    IMPACT OF NUTRITIONAL

    SUPPLEMENTS ON

    HEMATOLOGICAL PROFILE

    OF PREGNANT WOMEN

    ABSTRACT

    Eighty one pregnant women (202 weeks of

    gestation) were assessed for their nutritional sta-tus. They were divided into three groups; Group I

    women (n=30) were given 200 mg ferrous

    sulphate (FeSO4 tablet per day for 15 weeks,

    Group II women (n=25) were given FeSO4 tab-

    lets along with 2,00,000 IU of vitamin A as

    single dose in beginning of study; and Group III

    women (n=26) were not given any supplements

    and served as controls. To study impact of sup-

    plements on hematological profile of pregnant

    women, Hb, PCV, RBC, TS%, TIBC and serum

    levels of iron, zinc, copper, manganese and vita-

    min A were assessed at 202 weeks and 362

    weeks of gestation by standard techniques. Preg-

    niques. Serum minerals (iron, Zn, Cuand Mn) were determined by atomic ab-sorption spectrophotometer after wet di-gestion by the method of Piper(4). TIBC

    was estimated by the method of Teitz(5).Serum vitamin A was determined bymethod of Kimbe(6). The subjects weredivided into three groups making surethat each group had pregnant womenwith more or less identical nutritionalstatus at 202 weeks of gestation.

    Pregnant women who were willingto come to the hospitals/centres once aweek to collect iron supplements andconsume them regularly were includedin Groups I and II. Rest of the subjectswho were not willing to take supple-

    ments were included in the controlgroup. The various groups were: (i)Group I: Iron supplemented (Fe suppl) - 30

    women were given one tablet of 200 mgFeSO4 per day (containing 60 mg ele-mental iron and 500 jug folk acid) for a

    period of 15 weeks; (ii) Group II: Iron +

    vitamin A suplemented (Fe + vit A suppl) -

    25 women were given 2,00,000 IU of vi-tamin A as a single dose along with 200mg FeSO4 per day for a period of 15weeks; and (iii) Group III: Control - 26

    women who did not receive any supple-ments served as controls.

    The mean and standard errors ofmean were computed for all the parame-ters. The significance of difference in themeans of various indices was first testedby analysis of variance (F test), when thevalues of 'F' were significant, it was fol-lowed by a modified 'ttest.

    Results

    In the present investigation, the he-moglobin (Hb) levels of subjects varied

    from 8.0 to 13.5 g/dl at T1 and 7.8 to 13.2g/dl at T2. The mean value of Hb at T1

    was 10.12 g/dl in subjects of all the threegroups. At T2 the Hb values increased to10.4 and 10.7 g/dl in iron supplementedand iron+vit A supplemented groups,

    respectively. However, Hb levels de-creased to 9.5 g/dl in control group. Asimilar trend was observed in case ofpacked cell volume (PCV) and red bloodcell (RBC) count (Table I). The values ofHb, PCV and RBC count were below thenormal range both at T1and T2

    At T2, serum zinc levels decreasedwhereas levels of copper and manganeseincreased in all the three groups.

    The mean serum vitamin A levels at

    T1 were between 31.25 to 32.23 g/dl inall the groups. At T2, the levels increasedto 39 g/dl in Fe + vitamin A supple-mented group. However, in other twogroups it decreased to 27.2 M-g/dl.

    Discussion

    The present study shows that at 36 2 weeks of gestation the levels of Hb,PCV and RBC increased in supplement-ed groups and decreased in controlgroup. Similar observations were-report-ed in studies conducted at NIN(3,12).

    en. Whenever iron supplementation iscontemplated for expectant mothers, vi-tamin A supplementation should gohand in hand to achieve maximum bene-

    fit.
