Les partitifs
PARTITIVE ARTICLES
Partitive articles
are used both in English and in French to express
quantities that cannot be counted. While the
indefinite article (un, une, des) is used with countable
quantities (une pomme, deux pommes ...), the
partitive article is used before mass nouns, nouns that
are indivisible or uncountable. In English the article
'some' is often omitted.
There are 3 partitives articles in French
Du = masculine/singular = du pain = (some) bread
De la = feminine/singular = de la soupe = (some) soup
De l’ = in front of vowel = de l’eau = (some) water
** des would be used for plurals, but that is technically
an indefinite article.
After a negative
In negative sentences, du, de la, des, de l' change to de
Ex: je prends du lait
je ne prends pas de lait
