President’s Message:
Good day to Everyone!
The board has been very busy putting together the 2021 National Specialty at Purina Farms. We hope to see all of you there. For those that cannot make it we hope for next year in the same location.
Many thanks to Shannon Oliver for taking over the task of Media Chair. That frees up some of my time to concentrate on other club business.
The application and updated bylaws have been sent to AKC for review. I have been advised that it will be reviewed at the next AKC Board of Directors meeting “for publication” on September 16th to be published in October. Fingers crossed. We could have a delegate representative by next Spring!
Reminder that you are welcome to submit an application to hold a designated specialty at an all-breed club in your area. Contact any one on the board if you have any questions and that you for supporting and promoting our wonderful little breed.
Please stay informed by reading the board minutes each month. It is the best way to find out what is happening with the club. Thank you for your time and as always, we appreciate your input.

The PPPA Board is requesting your assistance with several volunteer committee positions. It is important to note that experience is NOT necessary. We would be happy to mentor you!
The list of committees are as follows:
• Judges Education: Mentors and Presenters Needed… please see guidelines outlined in the standing rules posted on the members only page of the website. Reports to committee chairs: Jean Evanoff.
• Top Twenty: Chairperson. Responsible for the following: Get annual breed statistics from AKC to determine the eligible dogs to be invited to the Top Twenty. Edit and mail annual top twenty invitations to club members. Find and contract the 3 judges required for the event. (see guidelines on the members only page of the website) Committee chair reports to the board any recommended changes to the Top Twenty. Coordinates raffle items for the Top Twenty event to offset costs associated with the event. Keeps a detailed budget and communicates directly with the treasurer. Interim committee chair: Susan Souza. Other members of the committee include: Stacy Faw, Shawn Brown and Jenna Orvos.

Introduction to Fast Cat
Fast Cat is relatively a new AKC performance sport. Fast Cat stands for Coursing Ability Test. This is a timed 100-yard dash where your dog is released at one end of the track and chases a lure on a pulley to the opposite end. Each dog runs separately. There is a handler who releases the dog at the starting line and a catcher who catches the dog at the finish line. It’s truly a family sport. If you come alone, no worries, there are lots of helpers at every event and we are friendly. Our dogs do not compete against each other, all dogs are welcomed with equal enthusiasm. Fast Cat is one of the few events that all you need to compete is a dog interested in the chase. This is why our Portuguese Podengo Pequenos learn easily and excel at the sport. In order to compete in Fast Cat your dog must be at least 12 months of age and have an AKC number via one of the following: Registration, Canine Partners, Purebred Alternative Listing or Foundation Stock Service (FSS). Spayed and neutered dogs are eligible. Females in season are not allowed to compete. Your dog’s time to complete the 100-yard dash is converted into points. As points are earned, fast cat titles are awarded. BCAT = 150 points. DCAT =500 points. FCAT = 1,000 points. The points add up fast! Let’s get started. Since our PPPs natural instinct is to chase, we just need to expose him to the mechanics. If you are starting out with a puppy, try pulling a cat toy on a pole along the ground in front of him. Keep the “lure” on the ground, not dangling over his head. Advance outdoors. Tie a white plastic bag to the end of a long lead line, a horse lunge whip, or fishing pole. Run dragging the plastic bag on the ground. Plastic white trash bags are used as the rabbit for most of these events. Get your dog use to the noise and the bag bouncing up and down and blowing around. Next expose your dog to the starting line flag. In many cases the dog will first get spooked when the flagger snaps that flag to indicate the start of the race. Buy a plastic flag on a stick. Put your dog on his leash and have someone snap and wave the flag next to you. Expose your dog to a sound of a generator or motor running. The generator is used to power the motor which pulls the lure cable. Go to a Fast Cat event held at dog shows or agility events. Have your dog watch the lure being pulled on the track from a distance. He will soon get excited as he hears the other dogs barking and sees the “rabbit”.
