symbol of humans transcendence and sublimation guided by belief and faith. Such an action, however,

is challenging to the artists body. The materialized body is physiological and instinctive, and the

artists clothes become a metaphor of the body.

During his performance, He Yunchang puts himself in a dangerous relation, where the flammable

clothes could get out of control and imperil the body as a material being at any time. The slow and

tense course set up by the artist pulls the audience repeatedly from the burning, the symbol of hope

and holiness, to the physical taboo. The samsara between ignition and extinguishment keeps going as

time goes by. The control and shaping of extremity in He Yunchangs works is transformed into a form

of communication to be experienced, which endows the audience with a hypothetic self-imagination.

Such an impact stems from the resources and languages the artist draws from real life, from his

pursuit of the classical force, his renewed experience of reality, and the noble pureness and greatness

    in belief.

The nirvana of phoenix, after all, is a historical legend. No matter how hard the righteous cause or

big love tries to redeem the world in the abyss of misery, sacrificing life for righteousness will

inevitably face the pang when life clashes against reality, which is as real as the bodys burn inflicted by

the fire. The flesh and blood is as vivid as fire, and also as heavy.

Life is so short in the vast river of time, and ideals break into countless sparks in the ever-

changing world: ten thousand years are too long, seize the day and seize the hour.

Down the altars, the classical transcendence and belief symbolized by Nirvana could either be a

subject of suspicion or a force of suspicion.
