This year the auction list was nothing short of outstanding; vintage bottles of Grange, boat trip to Rotto, Swan River cruise catered by Kate Lamont, holiday packages and a share in a Race Horse syndicate.

There was plenty of interest in the auction, auctioneer John Garland was in fine form and ensured that bidding was very strong. The feature item on the auction was the share in the Racing Syndicate which was bid and won by a keen punter for the sum of $21,000, which set a new record for any individual auction item. We would like to acknowledge the generous donation of this auction item by Eddie Rigg and Giesel Park Stud.

A day at the races would not be the same without a little flutter on the fillies and there was always a crowd around the betting totes. Judging by the cheers and smiles there were plenty of winners on the day, but by far the biggest winner was Passages as the final result exceeded all expectations with $95,000 raised. This was a tremendous result, a new record for the Race Day and brings the total raised over the past six years to $345,000.

Passages would like to thank all those who attended and supported the Race Day, in particular our loyal Race Day Sponsors who have provided generous support over many years. In addition we would like to acknowledge the support and help of our corporate supporters Linc Integrated and Perth Racing. St Andrew’s Australia Pty Ltd, a leading Australian Insurer, celebrated Christmas in July by supporting Passages Resource Centre Northbridge. St Andrew’s staff donated a variety of goods that were really appreciated by the young people attending the service. These items included: Toiletries, sunglasses, purses, quiz books, blankets, thongs, socks and lollies.

The weather gods finally smiled upon the supporters and guests who attended the 2011 Passages Race Day at Belmont Park Race Course on Saturday May 21. After three years of rain, 221 people frocked up on a beautiful autumn day to enjoy Hats, Fascinators, Fillies and Fun. Nick Way again performed brilliantly as our MC and certainly geed everyone up for the auctions.

The unique and important work of Passages in Northbridge is only highlighted by the recent decision to grow this service to the Peel region with a new Passages opening in Davey Street, Mandurah in the not too distant future. This vision was made possible thanks greatly to the generosity of Jack Bendat OAM.

In May our sixth annual Passages Race Day titled “Hats, Fascinators, Fillies and Fun” was held at Belmont Park Race Course and was the most successful Race Day ever held. $95,000 was raised to support the services provided by Passages for street present young people aged 12-25 years.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to Ashley Ladner from the Rotary Club of Perth and the PR & Fundraising team at the St Vincent de Paul Society for their efforts in organising the Race Day, all the platinum, gold and silver sponsors, all guests who attended and the individuals and companies who donated items for the auctions in particular Eddie Rigg owner of Geisel Park who donated a 10% share for three years in a thoroughbred horse syndicate. The outstanding success of the event would not have been possible without all those who contributed so generously.

Next year’s Passages Race Day is on Saturday 19 May 2012 and we look forward to your continued support.

Inside this edition you will also read about Passages being chosen as the “Charity of Choice” for St John of God Hospital, the new Breakfast Club program and the activities organised with Youth Futures.

To all the staff, committee members, donors and supporters who contribute to the successful running of Passages Resource Centre, thank you greatly. Your support is integral in helping young people access the resources they require to live a happy and healthy life and have opportunities that should be available to everyone including safe and secure accommodation, education and employment.

In closing I would like to wish you and your families a very safe, happy and joyous Christmas and New Year and thank you all for your ongoing support of the Passages Resource Centre in Northbridge.

Yours sincerely

For the past four years Passages clients have participated in the unique photographic experience, ‘Home is Where the Heart is’ which is a collaboration between the Youth Affairs Council of Western Australia (YACWA) and Propel Youth Arts WA.

The exhibition is the culmination of a project that partners young emerging photographers with young homeless people, who are asked to take a photo that captures their interpretation of home.

Two Passages clients participated in the program this year and also attended the exhibition launch. ‘Molly’ and ‘Thomas’ gained involvement in the program by expressing interest in photography and Passages staff members encouraged them to pursue this by participating in ‘Home Is Where the Heart is’.

Each client was mentored and encouraged to understand light, aperture and composition and how these creative elements affect the way we read a photograph. ‘Molly’ and ‘Thomas’ each had a large-scale print displayed at the exhibition and several smaller prints, with all profits from the sales of their prints being donated back to Passages.

Chairman’s Report Healthy CookingThe Healthy Cooking program remains to be Passages longest and most favourite program by clients and staff. Every Tuesday between 1pm to 3pm a small group of clients are supervised by staff in preparing, cooking and sharing the healthy meal they cooked together.

Since the beginning of 2011, the Australian Red Cross and their unique program FOODcents have provided a welcome enthusiasm to the Healthy Cooking program. FOODcents has been implemented for 4-6 weeks at a time and involves fun, creative and educational activities as well as preparing a variety of nutritious food.

During April Passages staff set a challenge for the FOODcents program of cooking meals that cost no more than $20 or had less than 6 ingredients. The meals also included ingredients that clients at Passages could easily access such as baked beans, tuna or other preserved goods.

The staff from FOODcents went above and beyond to achieve this challenge and the clients enjoyed experimenting with different types of ingredients.

FOODcents are finishing up their third term with Passages and this term clients have made spaghetti, honey soy chicken stir-fry and cooked healthy beef burgers with a twist.

Passages staff are planning on inviting FOODcents back in the new year and continuing the Healthy Cooking program.

Welcome to the December edition of the Passages Resource Centre newsletter. It is hard to believe that another year has gone by so quickly. 2011 has been a busy and active year for Passages with an increase in the number of young people calling on the support and opportunities provided by the service.

Support for PassagesPassages Resource Centre is excited to announce that St John of God Hospital Murdoch and St John of God Hospital Subiaco have both chosen the service as their “Charity of Choice” for the next financial year. This partnership will engage St John of God Hospital staff in the great work of Passages for the next 12 months. St John of God Hospital Murdoch will be supporting the new service in the Peel area – Passages Peel and St John of God Hospital Subiaco will be supporting the existing Passages Resource Centre in Northbridge. Where possible the partnership aims to engage staff in the Passages Resource Centre program and work through fundraising and corporate volunteering opportunities.

Breakfast Club Breakfast Club was initiated by staff at Passages after they identified a need for some of the younger clients that were struggling with street life. Since its inception Breakfast Club has taken place every Tuesday and Thursday morning and Passages is always a hive of activity. Staff have found that through meeting this basic need for the young people, it has created a great opportunity to open dialogue and build rapport, helping staff to engage clients with using other services.

Mental Health Week 2011 – ‘Stress Less Day’

Homeless CensusThe Passages Team helped gather accurate statistics for Census 2011 by going out at night to collect data from the homeless population of Perth, in the week before Census night and the week of the Census, from Monday to Thursday. Passages staff also supported young people with filling out their census form during the day on 9 August 2011 at the Passages facility.

People sleeping rough are often difficult to count for a number of reasons, for example because people bed down

at different times, are often moving from one place to another or are in squats or parks. It is also difficult to quantify the level of couch surfing and those who are sharing accommodation on largely temporary basis.

These statistics help Government to explore where interventions on homelessness have worked and also where resources need to be strengthened.

Passages went under a transformation in the name of Mental Health Week, turning the lounge room into a chill out space, hallways into bulletin boards and notice boards into inspirational messages.

Young people were given the opportunity to talk about mental health how it affects them and their friends and family. Passages staff set up posters around the centre, giving young people the opportunity to express their feelings, off loading their worries on the “Worry Tree”, and relax and listen to music in the chill out room.

The aim of the day was to promote positive mental health, while at the same time allowing a forum to discuss with clients their mental health.

We would not have achieved the success we did without the generosity of our sponsors and their guests, our corporate supporters and the myriad of individuals and companies of

A newsletter from Passages Resource Centre

The first activity revolved around the young people’s passion for animals and the environment. This passion took the staff and clients on an amazing adventure through Caversham Wildlife Park in which everyone enjoyed petting some of Australia’s native animals such as possums, koalas, kangaroos and a wombat. In addition, the group were able to watch a live show that involved sheering a sheep and milking a cow. The day was a happy occasion with lots of laughs and fun. The highlight of the day was unanimous as everyone loved feeding the hundreds of Kangaroos and two Donkeys available.

The second activity was an attempt to engage minds and taste buds. Staff invited the young people to dine at one of Northbridge’s favourite Yum Cha restaurants. Once there the young people were a mixture of excitement and amusement. They enjoyed trying all the different types of food and the overall atmosphere.

During the planning process both services identified that the young people may need assistance in

learning new ways of coping with stress. In doing so for the third activity, the young people were invited to a day of pampering which started with a visit to the ACDC exhibition at the Western Australian Museum where young people were able to pay tribute to one of their favourite bands. After that the young people were treated to a 15 minute massage of their choice in which a few cherished the peace and quiet. The day finished with delicious and organic burgers from Jus Burgers and gave the young people an opportunity to talk openly about the day.

The program went from strength to strength and ended with the fourth and final activity, a visual arts day in Fremantle. The young people were given a camera for the day and were encouraged to take photos of their journey around Fremantle. In addition to this clients were treated to morning tea and shown through one of Fremantle’s favourite art galleries. After that the young people decided to visit the maritime museum and enjoyed learning about maritime history. To finish off the day the young people visited the beach and ate fish and chips.
