This project originally required us to design a linear residential area without a specific location. Owing to the adaptability of the design, the houses were easily modified to cope with the steep incline of the Ciu-tat Diagonal site we were subsequently assigned, which climbs a mountain of Collserola.

Taking this incline into account, we appropriately de-signed two different kinds of house, differentiated by their entrances, one from the ground floor and the other from the first floor. The blocks of houses are all connected by the streets on their respective lev-els. The first floor allow for an additional exterior space, which is intended to be an intermediate, cli-matic place.

The residential housing blocks are all in-terconnected through a network of streets and central squares, organised in such a way as to allow for unrestricted views.

The most important aspect of this project is in its orientation. Situated right in the centre of Molins de Rei, the library has a very tall church, Sant Miquel church, situated directly to the north and a bustling commercial street to the south. Another important char-acteristic of the site to consider is the fact it is on a slight incline.

Subsequently this leaves the library enclosed by the surrounding buildings, so the objective was to create comfortable and intimate spaces, which gets the light from the three interior patios.

Page 7: Portfolio 2014 maria gimenez grau

The multifunctional needs of the modern library are catered for in this design, and kept separate on different floor levels. The ground floor is where the noisiest areas are designated, such as the children’s zone and the casual reading area, along with the auditorium which has been designed with a separate entrance for flexibility of use. Furthermore the basement level contain the library’s offices and study rooms.

This project is located on a cliff in Begur. The brief asks for a house for an architect and his wife, who is a translator; and requires five inde-pendent houses for the hosts. The house has to have both a study for the architect and another one for the wife, which must be separated and also connected by a library. The strong winds are a major consideration in the de-sign of these structures, along with the need to pro-vide different views, whilst finding the best solution to the problem of the natural slope of the site. The house is approached by means of a trail that winds through the forest, so upon arrival at the house one is greeted with views to the sea that were concealed beforehand.

The challenge presented by this project was to maxi-mally economical with the spatially limited site that we were assigned. The brief called for the provision of 180 homes, along with shops, offices, a nursery, a lei-sure area, a restaurant, a gym, and a swimming pool. The site is bordered by a park and residential buildings. The key to this project is found within its triads, which can be seen in my designing of three different communal spaces, three different types of houses with three different facades, containing three variants of floor layouts. This is absolutely crucial because it creates diversity for the plurality of potential users.

3 TYPES OF HOUSES

The project pursues the most diversity possible, so I designed three different types of house from a basic shared form, the square, which I then modi-fied a little to accommodate the car parking struc-ture, so I got dimensions of 5x5m and 5x6m.

The facade has been designed to align with the uses of the rooms, so there are three kinds of window. The biggest window belongs to that of the living room, with two smaller ones for the children’s bedroom and a further modestly sized window for the master bedroom.

This project had to be handled with great delicacy and care because of the importance of the religious build-ing to the people who use it.

The project shows a duality of facades. Firstly, there is a strong brick facade which shields the mosque from the sights and sounds of the city. The second facade is a thin metalic structure which gives a lightness and openess atmosphere.

6Autumn 2014 Ciutat Meridiana- Bcn

The project is situated in the northern valley of Ciu-tat Meridiana, underneath the aqueduct that serves as both the focal point of the project and the community. Located between Ciutat Meridiana and Can Cuiàs, the site provides easy access for the people of both neigh-bourhoods. In addition this is an area of great natural beauty, which borders Parc de Collserola. One useful characteristic of this site is that due to it being a natural drainage basin, rainwater can be harvested at certain times of the year. Furthermore, the land is currently inaccessible and neglected, and this project aims to realise its full potential.

NATURAL SWIMMING POOLS6year: place:

Page 18: Portfolio 2014 maria gimenez grau

The swimming pools are both located in flat areas of the site, and they incorporate organic shapes in order to minimise their visual impact. The swimming pools take advantage of the rainwater collected in tanks in order to be self-sufficient, and are organically filtered by plants.

Page 19: Portfolio 2014 maria gimenez grau

Currently Ciutat Meridiana lacks proper recreational sites for children and the com-munity, so this proposal includes a visitor centre that provides a wide variety of activities such as a zip-line, a playground and climbing walls.

Imperative to the project was the need to preserve the valley in its original state. Walls are very important in this project as they guide you through all the site, and at the same time they function as containing walls. All the materials used in this project are natural and have been selected because of their minimal environmental impact such as gabions walls and wooden platforms.

7Spring 2012Ivry-Sur-Mer_ Paris

This project is located in the suburbs of Paris, with the site being orientated with the train rails to the left (west) and the River Seine to the right (east). The site was previously an industrial area, so our projects function was to connect the two existing parks and re-generate and reinvigorate the urban landscape. Central to the project is the theoretical ambition to break the conventional orthogonal grid with a pedestrian path. Along this walkway public facilities and commerce are accommodated.

We took inspiration from an ecologically-friendly residen-tial complex in Hannover for this proposal. Additionally we endeavoured to give an ecological feel and balance to the neighbourhood. For instance we have utilized reclaimed and recycled materials in the construction, designed some reservoir-lakes that will collect rainwater for reuse, and the houses are provided with solar panels.

8Spring 2013 Rotterdam- Holland

Rotterdam is undoubtedly one of the most important ports in the world, due to it being the largest port in Europe. This project is situated in an obsolete dock and we have to redevelop it by planning houses, green spaces, squares, offices and a commercial road.

The house designs are diverse - we conceive of both modest single family house and high density residential buildings. It was also critical to integrate a system of drainage canals that ensure that any surface water flows away from the houses and into the sea.

URBAN HOUSING PLANyear: place:

Page 23: Portfolio 2014 maria gimenez grau

There is a main street, perpendicular to the docks which provide the inhabitants with local amenities, and larger commercial and public facilities. Facing the indus-trial area we have allocated space for a maritime investigation centre and student accommodation.

Spring 2014Baix Llobregat

The aim of this project was to improve the vertical con-nection between Esplugues de Llobregat with Bellvitge. After realising that there was a big horizontal dis-continuity because the train infrastructure, we opted to sew vertically the urban grid with three staples.

The project consists of a building in each staple that connects the two areas via the slope, this buildings offers new facilities that are essential for the sur-roundings.

10Autumn 2012 Centre of Avila

The objective of this creative workshop was to design the facade of a new public library in the centre of Avi-la, a city with rich historical background, exemplified by the well preserved medieval city walls.

It was important that the design of the library was harmonious with its historic surroundings. The smooth, white façade are engineered to transmit a neutral environment, that doesn’t conflict with the aesthetic of the city. I designed a unic window which I repeat without following a grid, so it becomes a pleasing facade.

For a History of Architecture course we were instructed to analyse one of Alvar Aalto’s designs and then repro-duce it in a model. The enquiry into the design’s back-ground study was very important, establishing Aalto’s thought process and intentions behind his selection of the forms and materials seen in the design. This ena-bled me to make reasonable and coherent decisions about the selection of my own materials for the project.

We used wood for the bricks, white paper for the con-crete, brown cardboard for the copper, and cork for the gardens.
