After twenty years of uncontrolled urban sprawl, Japanese cities are now shrink- ing, due to population aging and decline. Tama New Town, situated 30 km from To- kyo center, is suffering from this situation. This satellite city was built in the seven- ties, in the context of an extreme housing shortage during which Japanese planners in search for constructible land did not hesitate to use the Tokyo countryside as a Tabula rasa. In fact, the traditional hilly landscape of the Tama district was thor- oughly modified in order to host a new rigid modernist system, imported from the West. Vehicular circulation was placed

on a lower level, separated from the high- er residential areas by a network of stairs, thus creating a tear dividing the city into different isolated parts. Nevertheless, small communities of farm- ers opposed to the urban development man- aged to keep part of their land. A denser fabric is then visible inside the valleys, opposed to the modernist buildings called danchis , placed on the uplands. This is what we called the Landscape Anachronism: two different scales, two time frames, on two topographical levels. This powerful trace led us towards a program linked to agricul- ture, that reattaches the territory to its his- tory and gets advantage from the strengths of the site: space and greenery. The project forms a third fabric, dug in the topogra- phy, mending the connection between the danchis and the street. Inspired by the tra- ditional Japanese agricultural village, its program is organized in alternating strips containing greenhouses, public services, housing and vegetable gardens. Between each constructed mass, rice paddies form a new landscape for Tama.

The Arctic prison uses Nature as a limit and inverts the current system of the Bar- ents region: environment fragility is not threatened by human, but human fragility is controlled by its environment. After the trip to Norway, we were in- spired by the melancholy and the beauty of Svalbard. We focused on Barentsburg, a shrinking city and an autarkic communi- ty. The goal was to repopulate by giving a new function to a place that makes already think of a prison and to find a balance be- tween the opposed prison systems of Nor- way and Russia. The ideal journey of a prisoner, with a pro- gressive integration into a primary society, goes from Land to Water, from Top to Bot-

tom. The project is then divided into four phases, with a progressive use of common spaces, an evolving detachment from to- pography and changes of materiality. As in the inpiring mining architecture, a wooden structure emerges from a concrete wall on the top. It is the high security area, a building that one leaves and never returns, except to reach the religious area. With an incredi- ble view, it is both the worst and the best place. The medium security area contains the administrative core along the main road, planned as in a typical prison. The low security zone is composed by small communities of cells with generous com- mon spaces and there, inmates start to in- teract with local inhabitants through daily activities in the village. Finally, free cells are spread into the city with complete ac- cess to existing services. As an additional benefit to the city, low se- curity and free cells provide public spaces like viewing platforms and winter gardens, as well as new shops held by inmates.

The project owner, Martin Heidegger is seeking for isolation. The root, a room of the existing dwelling, extends into the penthouse and grows to generate a high- rise annex: a structural tree offering iso- lated and quiet spaces for the client. The project, which develops like a beam for- est, creates a collective terrace on the roof top, a public space shared between all the inhabitants. The annexes represent a two-storey addition to the apartments and a private access to the roof-terrace. Above them, a new floor of flats is creat- ed, leaning on the pre-existing staircases. All dwellings contain an isolated room, a perfect workspace for the philosopher.

The project aims to unify a complex area in the North of Barcelona and offers a new covered passage way on its ground floor. The building shape occupies the whole area of the plot. It accentuates the major routes and creates two different public spaces. Double-orientated apartments and the distribution system give a great regu- larity to the plan and structure. Servant spaces form two continuous strips on both sides of the building. The facade, mainly opened, works as a patchwork and expresses the rigidity of the plan. All measurements are based on a module that also sets the section in motion. Furniture and storage spaces become part of the con- crete slab. The same system is used in the organization of the public spaces.
