Children’s Book Award, coordinated by Jodi Vizzi and Roberta Mann The winner of the 2012‐2013 book award was announced on May 1.

Roberta Mann was recognized with a plaque at the May FRA Leadership Conference for her past few years of committed service to the Children’s Book Award Project.
Literacy Projects, coordinated by Margaret Adams
The International Projects committee sent books to Boswana and are currently asking for donations of more books, pencils and markers, school supplies, and suitcases to send in another shipment. Councils can bring donations to the conference.

Local Reading Councils enhance the IRA/FRA experience by providing:
Connection. Joining a diverse group of professionals who share a passion for literacy, instruction, and student achievement, can expand professional relations and transform formal and informal learning opportunities.
Leadership outside classroom walls. Teaching can be an isolation career, but volunteer‐led professional organizations develop and grow leadership skills that can be applied to a variety of areas.
Community building for a literate future. Councils engage whole communities in literacy awareness campaigns through recognition programs, community service, and special projects.

Current highlights from local councils: Bay County
Bay County Reading Association held a luncheon for the installation of the new executive board members on May 4, 2013. Planning is underway for a summer retreat to plot out the activities for the 2013‐2014 academic year. The 29th Annual Language Arts/Reading Classic will be held on January 25, 2014. The theme is Reading Southern Style!
President Kathleen Fontaine and President‐elect Jenne Palmer attended the 58th Annual International Reading Association Conference in San Antonio, TX to accept the IRA Honor Council Award. This is the 10th year BCRA has earned this coveted award. In addition, Kathleen and Jenne presented the Comprehensive Instructional Sequence (CIS) Model during the Special Interest Group session on Literacy at the conference.

Broward County
The Broward Reading Council had a reorganization meeting in April and is in the process of planning for the fall. The first big project will be to arrange for a bus to take members to the FRA conference in September.

The Membership Director has created an email distribution list for all members and sends meeting reminders and a colorful flyer for each meeting. They have partnered with the University of North Florida, a local university, to bring in speakers. The DCRC plans to target more community members this year (i.e., parents, business partners, organizations, etc.).

DCRC is supporting the Clay County Reading Council as they reinstate. Their newly elected board members have met with the DCRC board and will officially begin their roles in the 2013‐2014 academic year. DCRC board members will continue to support the Clay County Reading Council as they build their membership and plan events for the upcoming year.
Literacy Projects:
Little Red Bookshelf The Little Red Bookshelves will be placed in high traffic areas of town where children likely accompany their parents (grocery, hair salon, etc.); however, the Board has not determined the exact locations for placement. Members will donate children's books to be placed on the shelves with a message to families that the Little Red Bookshelf is a place for children to borrow, trade, and share rich children's literature.
Bags for Hubbard House DCRC collects gift bags at their December general meeting to take to Hubbard House for the children. Hubbard House is a shelter for abused women and their children. The Duval members look forward to providing gift bags with books, toiletries and other necessities for families who must leave their homes and go to this haven for moms and children. The bags are distributed to children in need throughout the year.
Dollars for Magazines Through this project, DCRC provides children’s magazine subscriptions, such as Ranger Rick, for two agencies; Hubbard House and Ronald McDonald House. Members donate “dollars” at one or two general meetings to fund this effort. o For more information please contact Robert Kelly at: [email protected]
Hillsborough County Hillsborough Reading Council recently participated in Strawberry Reads which coordinates with
Temple Terrace Reads. Students from all over the county were invited to the Plant City area to participate in reading events and activities in carnival style to entice students and families to participate.

Lee County LCRC’s end of the year banquet was held at Olive Garden in Fort Myers. Approximately 50
members attended the event. They celebrated the Lee County Reading Teachers of the year in elementary, middle, and high school. Jamie Ayers, a local teacher and LCRC member, was the keynote speaker. Jamie is spoke about her recent book: 18 Things.
An early membership drive for the next fiscal year was coordinated with the banquet and 22 people joined.
Tom Tufts will be presenting a 4‐hour workshop in August.
The council is currently exploring venues for their annual conference scheduled for Nov 2, 2013. Literacy Projects:

This continues to be one of the council’s strongest community service projects. Teachers that are involved in reading to the pediatric patients have coordinated other club projects with the council’s. One teacher got her book club involved and donated books totally $135.00. Another school hosted a Build‐A‐Bear community service project over the holidays and decided to give the bears to LCRC to deliver them in conjunction with the reading.
RAP ‐ Read Aloud Program LCRC continues to publicize this program in order to increase membership participation. Members are encouraged to read aloud to their students and color in a book on the RAP form for each 15 minutes they read. Once the form is completed, the form is sent to their RAP coordinator who in turn sends the member an age appropriate book for their classroom library. o For more information, please contact Shannon Barone at: [email protected]
Leon County On April 11, 2013, finalists and sponsoring teachers for the Young Authors Writing Contest were
recognized at the awards ceremony at the Leroy Collins Public Library in Tallahassee. The students read their award winning writing and were presented with gift certificates and Barnes and Nobel gift cards for those placing in each category, K‐12. Light refreshments were served.
On May 2, LCRC Spring Assembly, Election, and Membership awards were held at El Jalisco in Tallahassee from 5:30‐7:30.

Pasco County Pasco County Reading Council is excited to report that their final membership count was 235.
Presidents Lacey Kwasnicki and Torrey Primeau had set a membership goal of 200. They feel this is quite an accomplishment in a county where teachers have not had a raise in over five years.
Two speakers from the Tampa Bay Area Writing Project spoken at the final meeting for the 2012‐2013 academic year. Robin Irby spoke on Growing Writers: Writer’s Notebooks & Writing Across the Curriculum. Mari Uscatequ shared about the shifts in writing with Common Core State Standards. Karen Morris, a representative from Scholastic shared information about Scholastic’s Summer Reading Program. To conclude the evening, FRA District Director, Joy Milner, installed the officers for 2013‐2014.
