Keeping your kids fit for the summer Summer is here and fortunately it’s the easiest time to get your kids involved in physical activities. There are several fun things to do that will keep your kids fit and healthy during this time of year. Some are free and some have a minimal charge. Find out what works best for your family to ensure good health for everyone. Here are some ideas: Go outside and play – Playing outside is always free of charge. If you have a backyard or live near a park or open field, you can play a game of tag or toss around a football. By the time you get home the kids will definitely be ready for bed. Go for a walk ‐ After dinner is a good time to go for a brisk walk and continue a conversation started while eating. This is also a great way to open up the lines of communication between parents and children. Sports/Training Camps – Ask your children if they would like to try a sport. Check with your local YMCA or Boys and Girls Club to find out what they have to offer. There is usually a member/nonmember charge to participate in camps such as these. Childhoodobesityisarealdiseasethathasmorethantripledinthelast30years.Inchildrenages6‐11itincreasedfrom6.5%in1980to19.6%in2008.Inadolescentsages12‐19itincreasedfrom5%to18.1%duringthesametimeframe.

CedricandAishawerecollegesweetheartsatSouthernIllinoisUniversityatCarbondaleandarenowbothemployedbyandcandidatesforthePhDattheUniversityofArkansasinFayetteville.Ifthatisnotenough,their5year‐oldtwins,MekhiandKyran,makesuretheystaygoodandbusy.

AK:Collegetownshavebeenverygoodforus.Theyhavegreatschoolsforchildren.Arkansasmaybealittlelightonthesocialaspectforthemorematurecrowdbutasfarasthingsforelementaryagechildrenithasbeengreat.Theboyshaveplayedsoccer,theyareininvolvedinagreatsummerprogramandtheyhavetakengymnasticslessons.Nextist‐ball,martialartsandpiano.Theywillbeverywellroundedlittlemen!

AK:Itisimportanttoustobeinshapeandtoteachourchildrenthatbeingactiveisapartofhealthyliving.WedowatchTVbutwewouldmuchratherbeplayingordoingsomethingthatkeepsusallmoving.

TKAT:HowdoyouandCedricfindtimetoexercisewithyourbusyschedules?

AK:Exerciseservesadualpurposeforme,itkeepsmefitanditalsohelpsmealleviatestress.Ithinkwebothfeelthatitisimportanttostayactive,eatrightandstayfit.Becauseweareinour30’sittakesabitmoretoloseweightandittakesmoreintentionalactionandplanningtokeepmoving.Webothwanttobearoundtowatchourboysgrowup,getmarriedandhavetheirownchildren.Wecan’tdothatifwedon’ttakecareofourselves.

TKAT:Howdoyoukeeptheboysactivewithsuchdemandingcareers?

AK:MekhiandKyranareournumberonepriority.Wewanttobeasgoodorbetterparentsasweareprofessionals.Wemaybetiredsometimesbutweknowthatourboyswillbenefitfrominvolvementandultimatelywewillaswell.
