Psalm 2 - A Royal Psalm
A celebration at the coronation of the King in spite of the opposition by the
rebellious peoples around them.
Psalm 2:1-2
1 Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing?
2 The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together,
Against the LORD and against His Anointed, saying,
Psalm 2:3
3 “Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from
us.”
Psalm 2:1-3 - The Rebellion
The King is amazed that the nations would seek to devise a plot destined
to fail.Every King anointed by a prophet was
a "messiah" or "anointed one".

If that King obeyed God, God would support his rule.
The plans of those opposed were spoiled by God's intervention.
Psalm 2:4-5
4 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The Lord shall hold them in derision.
5 Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, And distress them in His deep
displeasure:

6 “Yet I have set My King On My holy hill of Zion.”
Psalm 2:4 - The Response of God
God is pictured in heaven high above the kings laughing at their plans
against Him.

God's contempt for their plans seen in His response of "wrath".
God instead plans to install His King to put an end to the rebellion.

"Zion" mentions 40 xs in Psalms.
Zion = the temple area, later the entire city of Jerusalem.
"holy hill" = the temple mount.

7 “I will declare the decree: The LORD has said to Me,
‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.

When David became king, described as a "father-son" relationship.
"son" = messianic overtones

Psalm 2:8-9
8 Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your
possession. 9 You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a
potter’s vessel.’”
Psalm 2:8 - The declaration
The adopted son inherits the Kingdom from his "Father".
An invitation to ask for the Kingdom which someday will encompass the
ends of the earth.

All rebellion will be crushed.
Egyptian kings used to smash jars of pottery symbolic of rebellious cities
or nations.
Psalm 2:10-11 - The exhortation
10 Now therefore, be wise, O kings; Be instructed, you judges of the earth.
11 Serve the LORD with fear, And rejoice with trembling.
Psalm 2:12 - The exhortation
12 Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, And you perish in the way,
When His wrath is kindled but a little.
Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.

The nations are encouraged to submit before the wrath begins.
God often referred to as the King in the Psalms.

"serve", "rejoice", "fear", and "trembling" = describe the righteous
in worship.
Humility and exaltation, not arrogance and gloom.
Psalm 2:12 - The exhortation
Submit to His rule before you are destroyed.

Only in the son is there safety from God's wrath.

The Psalm directly involved David and God's covenant to him.

Israel is the focal point of God's program for the world.

Jesus Christ will rule!
As the Son of David, He will forever rule His kingdom.

as I also have received from My Father;
As we move toward the end of humanities' rebellion, we move closer to God's rule, to
the Kingdom of God.
All believers will be there.
David's Son will rule.
Christ will bring in the Kingdom.
The question is...
What do you want your eternity to look like?

With all the doubts of today, with all of the pain, with the pull of this world, with the pull
of your flesh, with the pull of Satan...
Do you trust Him?
Will you live by faith?
