II. BACKGROUNDIn Indonesia, all kinds of infrastructure have been built such as, roads, buildings and bridges. But there is an infrastructure that is rarely built in Indonesia. The tunnel is a bit of infrastructure that its existence. Usually the tunnel construction is known in the field of mining, not the civilian field. The use of tunnels as the infrastructure is limited to power generation only. For other purposes is still rare. So that the technology used was certainly still very strange among foreign civil engineer in Indonesia.

In general, in making the tunnel, drilling and blasting is the conventional method which consists of several stages of the drilling (drill) and blasting (blow up) as the two main stages. But with the development of technology, there is another method of making a tunnel with the Tunnel boring machine (TBM) method. TBM is a tunnel digger. Because the machine that resembles a cylinder shape, surface tunnels are formed like a circle. TBM can be used in soft rock to hard rock. This tool diameter varies from 3 feet to 19 feet. TBM is equipped with a drill bit that spread over the surface of the drill head. Cylinder shaped drill head is then spun and eroded rocks. And so on with TBM moves forward. Tunnel excavated by TBM will instantly have a flat surface until no longer needed finishing work. Because TBM tunneling is much more efficient andjust need a shorter time.

Because in Indonesia is still low in the tunnel infrastructure, thus making the method of TBM tunnel was only found in some projects. Engineers who have experience in using the TBM was very little, therefore it is necessary for the civil engineer knowing the ins and outs of this TBM method. In order for the construction of the tunnel in Indonesia is more efficient and certainly the construction of the tunnel can be used as the main infrastructure other than highways. For us, knowing the importance of technology in making the tunnel at manufacturing technology circuitry and other civil infrastructure. Because the future is not impossible the existence of tunnel is needed.

Construction of the tunnel itself can be used as water distribution and transportation facilities. As is known in the strait is a channel which separates the English and French. However, a separate state can be put together with the making of the tunnel that can be passed by car or train. So that under certain conditions the tunnel into an effective transportation solution. Than as a means of human transportation, tunnels can also be used to transport water. Water transport in the form of dirty water and raw water for the community. Certainly originated from the water source and ends at home home residents. Tunneling water transport can also be used also for flood controlling .One of the of water transportation is located in Malaysia Pahang-Selangor Raw Water Transfer project. Where the project is using TBM technology when building the tunnel.Malaysia has experienced high economic growth from 1980s onward which has resulted high demands for water for commercial and industrial development centres. The Selangor/Kula Lumpur region is the most important focus of higher water demand. The water demand in this region is espected to grow at a high rate. The objectives is to construct a tunnel to convey raw water from Pahang state to ensure that there is sufficient water avalaible from Selangor state, Kuala Lumpur and Negeri Sembilan state. One of the contractors involved in this project is the Shimizu Corporation. Shimizu Corp. is a leading architectural, engineering and general contracting firm, offering an integrated, comprehensive planning, design and build solutions for a broad range of construction and engineering projects worldwide. It has annual sales of approximately U.S. $ 14 billion and has been Widely Recognized as one of the top 5 contractors in Japan and Among the top 20 in the world. Construction technologies and methods have advanced rapidly. Still, the approach of striving to Ensure growth based on quality products satisfy customers. That Remains the unchanging foundation for all activities Shimizu. Each structure Shimizu builds incorporates ideas that are drawn from a wide range of parties while centering on the needs of shimizu customers. By applying such passion to each and every project, Shimizu is ensuring that generations to come can be proud of the work they do today.

To produce graduates who are competent and ready to compete in the world of work in this globalization era, the Department of Civil Engineering Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia requires students who are ahead of the final level required to perform duties with a field called Internship program, which is the second course credits. Activities are carried out practical work in companies engaged in the field of civil engineering and environmental science, because it consists replaced with Minister of the department of civil and environmental engineering. Where the two departments should be involved in this internship. The field work is to study the methods of civil engineering construction. Through this program students are expected to apply and develop science and theories that have been acquired in college to the real process in the field. In addition, it is expected that the occurrence of a process of sharing information, so that students gain the knowledge applied in the workplace that could be useful for the community.

Based on the reasons why we propose this internship proposal with great hope that we can learn and gain knowledge from people who have expertise and experience in the manufacturing method of TBM tunnel, especially with the addition, we as students are also very much hope to be able to observe the process in the field directly. Therefore, Shimizu Corporation is engaged in the construction, and has experience building of variaty mega projects in the world is the right choice for us.

III. PURPOSEShimizu Corporation is one of the international company that originated in Japan, is engaged in construction. With the many advantages of technology and operations management professionals, we are interested in doing practical work in the Shimizu corporation, especially in the Pahang-Selangor Raw Water Transfer Project. Therefore, the proposal we submitted this practical work with some of the following objectives:

1. Meet one of the subjects Internship' required for the Department of Civil Engineering-University of Indonesia students to obtain undergraduate degree (Bachelor Degree).2. Recognize and broaden our knowledge in the field of technology, especially in the field of Tunnel Construction with Tunnel Boaring Machine Method.3. Observe directly the use of the basic theories that have been given during the lecture.4. This report has been supported by a leading Indonesian magazine Tempo, which carried out a survey and analysis to rank universities and education in Indonesia. Profile of Civil Engineering DepartmentIntroduction In 1964, the University of Indonesia as a state university, opened civil engineering study program as part of the Faculty of Engineering University of Indonesia. Its establishment was referred to a decree from the Ministry of Higher Education and Science number 76/1964, dated 17 July 1964. In its early development, there were only four departments in the Faculty of Engineering, whereas Civil Engineering was one of them. ProgramCurrently, the Department of Civil Engineering is managing Bachelor Degree Programs with five concentrations; Structural engineering, Water Resources engineering, Transportation engineering, Construction Management, and Geotechnical Engineering. In 2006, the Department offers two study programs, Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering. The Program is designed for four-years (eight semesters) providing a comprehensive foundation within the area of civil engineering. The courses are distributed into 18-20 credits or 5 to 6 subjects in each semester. Each subject bears 3 5 credits. In total, there are 144 credits to finish the studies and awarded Bachelor of Civil Engineering. The subjects are grouped into basic knowledge (30%), civil engineering subjects (47%), specialization & elective subjects (17%) distributed systematically each semester. According to human resource and educational infrastructure capabilities, Master Degree Program and Doctoral Degree Program were opened in 1994 and 2000 respectively.Practical aspects of civil engineering and the ability to work in a team, attitudes, ethics, professional values, communication skills and computer skills are emphasized through laboratory works, and design projects. Implementation of student centre teaching methods leads students to succeed in the studies and become life-long learners. One introductory subject is designed to allow students to interact with their society at the earlier stage. A comprehensive training model of teaching and learning process is strategic approach in development process, considering also complementary subjects such as communication skills, management and economic. Curriculum is evaluated and reviewed every 4 years. This is to maintain continuous feedback in the form of assessments and evaluations in order to achieve the expected output quality of the curriculum. The changes are: increasing credits per courses while reducing number of courses per semester, and offering integrated basic courses at the University and Faculty level. More details about the changes are shown in Appendix 2.2. The significant change occurred in 1996, covered some principles educational system in which change from civil engineering specialize to general civil engineering, which reducing number of credits from 160 to 144 credits and simultaneously reducing period of study from 5 to 4 years. Policy & Strategy

Subjects are arranged according to the logical series of the content, in order to gradually achieve competence level. Prerequisite is determined for core subjects that support core competence. In the first two semesters, knowledge and subject given concentrates on the understanding of basic sciences and introduction towards the civil engineering profession which is translated into one exclusive subject. Integrated Basic University subject for all university students has been introduced to improve students soft skills such as communication skills. Policy to shorten study periods and increase number of graduates, at the last two semester students may choose their interest specific concentration.

In order to improve human resources with higher quality, the study program offers integration between undergraduate and postgraduate educational system. This approach is expected to increase the interest of undergraduates to pursue to master degree. When fully implemented, it allows qualified undergraduate students to take postgraduate course(s) in their final year and complete two different degrees in shorter time. The system has been developed as state-of-the-art learning-teaching process in civil engineering education by optimizing the strength of the Department in teaching, research and community services.

Student EntranceNew student enrollment is centralized managed by the University with two schemes, those are: Equity Scheme (PPKB, KSDI) and National Entrance Test for state University (SNMPTN and Joint Entrance Test- UMB). The University of Indonesia allocate 10% of student candidates to be accepted from equity scheme and 90% from National Test. The selection process through SNMPTN is done simultaneously for all state university in Indonesia and is carried out by the Directorate General of Higher Education the Department of National Education and UMB is jointly carried out by 9 state universities.

AccreditationThe department has received the highest rank of accreditation (level A) from the National Accreditation Board Government of Indonesia at 2004. In 2001, Civil Engineering Department awarded International accreditation from the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) ICE (International Civil Engineers) of the United Kingdom. Due to the international policy changes of JBM where Indonesia was not included in their strategic area, the renewal process of accreditation cannot be done. However, all undergraduate students are eligible to become member of ICE students for free and graduates are eligible to become ICE Member. This is a plus factor for civil engineering graduates to be able to compete on an international level.
