A Matter of BalanceTuesdays & Thursdays, October 6 - 29, 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.Quarry Hill, 30 Community Drive, CamdenMany older adults have concerns about falling and restrict their activities. A Matter of Balance is an award-winning workshop designed to manage falls and increase activity levels. During this eight-session class, participants will learn to view falls as controllable, set goals for increasing activity, make changes to reduce fall risks at home and exercise to increase strength and balance. This workshop is designed for adults age 60 and older. It’s perfect for anyone who is concerned about falls, has fallen in the past, is restricting activity because of falling concerns, or is simply interested in improving balance, flexibility and strength. Parkinson’s Disease & Movement Disorders Education & Support GroupTuesday, October 13, 10:00 to 11:30 a.m.Home Health Conference Room, 125 Northport Avenue, BelfastGuest speaker Janelle Michaud of Medtronic will speak about Deep Brain Stimulation. Medtronic makes the Deep Brain Stimulation implant, which is essentially a pacemaker for the brain to treat movement disorders such as Parkinson’s and Essential Tremor. Maine Medical Center has the first comprehensive Deep Brain Stimulation center in Maine. The talk is open to the public and will last about an hour. Refreshments will be served. Join Amy Libby, LCSW, for this 6-week cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) program for the treatment of insomnia. CBT for Insomnia is based on over 20 years of research and clinical practice by Gregg Jacobs, PhD, at Harvard Medical School and the University of Massachusetts. CBT is based on a central theme: insomnia can only be treated by addressing the underlying causes and changing thoughts and behaviors around sleep. Participants can expect to learn the biology of sleep and the stress response system, how to challenge sleep thoughts and behaviors, sleep scheduling, lifestyle habits, and relaxation techniques that improve sleep. Oncology Walk and Basket RaffleSunday, October 18, Registration at Noon, Walk at 1:00 p.m.Waldo County General Hospital, 118 Northport Avenue, BelfastThe walk supports cancer patients undergoing treatment and honors survivors and those lost to cancer. Tickets for the basket raffle will be on sale in the hospital’s classroom beginning Monday, October 12, and will be on sale until October 17. Tickets are $1 each, 6 for $5 or 15 for $10. All proceeds go to the Oncology Patient Assistance Fund and the Mammography Fund. The Oncology Patient Assistance Fund helps patients defray the cost of cancer treatments. The Mammography Fund helps pay for mammograms and breast biopsies for patients with no insurance or insurance with a high deductible. Registration is free. Your Life, Your Choice: Advance Care PlanningThursdays, October 22 & 29, 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Picker Family Resource CenterThe Picker Family Resource Center will offer a free two-part series on advance care planning. During session one, participants will learn about the decisions people often face at the end of life. Participants will be guided through a discussion to better understand and reflect on their goals and wishes for end of life care. The Maine Health Care Directive form will also be reviewed. During session two, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions about advance care planning and work one on one with a trained facilitator to begin completing an advance directive.
