Terminology

ALTERNATIVE PATHWAY/ENTRYA way of gaining admission to a university degree, other than by ATAR.

ASSUMED KNOWLEDGEA basic level of specific knowledge required before beginning a particular degree course. For example, assumed knowledge for a B Science may be HSC Chemistry. The course will be taught assuming the student has acquired the specific knowledge.

ASSOCIATE DEGREEA qualification requiring two years of full-time study, or part-time equivalent. You could count this towards a full Bachelor’s Degree.

AUSTRALIAN TERTIARY ADMISSION RANK (ATAR)Formerly the UAI, the ATAR is a rank between 0 and 99.95 based on a student’s HSC performance against all other HSC students in NSW.

BACHELOR DEGREEA first-level university or undergraduate course requiring three to six years of full-time study, or the part-time equivalent. Bachelor is often abbreviated to B – e.g. B Science.

BONUS POINTSTypically there are two types of bonus points,

Regional bonus points and subject bonus points. Each institution sets its own criteria for allocating these.

FLEXIBLE LEARNINGFlexible learning combines times and modes of learning, integrating the best aspects of face-to-face, community based and online interactions for each discipline.

HECS-HELPA government loan scheme that allows Commonwealth Supported students to defer the payment of their contribution amount.

LECTURES, TUTORIALS AND PRACTICALSStudents are required to attend a combination of classes, delivered in different ways, for every subject they’re studying in their degree. Lectures are large information sessions attended by everyone enrolled in the subject, usually 1-2 hours in duration. Students are then divided into smaller tutorials (15-30 students) for more interactive, in-depth exploration of subject matter. Some subjects may also require practical classes which are small, hands-on classes in specialised facilities such as anatomy labs, computer rooms and industrial kitchens. Most full-time degrees require between 12 and 20 hours of face-to-face class time per week.

Support – Preparing you for a Whole New World

SPECIAL ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT UNITS

The College offers the following additional support services to students to help bridge the gap between high school and the level of knowledge and skills needed for university:

→ Academic English: This unit is offered in all University Foundation Studies and Diploma programs and is strongly focused on improving academic reading, writing and listening skills.

→ Tertiary Study Skills: Offered in all Diploma programs, this unit addresses the specific skills you will need as a tertiary student across all disciplines, such as how to research, reference, cite sources and write an essay.

→ Discipline-specific: In the Standard and Extended Diploma Programs, you will study extra discipline-specific “gap” subjects such as Chemistry and Maths in the Science Diploma, Physics and Maths in the Engineering Diploma, and Statistics and Accounting in the Business and Commerce Diploma.

EARLY ASSESSMENT AND TAILORED PROGRAMS

The College assesses your academic strengths and weaknesses early in your course and provides you with an individual report that makes recommendations about areas for improvement and any need for support classes.

The College puts in place many resources to help you progress successfully in your studies. Additional support classes in Maths and English focus on individual problems experienced by students in these areas.

UNIVERSITY-LEVEL SKILLS AND ASSESSMENTS

You will learn a range of tertiary skills needed to pass your units. A number of assessment tasks are set during the term and may include essays, research papers, oral presentations, fieldwork and laboratory practicals. Final Diploma exam papers are quality assured by Western Sydney University to ensure they meet the University standards.

FRIENDLY, AVAILABLE STAFF

Our First Year Experience Coordinators monitor each student’s progress and are the first point of contact if you have concerns. Our dedicated teachers are generous with their time and available for consultation and by email if needed.

As a student at The College, you will find all the help and support you need is close at hand. The experienced, professional team at the Student Services Centre are committed to making you feel at home in your new life at The College. The experienced and professional team at the Student Services Centre are committed to assisting your transition to university.

The Student Services Centre is your first point of contact for information, and advice and referrals to other services. They can also help with issues including enrolment and fees, applying for a Student ID card, lodgement of forms and other non-academic issues.

STUDENT ADVISERS

The Student Adviser’s role is to provide support and direction on welfare and health matters, and more complex issues. If you have a disability or health condition that requires specialised assistance or affects your ability to study, the Advisers can contact the University Disability Services to help you. If you require professional counselling about personal, relationship, career or family matters the Advisers can refer you to the University Counselling Service.

Advisers can also provide advice and information or refer you to someone on the team who can help you with illness or injury and accommodation options.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES

The Student Activities Officers organise regular student social and cultural events that help you get to know other students and broaden your appreciation of the diversity of cultures at The College.

We celebrate many festivals and important holidays from the diverse cultures of our student community. Sporting and social activities include basketball, soccer, volleyball, Nintendo Wii, table tennis and pool competitions. Recreational, fun classes in painting, jewellery-making and tai chi are offered by qualified staff, as well as seminars on study skills, resume writing and interview skills to help with job seeking.

Excursions throughout the year include day trips to the Blue Mountains, harbour cruises and shopping tours.

Quality Teaching

HIGHLY SKILLED TEACHERS

The College’s commitment to delivering high-quality courses begins with the quality of our teaching staff. Our teaching staff comes from a variety of backgrounds and academic disciplines. Many of them teach both at the University and The College in their specific area of expertise.

They are all accustomed to working in a multicultural environment and are united in their commitment to providing students with an educational environment that ensures academic success. We offer a rich suite of resources and learning methodologies to match the individual and cultural needs of our students.

COURSE CONTENT

Students will learn through a range of methods including lectures, tutorials and practical sessions in computer and science laboratories. The amount of time spent in full-time study varies between courses. On average, students take four units per term over the duration of a course, although the number of units can vary from term to term and from course to course. The average number of face-to-face teaching hours is 20 per week, with a maximum load of 24 hours per week.

Students must spend an equivalent amount of time studying outside formal class times. Full-time students should plan to spend about 35–40 hours a week on their studies.

ASSESSMENT METHODS

Each unit is assessed through a combination of continual assessment and/or midterm and final examinations. Details for each unit are contained in the individual unit outlines.

ACADEMIC COURSE TERMS

The College academic year is made up of three terms:

→ February to June → June to October, and → October to February of the following year.

The College term consists of 12 teaching weeks and a one week examination period. There is a one week break mid-term and a three week break between each term. Re-enrolments commence in the second week of the three week break.

All students are required to attend orientation.

Note: Associate Degree academic year is made up of four quarters:

→ January → March → June → September

CLASS SIZES

An academic lecture at The College will have from 20 to 95 students, and a tutorial or a computer laboratory session will have up to 22 students.

The College provides an alternative pathway to Western Sydney University for students who may not have qualified for direct entry or seek a supportive study environment. ASSOCIATE DEGREE

The Associate Degree in Engineering offers prospective students: upgraded knowledge and skills for career progression to managerial roles, the graduate attributes of an Engineering Associate required by Engineers Australia, and a clear pathway to the Western Sydney University Bachelor of Engineering degree with a minimum of 1.5 years credit (depending on elective choices).

UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION STUDIES

There are two programs, Accelerated - 1 term (4 months) in duration and Standard - 2 terms (8 months) in duration. Entry into either program will be determined based on the level of schooling completed and your academic grades.

DIPLOMAS

The Diploma Program is available in three formats: a Fast Track (two terms) format studied over eight months or a Standard (three terms) format studied over 12 months or an Extended (four terms) format studied over 16 months. The Fast Track format offers you a fantastic opportunity to fast track your studies. All three formats enable you to gain two valuable qualifications – a Diploma and a Degree.

In both our University Foundation Studies and Diploma programs students will benefit from a technology-enriched learning approach. STANDARD (12 MONTHS)

→ Same content as fast track but spaced out over 12 months. As the Diploma is set over 12 months, it allows students an opportunity to improve their entry qualification while preparing for university study.

→ Same subjects and content as first year Western Sydney University students will study.

→ Guaranteed entry* into the second year of the corresponding Western Sydney University Bachelor’s degree. Based on successful completion of the Diploma.

Information and Communications Technology

The Engineering and Construction Management course is widely recognised for delivering the full suite of theoretical and practical units, and hands- on experience in the area of construction management.

This course is aimed at providing you with the skills and abilities necessary to perform competently at a professional level in the building industry in one or more of the following roles: construction manager, project manager, building supervisor, estimator, quantity surveyor and building researcher.

Entry Articulation UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION STUDIES TO BACHELOR’S DEGREE ARTICULATION REQUIREMENTSAt the completion of each term of the University Foundation Studies Program, students will receive a number called a Grade Point Average (GPA). The highest GPA attainable is 10. These GPA’s will largely determine a student’s academic progression to the next term or course. The minimum articulation requirements for Western Sydney University courses are listed below.

Courses which have a high demand or limited places available will usually have a higher GPA requirement.

APPLYING FOR A UNIVERSITY FOUNDATION STUDIES COURSE:You are able to apply for a University Foundation Studies Course directly through the Apply Online system – applyonline.westernsydney.edu.au

Before logging in, you will need to create an account. Once you have logged in and begun the application process, you may exit at any stage and your details will be saved.

APPLYING FOR A DIPLOMA PROGRAM:You are able to apply online through the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC). The average application takes 30 minutes. You will have a choice of nine (9) preferences in your UAC application where you must list The College as a preference in order to be considered for an offer.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IS FEE-HELP?FEE-HELP is an initiative of the Australian Government that allows eligible students not receiving government support to study now and pay later for their tertiary education. FEE-HELP is a loan from the Australian Government to help pay all or part of their tuition fees.

University Foundation Studies are covered by FEE-HELP which is available for eligible full-fee paying students to assist in paying their tuition fees.

The Australian Government pays the loan amount directly to The College on your behalf and your FEE-HELP debt is recorded with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO). Students will repay their loan through the tax system once their income is above the minimum threshold. For further information, please visit studyassist.gov.au

Only Australian citizens or holders of an Australian Permanent Humanitarian Visa are eligible. If students are eligible and wish to apply for FEE-HELP, they should contact The College Student Services Centre to obtain a Request for FEE-HELP assistance form and information pack.

WHAT IS HECS-HELP?HECS-HELP is a loan program to help eligible Commonwealth supported students to pay their student contribution amounts. Before 2005, this was known as ‘HECS’.

HECS-HELP is not just a loan scheme. Under HECS-HELP, eligible students can also receive a 5% discount on the amount of their payment when they pay $500 or more of their student contributions (for a study period) up-front.

The College Diploma courses are covered by a HECS-HELP loan and are available to eligible students enrolled in

WHEN DO I HAVE TO APPLY TO UAC?To be included in particular offer rounds, you must apply by certain dates. Visit uac.edu.au for important dates. You can submit only one application to UAC. After you have applied, you can change your mind about your course preferences by using ‘Check & Change’ on the UAC website. You can choose up to nine courses on your UAC application.

WHAT BONUS POINTS CAN I GET?There are bonus points available through Western Sydney Triple Advantage. You may qualify for Regional Bonus Points and/or Subject Bonus Points. Applicants who qualify can only receive a maximum of 10 bonus points in total. Bonus points apply to all The College courses, excluding University Foundation Studies. WHAT IF I AM APPLYING WITHOUT AN ATAR?If you’re thinking that you won’t qualify because you don’t have the right qualifications, bring us your story and we can start the process of assessing your knowledge and work experience.

WHO IS A MATURE-AGE STUDENT?It is not about being over 21. You can be 17, 18, 19, 20 and over 21. A mature-age student is also known as a non-current school leaver; at The College the application process for a non-current school leaver simply means not sitting the Higher School Certificate (HSC) or International Baccalaureate (IB) at the time of applying for study. Minimum 6 months out of school.

WHAT SUPPORT SERVICES ARE AVAILABLE?The College knows that, for many students, moving from high school to university is a big deal. That’s why we work hard to give our students the right support through a range of support services.

When students study at The College they will be well-supported by our experienced, professional Student Services team. Their job is to help you feel at home on campus. They organise fun student social and cultural events that help you get to know other students who may be studying different courses or who represent different cultures.

The College Student Services Centre is committed to broadening your appreciation of the diversity of cultures at The College, as well as enjoying the sights and sounds of Sydney. Regular events and activities are available for you to participate in and enjoy.

The Student Services Centre can provide you with information, counselling, advocacy and referral services if needed. Issues that you may want to discuss are:

→ career decisions → courses and vocations → accommodation → personal, relationship and family matters → employment → adjusting to life in Australia → illness or disability, and → student visas.

You will find that all the help and support you need is never far away. You are encouraged to make an appointment with Student Services staff concerning any of the issues mentioned above.

Appointment bookings can be made at The College Student Services Centre. Consultations are confidential, but are subject to legal limitations.

HOW ARE FEES CALCULATED?Fees depend on the band of your course and the course’s study load. Not all units in a given course fall within the same contribution band.
