasterio como un jo-ven y pasó tres años en la oración y el estudio. Al final de ese período tranquilo fue he-cho obispo. Durante el resto de su vida trabajó arduamente para luchar contra la he-rejía. La muerte del rey anticristiano en 586 ayudó a la causa de Leandro. Él y el nue-vo rey trabajaron mano a mano para restaurar la ortodoxia y un renovado sentido de moralidad. Leandro consiguió persuadir a muchos obispos arios para cambiar sus lealtades. Leandro murió alrededor de 600. En España, es homenajeado como Doctor de la Iglesia.
Reflexión: Mientras rezamos el Credo Niceno todos los domingos, podríamos refle-xionar sobre el hecho de que esa misma oración no sólo es orada por todos los católi-cos de todo el mundo, sino también por muchos otros cristianos. San Leandro intro-dujo su recitación como medio de unir a los fieles. Oremos para que la recitación pue-da mejorar esa unidad hoy.

REGULATIONS OF LENT 2017 1. The days of abstinence and fasting, during Lent are Ash Wednesday and Good Fri-day. The other Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence.—On a day of fasting only one (1) complete meal is allowed. Between the ages of 18 and 59 one is obliged to fast. In a day of abstinence you can not eat meat. Those who have reached the age of 14 are re-quired to adhere to the rules of abstinence. 2. The obligation to observe the laws of abstinence and fasting "substantially" or as a whole is a grave obligation. 3. On Fridays of the year, outside of Lent, they are days of penance, but each individu-al can substitute this for traditional abstinence from meat or another voluntary form of deprivation as penance. 4. The time to fulfill the paschal precept extends from the first Sunday of Lent, March 5, 2017 to the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity, June 11, 2017.

Saint Leander of Seville’s Story—March 13
The next time you recite the Nicene Creed at Mass, think of today’s saint. For it was Leander of Seville who, as bishop, introduced the practice in the sixth century. He saw it as a way to help reinforce the faith of his people and as an antidote against the heresy of Arianism, which denied the divinity of Christ. By the end of his life, Leander had helped Christianity flourish in
Spain at a time of political and religious upheaval.
Leander’s own family was heavily influenced by Arianism, but he himself grew up to be a fervent Christian. He entered a monastery as a young man and spent three years in prayer and study. At the end of that tranquil period he was made a bishop. For the rest of his life he worked strenuously to fight against heresy. The death of the anti-Christian king in 586 helped Leander’s cause. He and the new king worked hand in hand to restore orthodoxy and a renewed sense of morality. Leander succeeded in persuading many Arian bishops to change their loyalties.
Leander died around 600. In Spain, he is honored as a Doctor of the Church.
Reflection
As we pray the Nicene Creed every Sunday, we might reflect on the fact that that same prayer is not only being prayed by every Catholic throughout the world, but by many other Christians as well. Saint Leander introduced its recitation as a means of uniting the faithful. Let’s pray that the recitation may enhance that unity today.
