Aim:Studies on contract farming in Africa have fora long time been divided between two differentapproaches. While economists dominate therst approach, rural sociologists, anthropologistsand geographers pursue the other. This conference seeks to bring together the differ-ent strands of social science by inviting research-ers and policy makers to engage in a dialogue bydiscussing the strength and weakness of eachof the approaches and by looking for potentialoverlaps and entry points for integrative efforts. It is envisaged that the conference will assist inthe formation of new networks for exchange ofknowledge and experience with contract farmingand rural transformations in Africa.Themes to be discussed: Contract farming and agricultural develop-
