Abstracti The purpose of this descriptive research was to explore needs, responses to
needs, stress, and coping of patients' relatives before transferring from Intensive Care
Units (ICU). The stress and coping model of Lazarus and Folkman was used as the
conceptual framework of this study. The purposive sample consisted of 105 relativesof patients. Instruments used for data collection were: The Demographic Data Form,The Needs and Responses to Needs of Patients' Relatives Questionnaire, a semi-structured interviewing form, The Perceived Stress Questionnaire, and the JalowiecCoping Scale (JCS). The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statisricsand paired t-test, and qualitative data were anaLyzed using content analysis. The resultsrevealed that the mean score of needs was found to be significantly higher than themean score of responses to needs. The most common need was information, the second(twas release of anxiety," and the least common needs were *psychological supportand expression of feelings." The most response to needs was release of anxiety and theleast was personal needs. The mean score for the relative's stress was at a low level:however, the score was consistent with the qualitative data conceming the relatives'feelings before transferring patients from the intensive care unit. The result showedthat the most common feeling of patients' relatives was happiness, and the second was
stress. All relatives of patients combined two coping strategies which were problem-focused coping and emotional-focused coping. Based on these findings, nurses shoulddevelop a care plan to meet relatives' needs by giving them adequate and appropriatet'informationtt, and use guidelines to assess the stress of patients' relatives and helpthem find proper ways to cope with stress. In addition, the results should be used todevelop transferring systems from the ICU to a general ward effectively.
