Early Sunday morning, two portable toilets in DepotPark were set on fire. This latest instance of destructionof city property has prompted city officials to consider

taking stronger measures to curb vandalism.All the more reason to get those security cameras,said Mayor Joe Luginski during the City Council meetingon Dec. 10.

The Depot Park gazebo, playground, and city hallbuilding have also been targets for vandalism this year,but the council has only discussed installing surveillance

visitors to Indian Springs Metropark these days. Oil rigoperators have been frequenting the park in bothSpringfield and White Lake townships.

Jordan Development, an oil and gas company fromTraverse City, has drilled one exploratory well just off ofTeggerdine Road and will likely bore more holes in theground around the park. The companys sights arentonly set on Indian Springs, however.

Chris Bickley of Jordan Development intended to

share a presentation with Independence Township Boardof Trustees on potential oil exploration in Independence,on Dec. 18.

Jordan entered into an oil and gas lease with theHuron-Clinton Metropolitan Authority (HCMA) in 2011.To lease the entire 2,134 acres of the park, the HCMA willreceive $150 per acre, or $320,199 upfront, and one quarterof the royalties from any valuable minerals found beneaththe ground.

In June 2012, Jordan drilled approximately 5,000 feetunder the ground of Indian Springs to determine thepotential of striking oil. Now, they have other well sitesin mind, and the HCMA has agreed to let Jordan keepsearching.

Jordan has continued to sign leases with privateproperty owners throughout Springfield Township, andthey were also able to acquire leases from the PontiacLake state park lands, said Indian Springs Metropark

engineer Mike Arens.Arens, who observed oil-producing wells inKensington Metropark and the one exploratory well inIndian Springs, described his experiences with West BayExploration, another Traverse City company thatfrequently partners with Jordan Development.
