I love summer! Summer is hot. It's sun and shade. It's water to wade. It's frogs and bugs. It's grass for rugs. It's eating outside. It's a tree-swing ride. It's tomatoes and corn. It's dew in the morn. It's dogs and boysAnd lots of noise. It's a hot sunny sky. It's summer. That's why.....I love summer.

In the summer when the days are hot,I like to find a shady spot,And hardly move a single bitAnd sit, and sit, and sit, and sit.

Summer

When it's hotI take my shoes offI take my shirt offI take my pants offI take my underwear offI take my whole body offand throw it in the river.

The summer sun in the sky,Shining, shining up so highMakes it warm for outside fun.To play at the park and run,To swim and hike and fish,And to go on a picnic if you wish.

A Year Later

Last summer I couldn't swim at allI couldn't even floatI had to use a rubber tubeOr hang on to a boat;I had to sit on shoreWhen everybody swam; But now it's This summerAnd I can!

Summer brings us nice warm sunFor swimming, fishing, and lots of fun;For finding seashells in the sand; For sunbathing to get a tan;To do all these things and moreAt the beach and seashore.

Vacation

In my head I hear a humming:Summer, summer summer's coming.Soon we're going on vacationBut there is a complication:Day by day the problem's growing-We don't know yet where we're going!

Mother likes the country best; That's so she can read and rest.Dad thinks resting is a bore; He's for fishing at the shore.Sailing is my brother's pick;Sailing makes my sister sick; She says swimming's much more cool,Swimming in a swimming pool.As for me, why, I don't care,I'd be happy anywhere!

In my head I hear a humming:Summer, summer, summer's coming.Soon we're going on vacationBut we have a complication:Day by day the problem's growing-Where oh where will we be going?

Five Busy Honey BeesFive busy honey bees were resting in the sun.

The first one said, "Let us have some fun."The second one said, "Where shall it be?"The third one said, "In the honey tree."The fourth one said, "Let's make some honey sweet."The fifth one said, "With pollen on our feet."The five little busy bees sang their buzzing tune,As they worked in the beehive all that afternoon.Bzzzzzz! Bzzzzzz! Bzzzzzz! Bzzzzzz! Bzzzzzz!

Barefoot Days

by Rachel Field

In the morning, very early,That's the time I love to goBarefoot where the fern grows curlyAnd the grass is cool between each toe,On a summer morning - O!On a summer morning!

That is when the birds go byUp the sunny slopes of air,And each rose has a butterflyOr a golden bee to wear; And I am glad in every toe -Such a summer morning - O!Such a summer morning!

Bed in Summer

by Robert Louis Stevenson

In Winter I get up at night And dress by yellow candle light. In Summer, quite the other way,

I have to go to bed by day.

I have to go to bed and see The birds still hopping on the tree, Or hear the grown-up people's feet Still going past me in the street.

And does it not seem hard to you, When all the sky is clear and blue, And I should like so much to play, To have to go to bed by day?

The Beech Tree

by Rose Fyleman

I'd like to have a gardenWith a beech tree on the lawn; The little birds that lived thereWould wake me up at dawn.

And in the summer weatherWhen all the leaves were green,I'd sit beneath the beach boughsAnd see the sky between.

Fireflies

by Evaleen Stein

Look! Look down in the garden howThe firefly lights are flitting now!A million tiny sparks I knowFlash through the pinks and golden-glow,And I am very sure that allHave come to light a fairy ball,And if I could stay up I'd seeHow gay the fairy folks can be!

In July

by Evaleen Stein

Let us find a shady wadyPretty little brook;Let us have some candy handy,And a picture book.

There all day we'll stay and play andNever mind the heat,While the water gleaming, streaming,Ripples round our feet.

And we'll gather curly pearlyMussel shells while brightFrightened minnows darting, parting,Scurry out of sight.

What if, what if, - heigho! my oh! - All the "ifs" were true,And the little fishes wishes,Now, what would you do?

Summer Morning

by Rachel Field

I saw dawn creep across the sky,And all the gulls go flying by.I saw the sea put on its dressOf blue midsummer loveliness,And heard the trees begin to stirGreen arms of pine and juniper.I heard the wind call out and say:'Get up, my dear, it is today!'

The Birds' Bath

by Evaleen Stein

In our garden we have made Such a pretty little pool,Lined with pebbles neatly laid, Filled with water clean and cool.

When the sun shines warm and high Robins cluster round its brink,Never one comes flying by But will flutter down to drink.

Then they splash and splash and splash, Spattering little showers brightAll around, till off they flash Singing sweetly their delight.

We Have a Little Garden

by Beatrix Potter

We have a little garden,A garden of our own,And every day we water thereThe seeds that we have sown.

We love our little garden,And tend it with such care,You will not find a faded leafOr blighted blossom there.

My Tooth Fell Out A tooth fell out, and left a space So big my tongue could touch my face.

And every time I smile, I show a space where something used to grow.

I miss my tooth as you can guess But then, I have to brush one less!

Fairies

by Evaleen Stein

Grandfather says that sometimes,  When stars are twinkling andA new moon shines, there come times  When folks see fairy-land!

So when there's next a new moon,  I mean to watch all night!Grandfather says a blue moon  Is best for fairy light,

And in a peach-bloom, maybe,  If I look I shall seeA little fairy baby  No bigger than a bee!

If I Were King

by A. A. Milne

I often wish I were a King,And then I could do anything.

If only I were King of Spain,I'd take my hat off in the rain.

If only I were King of France,I wouldn't brush my hair for aunts.

I think, if I were King of Greece,I'd push things off the mantelpiece.

If I were King of Norroway,I'd ask an elephant to stay.

If I were King of Babylon,I'd leave my button gloves undone.

If I were King of Timbuctoo,I'd think of lovely things to do.

If I were King of anything,I'd tell the soldiers, "I'm the King!"

Two More Days til School

by:  Leslie Kimmelman

I'm finally going to school this year, and now the big day's almost here.I'll learn to write and count and read--Only two more days till school.

I got new pants and shirts and socks,a brand-new red and blue lunch box;I'll paint and sing and dance and play--Only one more day fill school.

My hair is washed, my sneakers squeak,I'm so excited, I can hardly speak!New things to do, new friends to meet--Hooray! It's the first day of school!

The Manners Song

tune of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star

We say, "Thank you.” We say, "Please."We don't interrupt or tease.

We don't argue. We don't fuss --Listen when folks talk to us.

Share our toys and take our turn.Manners are easy to learn.

Whole Duty of Children

by Robert Louis Stevenson

A child should always say what's true,And speak when he is spoken to,And behave mannerly at table:At least as far as he is able.

We learned our ABC'sAnd counting 1, 2, 3's.And now we know all these,The kindergarten class.

And we learned how to share. And we learned how to care.Just ask us if you dare,The kindergarten class.

Duh-duh-duh-duh, Duh-duh-duh-duh, Duh-duh-duh-duh, click, click

It seems we've just begunAnd now we're almost done. This year's been so much fun!The kindergarten class.

But we must say so long. With this our little song. But we'll be back ‘fore long. The kindergarten class.

First Grade, First Grade(Sing to the tune of New York, New York. It ends with a kickline.)

Start spreading the news. We're leaving today. We want to be a part of it, First Grade, First Grade.

We're ready to go. We've worked very hard.We want to be a part of it, First Grade, First Grade.

We know our ABCs and 123s so well. We've worked at sounding out wordsAnd stories to tell.

Just ask us to rhyme. We'll say "tens" and "pens".We've learned to share and get along With all our friends.
