30 years ago BBC Scotland broadcast the first episode of a new Gaelic children’s TV show, Dòtaman. Little did anyone know the success the show and its iconic presenter, Donnie ‘Dòtaman’ MacLeod, would enjoy as it became one of the most famous Gaelic brands on TV!

Famed for its trademark hats, wonderful storytelling, colourful outfits, and catchy songs which Donnie made his own with his trusty guitar, over 400 episodes were made of the series over 16 years.

This nostalgic and warm hour long anniversary programme hears from Donnie and the team behind the show, as we explore what made it the success it was.

Cathy MacDonald offers another opportunity to enjoy some of the successful performers from the Children’s Mod held earlier this autumn in Oban. The premier Gaelic music and language festival got off to a great start not just with the weather but the impressive children’s competitions. Saturday was the first day of the Mod with youngsters to the fore in musical competitions. On Monday the singing competitions began with young learners taking part while the following day, the competitions were aimed at native speakers.

A selection of winners from all three days will be shown including the winners of the James C MacPhee medals and also the young girl and boy who won the Comunn Gàidhealach Silver Medals, Emily Robertson and Ruairidh Gray.

Christmas readings will be provided by members of the Soisgeul choir and the local community.

The concert will be interspersed with the story of Soisgeul charting the creation and first year of the first ever National Gaelic Gospel Choir led by Mary Ann Kennedy. The choir is formed and prepare to enter the BBC Gospel Choir of the Year competition and head to the Solas Festival in Perthshire to bring their unique blend of Gospel and the Gaelic music tradition to the public.

Cathy MacDonald offers another opportunity to enjoy some of the successful performers from the choral competitions at the Mod in Oban where the competitions were again keenly contested with a high standard of singing for each prize. This programme will show all the choirs who took part in the Lovat and Tullibardine and the Margrat Duncan competitions.

The rural choirs are also represented with a selection from each choir who took part in the Lorn Shield and the Sherriff MacMaster Campbell Memorial Quaich. Other winners are also featured including Back Choir, Melvich Gaelic Choir, Glasgow Islay Gaelic Choir and Lochs Gaelic Choir.

Tony Kearney is one of the best-known performers in Scotland Since boyhood, he has presented and acted in numerous TV and theatre productions, in Gaelic and in many other roles, most notably in BBC Scotland’s hit soap River City.

But less is perhaps known of the creative talents that extend through Tony’s family, through his maternal grandparents from the Isle of Barra. Here, we meet the ‘children of Peter Rory’ - Tony’s mother and her siblings, and learn of their upbringing in a home that revolved around the songs and music of the Hebridean tradition.

The programme includes compelling archive of the song and story collecting carried out by members of the family in Barra in the mid-20th century, and offers a colourful glimpse of their continued involvement with broadcasting, theatre and music.

In January 2005, three generations of the same family lost their lives on one tragic night as they tried to flee the hurricane that was battering the islands. Murdina and Archie MacPherson and their two children all perished, as did Murdina’s father, Calum Campbell.

Calum, who was 67, was well known as a piper and piping instructor and had also composed some tunes. The extent of his compositional work wasn’t apparent until his son Niall embarked on the difficult task of sorting through his father’s effects. He found pieces of paper with tunes and notes of the stories that had inspired them, and Niall realized that he had discovered something very special. As 2015 approached, the family wanted to find a way of creating a positive memory for the family and the community, and the idea of publishing a book of Calum’s tunes was first mooted. MacTV followed the family’s journey as they turned the idea into reality in Calum’s Music.

A team of puffer enthusiasts from Islay battle to save the VIC 27 - a 66 year old vessel - from the scrap heap. On her rusty bow she bears the name Vital Spark - a throwback to her glory days as star of the BBC’s 1994 series “The Tales of Para Handy”.

With no working engine, the team organise for the puffer to be taken under tow through the canal to Crinan where her restoration begins. They look on nervously as she’s carefully winched up the purpose built slipway. This is the first time in almost 30 years she’s been out of the water and at last the team can assess the condition of her hull.

The re-plating of the heavily corroded metal looks likely to be time consuming and costly.

Music documentary charting the life of one of Gaeldom’s great characters - Rona Lightfoot. The revered singer, piper, storyteller and teacher carries a treasure trove of folklore, music and song with her. Born in South Uist, Rona grew up in a family rich in tradition. There are countless young singers and pipers who have benefited from Rona’s skill as a tutor. She has taught at fèisean all over Scotland and has been an instructor at Ceòlas on South Uist every year since its inception in 1996. Her ready wit and storytelling skills make her a popular MC at musical events and he r great love for piping remains undiminished. Rona is busier than she has ever been, relishing the opportunity to judge at piping competitions and mentor young pipers. They’re 10 years old. They’re Scottish, Chinese and Nigerian. They can reduce a grown policeman to tears. They could be the new face of piping in Govan. With a sense of humour and buckets of charm, the film traces the first 18 months of the Govan Schools Pipe Band.

The band is the brainchild of local charities, on a mission to give pupils the opportunity to learn Scotland’s national instrument. Ex-coppers from the multi-award-winning Police Pipe Band come in as tutors to give Govan’s new multi-cultural generation a chance at the musical big time.

This new generation of pipers in Govan are following the footsteps of the Gaels who first brought piping to Glasgow. On their journey from picking up the pipes for the first time to playing at a national Pipe Band Competition, the children meet legendary piper Rona Lightfoot and bag-rockers the Red Hot Chilli Pipers.

Half a million profoundly deaf people across the world have had their hearing restored thanks to cochlear implantation. The extraordinary clips of their cochlear implant being ‘switched on’ have become a staple ‘fix’ on social media shared and watched by millions.

Over the past 25 years the Scottish Cochlear Implant Unit at Crosshouse Hospital, Kilmarnock have implanted 1400 people. But the staff here believe that represents only a fraction of the people who need it. This film follows five patients on an extraordinary emotional journey: From the sign maker whose job depends on the implant working, to the teenage girl who went from competitive singer to profoundly deaf over the summer holidays, to the grandfather who desperately wants to be able to hear his grandkids. The stakes are high: the implant may give them their hearing back, but it could equally take what’s left of it away.

Leading the club are Manager, Murdo MacDonald, his Assistant, Alex Matheson, and the Chairman, John ‘Corags’ MacLeod – all ex-players and die hard Westsiders! Their roles are wide and varied - from organising the fundraisers, to pitch repairs, and grass cutting, They’ll turn their hand to anything as do the team! Corags’ wife, Sandra, is also at the heart of all things Westside!

From washing strips, to making the pies, to cleaning the changing rooms - there’s always something. Then there’s the supporters, and the many regulars, amongst them the old boys, some great characters who have followed the team for many a year and have plenty of craic!

Programme one comes from the first day of the Scottish National competition at Conan Bridge. Competing in an idyllic but somewhat windy setting was the best of Scottish talent with the first at the post 2015 World Champion Michael Shearer and Roy. He chalks up a decent score, but will it be enough for him to top the leader board?

As well as the action on the field our FCC team take a look at what some handlers do in their spare time… sing! We speak to the Farmers Wives Choir & Farmers Choir who perform at the Royal Highland Show. Still on a high note, we speak to handler and The Voice of Ireland singing competition finalist Kieran McKillop about his time on the popular entertainment show performing in front of a large audience.

Bannan returns and there’s lots going on in Camus! Alasdair comes back home to Màiri and Anna and they begin to get to know their ‘new’ mother in law and granny, Iseabail. Cailean suspects that there is more going on than meets the eye and wants to know more about this new woman. He is pleasantly distracted with the arrival of his wife Sarah Jane, back from the city with her niece Isla. Màiri is delighted to see her teenage friend Sarah Jane again but wants to know why their friendship came to such a sudden end. Sarah Jane reluctantly reveals why to a stunned Mairi. Donneil is confounded by Nebhada who seems to be in Camus to stay and by the arrival of another unwelcome visitor. Donna celebrates her birthday with a lavish party and leaves Finlay lost for words as she announces her wonderful birthday present to all the guests.

Built in the 1750s by the 5th Earl of Dumfries, and with a unique collection of Chippendale Furniture, the House has been described as an 18th century time capsule having remained unchanged for over 250 years.

In the second series of Leugh Mi, Anna MacLeod will be in conversation with two guests each week about their favourite books and also finding out more about their lives. This week Angela MacEachen talks about how a book about a charity has impacted on her life. She also discusses the book that she first read whilst a student in secondary school. Bill Innes talks about his lasting love of books since childhood and especially historical books and his passion for researching this topic. As well as discussing their favourite books, each guest will have chosen a book for the other to read and we’ll find out in the programme whether they enjoyed it - or not!
