Chitose Airport

Day 1: Mon – HONOLULU. Depart Honolulu via Hawaiian Airlines flt #441 at 1:30 pm.

Day 2: Tue – CHITOSE. Arrive in Chitose International Airport at 5:00 pm. After entry formalities, walk to your hotel located within the airport terminal. AIR TERMINAL HOTEL (1 Night)

Day 3: Wed – CHITOSE – FURANO – BIEI – ASAHIDAKE. After a sumptuous breakfast buffet at your hotel, depart for Asahidake. Enroute, stop at the Sunagawa Highway Oasis, a shopper’s paradise on the way to Asahikawa, for an opportunity to rest and shop for souvenirs. After lunch, visit Tomita Farm, simply the best spot to enjoy the seasonal flowers in bloom. The Blue Pond, located outside the hot spring town of Shirogane Onsen, is named after its deep blue color, which it owes to natural minerals dissolved in the water. The panoramic flower gardens of “Shikisai-no-Oka” provide spectacular views across the hills of the Biei area. Tonight, relax in the hotel hot springs, before or after dinner. The onsens – which are divided for men and women – allow you to enjoy the hot springs whether indoors or outdoors. The high-quality service and facilities are sure to become some of your fondest memories of your visit to Japan. LA VISTA DAISETSUZAN (1 Night) (B, L, D)

Day 4: Thur – ASAHIDAKE – ASAHIKAWA – SOUNKYO. Begin the morning with a visit to the Asahidake Ropeway for spectacular views of the Autumn Foliage. Enjoy a local favorite for lunch (on your own) at the Asahikawa Ramen Village, where you’ll get to choose the type of ramen lunch you’ll have from one of eight ramen shops. Asahikawa is known for their shoyu based broths, while Sapporo is known for its miso based broths and Hakodate for its salt based broths. Which one will you try? After lunch, visit the Asahiyama Zoo and see some of their unique displays, including the underwater glass penguin tunnels, “seal eye” domes in the polar bear exhibit, and the suspension bridge connecting the lesser panda enclosures. Next we stop at the Otokoyama Sake Museum for a tour of the facilities and tasting of sake and other tasty products. Our destination for the day is Sounkyo, a hot sprIng resort nestled in the middle of Sounkyo Valley. This evening, enjoy a relaxing soak in the hot springs onsen and a sumptuous dinner buffet at your hotel. SOUNKYO HOTEL TAISETSU (1 Night) (B, D)

Day 5: Fri – SOUNKYO – ENGARU – KITAMI – ABSHIRI. After breakfast, visit the nearby Ginga Ryusei Waterfall. The word “Ginga” means “the Milky Way” and the word “Ryusei” means “a shooting star.” Visit the Engaru Cosmos Flower Park and view 10 million + cosmos flower in bloom. After lunch, travel to Kitami. It was peppermint that built Kitami’s economy in the early days. During the peak production in 1938/1939, Kitami’s peppermint accounted for approximately 70% of the global market and became globally recognized as a special produce of Kitami and of Japan. Adjacent to the Kitami Peppermint Museum stands the Mint Distillation House where you can enjoy the aroma of freshly made mint. Next, travel to Lake Notoro Samphire Field and view the stunningly beautiful field of red coral grass. Enjoy a Kaiseki Dinner at the hotel. HOKUTEN NO OKA ABASHIRI TSURUGA RESORT (1 Night) (B, L, D)

Day 6: Sat – ABASHIRI – LAKE AKAN. After breakfast, explore the Omagari Lakeside Park Sunflower Field before visiting the Okhotsk Drift Ice Museum and learning about drift ice. Visit the Abashiri Prison Museum and learn about the conditions the prisoners experienced while incarcerated in this remote location. After lunch, we’re in for a real treat! The sightseeing cruise around Lake Akan is Akan’s most popular tour. From the boat you can see the unspoiled primitive forest that shows natural beauty in each season. At the Spherical Moss Exhibition and Observation Center (Marimo Moss Museum) on Churui Island, you can see the real Moss Ball known as Marimo, a natural treasure in Japan. After arriving at the hotel, walk to the nearby Lake Akan Ainu Kotan, where 120 native Ainu have settled and continue to produce traditional crafts. Master artisans create intricate wood carvings of bears, birds, humans, and the like, which are highly sought out around the world as original Ainu art. These traditional crafts are among Hokkaido’s best known souvenirs. Enjoy a buffet dinner at the hotel. TSURUGA AKAN YUKUNOSATO (1 Night) (B, L, D)

Day 7: Sun – LAKE AKAN – OBIHIRO – TOMAMU. Eat a hearty breakfast as the first stop of the day is at the Ikeda Wine Castle to learn about wine making and tasting samples. Lunch will be a special treat! Everyone will help harvest some local produce, which will contribute to the special BBQ picnic at the farm. After lunch, stop at Rokkatei’s Main Store for an afternoon tea and sweets. Enjoy dinner at the hotel. HOSHINO RESORT TOMAMU (1 Night) (B, L, D)

Day 8: Mon – TOMAMU – SHIRAOI – NOBORIBETSU. An optional “Morning Sea Cloud Ropeway Tour” will be available for the “early riser” that wish to participate. Depart the hotel for the hot springs resort town of Noboribetsu. After lunch, explore the Shiraoi Ainu Museum, an outdoor reproduction of an Ainu Village, where you will see a traditional Ainu song and dance performance. Upon arrival in Noboribetsu, visit Jigokudani or “Hell Valley,” a spectacular, appropriately named valley just above the town, which displays hot steam vents, sulfurous streams and other volcanic activity. It is a main source of Noboribetsu’s hot spring waters. This evening enjoy a soak in the hot spring onsen at the hotel. DAIICHI TAKIMOTOKAN (1 Night) (B, L, D)

Day 9: Tue – NOBORIBETSU – DATE – YOICHI – OTARU – SAPPORO. Depart Noboribetsu for the city of Date and the History and Culture Museum, where you will learn how to dye using indigo. A great

souvenir of your trip! After lunch, stop in the town of Yoichi for the Nikka Whiskey Yoichi Distillery. The company was founded by Taketsuru Masataka, known as the father of Japanese whisky, who studied whisky making techniques for several years in Scotland before bringing the trade to Japan. The Yoichi Distillery was built in 1934, on a site chosen for its clear water, brisk air and rich peat. Taketsuru believed that the conditions in Yoichi best resembled those found in Scotland and would be perfect for recreating Scotch whisky. The traditional distillation process that he brought over is largely unchanged today. Nikka whiskies have been recognized to rank among the world's best single malt whiskies and have won numerous awards. After a tour of the facilities, you’ll be able to try some of their tasty products. Otaru served as a major trade and fishing port in the 1800s. The Otaru Canal makes for a pleasant stroll. Explore the Music Box Museum before visiting the Kitaichi Glass Company, which will delight your eyes with the beautiful creations found there. Non-drip or color changing shoyu bottles are a favorite omiyage gift to bring home. Depart Otaru for Sapporo. Enjoy dinner in Sapporo before checking into the hotel for the evening. Tour #1: SAPPORO GRAND HOTEL EAST BUILDING • Tour #2: KEIO PLAZA HOTEL SAPPORO (3 Nights) (B, L, D)

Day 10: Wed – SAPPORO. Start the day with a brief city tour. Drive by the TV Tower, the Former Government Office Building, Odori Park, and the Clock Tower. For lunch, pick out “LIVE” crabs* at the Sapporo Central Wholesale Market where an abundance of fresh seafood and the freshest local products can be found. After lunch, tour the facilities at Shiroi Koibito Park, a theme park by Ishiya, a local chocolate company. The company's flagship product is the Shiroi Koibito cookie, which consists of two thin butter cookies and a layer of white chocolate in between. It is one of the most famous souvenirs from Hokkaido. Stop at an AEON Mall, where ample time will be given for shopping and dining (on your own), before returning to the hotel for the evening. (B, L)*1 Live crab for every 6th tour member.

Day 11: Thur – SAPPORO. Full Day at Leisure. Looking for more shopping opportunities? Check out the Tanuki Koji Shopping Arcade, the largest and oldest shopping arcade in Sapporo, which houses over 200 shops. Or the 5 story tall Daiso store or Suskino Shopping Area. You’ll also have the chance to explore the Sapporo Autumn Festival held in Odori Park (on your own). (B)

Day 12: Fri – SAPPORO – HONOLULU. Enjoy a morning of leisure before departing the hotel after lunch (on your own). Arrive early at the Chitose Airport and begin exploring the shopping mall located within the Domestic Terminal. Consisting of 4 floors of restaurants, shops and activities, there’s something for everyone. Those with a sweet tooth will enjoy the Sweets Zone, where you can enjoy Hokkaido sweets in a spacious and relaxing setting, and the Royce Chocolate World (factory, museum, shop and bakery) and LeTAO Chocolatier. The kids (and those young at heart) will enjoy the Doraemon Sky Park and Hello Kitty Happy Flight, which have an activity area, shop and café (fees may apply) or the Pokémon store. Uniqlo aims to provide customers with “ultimate casual clothes.” And there are more than two dozen shops at the airport that specialize in various fresh, frozen or dried seafood that can be eaten there or packed for you to bring home. Or you can relax in the airport onsen or movie theater (for a fee). Depart Chitose via Hawaiian Airlines flt #442 at 7:45 pm and arrive Honolulu at 8:10 am the same day. Aloha and Welcome Home! (B)
