A Message from GrahamWith households feeling the weight of cost-of-living

pressures and Brisbane still recovering from the impact of Januarys fl oods, Im mindful of the need for a responsible, back to basics approach to Councils fi nances.

Thats why my 2011/12 budget is focused on improving core Council services while delivering one of the lowest rate rises in the past 35 years.

We re on track to deliver key promises we made in 2008 - planting two million trees, purchasing 500 hectares of bushland for conservation, putting 500 new buses on Brisbane roads and completing a $100 million upgrade to our bikeway infrastructure.

At the same time we are proceeding with our important traffi c congestion busting project, Legacy Way, with a welcome contribution from the Federal Government. Additional funds will be invested in core Council services, with record spending on road resurfacing and footpaths.

Im committed to making Brisbane a cleaner, greener and more inclusive city. This Budget - concentrating on the fundamentals of rates, roads and rubbish - does exactly this.

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk will spend over $5 million in 2011/12 improving disability services as part of his vision to make Brisbane a more accessible and inclusive city.

Cr Quirk said $3 million had been allocated to begin following the recommendations in his recently released fi ve-year Access and Inclusion Plan for Brisbane.

The plan has 11 new initiatives and 61 extensions to existing programs. These include things like recharge stations for electric scooters and wheelchairs and enabling people with hearing and other communication diffi culties to contact Council via web chat and SMS.

Delivering on green commitmentsBrisbane City Council will have renewable green energy

for all its facilities for at least 15 years under a tender expected to be awarded in the new fi nancial year.

The announcement in the Lord Mayors 2011-12 Budget heads a range of green initiatives to help make Brisbane Australias greenest city.

Cr Quirk said he was on track to deliver on his Can Do teams green commitments of planting two million trees and purchasing 500 hectares of bushland by March 2012.

Bus, ferry and bikeway funds ensure promises delivered

$210 million will be spent to complete key public and active transport election commitments in this years budget as part of Lord Mayor Graham Quirks plan to tackle traffi c congestion.

Cr Quirk will spend a total of $465 million on public transport in 2011/12, including $193 million on bus and ferry infrastructure. About $56 million of this will be used to fi nalise the Can Do team s commitment to put 500 new buses on the road this term.

More money for local roadsLord Mayor Graham Quirk will spend over $1 billion

dollars in 2011/12 fi xing suburban roads and building key bypass road infrastructure as part of his plan to reduce traffi c congestion in Brisbane.

Cr Quirk said this would involve spending about $553 million upgrading suburban roads, including about $56 million to continue the delivery of the Can Do teams unprecedented Road Action Program (RAP).
